t seems very scary to be writing my introduction for a 2012 issue. Currently it is the middle of December as I am writing this, and I have started to panic slightly that time is running out to do all of my Christmas shopping. These few weeks are always very busy, but they are also the most rewarding of the year. I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and a wonderful start to the new year.

January is often a cold and quiet month, after the build-up to Christmas, we all return to work with lighter purses and usually resolutions to lose those extra few

pounds gained over the festive period. However we always have something nice to look forward to this month, and that is our very own Whittlesey Straw Bear Festival. You may remember that we placed an article in the December issue about this year's festival, but don't worry if you can't remember what is happening when and where, because we've put in a little reminder on page 39.

With the cold weather now really starting to come, we are delighted this month to introduce Branch Bros, who are offering a special winter loft insultation promotion. So if you feel that your house could be better prepared for winter, and want to save money on your heating bills, then why not have a look. For more details turn to page 24.

You will remember a few issues back that we featured a competition to find the best Fenland photographer. Atelier East had a great response, and to find out who won, turn to pages 8 and 9.

I hope you have a lovely January, stay warm and I will hopefully see a few of you at the Straw Bear Festival. Fingers crossed we get some sunshine (and no snow please).

How to donate

Anglian Water have sent a letter to every single one of the affected households to inform us that we will receive £20 compensation for the disruption and our inconvenience. BUT…..was it really so much of an inconvenience to most of us?

In many African countries children as young as 5 or 6 years have to make a daily trek of 5 miles or more to fetch water from the closest source, often muddy and contaminated, carrying on their heads a jerry can containing over 20 litres.

Wouldn’t it be a great idea if lots of Whittlesey families decided that instead of keeping the £20 compensation, it could be put to better use by donating it to TWAM who supply the tank moulds and expertise to enable rainwater harvesting guttering to be fitted and concrete water storage tanks to be constructed.In those places where this has already been

achieved, no longer do the children have to make those arduous treks each morning before their school day begins!

Your generosity will make a life changing difference to others!!

Cheque received in memory of Susan DickinsonAfter losing her mum, Susan Dickinson, to cancer in August this year, Sarah ensured that something positive could come from it. Susan had always been proud of her daughter’s work in the ambulance service, and it was her dying wish for the funeral to have donations to the East Anglian Air Ambulance, instead of flowers. In total they raised eight hundred pounds, which was recenetly presented with a further fifty pounds which was donated to St Johns Ambulance in whittlesey for a portable generator they desperately needed.

Sarah commented: “On behalf of my mum I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone who donated towards the appeal.”

of the year awardsThe awards evening for Fenland Photographer of the year was a great success

on Friday 2nd December. Octavia View (Wisbech) was full of people getting the first glimpse at the best pictures from around Fenland.

Atelier East created the competition to help Fenland District Council get some inspiring pictures of Fenland for their tourism guide and help bring more interest to Fenland. Atelier East also strives to support the local community and artists to help share their work and enthusiasm.

Artistic Director from Atelier East, Karen Harvey, presented the awards with Councillor Seaton. They announced the winner of the prestigious title, Fenland Photographer of the Year 2012 as Tim Daniels who will have his winning photograph included in “Welcome to Cambridgeshire Fens, Visitor and Accommodation Guide.”

Karen said, “It was great to bring so many creative people together in such a beautiful and unique venue as Octavia View, and to share a special evening of celebration and some fantastic photographic art. We hope to support many more photographers and Fenland District

Council again next year.”

One of the guests, Janis Griffiths said, “It was a great opportunity to appreciate some beautiful photography of the fens. The winning entry was truly outstanding and it is wonderful that Atelier East is supporting and encouraging young talent like Tim Daniels who I'm sure is on his way to a successful career as a first class photographer.”

The exhibition will be running for a full two months and finish on the 2nd February. It will be available to view and purchase Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm. There are also pictures to see in Octavia View’s café so take an afternoon trip to see this lovely exhibition.

Rar Rar's Sandwich & Snack BarIt’s always nice to see a new business in Whittlesey, and this month we spoke to Tracey at Rar Rar’s Sandwich and Snack Bar, to find out a little more.

Tracey worked at Orton Hall Hotel many years ago as a function and restaurant supervisor. This is where she found a liking for catering. Since then she had always wanted to set up her own business in the catering industry. Now with her children grown up and independant themselves, it was finally the right time for Tracey. She explains: “I spent a long time earlier this year looking for a way to pursue this dream and after considering a few locations, I came across an empty plot down Lovells Court that caught my eye. I decided that the shop was to become a sandwich and snack bar and started about making my dream a reality. The plot at first wasn’t at all ideal for a catering business but myself along with family and friends worked tirelessly to turn it into what it is now. I recieved the keys on 9th Sept 2011 and with no professional assistance we were able to open just under a month later on 8th Oct 2011.I’m extremely proud of how the shop has turned out and have already had positive feedback from many customers. I look forward to being part of the community here in Whittlesey for many years to come and hope to eventually branch out into other areas of catering, including catering for events and corporate clients and making bespoke cakes to order. And if things go well who knows, I may be able to branch out to further locations.”

Christmas Social Event at the Railway Inn

ur second social event to celebrate what has been a very successful year for Whittlesea Street Pride took place at the Railway Inn on the 7th December; this was followed by a cryptic quiz by Chairman Roy Gerstner.Whittlesea Street Pride ‘Volunteers’ have removed over 6,000 Kgs of Litter, Rubbish and Fly-tipped materials throughout 2011, they have also added two gateway projects, ‘The Plough Garden’ at March Road Coates and another flower boat – Whittlesey Wayfarer at Guildenburgh Crescent. Over 1,000 hours of volunteer time has been given to our projects.The Group now have 6 Gateway projects, 3 Adopted Gardens and 2 Lay-bys which are fully maintained and are sponsored by local businesses. Chairman Roy Gerstner ‘I would like to thank all our group for the very hard work they have done throughout the year, to help Whittlesey and its villages to be a safer, cleaner place to live, work and play’.We are well advanced with at least two if not three projects for 2012, January and February are quieter times of the year for us and we will concentrate on our Litter picking activities.

Happy New Year Everyone!Here we are in 2012 except I’m writing this in the second week of December and Christmas hasn’t yet happened. We have just said goodbye to our family and know they have arrived home safely in America. We celebrated Thanksgiving with them here in Whittlesey and my deputy, Martin Curtis, stood in for me and attended the Thanksgiving celebrations with our American friends at Alconbury on 23 November.

Manor Dolphin swimmersSince I wrote my last article I have been keeping up with my duties as Mayor and all the council committees and also participating and enjoying events leading up to Christmas. On the evening of Friday 25 November I presented the gala awards to the Manor Dolphin swimmers; these youngsters are really dedicated to their sport and I congratulate them all on their achievements.

Whittlesea Community Car SchemeThe Whittlesea Community Car Scheme (WCCS) held a pre-Christmas Coffee Morning for its passengers on Monday 5 December. I popped along for a coffee and a chat with its passengers and volunteer drivers. The passengers are greatly appreciative of the scheme and here is another organisation that is looking for volunteers. The scheme contact number is 07810 427483, so if you would like to find out more about it give them a call.

Christingle ServiceI attended the Alderman Jacobs Key Stage 1 Christingle Service with our granddaughter, Francesca, on the afternoon of Tuesday 6 December and would like to thank Mrs Sergeant and the children for making us so welcome.

High Sheriffs AwardsThe High Sheriffs Awards were presented at a ceremony at the East of England Showground on 7 December and I was delighted to see that Commotion Youth Club, WhitCo.Nect and Chilax Youth Club all from the Whittlesey area were recipients of awards. Nikki Cornwell of Chilax Youth Club also received a personal certificate of

recognition. Well done to you all.

Christmas ExtravaganzaFriday 9 December saw the Christmas Extravaganza on the Market Square and what a wonderful event once again. Thanks to all the organisers and those who took part to make it another successful evening. This of course coincided with the Christmas Tree Festival at St Mary’s Church; yet another fantastic weekend which was concluded with the Carol Service tonight (Sunday 11 December). We certainly know how to put on events in Whittlesey, but they don’t just happen. The organisers and volunteers that help at these events deserve a very big Thankyou.

Christmas LightsI would also like to place on record the Town Council’s thanks on behalf of all the residents of Whittlesey to everyone that helps put up the Christmas Lights and once again make the Town look splendid for the Festive Season.

Petition to M&CoI have been asked to mention that following a petition to M&Co about the possibility of opening a shop in Whittlesey a response has been received from its Chief Executive advising that the company cannot consider this at the current time as they did not wish to take trade away from its shop in March. Sorry – we did try. I have however noticed that work is going on at a shop in Broad Street, which used to be the locksmiths shop.

Queens Diamond Jubilee2012 will see the Queens Diamond Jubilee and here in Whittlesey we will be celebrating it on Monday 4 June. Put that date in your diaries. We will shortly be advertising what will be happening.

Focus on BusinessRichard Marson Cycle Shop

The Richard Marson Cycle Shop on Market Street has been a landmark in Whittlesey for many years. The building has housed a cycle shop for over 100 years! Earlier this year, Richard and Rosemary Marson decided to retire and handed over the business to Pippa & Andrew Roddham. We thought we’d pop over to see how they were getting on.

One final question for each of you. What sort of bicycle do you ride and which one would you like?Andrew: I ride a roadbike most days. I’ve had it many years and don’t think

When did you take the shop over?Pippa: We took over last May although I’ve been working in the shop since January last year. Richard and Rosemary stayed with us for a couple of months and then retired in July.

QA& So what made you decide to take

on a bicycle shop?Pippa: It was the right time in our lives. Our children are now all at school and I was looking for something else to do. Andrew’s a keen cyclist and I’ve run a shop before so it all seemed to fit together.

QA& Who will we meet when we come

into the shop?Pippa: There’s me of course, I’m the main sales person and shop manager and I also undertake some of the repairs. We have a shop assistant Sarah and our

what’s popular at the moment?PIppa: We sell all sorts from kids bikes to some really slick roadbikes for triathalons. Most popular are probably the hybrids, which are a commuter bike, city bikes and mountain bikes.

QA& What sort of repairs can you

undertake?Andy: We do most repairs. Tyre and tube fitting, brake and gear servicing and wheel straightening are probably the most popular.

QA& So what would a service cost

me?Andy: A full service is £25+VAT plus the cost of any parts needed.

QA& Do you plan to keep the name

Richard Marson Cycles?Pippa: Yes, for the moment although we plan to change the name to Whittlesey Cycles sometime later this year.

QA& Are there any other changes

you plan to make?Pippa: We’re not rushing into making any major changes. Although we are bringing some fresh ideas into the shop.

I could bear to part with it. I have an old mountain bike I get out in the winter when it’s slippery. I’d really like one of the Giant Defy roadbikes for my next ride. Pippa: With the shop and kids I don’t get to ride much but when I do get the chance I have a hybrid at home. I’d like to have a road bike with straight bars for training purposes rather than racing.Andy: I have a Giant N7 and am very happy with it. I’ve no plans to change it.Sarah: I ride an electric bike and use it to commute from Peterborough where I live. I’d like one of the Powacycle Windsor electric bikes. They have a lithium battery and are so much lighter than the one I use at the moment.

Church

In showing our church family the difference between ‘true statements’ and ‘the truth’ I explained how easy it would be to turn up at church in a top of the range Rolls Royce only to go back to my little run-around a few months later. I could make the ‘true’ statement that ‘I no longer have my lovely Roll Royce’ but the ‘truth’ would be - it’s been repossessed. True statements can often mask unpalatable issues, such as my stupidity in buying something I could not afford. How adept governments are at burying bad news underneath some headline grabbing ‘good news, or increased benefit’ safe in the knowledge that most people will never notice. That is until, as our previous government along with many other nations discovered, ‘the real truth’ of wrong decisions have to be faced.

For many people 2012 could bring horrendous hurdles to overcome, businesses and councils must wrestle with the difficult decisions of what services to axe or people to dismiss as they seek to balance their books.

I’m not a ‘doom and gloom’ person and neither do I foolishly ‘bury my head in the proverbial sand’ hoping that the problem will disappear if I ignore it long enough. During a particularly difficult time I discovered how wise and relevant the Bible is to life when I came across this incredible verse “you will know (face up to, get really acquainted with) the truth and this will set you free”

Plane Crash am indebted to Ray Brooks for his feedback in expanding on the history of the C141 Starlifter, one of which crashed in Thorney on 28th August 1976.

There were evidently two hundred and eighty four of this type of aircraft manufactured and only eight of them came to grief. Apart from the Thorney crash, three crashed in America, one in Spain, Bolivia and Greenland and one collided with a fighter over Viet-Nam All these crashes occurred in a ten year period from 1966 to 1976.

What is really bizarre, and ties up with local history, is that on the 28th August 1976 a sister Starlifter C-141A tail number 67008 to the one that crashed at Thorney, also took off from McGuire Air Base bound for Greenland, but it too never landed at it’s destination. As it was coming into land at Sondrestrom Air Base it seemed to speed up as if trying to gain height

but that manoeuvre did not succeed. The Aircraft stalled and then crashed to the ground between the hanger and the Airport Hotel, just a few feet to the right of the runway and burst into flames. All twenty three personnel on board died. About two hours after the crash a Sikorski s-61 helicopter from Greenland Air arrived from Holstenborg with doctors and nurses, but of course they were far too late to be of any help. Photographs of the helicopter arriving does not seem to show any fire fighting equipment attending the fire and begs the question, were there no emergency services at Sondrestrom Air Base?

What a coincidence though that two Starlifter aeroplanes taking off on the same day, from the same base in America, should crash within a few hours of each other when so few of their number came to grief.

Another question that has been asked is where is the memorial to those killed in the Thorney crash (the photograph was in my previous article) to be found. The answer is by travelling towards Thorney from Whittlesey on the B1040 and turning right at Stone Bridge Corner, it is about 3½-4 miles along the Thorney Dyke Road. Thereon the right hand side of the road is the Memorial which is approached by a concrete bridge over the dyke. The American flag, stars and stripes now rather faded and weatherworn flies there still.

Policing your areaby An�� H��id�� Well before I start with the first report of the New Year I would like to wish everyone happy new year and welcome to 2012. I hope you all had an enjoyable and safe end to 2011. Over the Christmas period Cambridgeshire Constabulary

was running its annual drink drive campaign which is aimed to make the roads a safer place for everyone. I am pleased to say that one of the positive results was achieved here in Whittlesey. Following a report of a road traffic collision that had occurred in the town officers were quickly dispatched to the scene. On arrival officers carried out the relevant checks which included both drivers providing a sample of breath. As a result of these roadside breath tests one of the driver’s blew over the legal limit and was subsequently arrested for drink driving. Thankfully no persons were seriously injured as a result of the collision. While I am on the subject of vehicle related incidents I am pleased to say that there has been another successful result within Whittlesey. Traffic officers carrying out routine patrol saw a vehicle parked up just outside of Whittlesey. When officers approached, they could smell a strong smell of diesel coming from the vehicle. After conducting the relevant searches, 14 drums of diesel were found in the rear of the vehicle. With the support of a dog unit two males were located nearby and were arrested on suspicion of diesel theft. Your local neighbourhood policing has already seen a positive result to start the New Year off by cracking down on another drugs house within

in the town. After several intelligence reports had come through that drugs were being dealt from a local property officers acted quickly on the information. As a result of this intelligence it proved a positive as 16 cannabis plants were seized from the property. The male received a caution for production.Your local neighbourhood policing team has welcomed a new officer to the team. Police Community Support Officer 7122 DAVID ARNOLD joins the team after having completed his training at police headquarters and looks forward to meeting local residents and providing his skills and capabilities to assist in making Whittlesey a safer place. The Whittlesey neighbourhood policing team will be holding several cycle coding events at the local schools throughout January so if your children, or if you know anybody with young children who would like to have their cycles post coded then please send your children with their bikes to their school on the following dates:• Wednesday 11th January 2012 – New Road Primary• Thursday 12th January 2012 – AJS • Friday 13th January 2012 – Park Lane• Wednesday 25th January 2012 – Coates primary

CHILDREN IN NEED An incrediable £874 was raised for Children in Need from two events on 19th and 20th of November.A five mile walk in Ferry Meadows was generously sponsored and a Songs of Praise service in Holy Trinity Church,Coates was well attended.Seven people walked (six of them were senior citizens) and emerged from thick fog into bright sunshine - most enjoyable.THANK YOU to all who helped provide this worthwhile total.

Round Table PartyI would like to thank Paul Brown (Chairman of the Whittlesey Round Table) and his team for all the hard work they put into organising the fantastic Senior Citizens Christmas party at the Ivy Leaf Club on Tuesday 29th November 2011. New Year – A Fresh Plan

We discovered that sometimes it is helpful to take advice from someone with a different skill set to your own. This is the basis of Independent Financial Advice. The first principle is to establish an emergency

fund that acts as a financial buffer in case of unexpected expenditure. Next is to make sure you are protected in case things go wrong –

and make sure you are not paying too much for it. Any liabilities such as loans, mortgage, credit cards are reviewed – and on to savings, pensions, investments and tax planning – have you made a Will?.

Having started the process it is important to

continue monitoring it. Mindful of the Olympics this year, you would not expect an athlete to do the first week of a training schedule – then hope for the best in competition!

Perfect posture is where there is minimum stress placed on the body’s joints and muscles (i.e. the body is in harmony). When at work we adopt postures to suit our work, not our body. This can lead to tension in the muscles, stiffness in the joints and irritation of the nerves within the neck, back and shoulders. Osteopathy can help reduce muscle tension, stiffness in the joints and also provide advice on ways to improve your posture.

A couple of big carp have been taken from a very clear Glassmore Bank and with some wonderful pleasure fishing catches being taken along Whittlesey Dyke and Ashline Sluice there has been no shortage of fish. Officials at the Whittlesey club have been a little disappointed with the rather low attendance at their junior matches, perhaps next year a little more promotion before the event will see a few more young anglers on the bank, bear it in mind, there is always plenty of expert help on hand and the youngsters can pick up a lot of tips very quickly in a couple of sessions. This year’s aggregate trophy winner was Sam Boon with an overall aggregate weight of 7lb 8oz.

Our local still waters have been in full swing, Eldernell has been transformed by the new owners and is well worth a visit, Kingsland has seen lots of double figure carp taken and the Silver Fish Lake has also been in cracking form. Railway Lakes is another water that has seen a lot of local anglers enjoying a good days sport and a few new features

at Northey Bark has seen quite a few more anglers visiting the complex. As expected, Decoy lakes is the Mecca for match anglers from across the area right now there are very few local clubs that do not fish here regularly.

In the recent Decoy Lakes Festival huge weights were taken, Nigel Baxter broke the venue record with close to 300lb of carp but even that was not enough to stop John Whincup form winning the three day event.

The success of the recent British Pike Championship on our local drains and indeed the revival of fens with regard to pike fishing has seen a marked improvement in anglers coming to visit the area. That has to be good news for the Whittlesey Angling Club and indeed the area in general but unfortunately it has had a down side to it as well. Over the past few weeks would be poachers have been spotted on the Twenty Foot drain and other smaller waters around Whittlesey using small boats and nets with the intention of taking fish from our waters. The Chairman of Whittlesey AA was alerted to the problem some time ago and has been working with the local police and the Environment Agency to see what can be done in a joint effort to put an end to the illegal action, which if left to continue would undoubtedly decimate stocks and in turn ruin the fishing for years to come. The club are asking everyone to be vigilant, not just anglers either, the roads that criss cross our drains are often quite busy with people going about their daily work. If you do spot small boats with groups of men anywhere on the drains please call the Environment Agency hot line (0800 807060) and report what you have seen, a short call could well stop huge amounts of fish disappearing for ever from our waters. On a much brighter note sport in the area has been quite good considering we are into what is traditionally a difficult time for anglers. Many anglers have been out spinning and lure fishing for pike and zander on the Twenty Foot Drain, but the likes of Glassmoor bank and Cock Bank area also well worth a try. Whittlesey Dyke that runs at the back edge of the town is a noted winter venue for good roach catches and should provide sport right up until the end of the season. You do not have to fish that far out, a short pole fishing pinkies over a little groundbait should keep the fish coming all day. Finally a word of warning, especially for those

out on a cold and frosty morning. The steep banks along many of our waters can be very difficult to negotiate and a slip at the wrong time can see you dipping your toes into icy cold water, so please take care when out fishing and most of all do not try to break the ice to fish. It’s all too easy to get into real trouble and very difficult to get out of it.

A fashion show will be held on Wednesday 11th of January at the Whittlesey Conservative Club. All proceeds will go to the residents Comfort Fund at The Hermitage Care home in Whittlesey. Tickets are £5.00 each and a bar will be open for anyone who fancies a drink. A raffle will be held on the night. Circles of Yaxley will be hosting the show and doors open at 7.30 p.m. Circles is run by Sue Allbright who opened the shop over 22 years ago. She sells very good quality clothing and accessories at very reasonable prices and throughout January and at our show, she is offering a discount of 25% on all goods sold. • Tickets can be obtained from The Hermitage. During the afternoon, stories will be told in the Methodist/United Reformed Church in Queen Street by The Cambridge Storytellers who don’t just relate to children but adults as well – well worth a visit. In the Library on Market Street you can enjoy an hour with Pete Coe - a one man folk festival, in addition to poetry by Poets United from

Peterborough. All day at the Buttercross you will find the memorabilia stand with lots of new gifts available. Remember also, after the bear has finished, the following two dances are happening from 8pm until 11.30pm and tickets are still available from Rob and Ruth at The Box Office on 01733 204055. Firstly, at Sir Harry Smith Community College, Eastrea Road is a BARN DANCE with music by Hekerty featuring Pete Coe as caller. Tickets cost £9 each. Forty-six year old Swedish director Tomas Alfredson came to prominence three years ago when he directed the film adaptation of John Ajvide Lindqvist's novel 'Let The Right One In'. After its success, Alfredson became attached to an international adaptation of John le Carre's espionage-novel 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy'. Based on aspects of le Carre's (also known as David Cornwell) experiences during his time as a member of the British Intelligence service sectors MI5 and MI6 during the 1950s and 1960s, Alfredson creates a fine, absorbing picture which engrosses from beginning to end.

Control (John Hurt), the leader of an unknown sector of the British Intelligence service, is ousted along with his long-standing companion George Smiley (Gary Oldman) due to a botched operation in Budapest, Hungary which saw the officer Jim Prideaux (Mark Strong) murdered in public. Control was under the impression that there was a mole among the top ranking members of the service, referred to as the Circus by the other top ranking members due to its location in Cambridge Circus, London, and Smiley is drawn out of retirement to pinpoint the culprit after Control passes away. Alongside the young Intelligence officer Peter Guillam (Benedict Cumberbatch), Smiley has four primary candidates to focus his investigation upon; they are the last remaining members of the Circus, Bill Haydon (Colin Firth), Percy Alleline (Toby Jones), Roy Bland (Ciaran Hinds) and Toby Esterhase (David Dencik).

Since its premiere at the 68th Venice International Film Festival 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy' has been touted as an Oscar contender and it is easy to understand why, Tomas Alfredson has taken a solid source novel and utilized an established cast to create a wonderfully crafted film that does the original BBC televised series justice.
