Well it’s July and our judging day is Thursday July 16th. It will soon be here and our volunteers have been working tirelessly since early May, when the June article was written, preparing the areas that we maintain regularly and also trying to get some of the grot spots tidied. Remember last month I said that we hoped to make contact with some of the owners along the route to get some remedial work carried out? Well, we have been successful in some; thank you to Rose Homes for “hiding” the eyesore of the old Morley’s office with hoarding. Unfortunately, we were not as successful with others. As promised, last month, I said we would indicate the route that will be taken by the judges; this is as follows: Starting at the Manor Leisure Centre at 9.15 a.m. travelling along Station Road to the Garden of Rest and a walk also to St Mary’s Church Gardens, before looking at the regenerated Market Square with the new planters and hanging baskets, and also the barrier planters on the corner of Queen Street and High Causeway. Next, the Street Pride Rose Garden at the junction of Whitmore Street and Church Street, before heading to Park Lane School and then on to the Plough Garden at the junction of Plough Road, and the Delph Boat Garden, before looking at the area at the western end of the New Queen Street Surgery car park. From High Causeway, we go on to the Cemetery; our Friends group has been very busy this year. The Cemetery is included within a special group of Parks and Cemeteries, that also has a separate judging day, July 9th. Next, we travel on to Grosvenor Road, as we believe that the regeneration of both the north and south car parks has enhanced our town considerably and “In Bloom” is not just about flowers. The judges take a lot of other things into consideration. We then drive past the flower beds at the junction of Eastgate/Cemetery Road and Inhams Road, on our way to the Lattersey Nature Reserve, another different area that you probably wouldn’t have thought was part of “In Bloom” - where bio-diversity is considered by the judges. Whilst in New Road, we then visit our allotments, before heading off to The Pound in Aliwal Road. Finally a look at the Bower River, locks and picnic area before returning to the Manor Leisure Centre, where we will entertain our judges to lunch, before they venture off to another town for the afternoon judging. Hopefully, if you live on the route, you will do your bit to assist. If you see a rogue weed, please pull it up and no dog mess thank you. If you have a canine friend, please ensure you do your bit and pick up. We did lose points last year because of

Whittlesey in Bloommess at Lattersey Nature Reserve. Having given you the route, I will bring you up to date with other things we have been doing. On June 1st, the new bench seat was installed in the Cemetery. Our thanks to Sandra Lawton for arranging the Christmas draw which raised the funds for the seat. Friday June 12th saw the barrier planters installed. These had been planted up at the nursery and hopefully they will enhance the town. While volunteers were ensuring the planters were fixed securely, we had a street collection to raise some much-needed funds. We have a permit to have another street collection on Sunday July 26th, when the town will be buzzing for the third Circuit of the Fens Cycle Race. Our next “event” will be appearing at the Festival on Sunday September 6th. We will be having a display of our portfolio and yes, another street collection. We had been approached by a resident, Sue Spence, who wished to donate and plant another rose in the Pound. On behalf of us all, I would like to express our thanks to Sue for donating her WI Centenary Rose Bush - Inspiration - to us where it will remain for all WI Ladysmith members and others to see and admire. I have also received an anonymous handwritten note with a donation asking for a perfumed rose to be planted in the Pound. We are currently looking for a rose which will fill the criteria asked for. Whoever sent the donation, on behalf of the “In Bloom” group, I thank you. The Pound has now been planted up for the summer. I hope you noticed the front cover picture of the June edition was of the glorious pansy bed at the entrance to the Manor Leisure Centre. Since that picture was taken, the overgrown shrubs inside the gates have been cut out and soon the railings will be given a new lick of paint. We thank Fenland District Council and the Community Pay Back team for their assistance in tidying up the area. The beds at the Manor entrance have now been dug over in readiness for being planted. No doubt when you read this it will all be completed. We work with the District and Town Councils and other organisations and businesses in trying to enhance our town. Once again, on behalf of the “Whittlesey in Bloom” team of volunteers, thanks for your support.

NEWS ABOUT WHITTLESEY U3A

You may have heard about the hiatus on opening day, when we were forced, at very short notice, to reconvene the Inaugural Meeting to the Scaldgate Centre. The Steering Committee were heartened that over one hundred folk came along, with many having to stand patiently throughout due to a lack of seating! (Whittlesey U3A is indebted to staff at Scaldgate for their most generous offer). Despite this, over seventy made a commitment to become members of Whittlesey’s new U3A, with others taking away forms for themselves and others. After signing up, members were invited to put their names on lists of various “Interest Groups”, from which Sandra, our Groups Co-ordinator, will work out the mechanics of getting them started. The ethos of the U3A is that all activities are led by members for other members, with no examinations taken or awards made, to help keep the “old grey cells” going! Learning activities such as language sessions in French and Spanish, art classes and photography are proposed, as well as games and leisure pastimes like bridge, genealogy, mah-jong, walking, singing, etc. In fact, a well subscribed table tennis group was set up on the very first week, with two sessions weekly at Pondersbridge Village Hall! If that interests you, then why not become a member and join in that or any

All-Girls Marching Band to perform at the Whittlesey Festival

Crowds at the Whittlesey Festival on Sunday September 6th will be treated to the spectacular sound of All-Girls Marching Band, the Haverettes. The Band is based in Havering on the Greater London and Essex border, and has members from across both these areas. This year, the band celebrates its fiftieth anniversary, and we are delighted that they will be joining us at the Festival. They are a military-style marching band who are well known in this country and in Europe, having taken part in national parades in London and Europe, including Germany, Holland, Norway and Belgium, as well as having performed at Disneyland Paris and across the USA. The band is regularly involved in numerous events, ranging from competitions, fetes, town shows and parades. They have also been invited in recent years to take part in video shoots for music videos and have played at prestigious football grounds. The Haverettes were formed in 1965 by Alf and Sylvia Smith, owing to their daughter, and other girls,only being allowed to follow behind a band in a ‘Majorette’ fashion. The decision was made to form an all-girls marching band, which it still is today. From the humble beginnings of knowing and competing with just one tune, the band now has an amazing routine and extensive repertoire. Over the years, the band has had a major impact at various levels in national competitions, and regularly compete at the highest level in major TYMBA-run contests having been the first all-girls marching band to be ‘Supreme National Champions’ in 2009, alongside being crowned National Class League Champions, and being undefeated for the entire year. As well as the Haverettes, we will once again be privileged to be joined by the Peterborough Highland Band, filling the air with their unmistakable, powerful, poignant sound of pipes and drums.The Festival runs from 10am – 4:30pm, starting with a parade from Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street and is truly a fun day out for all the family. There are plenty of stalls, music, dance and lots of activities to keep you entertained and amused throughout the day. These are just a selection of things going on during the Festival. There is so much more to do and see, and we look forward to seeing you there. Effie Hadman, who has Batten Disease, has inspired organisers to plan a charity football match on July 26th. Posh legends will take to the field in Drybread Road, to play against REC Whittlesey. Money raised will go to Effie’s quality of life. The match will start at 10:30am and entry is £2 for adults and £1 for children. Alex Miscandlon

My name is Alex Miscandlon, and I have the privilege and honour of being elected the new Mayor of Whittlesey to take over from Councillor David Mason, who I must say, has done an absolutely sterling job during his tenure. I wish to thank him whole-heartedly and look forward to picking his brains when I require any assistance.

The Deputy Mayor this year is Cllr Ralph Butcher, who takes on this position with a wealth of experience, and is someone I know I can rely on. On a personal note, I have lived in the Whittlesey area for over thirty years, along with my wife Patricia and my son Anthony, who attended both Coates Primary and Sir Harry Smith. When I worked in industry, I was a qualified tool maker and worked for an international company in Peterborough, trouble-shooting plastic injection moulds all over Europe. On my retirement, and in conversations with Whittlesey and District Cllr. Mrs Pam Potts BEM, I became very interested in the town council and realised this was a perfect time to stand for election, at both the town and district level. At the subsequent elections, I was successful at both town and district and, consequently, replaced Cllr Mrs Pam Potts BEM, who is the retiring councillor. At Fenland District Council, I currently hold the position of Chairman of Planning and am a member of the Licensing Committee.

With the elections on the May 7th, some of our long-standing councillors stood down, and I wish to offer my personal thanks to Pauline Edge, Ken Mayor, Derek Stebbing, Gary Swan and Roy Gerstner for their past efforts. I would also like to welcome the new members of Whittlesey Town Council: Cllr. Mrs Julie Windle, Cllr. Ray Whitwell, Cllr. Eamonn Dorling, Cllr. Bob Wicks and Cllr. Chris Boden. I would also like to welcome back all sitting councillors who were re-elected. I look forward to meeting as many members of the public as possible. With my new position, I don’t have a lot of spare time but, with the time I do have, I enjoy following all types of motorsport; this has always been a keen interest of mine as I was a senior instructor and examiner for the BMF for thirty-two years. ime passes and the town grows in prosperity. Three hundred and fifty years from the initial siting of Whittlesey between the two churches, the town expands up the lanes that will become High Causeway and Church Street. Boats travel across the fens from Briggate and Delph, bringing in news as well as trade. Rumours of the plague had been circulating and though it seemed to be rife in London and the ports, men thought the countryside would be safe. Even so, candles were lit and a lot of folk who had scoffed openly at religion, suddenly became avid churchgoers. It was on the Feast of St Mark that word came that the plague had reached Cambridge. Men crowded round the boatmen arriving from the mother house at Ely, with Abbey servants hoping to escape it. John Attebridge, his wife Cateryn and their two little girls watched the grey faced travellers making their way up Church Street towards St Andrews. “I knew this would happen,” John said. “Cateryn, we cannot stay here. Once it takes hold in the town there will be no escape.” His wife looked up at him. “But our parents John, we just can’t leave them here. And where will we go? Where is going to be safer than here?” John put his arm around his wife and drew her, and the children, into the privacy of their cottage.“I’ve been preparing for this Cate. We are going to the turf grounds east of Coates. There’ll be fish, water and shelter there. We can live in the summer hut well away from any danger from this evil.” That night, the family borrowed a cart and horse from the Reeve and set out for Coates. They saw other small groups, some on foot and a few, of the more wealthy peasants, on horseback making their way out of town. “You see,” John said, “it’s happening already. Those that can, will leave. Some early, like us. Others will run when the plague reaches the town. They will be the cause of the spread as much as anything else.” Cateryn didn’t reply, too full of grief and worry about her neighbours and family. John got down from the cart at the White Cross near Eastrea, kneeling in prayer while Cateryn watched, the children asleep, their heads pillowed on her lap. They passed through the Green at Coates, folk peering out at them. They turned down the lane beside the mere and then along the droveways to

the little hut, in the lee of a grove of willow trees that John had built on his family’s turf diggings. They unloaded the cart and, while his wife settled the children, John took the horse and cart back to the town and, dog tired, made the return journey. The family settled to make the best of their circumstances, and while the children enjoyed this adventure, their parents watched anxiously for the sight of anyone coming near them. They could see across the flat landscape that others had taken the same course of action, but no one came closer than shouting distance. It was from them that they learnt of the impact the plague had brought. Both the priests at the churches had died and most of the townsfolk. All the monks and lay folk at St Andrews had perished, and most of those at St Mary’s. There were not enough alive to bury the dead, and bodies rotted in their cottages. The Abbot of Thorney sent a replacement for the vicar of St Mary’s but he had also died. When John and Cateryn came home in the autumn, the town was almost unrecognisable. Many of the cottages had been burnt to the ground; others were derelict, bereft of doors or windows, stripped of whatever could be carried away. Even though John had boarded up his house, it had been ransacked, but was luckily still standing. As one of the few tenants remaining, John was appointed the Reeve and helped the others rebuild their community. Ten years later, in 1361, the Black Death returned again. “Wretched, terrible destructive year, the remnants of the people alone remain”, (graffiti in a Hertfordshire church from 1350).

My name is Fred Mills and I have recently been elected chairman of Whittlesey Streetpride for this year. Some of you may recognise me as the man with the sandwich board and the bowler hat who wanders around the Whittlesey Festival each year. Alternately, you may have seen me litter-picking along the Peterborough road. I enjoy the chance to get about and do a bit for the community. It’s very rewarding and extremely satisfying when you look back and see a nice clean verge behind you. Would you like to give it a go? We only do litter-picking once a fortnight, and then only for one hour from 10am to 11am. We supply the litter-picking tool, bags and “hi-viz” jacket. Age is not an issue, but we do require under-18s to be accompanied by an adult. Enthusiasm and a sense of community spirit are what we are after. Do you think you are up for the job?

Whittlesey Business ForumA meeting was held last month to try and address recent problems encountered by local traders, and to re-form a Business Forum for the benefit of the town as a whole. Each attendee introduced themselves and their business, along with difficulties that had been encountered of late, principally through lack of footfall and a lack of prior warning of the the re-siting of the bus location from the Buttercross to Grosvenor Road. It was also felt that the area around High Causeway and Blunts Lane was ignored during the times of the four festivals in the town: Straw Bear, Circuit of the Fens Cycle, Whittlesey Festival and Christmas Extravaganza. The benefits of a positive forum would be greater representation through the Whittlesey Town Council on forthcoming planning issues; co-ordination of information through Fenland District Council on future events; awareness of local organisations (such as Whittlesey Christmas Lights Committee, Street Pride, Whittlesey in Bloom) and a general exchange of

ideas amongst the traders themselves for mutual benefit. Discussion took place on the merits of encouraging national companies to invest in the town, for example Greggs Bakery, Costa Coffee, Edinburgh Woollen Mills, and the likely effect of a new Sainsbury’s store on the edge of town. Opportunities for funding of specific projects, such as Christmas Lights, were discussed, along with other areas of grant funding. The evening concluded with the suggestion of forming a Steering Committee at the next meeting, from which a constitution could be formed. Those present were asked to circulate information to other traders who had been unable to attend this meeting. The date of the next meeting was confirmed as Monday July 13th 2015, at the earlier time of 6pm at Grosvenor House, and any interested party is most welcome to attend.Cllr. WHITTLESEY CYCLING WEEKEND - July 25th & 26th 2015

On Sunday July 26th, Whittlesey will again be host to the top UK-based road racing cyclists when the restyled 'Circuit of the Fens Pro-Elite Classic' returns to the Fenland market town as a part of the Whittlesey Cycling Weekend. The Pro-Elite Classic, with its motor-cycle escort, the convoy of official cars and team support vehicles, will provide a truly great spectacle. Now it its third year, the 'Pro-Elite Classic' at 135 miles will be the longest race on British Cycling's national calendar. Only the International Tour of Britain in September will have longer stages. Although ranked as a 'National A' race, the organisers chose not to be a part of BC's Elite Series this year. However, that should make the race more interesting, without riders having to defend their overall positions, leaving them to ride in a much more aggressive manner. The big teams are expected to enter, now that the televised Tour Series has reached its conclusion. Meanwhile, the race is attracting entries from the smaller teams and individual riders which is a good sign that the event is becoming established. Of the professional set-ups, NFTO, who provided last year's winner in Adam Blythe, are due to enter a strong squad, and the new Team Wiggins are reported to have the race in their schedule too. The supporting 75 mile 'Circuit of the Fens' for experienced club riders, has also now become a 'must-ride' event with entries arriving from all over the country. Under BC rules, places are strictly limited, consequently the organisers have now introduced another race into the day's programme - the 57 mile 'Benwick Kermesse', in order to accept as many riders as possible. The Benwick race will start at 9am at 'The

Five Awls' and finish there at 11.15am, covering six laps of a 9.5 mile circuit around the village, taking in Dykemoor Drove and Forty Foot Bank. The two original races will start from Market Place Whittlesey at 12 noon and 12.05 respectively. The amateur race will finish at around 3pm and the Pro-Elite Classic at 5pm, depending a lot upon the weather conditions. Once the neutralised section past Whittlesey Railway Station has been completed, the race will follow the now established 17.3 mile circuit, comprising Turningtree Road – Grassmoor Bank – Pondersbridge – Ramsey Mereside – Ramsey Forty Foot – Benwick – Angle Corner – Turningtree. On reaching Benwick for the fourth time, the route will move onto another circuit of fifteen miles, via Dykemoor Drove – Doddington Road – Forty Foot Bank – Puddock Road – Ramsey Forty Foot – Benwick. After three laps of the new circuit, the race will return as in previous years via the narrow and challenging, mainly concrete, Wype Road towards Whittlesey. The first 64 miles will be run over generally good surfaces and the new circuit is also reasonably surfaced but will include some narrow stretches. The route will NOT INCLUDE the un-made Cross Drove (despite the spectacular film coverage of last year). The four mile finishing circuit has been slightly revised to improve race security, and the number of laps reduced to five in line with UCI regulations. The route for the 75 mile race will cover almost four laps of the Pondersbridge – Benwick circuit, before heading back via Wype Drove and Beggar's Bridge, and along the A605 through Coates and Eastrea into Whittlesey to finish by Market Place without a finishing circuit.

What struck me was the obvious feeling of despair and confusion in the one being interviewed. Yet another life had been taken because someone had vented their anger in a totally depraved manner. In attempting to solve, or even understand these issues, it would be very easy to lay the blame at such things as up-bringing, apparent poverty, or having no job or future prospects. When people realise I’m a minister, they even lay the blame at God’s door. Making sense of modern life, and the seemingly endless reports

of murder, wars, domestic violence, rape, terrorism, and child abuse (the list could go on), we must look at life as a whole, not simply fragments of life. What influence do such things as the increasing array of violence in computer games and TV programmes play? The fact is that the media reports on more negative items than positive, apparently because, we are told, it sells more newspapers and increases viewing. Life is becoming more complex, and making the most of our life, or finding solutions to its many challenges, requires we become more versatile and open to possible answers. Our church has a clear two-fold policy which leads us to: 1, Never force God down everyone’s throat and 2, Never to apologise for what the Bible teaches. When people, who may not even believe in God, come for counselling, they are normally positively surprised when I quote something which perfectly fits their particular situation. They are even more surprised when they realise it actually comes from the Bible. Try God, you may be surprised.

| Policing your area by Paul Harris, Whittlesey Geographic SergeantIt’s been a busy month for the team, with various crimes being committed throughout the town. Firstly, we had to contend with the issue of a robbery series. This was very disturbing as it appeared that elderly people were being targeted, either at cash machines withdrawing money, or in isolated places. In response to this, we prioritised it as our mission to stop the offences occurring and catch the offender. This was through both visible policing and plain-clothes operations. As a result of this, no further offences have occurred. We then had a young person decide on a crime spree one afternoon through the town. This lead to a robust but proportionate quick arrest of the individual concerned. They were charged with public order offences, resisting arrest, theft and

possession of drugs. With warmer summer nights approaching, we have seen an increase once again in theft from cars and vans. We have placed targeted patrols in the area again and are working to catch the offender. Please keep valuables out of sight when leaving your cars and vans; never be afraid to report a suspicious person. It’s your vital information that often gives us the missing link we are looking for to make arrests and bring about charges. On race day for this year’s Circuit of the Fens, we will be bike-stamping with the police cadets. So if you wish to have your two wheels marked by us, please attend the police station from 10:30-14:00. Once again thank you for your help and co-operation.

The club also have a healthy match fishing scene, which this year, for the very first time, includes matches on several of our local commercial fisheries. In fact, since they began in May, they have been very successful and will continue most Saturdays throughout the season. | Fishing news by Ken Wade on a Tuesday evening, with lots of prizes for 12 to 19 year olds. You can get more details at www.whittleseyaa.co.uk. Tench and bream have been the early target for those fishing through the first few weeks of the season, but now skimmers and roach will also start to feed in numbers. The Twenty Foot is, in my opinion, under fished, but with so much water to choose from, you can have a fine day’s sport without another angler in sight. Glassmore Bank is well worth a try for bream and tench, if the venue is holding a little colour, then get some groundbait in with a liberal helping of casters and worms and you could well put a really good net of fish together. Do not dismiss Cock Bank; I know weed can be a problem, but the hot pegs around the Burnt House Bridge are always good for tench through the next couple of months. It’s also a very good section of the drain to try the Drop Shotting approach; basically it’s a relatively new way of catching perch of all sizes on a small runner lure. Call into my shop in Fletton when you have a few minutes to spare, and I will run through this new style of fishing with you, it’s great fun. Our local stillwaters are in fine form. It’s hard to decide which one to visit as they are all producing fish; at this time of year, best baits are usually pellets, red maggot, sweetcorn and in particular luncheon meat. Remember though, if you are off to Decoy lakes, luncheon meat is not allowed.

As mentioned in previous reports the RBL Riders, a national branch of motorcycle enthusiasts, continue to commemorate members of the Armed Forces from the Cambridgeshire Regiment who lost their lives in World War 1. There are 876 services to be held and they are now up to number 61. The next one for Whittlesey is for Pte Hutchcraft and the service will take place at the Whittlesey cemetery at 11.00am on Sunday the 26th of July 2015. There will be refreshments laid on at the Ivy Leaf Club after the service. Everyone is welcome to attend and if anyone knows of any remaining relatives of Pte Hutchcraft we would be happy to pass the details on to RBL Riders. When the ‘fun’ has stopped, how do you ‘stop’?Many people in the United Kingdom place a bet and get a good feeling from doing so. For some, it matters little whether they win or not. Sadly, significant numbers become “hooked”. What may once have been a harmless pastime becomes an all-consuming maelstrom. Some are general, like the Samaritans whose non-judgemental and confidential service is of help to people with all sorts of problems, including problem-gambling - and its accompanying catastrophic consequences, such as debt, homelessness, relationship breakdown, etc. Some are specific, and this article highlights Gamblers Anonymous* (GA) in particular. Gamblers Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem, and help others to do the same. GA holds meetings across the UK and hosts over one hundred and seventy meetings per week. If you think you have a compulsive gambling problem, a meeting is probably the best place you could go, since you can speak directly to other compulsive gamblers who can offer help, advice and support. THE WHITTLESEY INDOOR BOWLS CLUB

For the past four years, we have held a six week training course on Saturday mornings. This year we are starting on the 8th of August at 9.30.am to introduce new-comers to our most enjoyable game. In the past, these introductory courses have proved very successful and resulted in well over 100 people coming along to give it a try. Most have found it to be rewarding and pleasurable, as well as bringing a new challenge for something to do over the winter months.

We will provide the equipment necessary and all we ask is that you bring along a pair of flat soled footwear. We have five separate rinks, each 40 yards long, and six yards wide, and they will be staffed by experienced club members who will show you the way. By the end of the six weeks, you will know whether this is for you and will then decide whether to become a club member.

The main season begins mid-September through to mid-April. During this time, we

run nineteen internal leagues, as well as enjoying weekend friendly fixtures with other clubs. We also run nine individual competitions on a knock-out basis throughout the season. Bowling sessions are for two hours fifteen minutes, and begin at 9.30am, 11.45am, 2.00pm, and 4.30pm, as well as with evening sessions at 7.00pm. In addition to all these, there are daily opportunities to book a rink for extra practice and training etc.

Also, there is a social side to the club, with events usually on Saturday nights, including: quiz nights, Beetle drives, bingo and our New Year’s Eve dinner and dance. We have a fully licensed bar and a good range of hot drinks from our in-house dispenser. With over 260 members, we are probably the biggest club in the town, and are well known to be a very friendly bunch!

Ingredients:• 1 litre water

• 180ml coconut milk

• 3 tablespoons soy sauce

• 3 tablespoons rice wine vinegar

• 1 medium onion, sliced• 2 tablespoons fresh root ginger, minced

• 3 cloves garlic, minced• 500g skinless, boneless chicken breast

fillets (cut into strips)• 3 mushrooms, sliced

• 5 spring onions, chopped• 70g chopped fresh basil leaves

* Rice or noodles

Method:1. Bring rice/noodles to the boil in a pot. Cover, reduce heat to low and

simmer 20 minutes.2. In a bowl, mix the coconut milk, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, and

red chilli flakes.3. In a frying pan or wok, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Stir in the onion, ginger and garlic and cook until lightly browned. Mix in

chicken strips and cook for about three minutes, until browned. Stir in the coconut milk sauce. Continue cooking until sauce is reduced by

about a third. Add the mushrooms, spring onions and basil, and cook

until heated through. Serve over the cooked rice or noodles

The Iron Horse Ranch House has been working hard to locally source the ingredients used in their dishes, so their food has 100% traceability. Since the Market Deeping-based Ranch House is a family business, they have chosen to use as many local family businesses to help them deliver their mission. They will soon be launching a new menu for their fully trained chefs to showcase these fantastic ingredients.

For example, their Ranch House burgers now feature bread from Hambleton Bakery, winners of ITV’s ‘Britain’s Best Bakery: Baker of the Year’. The burgers are delicious, due to the fresh ingredients that are sourced from the finest local suppliers. The 8oz beef burgers and hand cut steaks are sourced from Mick Robinson’s cattle at Toft Farm, Bourne. The meat is handmade into tasty burgers by his daughter Rachel

and son-in-law Duncan at Groovy Foods, Bourne. The Robinsons share the same passion about animal welfare as The Iron Horse; therefore the beef is free-range, grass fed and well looked after. None of the meat is wasted; the brisket is used for their homemade tender pulled brisket.

Other local suppliers include: award-winning free-range chicken from Sutton Hoo, Suffolk; chef’s choice winners M&J Fish, Aylesbury (who have a completely traceable supply chain); Saltby Pig Farm, Saltby; Pearce Brothers Potatoes at Stowgate Farm; and Rowbottom Eggs, Spalding.

The friendly service, fantastic food, and finest ingredients used at the Iron Horse make this a high standard and enjoyable venue.

It is something amazing our body does constantly without ever getting credit for it. The system we are referring to (and shall get due credit today) is the eyes ability to adapt to light and darkness.

As always, let’s go back to basics and run through the how the eye works. The eye lets in light via a varying sized hole termed the pupil. Once light enters, it travels through the eyeball until it hits the back which is filled with two types of receptors termed photoreceptors . You may have come across these receptors, termed rods and cones. Both photoreceptors [rods and cones] contain a pigment (termed photopigment) which is made from vitamin A and a protein. When a particle of light hits the vitamin A it causes its structure to change shape. This shape change induces an electric charge which travels down the optic nerve before being relayed to various parts of your brain. The brain then interrupts the signal into an image.

Too little light and the photoreceptors fail to create the signal and too much light means that there are too many signals being created which overstimulates the brain. The consequence of this are all to clear when we talk about being ‘blinded by the light’. So how does the body regulate this? It’s very simply really but the beauty lies in the simplicity. The body controls:

a) the amount of light entering your eyesb) the sensitivity of the nerves to the light.

Light entering your eyes stimulates the pupil reflex, an involuntary action where the pupil size alters in relation to the amount of light. The brighter the light, the smaller the pupil. Hence less light enters the eye. In darkness the reverse occurs, because we want to capture as much light as possible.

Once the light arrives, the optic nerve can ramp up/down its sensitivity (I.e. it’s acknowledgement) of the signal created by the photopigments. This process however takes time as the nerve has to reorganise itself. Moving from a dark to bright [light adaptation] environment means the nerves downgrade their sensitivity to counteract the many signals created from the vitamin A changing shape. The process takes approximately 4-9mins. This is why we are initially blinded by the light but quickly recover our visual clarity after a few minutes.

When moving the opposite way, light to dark [dark adaptation] our nerves become more sensitivity to accommodate the scarcity of signals. This process takes longer to adapt to, approximately 30mins. This explains why we fumble in the dark for so long when we wake up in the middle of the night!

Cambridgeshire Crimestoppers Tackling Crime on Your Doorstep

The independent crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers is reminding the residents across Cambridgeshire to be aware of doorstep crime during the long days of summer and autumn, and to report any suspicious activity. Doorstep criminals typically employ a number of ruses to gain the confidence of victims before defrauding or stealing from them. They will also target the more vulnerable members of our communities. Between May 2014 and April 2015, there were over 500 instances of suspected rogue trading reported to Cambridgeshire Police. The most common types of doorstep criminals are those more commonly known as ‘rogue traders’. These criminals masquerade as genuine businesses and set out to deliberately overcharge for unsatisfactory goods or services. Typical services preferred by rogue traders are driveway maintenance, pressure-washing, gardening, roofing and guttering. Rogue traders rarely offer the statutory fourteen day cooling-off period applicable for work costing more than £42, often insist on large amounts of cash up front and can be intimidating. Once they have found a victim, they often return in the future under a new guise. Another group of doorstep criminals are those who trick their way into victims’ houses with the intention of stealing any valuables they can find within. These ‘distraction burglars’ often pose as workmen who ask to check something in the house and whilst left alone they, or an accomplice, will look for something easy to steal, such as cash, a handbag or jewellery. Among the most common of the excuses offered are needing to check the water supply and searching for a lost pet or ball.

How to deal with unexpected and unwanted visitors on your doorstep Remember the following 4 principles:• LOCK: Ensure you keep exterior doors and windows locked. • STOP: Before you answer the door, stop and think whether you are expecting anyone. • CHAIN: Put the door bar or chain on. Look through the spyhole or the window to see who it is. Always keep the bar or chain on while you are talking to the person on the doorstep. • CHECK: Ask for and carefully check the caller’s ID card as all genuine callers will always carry

one. If they do not have an ID card then do not let them in.

Doorstep callers are adept at high pressure sales techniques. They will catch you unawares. They are polite, persistent and persuasive and they will rush you to make a decision. Say, "No thank you", and then immediately close the door. Always get three quotes from recommended traders before you go ahead with home maintenance work. There are few better crime prevention measures than having good neighbours. If you live close to an elderly or vulnerable person, you can volunteer to be a Nominated Neighbour. This is an informal Trading Standards scheme whereby, if a vulnerable person receives an unexpected caller, they can immediately direct them to a trusted neighbour. Details as to how to set up a scheme can be found at www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/ncwinfo. Good neighbours can also assist with reporting any suspicious activity in the local community and this is where Crimestoppers can assist, as it allows the public to report crime or suspicious activity completely anonymously any time of the day or night. Cambridgeshire Crimestoppers are keen to gather information to enable the police and Trading Standards to investigate and prevent doorstep crime. Local Chairperson, Lisa Oddy, states: “Doorstep crime victimises the most vulnerable members of the community and we want to put a stop to it in Cambridgeshire. If you know of anyone undertaking such activity, or have seen suspicious persons or vehicles in your neighbourhood, please let us know, completely anonymously, so together we can tackle this criminality.”

Fleas, ticks and worms are all parasites that use our pets to feed from or to live on.

FleasFleas are the most common and can pass from animal to animal. They can live on both dogs and cats, and pass between the two. If you treat one pet, you should treat them all, in a multi-pet household. The amount of fleas you see on your pet is only a small proportion of the total amount of fleas that can be in the environment. Fleas usually only jump on to our pets to feed; they can also be living in your carpets, bedding, under furniture and between floor boards. This may not just be adult fleas, it can also include eggs and larvae. A single flea can produce up to 1,500 eggs each month, and the larvae that pupate can survive dormant in the environment for up to a year. Even though you can’t see any fleas, they could still be in the environment. TicksTicks are distributed widely in the UK, and are attracted to a host when they sense vibration, carbon-dioxide, warmth and humidity of passing animals and even people. They can then attach themselves and begin to feed. Tick saliva contains an anaesthetic, so your dog will not feel

the bite, and neither will you!

Worms Fleas and ticks are not only a pest to our animals, they can be a threat to our health too. Fleas not only bite our pets but they can bite us too, and within this bite, they could transmit infections and other parasites, including tape worm. This is why vets recommend to use a regular worming treatment alongside flea and tick treatment. There is more than just one type of worm, and good worming treatments will cover them all.

The most common include: tapeworm, roundworm, hookworm, whipworm

and lungworm. Your pets can become infected by worms

even if they don’t meet other dogs, or if cats don’t go out. They can get worms by walking in infested soil; hunting birds and mice; eating raw meat; eating snails; swallowing fleas; nursing from an infected

mother; or being bitten by mosquitoes.

If you are using a prescription flea treatment every four weeks, and an environment spray that can kill eggs and larvae, you should be able to prevent an infestation from fleas. Worming with a prescription treatment every three months can keep your pets worm-free and happy too.

Travel Tips to Help Prevent Canine Travel Sickness:

- Get dogs used to travelling in cars as early as possible in their lives and make car journeys a regular occurrence- Introduce dogs to travelling short distances by car and work your way up to longer journeys- Let travelling by car be associated as a positive experience, such as being walked when you reach your destination

-Feed them with plenty of time left before you travel- Take regular breaks on long journeys and make fresh water available- If possible encourage your dog(s) to look out the front or rear window, this will allow them to fix on a distant object (such as the horizon) and should reduce feelings of nausea- Allow fresh air into the car

The British Crime Survey places us with having 173,000 scheme coordinators covering approximately 3.8 million households. Several guests joined members for a loud and lively 44th birthday party meeting in June, with delicious refreshments provided by the committee and entertainment by James Le Bec from St Ives. A grand raffle resulted in lots of lucky winners, and the competition for a rose filled a table with beautiful blooms from members' gardens. The next meeting will be our July 14th outing

As a specialist in this area I regularly get asked about the best way to pay for care, or whether an individual should be contributing or not. Clearly care has to be paid for unless someone (e.g. a family member) provides it without charge – but there is always a cost. A general rule being those deemed to be able to afford their own care should contribute and those below that threshold will have care provided for them, in reality matters are seldom that ‘black or white’. Bear in mind ‘He who pays the piper – calls the tune’, by this I mean that if the local authority pays for care – they may determine where and how the care is delivered. The care package determined by the assessor will need to be fulfilled, but the patient’s wishes will come second to budgetary considerations in most cases. Alternatively, if the patient has access to funding – then choices open up. The new anticipated cap on care costs is not effective yet, meanwhile the level over which someone ‘Self Funds’ is £23,250 in assets. After considering Estate preservation measures, Care Fee payment plans, Downsizing, State Benefits, Deferred payment arrangements and Equity Release – it is no wonder patients and their carers get confused – this is why professional help is vital. Sometimes simple things like an up to date valid Will and Power of Attorney can be helpful things to sort out. When a patient requires care the first step is to have a care assessment completed, this simply evaluates the situation and puts in place the level

of care required for that individual – regardless of cost (if the level of care is very intensive this could lead to an NHS Continuing Care assessment). A separate meeting being the financial assessment, the aim of which is to determine who will pay for that level of care. It is important for patients and their attorneys to understand which assets are included in an assessment and where there is more than one person (e.g. husband and wife) who actually owns what! Be very wary of ‘schemes’ that promise exemption from care cost assessments – if it is too good to be true it quite often is! There are many examples of ‘trusts’ and ‘gifts’ being unwound at the patient’s expense under Deprivation of Assets rules after paying good money to set them up. Not all financial advisers are qualified to advise in all these areas, a good independent starting point would be to view the Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA) web site: http://societyoflaterlifeadvisers.co.uk/ A typical adviser will provide an initial consultation at his or her expense, if all your questions are answered at that meeting – then you have done well at no cost to you – but remember their name if you come across someone in a similar dilemma. WHITTLESEY WI

June's meeting was a 1970s night with members “Dressed to Impress”. Prawn cocktails, black forest gateaux and other nibbles were served during the evening. A 70s quiz was also held and a group photo was taken during the evening. At the end of the evening, three members arrived back after having attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace to mark the centenary of the National WI. Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall; Sophie, Countess of Wessex; Princess Alexandra and the Duchess of

Gloucester hosted the event. It was attended by 8,000 WI members from all over the country. There were two members there from Whittlesey (Su Robotham and Ginny Lindsey), and Corrinne Wooding from Ladysmith WI. All three had a most enjoyable time. July's meeting is on Tuesday July 7th at 7:30pm, to be held at St. Andrew's Church Hall. The speaker is K Brammer and the subject is Artisan Cheeses. Do you look after your HEART?We are a small group of patients from the two town surgeries, aged between 65 and 80 years of age, who have all suffered a heart problem of some sort in the past. The group have been together since 2010, and meet every Monday morning at 11am at the Manor Leisure Centre to attend the HEALTHY HEARTS group. There are usually about ten of us who attend. For less than £5 per session, we are firstly monitored for our blood pressure, then checked for any change in medication, before doing a series of cardio-vascular exercises under qualified supervision. Do we enjoy it? You bet we do. Why? Because of the benefits we get from doing it. It is a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, and we enjoy each other’s company; you’re not put under any pressure.
