Gilson College Mernda is running a community program for 1 to 5-year-olds called every Happy Hands Art Time

Monday from 1:00pm to 2:30pm. The Happy Hands program was introduced into the school as one of the ways Gilson College connects with the community on a level that meets the needs of a growing community with young families.

Each week at Happy Hands, there is a special theme and children enjoy creating two masterpieces centred around the theme. There will be sensory boxes, singing, a healthy afternoon tea and not to forget a creative mess! Part of the program also involves exploring and introducing a different colour each week where children bring along something from home to 'show and tell' which represents that colour.

It's bright, colourful, loud and fun – and that's the way we like it!

The afternoon session for Happy Hands at Gilson College is currently booked out with 24 children attending each week. A wait list has begun and should the demand arise, Gilson College will investigate operating another session. Each session is $7 which covers the cost of art supplies and snacks for the children each week.

We are in the last stretch of 2013 and it is competition time again...

Spring is the time for spring-cleaning. It is a time for getting rid of the stale winter air and welcoming the crisp, rejuvenating vibes of spring. It is a time for new life and fresh beginnings. So, this month, we are giving our readers a chance to become “spring-organised”. See page 15 for the details of how you can enter for a chance to win one of two book, personally signed by the author, that will get you on the road to organised tranquillity.

Next, we have a special “Dress-Up” competition for our Kids Corner readers this month. One lucky reader will win a $20 voucher from one of our wonderful advertisers to either buy or hire a costume for their very own Aussie-style Hallowe’en party. See the Kids Corner on page 25 for all the details.

In this issue, we have an article on foster care and a feature on child sponsorship. In the lead up to Christmas, I think it is important for us to look outside our sphere and reach out to kids in need. As one child aptly explained, when asked what adoption was, she said,“it means that you grew in your mummy’s heart instead of her tummy”. Let’s open our hearts and make a difference in the life of a child!
