4 Discovering Whittlesea | October 2014

ast month truly was the most wonderful month. To begin with, I spent a week at the beautiful Suffolk coast with my two favourite boys. There was ice-cream, sand, giggles and a daily intake of cakes. If you haven’t been to the Suffolk coast, I can thoroughly recommend. We stayed at Southwold, and whilst it wasn’t ideal for children, there was more than enough to keep a 16-month old happy. Having returned, refreshed and rejuvinated, we then had the Whittlesey Festival to look forward to - and wasn’t it a spectacular day. The weather was glorious, the organisers did a terrific job of bringing together so many interesting stalls and activities, and the community were in fine spirit. I walked around all day, taking in the sights and sounds of happy children and parents. We have a gallery and full report on the Festival on pages 40 and 41. Last month our magazine printed too early to include a report on the wonderful Wi-Tri event, which was held in August. So turn to page 10 to read our report - and see if you can see yourself in the pictures. How many of you would welcome a consultation into the Kings Dyke Crossing? Next month we will be printing lots of information about this, but you can find out a little more this month on page 66. This is certainly a very hot topic amongst commuters, so I urge you all to take note and give feedback. Don’t forget to keep sending in your events and local stories to my new email address: [email protected] I hope you all have a lovely month.

Front cover by Martin Peters

p.s. I should probably explain the photo above. Growing up, my family and I spent our holiday breaks at Southwold, and every year we were most excited about climbing on top of the old cannons they had on Gun Hill. So naturally, as soon as I had my son, I was desperate to take him to the same place. As you can see, Dylan was almost as excited as my husband was to see them!

Friends of Whittlesey LibraryThe Friends of the Library are holding their Annual General Meeting on October 7th, in the Library at 7pm. There will be a showing from the East Anglia Film Archive and a light supper will be served. This is a free event, open to all. Anyone wishing to join the committee may obtain nomination forms from the Library. The 'Friends' aim to raise funds to buy equipment for the library so that it can be used for events that will be available to the community. We have already have had a performances from a theatre group, a film ('Ping Pong') and talks on various subjects as well as quizzes with fish and chip suppers, cake sales, a Christmas Fair and entries into the Christmas Tree Festival at St. Mary's church. Please support your local Library.

Are you a budding photographer? The Friends of the Library are holding a photographic competition which is open to adults and children. The fee to enter is £2 per photo and entry is open until the end of October. The winners will have their enlarged photograph on permanent display in the Whittlesey Library. All details of the competition rules and entry forms are available from the Library. The winners will be announced at our Christmas Fair on November 29th. Photographs should be 'portrait' format in order to be displayed on the shelf ends.

Photograph CompetitionWe would like to thank the amazing Whittlesey folk who came along to Effie's Charity Barn Dance at the Marriott on Friday. We raised a fantastic £5000 for Effie and the BDFA. We are using the money to buy sensory equipment for Effie (which will really help when her sight is lost) and help the BDFA fund research into a cure for this horrific disease.

Thank you...

hittlesey Wi-Tri is a relatively new club to Whittlesey (comprising of 20 members), training for Triathlons all around the Country. Club members, Cameron, Kirk and John decided to not only compete but to also host their very own Triathlon Taster day in their local town to try to promote not only the fun side of the sport but also the benefits of training as part of a club. The day started off nice and sunny with an early start of 6 am. This early start enabled members and volunteers to get the event ready. This involved marking out the cycle and run course and getting the pool ready. Helpers also organised the bike park area, first aid, refreshments and registration all the important roles that helped to make this event the success it was. The first event started at 9.30 which was for the children, there were over 140 entrants on the day, aging from 8 to 66, travelling from all over even as far as Lancashire, with one young lady Tiya Sherliker aged 9 (no.38 in photos), raised over £1400 from this event alone for her charity “Soldiers off the Streets”, this was very emotional and just goes to show how such an event can help in so many other ways. They also had a Granddad and Grandson competing, which just goes to show this is an event for all ages, and abilities. After the children races, it then went onto the juniors followed by the seniors,

WI-Tri a success

Written by Debbie peters Images by freeanglephotography

It just goes to show with the right support, community Spirit and good team work that an event like this can be as successful as any other, and it was great to be there to support and take photos to show what a great success the day was.

Every part of the day was meticulously organised, from the start, down to support for swimmers getting to their bikes to the finish getting their race chips off and times printed for each competitor.

|Community newsLocal resident opens brand new salon

Holly Gleeson, who was born in Whittlesey and attended both AJS and SHSCC, has just completed her first month as a business owner. Holly, who from the age of three knew that she wanted to be a hairdresser, opened HairBella, based on South Street, Stanground (above a successful Barber’s Shop) on the 30th of August, and judging from the customer feedback on Facebook, it’s clear to see that HairBella is going to be a huge success:“Huge thank you to Holly at HairBella for doing my hair again! You’re a superstar and the new salon is beautiful!” As well as offering first class cut and colours, Holly also has a facial, waxing, eyelash and eyebrow tinting service. There is also a nail technician position open, meaning that the salon will soon offer everything you could possibly want to be pampered and pruned. Having been in the hairdressing industry for over 13 years, and yet only 29, Holly has a lot to be proud of. The mother of two offered her advice to others looking to start their own business: “Although it is scary, I would encourage anyone to take the plunge, if you work hard and have a good support network you can achieve your dreams.” For the month of October you can receive £5 off any colour and finish service when booking an appointment at HairBella.

For more information or to book an appointment, please call Holly on 07737 459810 or ‘like’ HairBella on Facebook for daily offers.

14 Discovering Whittlesea | October 2014

Cllr Dave Mason

I am writing this article in the wake of a wonderful Whittlesey Festival which I am sure those that attended fully enjoyed and on behalf of the town of Whittlesey may I congratulate and thank the organisers for such superb entertainment throughout the day. Also, the many exhibitors and stall holders, the emergency services who were on hand all day to ensure our comfort and safety and of course to all who turned out. The organisers even ensured that the weather played its part this year. A special mention of the absolutely fabulous display of classic cars which I am sure brought back memories for many of happy days gone by along with the flypast of Spitfires. Thanks also to the entertainers in many forms from bands and singers to display teams, Pig Dyke Molly and the excellent pipe bands and display teams. If I have forgotten anybody please forgive me as you all played your part in contributing towards a memorable day and we look forward eagerly to the 2015 Festival. On 10 October I shall be attending the annual Fenland Business Awards in March. For the past three years Whittlesey has won the Pride of Fenland award which previously was decided by public vote. This year the rules have been drastically changed and the award will be given after the consideration of a panel of judges to the town that has displayed the greatest initiative in promoting business within the town and submissions have been sought on behalf of the Fenland towns by publicity throughout the summer in the Cambs Times newspaper. Some weeks ago I submitted a paper to the panel of judges on behalf of Whittlesey in which I pointed out that as a town we have a number of disadvantages when trying to retain business within the town. For example, we do not have a universally recognised Chamber of Commerce, we do not have well known chain stores such as large supermarkets (at present), coffee shops, ladies fashions shops - think of March or Wisbech with their extensive choice of “Big Four” supermarkets, M & Co. Ladies Fashion Stores, Greggs Bakery Shops, Costa Coffee Houses etc. etc. However what we do have is a town with a heart beating fast from the efforts of the local community, a hard working Business Forum, a dedicated band of volunteers who strive to provide this town with not one but four major Festivals throughout the year which not only

encourages local people to circulate their money amongst local traders but attracts visitors from far and wide. I refer of course to The Straw Bear Festival, Circuit of the Fens Cycling Festival, Whittlesey Festival and the Christmas Extravaganza. All this is underpinned by other voluntary organisations, the Whittlesey Lions, Rotary Club, Street Pride, Whittlesey in Bloom, Whittlesey Country Park, Whittlesey Christmas Lights Committee to name but a few. When thinking of voluntary organisations please do not forget our Whittlesey Town Council. It is a common misconception that our council is made up of paid members. The reality is that your local councillors give up many hours each and every week without payment to promote Whittlesey and safeguard its well being. As Mayor I receive a small annual allowance to enable me to represent your town at many civic functions in the region throughout the year which by no means covers my personal outlay for expenses. Whatever the outcome of this year’s Pride of Fenland I can honestly say that I am proud to be your Mayor and fully recognise the immense contributions made by so many to maintain our status as “Jewel of the Fens” for which I thank you all. Whilst extending plaudits and thanks I would like to end by congratulating our Whittlesey in Bloom team for achieving several silver gilt awards at the recent Anglia in Bloom presentations held this year in Gorleston, Norfolk and coming away with the Most Consistently Improved Award for the whole of East Anglia. The awards were achieved by exceptional work throughout the year by a relatively small number of volunteers who worked so hard to enhance the beauty of our town with their horticultural skills. I am sure Cllr. Mrs Kay Mayor would love to hear from anyone who feels that they can make a contribution towards the efforts of this group during the coming year.

Till next time……..

SIMON’S RECIPE OF

THE MONTH

Simon Norris,J Jones Butchers“

”Simons Slow Cooked Lamb Stew

Ingredients:1 tsbp Vegetable oil

500g Lamb Neck Fillet, (Diced)4-6 Shallots

2-4 turnips, peeled and halved500g Small new potatoes

200g chopped carrots2 leeks, trimmed and cut thickly

600g chicken stockhandful of peas

Instructions:1. Preheat the slow-cook pot or set the oven to 150°C/302°F/Gas Mark 2. Heat the oil in a

large pan or flameproof casserole, then brown the meat over a high heat for a few minutes on each side. Add the shallots, turnips, potatoes,

carrots and leeks. 2. Pour the stock over, cover and cook on high in the pot for 6-8 hours or in a casserole in the oven

for 2¾ hours. 3. Stir in some thickening granules until dissolved

and the sauce is thickened. Add the peas, season with salt and pepper and leave for 10

minutes to heat through. Stir in a few mint leaves just before serving.

As the nights are now drawing in and we head into October the thought of stews and casseroles

spring to mind. Lamb is at its best this time of the year, and I think there is nothing better than throwing it all in a slow cooker and returning

home to an amazing smell.

WHITTLESEY WIDuring August some of the members went to visit St Mary’s Church, Westry March. In 2010 the church suffered a devasting fire but now it is open again after being totally renovated and the result is truly inspiring and well worth a visit. A most memorable evening. At September’s meeting Charlie Kitchen from the RSPB gave a very interesting talk and slide show about the work this organization does on the Whittlesey Wash and surrounding area to enable some rare and endangered species of birds to nest and over winter. The next meeting is on Tuesday 7th October at 7:30 pm at St Andrew’s Church Hall, when Susan Stevens will give a talk, the topic will be homemade chocolate. New members are most welcome, call Ginny on 01733 205148.

Proudly in association with Wright's of Whittlesey

he ongoing saga of the acoustics raised its head again in 1959 and the Trustees decided to do something about it. Specialists inspected the meeting room and recommended installing a suspended sound absorbing ceiling with similar panels to the side and end walls. The Trustees agreed to this course of action. The coal boiler was nearing the end of its life and carrying coals to the open fires provided inadequate heating. Taking into account the reduced ceiling height, it was decided to install a gas fired warm air unit with ventilated ductwork along one side of the meeting room with outlets to the magistrates restoring room and landing. All this upheaval meant that the meeting room had to be redecorated which was entrusted to Mr. B. J. Clark. The question now arose over the vacant caretakers cottage. Mr. James Oldfield had died in 1963 and his wife a few months later, they having lived there since 1909. The cottage was not modernised during this time and it would cost too much to bring it up to the accepted standard of accommodation. It was the opinion of the Trustees, that with replacing the coal fired boiler with gas and doing away with the coal fires, a resident caretaker was not necessary. Mrs E. Scotney was therefore employed as a non-resident caretaker and cleaner. At this time a supermarket “Housewives Choice” was opening opposite and it was agreed with the owner to rent him the cottage for storage. This occupation ceased in 1965 when the shop ceased trading and remained vacant for ten years until the Whittlesea Society approached the Trustees with a view to using it as a museum. The Trustees welcomed this suggestion with open arms and contributed to the cost of the alterations needed. The work went ahead and the Museum opened in 1976. The lighting in the meeting room only comprised six 60 watt bulbs in overhead fittings and these were replaced by four twin 8 foot long fluorescent tubes which must have turned night into day! The cold winter of 1979 took its toll on the water pipes in the toilets and with no permanent caretaker, it was some time before the leaks were discovered and considerable damage was caused to the ceilings and walls. The erection of a new courthouse in Peterborough meant that the Magistrates had vacated the premises leaving them unused. However, the recently formed Parish Council expressed an interest in using one of the ground floor rooms as an office and the Museum was looking to expand into the other room, so at a stroke the ground room was now being utilised. The Parish Council also used the

TThe Town Hall (part four)

main first floor room for their meetings. In 1990 the various charities amalgamated under the name of The Whittlesey Charity and to mark the occasion the Trustees decided to install a projecting clock on the outside of the Town Hall and as a fitting tribute to Mr. F. H. Newman who had completed 50 years as a Trustee. Hayward Horological of Ipswich were entrusted with the installation. It was felt that by the late 1990s the building, particularly the meeting room, was showing its age. The heating system, electric wiring, suspended ceiling all required renewing and the Trustees decided to grasp the nettle and, as their millennium project, return the building to its 1857 condition embracing modern day criteria. To achieve this, the late Robert Powell, an architectural surveyor with experience of listed buildings who had recently moved into the Town, was invited to prepare a feasibility study for the Trustees to consider. This was done and the project went ahead. The building had to be cleared of furniture, pictures, records and museum displays to other locations. As part of the work, the charts and curved tables were renovated and re-polished and John Peed’s portrait was restored. Hartwood Builders carried out the main building work, the floor was carpeted and drapes and curtains hung to the front windows. The suspended ceiling was not replaced, thereby exposing the magnificent beamed roof. Further legislation meant alterations were required in 2006 to comply with the Disabled Discrimination Act resulting in a toilet being provided for the disabled and a lift installed to the first floor. No photograph this month as the building is self evident in its prominent position in Market Street. It is now an asset of which the Town can be proud.

No Christian is solitary. Through baptism we become members one of another in Christ, members of a company of saints whose mutual belonging transcends death:

One family, we dwell in him,one Church, above, beneath;

though now divided by the stream, the narrow stream of death. (Charles Wesley)

All Saints’ Day and the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed on All Souls’ Day both celebrate this mutual belonging. All Saints’ Day celebrates men and women in whose lives the Church as a whole has seen the grace of God powerfully at work. It is an opportunity to give thanks for that grace, and for the wonderful ends to which it shapes a human life; it is a time to be encouraged by the example of the saints and to recall that sanctity may grow in the ordinary circumstances, as well as the extraordinary crises, of human living. The Commemoration of the Faithful Departed celebrates the saints in a more local and intimate key. It allows us to remember with thanksgiving before God those whom we have known more directly: those who gave us life, or who nurtured

us in faith. Redemption is a work of God’s grace; it is God who redeems us in Christ and there is nothing to be done beyond what Christ has done. But we still wait for the final consummation of God’s new creation in Christ; those who are Christ’s, whether or not they have passed through death, are joined in prayer that God’s kingdom will be revealed finally and in all its fullness. This year in our parish churches we will be celebrating these two feasts on Sunday, 2nd November. In the morning we will celebrate All Saints with Holy Communion, 9.30 a.m. in St Andrew’s and in Holy Trinity and 11.00 a.m. in St Mary’s and in St Thomas’. In the afternoon we will remember All Souls during A Service to Remember Our Loved Ones, Our Annual Service for the Bereaved, at 3.00 p.m. in St Andrew’s church. All are welcome to join us at our services either in the morning and or in the afternoon.

The Feast Days of All Saints (November 1st) and All Souls (November 2nd)

Anglers have been predator fishing throughout the year but it’s the month of October that traditionally sees the main start to the piking season. Some good fish have already been taken from waters close to Whittlesey, but as the nights draw in and there is a distinct chill in the air the pike seem to come onto the feed, particularly the bigger specimens.

Most anglers after pike and zander these days fish dead baits on either a legered rig with a fixed weight or if conditions allow a float rig set up. I much prefer the latter on a cold winter’s morning watching a float appeals to me much more than waiting for an alarm to go off. Having said that my favourite approach is lure fishing and with such a vast array of patterns to choose from these days anglers, are spoilt for choice. Jointed types work well for me and the old fashioned Ondex spinners often come out when the going gets tough. We have a huge amount of waters to fish right on our doorstep, the Twenty Foot Drain is a renowned predator hotspot and Cock Bank is another water that

regularly gets fished through out the winter months. A particular favourite of mine is Glassmore Bank, the fish may be a little hard to tempt at times but there are some beautiful fish in this drain running well into double figures. October is also the month that will see winter leagues get under way and also the time anglers enjoy some cracking sport fishing bread punch. Don’t miss out on the action, winter may be just around the corner but the small drains are often at their best. Ashline sluice, both up and down of the locks are noted hot spots for bread punch angling, catches into double figures are not uncommon and only five minutes from the centre of Whittlesey. If you do have a good catch of fish or perhaps your first pike or indeed a personal best please drop me a line or better still send me a photo. Everyone loves to see a smiling face holding the catch of a lifetime. Tight Lines.

Our other major event was the replacing of our ‘Flower Boat’ ‘Spirit of Whittlesey’ at Ramsey Road – Street Pride Member Eddy Bloy spent many hours on refurbishing a donated boat by Mr Richard Easterbrook and sponsored by Briggate Service Garage.

LADYSMITH W.I.At the September meeting members and guests had the opportunity to try various Native American flutes and didgeridoo brought along by Terry Schon as part of his Sound Therapy. The music from his demonstrations of these instruments was mesmerising whilst ours, you could say, needed a bit more work but all agreed it was a wonderful experience. The next meeting is on Tuesday 14th October

at 7.30pm in St Andrew's Hall when Liz Wright will be giving us an insight into the work of a Donkey Sanctuary. Everyone seems to have a soft spot for the donkey so this will be a lovely evening. Some members have already made their own knitted toy donkeys to bring along and the competition is a Donkey picture.New members are welcome and if you join in October the membership fee will also include the whole of 2015 so a great time to join us.

I was asked this question recently and it prompted some serious thinking. There are no doubts in my mind that the Christian message is powerfully relevant today. It not only shows us how we can make the most of the life we have now, it also very clearly predicts major events that will affect the world in our day. I’m thinking in particular of just two relevant to life sections found in the Bible. It is true that some of the terminology in the King James Version of the Bible needs to be brought up-to-date without altering its original meaning. Verses such as “where there is no vision people perish” could be made more understandable and relevant by saying “without a clear sense of direction you will run around like a headless chicken”. Despite huge sums of money being thrown at helping people make something of their life, many still find that life for them holds no meaning because they have not established any clear and personal sense of direction. Closely connected to this is a prediction very appropriate to where the world finds itself today - “in the last days there will be wars and rumours of wars with nations and people fighting each other, and distress of nations with perplexity” - this could be more readily understood if it read – “In the closing days of time there will be national/

world wars, along with ethnic and tribal conflicts. In addition to this the world will find itself facing challenging situations for which it is difficult to find workable and lasting solutions”. It’s almost as though this section could have come straight from one of today’s news bulletins. Unfortunately space does not permit me to develop this further, but in answering this editorials question, yes, the real message of Christianity is powerfully relevant to life today. If you’re struggling to find any real and lasting sense of meaning to your life, then why not give me a call, or better still, come along to some of our meetings any Sunday morning at 10.45; where you will find a really warm welcome and great family atmosphere waiting for you.

Is There A Place For The Christian Message Today?

|Policing your area by Paul Harris, Whittlesey Geographic SergeantThe demands of summer have meant that for us it’s been a very busy period for both Whittlesey and Fenland district as a whole. ASB has been the main continuing issue with three streets being highlighted as having specific issues that really are affecting the quality of life of residents within Whittlesey. We have engaged with residents in these streets and surrounding streets through events and house knocks to insure we are not only getting the full facts but highlighting concerns and safeguarding people as best we can. We are continuing to work with partner agencies to seek long term solutions. A closure warning notice has been issued against one of these properties. ASB was reported to us at the Sycamore Rd garages. These unused garages were forced open gathering rubbish from fly tipping and became a haunt for drink and drugs. We have worked with Partners and managed to get graffiti removed and the rubbish cleared which was a good turnaround and good news story for working together. I have

spoken to one resident who has owned a garage there since they were nineteen and they were most happy with the improvements made. Crime reported has led to a number of suspects being identified and arrested and dealt with. These being for Assaults, ABH, Malicious Wounding, criminal damage, assault on police, theft, bilking of fuel, and cultivation of cannabis to name a few. The community showed great concern over a sexual assault that took place. The community and police worked together quickly, a suspect was identified and swiftly arrested. The investigation is still ongoing. As a team we will be working on a package to deliver to schools to help keep young person’s safe. We continue to work on the communities concern over speeding through the town. We have carried out some speed watch patrols and dealt with some drivers on this very issue. As a result one case is being put together over dangerous driving.

Premier Pizza celebrates 25 years 25 years ago, an 18-year-old Paul Reade decided to open a business. Having worked in various pizza delivery outlets, he decided to go it alone and open his own. In 1990 he opened Premier Pizza in Wisbech. After eight successful years, he bought a local business in Whittlesey and Premier Pizza moved home. Now, having taken a less active role in the last four years, Paul is back running the business he started as a teenager, but this time with the help of his wife Joanna. So what can you expect from the pizzeria? “We’re producing healthier but still tasty pizzas,” explained Paul, “and have replaced the greasy chips with popular curly fries. We also have daily specials and a great discount of collections.” Open every day from 5pm, and with late nights on a Friday and Saturday, Premier Pizza is a great option for the whole family. The team use 100% fresh dough, offer dips and their pizza can rival the best chains. Their newly launched website, credit/debit card facility, and faster delivery times, make this the best convenient and fast food around. Visit www.premierpizzawhittlesey.co.uk for

special offers and daily specials, such as their fantastic Tuesday offer of two pizzas for £10! So why not celebrate 25 years and order a pizza tonight!

• Premier Pizza can be found at 36 Causeway, Whittlesey PE7 1AJ. Visit www.premierpizzawhittlesey.co.uk for special offers or call 01733 350660.

ConifersOctober is the best time of the year to plant

trees and shrubs, especially conifers. Being

hardy, easy to care for and long lasting,

conifers are the ideal choice for any gardener

looking for a low maintenance but high impact

plant.Conifers are a great way of adding colour and

shape to any outdoor space and look just as

good in a container on the patio as they do in

a more spacious setting.

Plant of the month facts

lthough we had some warmer days over September, the autumn chill is setting in and it’s feeling much colder. It’s a beautiful time of year though, and on nice days the changing colour of the trees looks fantastic against clear blue skies.

| Your garden

Garden Jobs for October• Clear up fallen autumn leaves regularly. - Sometimes it may seem pointless raking up fallen leaves when the wind blows even more onto the lawn. If they are left they will block out light and air penetration to the grass and the lawn will take longer to recover in the spring.

• Cut back perennials that have died down. - Lift and divide over crowded herbaceous plants. Now is also a good time to plant new herbaceous perennials as the soil is still warm but moister than it was during the summer.

• Take out the last of the summer bedding. - Any remaining summer bedding will be looking very tired and is best cleared and replaced for a fresher display. Pansy and viola will give a splash of instant colour. Wallflowers, myositis, primula – these can all be planted now in preparation for spring.

• Lift pots off the ground. - Raise patio containers on to bricks or purpose made pot feet to avoid them sitting in water during the winter.

• Plant spring bulbs. - Bulbs for spring should be planted now and once planted can be left in place to flower every year as they would in the wild.

• Last chance to mow lawns and trim hedges. - This month is the last chance to scarify, aerate and top dress lawns. Afterwards apply an autumn feed. Deciduous hedges should be trimmed to keep them looking tidy over the winter.

Interesting articles to help you understand your body better.

Water balance

Contact DetailsAddress: Grosvenor House, Grosvenor Road, Whittlesey PE7 1AQ;

T : 01733 785214, W: www.whittlesey-osteopaths.com, E: [email protected]

We can go for a few weeks without food but we will only last a few days without water. Why is this? We have elluded to the answer in previous articles but this month we wish to make it the focus. Starting at the beginning, consumption of pure water actually aids our dential hygiene. The water moves through our mouth and thus transports any bacteria and food products that maybe lurking into the stomach. This Improves our breath as well as protecting our teeth. Once the water enters our stomach it mixes with the churned food to form a soft slimy product called chyme. This chyme then flows through our intestines where it is broken down and absorbed. If our chyme is more watery (less viscous) then it will flow easier and our absorption of nutrients will be better. Our bowel movements will be easier too. Some of the absorbed water moves into our blood and using the same reasoning, if we have more water in our blood then the easier the blood will flow. Hence our heart does not have to work as hard [to move the blood] and there will be less friction between the blood and the blood vessels walls meaning our blood pressure will be lower. The remainder of the water moves into the spaces between our cells as well as into the cells itself. Water is the medium for all our chemical reactions and these reactions govern our life. This means if we have more water then our chemical reactions are optimised and so our body functions better. Water is present in our skin cells. As our skin is in contact with the air it losses moisture quickly and dries out. Drinking water replenishes the skin as well as giving it form and strength. This is the main reason why babies skins are softer then adults because they hold more water then adults do. Interestingly the water also suspends our organs within the cavities they reside. Think of how much lighter you feel in a swimming pool. The same is true for our organs meaning there is less contact with the hard surfaces of our bones reducing the risk of trauma. The water will finally make its way into the kidneys where it passes through the filters before being removed via the bladder and it’s associated tubes. The constant flow of water (I.e. with a good water intake we urinate at a greater frequency) it acts as a cleaning mechanism. Obviously what is held in the bladder is waste and, like any waste, if it remains it provides a breading ground for bacteria. Frequent urination prevents its reside time and hence the chance of bladder, kidney or urinogenital infections. Drinking pure water is the best means to get water into our bodies as the additions of sugars and caffeine have side effects. But remember, like all things there is a balance. Too much water consumption can be dangerous. The best way to gauge how much is right for you is to drink water when you are thirsty. Interestingly it is a well proven fact that many of us confuse the signal of thirst as hunger, thus we eat instead of drinking when we are thirsty! We hope this has been enlightening. Have a great month.

he sun was shining in the clear blue sky as the crowds gathered to cheer on the parade as it wound its way from Broad Street to the Market Square. This was just the start of a fantastic day that was had on the 07 September, the day of the Whittlesey Festival. Organisers would like to say a huge ‘Thank You’ to all those that supported the day, people came from far and wide and it really was a tremendous fun –filled, action packed day with lots of smiling faces to be seen. Children enjoyed free face painting, puppet shows and fairground rides amongst many other activities. There was plenty to do for the adults and everyone enjoyed watching the various dance and music presentations including the spectacular display of the Massed Bands with Peterborough Highland Band, Sutherland Pipes and Drums and Bedford Pipes and Drums band. Another ‘Wow moment’ of this year’s Festival was the World War II Spitfire and Hurricane fly-past. It was truly an amazing sight as they delighted the crowds. It was very emotional too as it served as a reminder of all those loyal folk

who fought on our behalf during the war. Another highlight was the display of over 100 classic vehicles that lined the main streets. This really brought back memories for many classic car fans, and present day enthusiasts alike. The Festival Schools Art Exhibition was held at the Whittlesey Christian Church with work on display from local schools including Park Lane, Alderman Jacobs, New Road, Coates and Sir Harry Smith Community College ( SHSCC). Prizes and trophies were awarded on Festival day by the Mayor of Whittlesey. Look out for an exclusive feature on the Art Competition in the November issue of Discovering Whittlesey. Another popular competition that took place was the Beautiful Baby competition with the winner being awarded a complimentary portrait session courtesy of ‘The Studio’ in Whittlesey. There was plenty to see and do with something for everyone and we are already looking forward to next year. Finally a note from Pauline Edge, Chairman,

Festival Committee: “ After a wonderful day, I would like to thank the following people for all their hard work, John Sharpe for the Classic Car Display, Marija Lysak for the Art competition, David Bailey for putting on a great musical display, Brian Smithyman for all his hard work on the day and during the year, also the Festival Committee for their total dedication. Once again, I would like to thank the people of Whittlesey, along with their families and friends for their continued support. A lady from Cambridge was at the Festival and she came up to me and said what a wonderful Community we have in Whittlesey. I completely agree with her and hope to see you all again at our 8th Whittlesey Festival to be held on Sunday 6th September 2015.” If you would like more information on how you can get involved in the next Festival please contact Pauline Edge on 01733 208414 or Jenny Parker on 01733 351005.

to begin wreaking havoc in the big city. Even with the combined forces of the U.S. military to fight the monster, will it be enough to save the people of New York?

And so begins the 2014 version of this famous creature, Godzilla. Starring Matthew Broderick, Jean Reno and Maria Pitillo, to name but a few, and directed by Gareth Edwards, this film is a reboot of the Godzilla film franchise and retells the origins of the creature in contemporary times.

Like the 1954 original, this film is a combination epic horror film and parable of nature in revolt, filled with off ellipses and surprising but appropriate storytelling choices, such as an early monster duel. The film is breathtaking, and borrows elements from The War of the Worlds and Jaws. Godzilla doesn’t just show, it unveils and builds sequences gradually, withholding important information until the end of a scene. This gives it a great climatic feel and an exciting film to watch..

Preparing for Retirement

The age at which retirement occurs is governed mainly by when it is affordable rather than solely on when the state pension becomes payable. I mention this because some clients tell me that they cannot retire until age 66 or 67 follow-ing recent shifts in government legislation. Other pension benefits may well be accessible but it pays to get professional advice because some-times there is a penalty if benefits are taken before a certain age. From this you might deduce that in order to retire ‘early’ you need to have started planning early – this is true but retirement affordability is different to each individual, having enough income without working does not necessarily rely on a pension even if it is one of the most tax efficient ways of doing so. An awareness of your personal state pension entitlement is a good starting point. The basic full pension is £113.10 per week for a single person. This can be increased to £148.35 if you qualify for the standard minimum guarantee. An illustra-tion can be requested from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). If this is all you get – could you manage on this level of income? Other plans include inheritances, using the equity built up in property, an ongoing busi-ness, the sale of a business, part time / phased retirement or investments. Quite often plans are a combination of plans – each with it’s owns set of advantages, drawbacks and tax implications.

Being clear on your plan involves having a plan in the first place and being aware of the options that are available. As they sometimes say – If you don’t know where you’re going – any road will lead you there’ To make a clear financial ‘road map’ requires skill and knowledge, if you want a second opin-ion or some help in sharpening the focus of your retirement plan speak to an independent finan-cial adviser that will make sense of the assets and opportunities for you.

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or any other debt secured on it. This is an equity release plan. To understand the features and risks, ask for a personalised illustration. The value of the investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back as much as you put in.

DON’T LET THE BADDIES GET HOLD OF THE GOODIES,

MAKE A WILLTrust me, making a Will, won’t kill you.

What making a Will, will do, is give you peace of mind, ensure that your last wishes are carried out and most importantly make what is one of the most difficult times for those left behind a little easier to deal with.

In a short article, it is not possible to go into the Intestacy Rules (dying and not leaving a Will) but for your average family, especially with house prices increasing and thus, the value of your estate increasing, more thought really needs to be given to making a Will.

Unfortunately, due to the increase in the divorce rate, we now find that many people have two families their own children the new spouses’ children from a former relationship and then your own

children.

In these circumstances, you really need to take proper legal advice. You may have to change the way that you own your property (joint tenants or tenants in common) I will explain this in a future article, as tenants has no reference to what is widely known as a tenant.

You can try and make a home made Will from a nationwide stationer, I am sure that others are available. However, as a practitioner, you often find that these are not correctly signed or are stained or torn which makes proving the Will to the probate registry difficult.

Good solicitors provide a competent service at a reasonable cost. It’s for the future of your family.

|Community newsWhittlesey Lady drops 6 stone and changes her life

Fiona Rippon, from Whittlesey, lost weight with her local Slimming World group in Whittlesey, and has dropped from 17st to 11st in just 18 months. And her transformation hasn’t gone unrecognised as Fiona has just been named the Tuesday 5.30pm group’s Woman of the Year 2014. Around one in four women in the UK and Ireland are already severely overweight and at risk of suffering a range of health problems including diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Slimming World’s Woman of the Year competition recognises the achievements of women in making long-term healthy lifestyle changes for themselves and their families. Fiona was voted by the 5.30pm members of the Tuesday group to be their representative in the regional competition. Fiona joined Slimming World after becoming increasingly unhappy with her size. She says: “I gained a lot of my weight through comfort eating but when my husband passed away I comfort ate more and knew I needed to do something about it. I tried lots of different diets but they usually left me feeling hungry and miserable. Slimming World is completely different, I never have to go hungry and after losing 6st I’m the happiest I’ve been in years! Ive been able to have the surgery I need for my hip and now enjoy dancing and walking, only things I ever dreamed of before. The 60 -year-old started following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, which is based on satisfying even the largest of appetites so slimmers never feel deprived or hungry. She’s cut out many of the convenience foods and sugary snacks she used to rely on, and loves trying out all the delicious healthy recipes she picks up from other members at her Slimming World group. She says: “My family and friends are all amazed how much I can eat and still lose weight. I cook for them now and they can’t believe it’s all healthy food because it tastes so good. I still eat all the same meals that I did before but now I cook and prepare them differently, I cook with less oil and fat and choose lean meat now. “I know a lot of people worry about joining a slimming club – they don’t know what to expect.

But from the minute I walked into Slimming World, the support I’ve received from my Consultant Gemma Lee and the rest of the group has been brilliant,” adds Fiona. “At first I was extremely nervous, especially about stepping on the scales, but straightaway I was made to feel welcome and now it’s like a night out with friends. I couldn’t have done it without them. It’s like having 60 cheerleaders on your side, when you’re doing well they spur you on further and when you’re struggling they motivate you to keep going. “I never dreamt I could achieve so much. I’ve gone from a size 20 to a 10 and it’s made such a huge difference – it’s changed my life. I’ve got so much more energy and I can do things now that I couldn’t before. I feel like a winner already, so being voted the Tuesday 5.30pm group’s Woman of the Year 2014 is just the icing on the cake.” Gemma Lee, who runs the Whittlesey Tuesday group, says: “I’m so proud of Fiona. Not only does she look fabulous, she’s improved her health and is bursting with energy. She’s a huge inspiration to everyone in our group and I hope she inspires other women in Whittlesey to change their lives in the same way. It can be hard to admit that you need to do something about your weight and to ask for help, but I think Fiona shows just what’s possible when you do.”

The Whittlesey Slimming World group is held every Tuesday at 9.30am, 11.30am, 5.30pm and 7.30pm at Childers 1 a Station Road. To join or find out more call Gemma on 01733350091/ 07456864419. For further information please contact Gemma Lee on 07456 864419 or email [email protected]

|Motoring news “TWIGGIES TIPS”Hello there, my name is Mark Twigg from MT Cars and MTC Subaru in Whittlesey, and we thought it would be a nice/good idea to help you with ei-ther purchasing a new/used car, maintaining your car of even simply staying safe in your current car, and on the odd occasion reporting to you the latest news relating to cars and the running of.

You will no longer need to make a separate application for a refund of vehicle tax. DVLA will automatically issue a refund when a notification is received from the person named on DVLA vehicle register that the:• Vehicle has been sold or transferred • Vehicle has been scrapped at an Authorised Treatment Facility• Vehicle has been exported • Vehicle has been removed from the road and the person on the vehicle register has made a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN)• Person on the vehicle register has changed the tax class on the vehicle to an exempt duty tax classPaying vehicle tax by Direct DebitFrom 1 October 2014 (5 October if setting up at a Post Office®), Direct Debit will be offered as an additional way to pay for vehicle tax. This will be available for customers who need to tax their vehicle from 1 November 2014:• Annually• 6 monthly• Monthly (12 months tax paid for on a monthly basis) Provided an MOT remains valid, the payments will continue automatically until you tell DVLA to stop taking them or you cancel the Direct Debit with your bank. The Direct Debit will be cancelled and payments automatically stopped when you tell DVLA that you no longer have the vehicle, or the vehicle has

been taken off the road and a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) has been made. When the Direct Debit scheme can’t be usedPaying by Direct Debit will not be available to:• First registration vehicles• Fleet schemes• HGVs that pay the Road User Levy (all other HGVs can pay by Direct Debit)

• MT Cars, 157 Eastrea Road, Whittlesey PE7 2AJ. 01733 202098.

This being the first edition of our new column we thought we would kick it off with the new rules on the tax disc situation From 1 October 2014, the paper tax disc will no longer need to be displayed on a vehicle wind-screen. If you have a tax disc with any months left to run after this date, then it can be removed from the vehicle windscreen and destroyed. What this means to youTo drive or keep a vehicle on the road you will still need to get vehicle tax and DVLA will still send you a renewal reminder when your vehicle tax is due to expire. This applies to all types of vehicles including those that are exempt from payment of vehicle tax. Buying a vehicleFrom 1 October, when you buy a vehicle, the vehicle tax will no longer be transferred with the vehicle. You will need to get new vehicle tax be-fore you can use the vehicle. You can tax the vehicle using the New Keeper Supplement (V5C/2) part of the vehicle regis-tration certificate (V5C) online or by using our automated phone service - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Alternatively, you may wish to visit a Post Of-fice® branch.Selling a vehicleIf you sell a vehicle after 1 October and you have notified DVLA, you will automatically get a refund for any full calendar months left on the vehicle tax. STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Whittlesey, Eastrea & Coates areas and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Remembrance Parade - 9th November Remembrance Day is always a very poignant day for all Service and Ex Service men and women who have served the Queen and Country. The Parade in Whittlesey will leave the Ivy Leaf at 2.00pm and march to the memorial on Queen Street for a Service of Remembrance, followed by a Church Service at St

Mary’s Church. The Royal British Legion and Whittlesey Town Council welcome everyone to attend the Parade and Service. If you wish to take part in the parade please be at the Ivy leaf for 1.15. If any new groups wish to march in the

parade, please contact either myself at the Town Council Offices or Judy Darby on 07724

081024 or Ray Thrower 07850 680785.

At last the Awards ceremony is over and we know what we have achieved in 2014. Last year we were awarded a Silver Award and this year we have gone up a grade to Silver Gilt. In the Chair of Judges Report it was noted that some of last year’s entrants, on gaining a Gold Award in 2013, appeared to take the “foot off the pedal” and have dropped back to Silver Gilt. It was emphasised that the judges can only comment on what they see during the judging tour and what they are informed about during the 15 minute presentation and briefing prior to the tour and also what is put into the portfolio. It is quite clear that we cannot “take our feet off the pedal” if we want to win Gold in the future. The judges’ report states that Whittlesey is a very interesting town where the In Bloom team have worked hard on some different colourful projects. Outstanding is the word used to describe The Pound and the Diamond Jubilee Beds and a certificate was received in recognition of these projects in the Best Floral Display by an Individual or Community category. Similarly a certificate for nomination in the Best Diversity Award category was awarded to the Lattersey Nature Reserve; the judges comment states that “the Reserve not only provides a fenland wildlife retreat but also gives the public a natural walking area”. Other Areas of Achievement highlighted are The Garden of Rest, Station Road, St Mary’s Church Gardens, the work of the Sir Harry Smith Community College students, New Road Allotments, the Town Cemetery, the Market Square hanging baskets and the Boat and Plough Flower Beds at the Delph and Plough

Whittlesey in Bloom - the resultsRoad respectively. Specific additional Silver Gilt Certificates were awarded to the Cemetery and The Garden of Rest. There are four areas for improvement noted by the judges; these are – to continue with the work at the Cemetery and the Garden of Rest Rose beds; to involve more businesses and to give evidence of more year round activity. Our volunteers will take these comments on board and we will strive to improve year on year. As indicated in last month’s article we have agreed to open The Pound to the public on Wednesday 1 October between the hours of 10.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. Further dates will be arranged and advertised. Those of us that form the Whittlesey in Bloom group are dedicated volunteers but more bodies are needed along with the finance to ensure that we can continue. We had a stand at the Whittlesey Festival on 7 September to advertise Whittlesey in Bloom and the Friends of the Cemetery and were pleased so many of you stopped for a chat and congratulated us on what we have done so far. Look out for our logo – the sunflower and buttercross – and hopefully next year it will be Gold that we are celebrating.

Whittlesey's Friendship GroupThe Whittlesey's Friendship Group's had their last summer trip out and paid a visit to Holt and Sher-ingham on the 2nd of September. Once again they were blessed with some lovely sunshine, and a wonderful driver, Tim, from W&M Travel. The day was spent wandering around shops and tea shops, and a trip on the Holt railway was undertaken by a few on the coach trip It also included friends from Germany, Kellz

and Anna. The group hope to make their next trip a visit to a Christmas Market at the end of November or early December. For more information contact Margaret Herstell 01733 350628 or email [email protected] The group meets every Saturday 2pm to 4pm at Queens st URC Methodist church Whittlesey.

King’s Dyke level crossing consultation coming soon

Cambridgeshire County Council is investigating replacing the existing level crossing on the A605 between Whittlesey and Peterborough. Currently around 10,400 vehicles use this road each weekday. A consultation into 3 options for replacing the level crossing will take place between 30 October and 15 December, 2014. Information on the various options will be included in the November edition of the Discovering Whittlesey magazine. There will be the opportunity to give feedback through a tear out questionnaire which can be returned by freepost or filled in online at www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/kingsdyke. Public exhibitions will also be held around the area so

that draft proposals can be discussed in detail with council officers. The level crossing causes lengthy delays to traffic especially at peak times. Currently there are 120 train movements across the level crossing each day which means the level crossing barrier is down for between 8 and 20 minutes an hour. This causes an average delay of 45 seconds per vehicle along the road, however, cars can be waiting for over 7 minutes. Delays are substantially increased when traffic is diverted on to the A605 as a result of flooding on other routes. Look out for more information in the next magazine.

|Community news Poppy stall at Whittlesey Festival with Judy Darby and Ray Thrower

Once again we have to thank the generosity of the local people for coming and having a go on our teddy tombola stall at the recent Whittlesey Festival. The weather was great, the crowds fantastic and the Poppy Appeal stall raised £281.00 on the day. So thanks to all who donated cuddly toys to us and those who came on the day to support us. Our next event is the annual Band Concert on Friday 24th of October as mentioned in last month's magazine. The City of Peterborough Concert Band come to the Ivy Leaf Club and always give us a really enjoyable evening. Tickets are only £5.00 each and can be purchased either from myself or Judy Darby. Our contact numbers are listed below. We are now working hard to organise our major annual event, the Remembrance Day Parade and Service to be held on Sunday the 9th of November. The parade will assemble at 13.15 at the Ivy Leaf Club and march off at 14.00. More details will be available nearer the time in the next issue.

For the Remembrance fortnight leading up to the Sunday Parade we will be distributing over 100 poppy boxes and collecting tins to shops, businesses, pubs and schools. We will also, as we have done over the last many years, be on the streets of Whittlesey during this time with poppies and collecting tins. If anyone would like to give up a few hours to help us please give us a call. Finally, a quick reminder to all our members that our AGM will be held at the Ivy Leaf Club at 11.00am on SUNDAY 12TH. 2014 Flu Vaccination Clinic Saturday 11 October 2014

This includes patients who have a respiratory disease (including Asthma), heart disease, renal problems, liver disease, Diabetes or a neurological disease such as a stroke. Any
