t’s November, and I can hardly believe that I’m saying that. Before we know it, Christmas will be upon us. I for one, am a big fan of all things festive; the smell of the cake baking and mince pies, the sound of carols and the decorations twinkling in the night. When it comes to Christmas, I am just one big kid. For me, the countdown always begins early as working in the publishing industry, we’re always a few months ahead. That’s why, this month, I’ve created a page for all things festive. Here you will find a selection of some of the Christmas activities planned for the next few weeks, but you can also find many more festive dates in our events guide pages. Be sure to support some of the events, or as many as you can, because without your support, they might not happen next year! An important note to mention this month, is the Kings Dyke Consultation, which you can find out more about on our centre pages. Included in this month’s magazine is a questionnaire and freepost envelope. I urge you all to complete these and have your say; none of us can forget the awful traffic congestion we’ve faced the last few years due to flooding, so it’s essential that something is done. Whittlesey isn’t getting any smaller, and more people equals more traffic. This month also sees the Remembrance Parade on the 9th. Full details can be found on page 8. Plus we also have firework advice for our pets on page 74, Whittlesey Festival arts competition results on page 12 and the Whittlesey and District Lions Christmas Float routes on page 66. Finally please do support our Whittlesey Fashion and Living Festival on 30th of November. Held once again at the Manor Centre, this craft and fashion fair was a huge success last year. Entrance is free and there’s plenty to entertain the whole family, We’ll be there too, so do come along and say hello! More informaton about this can be found on page 37. Have a lovely November, and we’ll see you next month for the start of the Chrsitmas countdown!

o you love the Christmas displays of flashing lights and singing Santas? We are fortunate to have lots of wonderful displays in and around Whittlesey, including Robert Dempsey’s home at 122 Duncombes Road in Turves. For the past couple of years he has been building up a large Christmas lights display at his property, and this year will be doubling his festive scene at his two-acre plot. The display will be so impressive, that he has decided to register to collect money for Cancer Research UK. There is room for visitors to park at the rear of the property, and there will be signs visible to help direct. The display will be switched on the 24th of November.

| Community newsWhittlesey Festival Schools Art Competition

The Whittlesey Festival held this year on Sunday 07 September was once again a resounding success with thousands of people enjoying the variety of activities and displays on offer throughout the day. One of the regular highlights of the Festival is the Schools Art Exhibition and this year was no exception. Students and children from local schools Park Lane, Alderman Jacobs, New Road, Coates, and Sir Harry Smith Community College had their work on display at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street for visitors, family and friends to enjoy. Marija Lysak who organised the competition

on behalf of the Festival said ‘having the schools involved is such an exciting and important aspect of the Festival. It’s a fantastic opportunity for others to appreciate the creative talents of the young people we have in the community. There was such an interesting variety of themes and techniques used and many of those who entered had worked really hard. Comments from visitors included ‘brilliant work, very creative, full of imagination, Well done !” , “lovely exhibition, very talented children we have” and from a proud parent: “Excellent artwork , my George is very proud to see his work on display”.

Cllr Dave Mason

After a glorious summer and a mild September Autumn is now with us with a vengeance. The nights are drawing in rapidly and it is dark when most of us wake up in the morning. The leaves are dropping off the trees aided by the strong and at times bitter winds and the air temperature is decreasing day by day. To many this season of Autumn holds its own attractions with the changing colours of our trees and hedgerows but to others Autumn is the foreboding of harsh days ahead and Winter is anticipated with a certain amount of trepidation. It is at this time that we as a greater community should be recognising that there are many potentially vulnerable people in our midst and our thoughts need to turn to how we can be of assistance to our neighbours many of whom may be old, infirmed, unable to make regular trips to the shops or simply are lonely being effectively imprisoned in their own homes for days on end particularly during periods of extreme weather. Do you know of someone like that in your street or village? Last October the death was announced of Cllr. Mac Cotterell a man who had dedicated fifty years to the Fenland District Council in many capacities including that of Chairman. One of his greatest achievements as a councillor was to set up the Golden Age project, a nationally recognised scheme that has provided advice and practical help to many thousands of older people throughout the district. Mac Cotterell’s legacy lives on in the form of a dedicated Golden Age Team committed to improving services and information for the over 60s in Fenland. This team brings a range of services to Fenland’s villages, through Golden Age Fairs regularly visiting the market towns and villages with Golden Age Events recently being successfully held in Coates and Doddington They also work in partnership with a number of Golden Age Partner Organisations who are dedicated to providing services and information to the over 60s. Such advice can be in the form of keeping warm on a limited budget, helping people to claim benefits to which they are entitled but may not be aware of and generally informing them of services in the area to assist them through the dark days of winter in particular. The next Golden Age Fair comes to St Andrews Hall on Monday 17 November 2014 from 10am until 1pm and I would hope to see as many of you as possible on that day. Many of the Whittlesey Town Council will be there to offer advice and support along with Fenland District Council representatives and if he has the time in his busy schedule our local MP, Steve Barclay. One of my nominated charities last year was an organisation called Community Navigators who operate under the Care Network banner. This particular

organisation is available to elderly citizens who are perhaps unsure where to turn in moments of need and Community Navigators are indeed regarded as an essential signposting agency. Advice on benefits, assistance with transport, medical care at home including mobility aids, assistance with shopping and simple household tasks or even just someone to talk to are all valuable services that are provided. Unfortunately the work of this organisation is for the most part unknown but should you wish to contact a representative for any purpose I would recommend that you visit Whittlesey Library on Wednesday mornings where Mrs Janet Clark holds a regular surgery or telephone 09154 212100 for advice. Another element of care in the community has been the launch two months ago of Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid and I would like to thank all those who have come forward with offers of support in so many ways. The Whittlesey Town Council have financed food storage cabinets that are housed in the Christian Church in Broad Street and also provided an allotment in New Road for educational purposes. A further grant from the council will facilitate free basic cookery lessons, details of which are to be announced shortly in conjunction with a public meeting to be arranged at the Christian Church. The four food stores in Whittlesey Nisa in Broad Street and Victory Avenue, Heron in High Causeway and Co-op in Blunts Lane have all been approached for assistance and information on the scheme has been supplied to various doctors surgeries, social services and other relevant agencies. Churches throughout the town have supported the appeal through recent harvest festivals and I have many other kind offers of assistance from individuals for which I am very grateful. The next crucial stage is sourcing families who can make use of our facilities either by learning how to grow vegetables or cook to basic recipes to increase nutritional value to their families. Other projects will follow on in due course but in the meantime a supply of dried or canned food is available in modest quantities for anyone in Whittlesey or the surrounding villages. If you wish to learn more please contact me in confidence at the Town Council Offices on 01733 351296 or Brian Smithyman at Whittlesey Christian Church on 01733 752093.

Ingredients:2 Pounds Lean Stewing Beef,

Small White Onion5 large Mushrooms

400 ml Good Quality Beef StockGood Splash of Dry White Wine

Tbsp Worcester SauceTbsp Tomato Puree

1 or 2 cloves of GarlicFlour

200ml Sour Cream

3. In a bowl, mix together the beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, tomato puree and wine4. Pour the sauce over the meat, Cover and

cook on low for 6-8 hours.5. Before service, turn the heat to high, add 2-3 tbsp of flour to 4-5 tbsp of water and mix until

Winter has arrived, and what better a time to

bring out the slow cooker. This is my favourite time

of year for being creative in the kitchen, and there is nothing more satisfying

WHITTLESEY WIDuring September some of the members went on an outing to Deene Park near Corby, stopping off at Fineshades Woods on the way.The Manor House at Deene Park is celebrating being in the Brudenell family for 500 years. It was a beautiful day so members enjoyed the extensive grounds and gardens, the tour of the House and a cream tea in the Old Kitchen. At October’s meeting Susan Stevens gave an informative talk about why she started her Handmade Chocolate business. There were lots of tasty chocolates to try and being made with natural ingredients and without additives they are suitable for diabetics and people with Coeliac disease. The next meeting is the Annual Meeting and is on Tueday 4th November at 7-30pm at St Andrew’s Church Hall. Contact Ginny tel 01733 205148.

Proudly in association with Wright's of Whittlesey

hittlesea is a Town in the State of Victoria, 40km (25 miles) North East of Melbourne, its local government area being the City of Whittlesea. Robert Mason surveyed the existing Toorourrong village reserve in 1853 and he chose the name of Whittlesea probably because he assisted in the survey of the drainage of Whittlesey Mere in 1851, the marshes which characterised this Australian area could have reminded him of it. The Town had three buildings of worship. The Presbyterian church erected in 1863, the Anglican church of Christ Church erected in 1865 and the Methodist Church erected in 1870. A 208lb (94kg) bell was hung in the belfry of Christ Church but the weight proved to be too much for the structure and in 1909 it was hung beside the Church. An affinity was established in 1993 with our own St. Andrew’s Church and Christ Church when the Rev. Ian Oats came here and presented the church with a banner and periodic visits have been made in both directions ever since. The Church is remembered in the service on the last Sunday in January being nearest to Australia Day, the 26th January. The bond between the two towns was initially established during the dark days of rationing after the end of World War 2. The residents of Whittlesea sent food parcels to the families of our frontline returning soldiers. Then a chance to repay this generosity came on the 7th February 2009 when on “Black Saturday” horrendous bush fires devastated the area. Whittlesea acted as a focal point for fire fighting and relief efforts. The Mayor, Cllr. Steve Garratt launched an appeal and the Council together with other Town organisations forwarded over £10,000 to Mary Lallios their Town Mayor. The gift was recognised by presenting a key to the City of Whittlesea to this Town and it is on display in the Museum in Market Street. The Town of Kingslake, on a few miles from Whittlesea, was completely destroyed by the fires and 47 lives were lost. The church of St. Peter’s was one of the buildings razed to the ground. Mr Roger Brown, a frequent visitor arranged a cycle ride from Melbourne to Whittlesea Station (both in Cambridgeshire!) and raised some £3000 which

WWhittlesea Australia, our connection

went towards the sewage disposal of toilet facilities to the churches temporary buildings. This church has now been rebuilt and opened on the 26th March 2014. The Town of Whittlesea itself has a population of 4826 according to the 2011 census. Like us it has a volunteer fire brigade and ambulance station, a number of local attractions and many sports facilities. It also has a limited opening hours police station (sound familiar?). The railway station opened in 1889 to serve a large logging trade taking timber from Kingslake to Melbourne for milling and there were several public houses to accommodate the temporary workers in the timber industry. The line closed in 1969. A new form of transport is now available for passengers as a private airport opened in 1960 to provide tourist and charter flights to and from the area.

In this centenary year we should stand still and take stock of the world in which we live and the gratitude we owe to those who have given so much to defend our freedom. We also acknowledge those who continue to protect what we enjoy in our country. There are three ‘Rs’ which apply at this time.

Remembrance - Respect - Reconciliation. We remember our history. We seek to understand the need for and experience of War. We recall the sacrifices of many, both on the battlefield and at home. We remember the peace that was achieved. We respect the people involved in those years of wars, members of our own families and local communities. We stand before our memorials and those lists of names speak of so much. Let your imagination run free.We seek reconciliation in our time. We work to understand other people and seek unity. We maintain peaceful lives and look to promote this gift. Peace is the gift received from those who gave of their lives. We should treasure this gift in their memory. The Kohima Epitaph: ‘When you go home tell them of us and say,for your tomorrow we gave our today.’

God bless you all.Nigel and Gill

2014 – one hundred years since the outbreak of the First World War

Anglers in the Whittlesey area have been blessed with a wide variety of waters to fish, the fenland drains have been very popular with big matches taking place on the likes of the Twenty Foot Drain, Glassmore Bank and Cock bank to name but a few. Not far away is the Old Nene at Benwick and March both renowned fishing

venues. In more recent times Decoy Lakes on the outskirts of Whittlesey, Kingsland Fishery and more recently Float Fish Farm have all made a massive impact as anglers switch to stillwaters. East Delph Lakes was always a big favourite for local anglers although over the past couple of years for several reasons anglers have drifted away. That should all change though as new owner James Mackay has big plans for the fishery and already the venue has been fishing

Nigel (203676) and Gill (202563) | A word from - Revd. Nigel and Revd. Gill

| Fishing news by Ken Wadewell with quite a few big fish being taken. The lakes are stocked with a variety of species, but anglers can expect predominantly carp between 8 and 18lb with the occasional 20lb plus fish with large bags of multiple double figure carp are common place. As the lakes are under new ownership the exact numbers of big fish present are still unknown, there is a fishery management plan in place that over the next two years should see the numbers of twenty pound plus carp increase in one of the lakes to at least 85 fish. The current stocking levels make the fishery a perfect winter runs water.

After September’s excellent article about our Whittlesey Recycling Centre by Sue Evans, Whittlesey Town council’s clerk, we were informed that all nine recycling centres across Cambridgeshire are under review! An opportunity for the public to make their comments was publicised as best as possible given the time restraints (this closed September 26th).The potential by the County Council to close one or more of these sites is highly likely. You will see from the photograph taken in 2010, when our Recycling Centre was threatened with closure, some of the effects of dumping and fly-tipping of rubbish just along New Road where the recycling centre is situated. On that occasion, the County Council decided to invest several hundred thousands of pounds to refurbish the site. We at Street Pride, found vast amounts of litter and rubbish every week when we cleared the

area for three weeks whilst the refurbishment was carried out. Cambs County council state that closing recycling centres has no effect on fly-tipping or more littering! I, and we, challenge this argument. I know, having spoken to County Councillor Ralph Butcher, that he is making as best case possible to try and keep our recycling centres open – we hope that his efforts do not fall on deaf ears! The case to maybe curtail the opening hours or days open could be an option – however my investigations prove that the savings the council are looking for would probably not be achieved. We will certaining be keeping a very close watch on the developments of the review.

We were pleased to welcome some new members and guests to the October meeting and we all enjoyed learning about the wonderful work of the Donkey Sanctuary. The next meeting will be on Tuesday 11th November at 7.30pm in St Andrew's Hall as usual and Fishy Things Ceramics will be showing us various ornamental ceramic items some of which are made by them. Although they have a curious name I don't

think they will be bringing many fish. The members competition on the night however is for a fish ornament. We are looking forward to supporting the Fashion & Living Festival at the Manor Leisure Centre on Sunday 30th November where we will have a stall so come along and say hello. Get in touch...... Brian Smithyman (Pastor of Whittlesey Christian Church, Broad Street) Church Office: 01733 752093 Brian’s Mobile: 07976 957793 Email: [email protected] Church Website: www.whittlesey.cc

Harold Bredesden recounts a true story about a group of scientists who decided to develop a fish that could live outside of water. They selected some healthy Red Herrings and began cross-breeding, and changing their hormones and chromosome’s until thy finally had a fish that could exist out of water. Then they feared that this new fish may actually retain a secret desire for water. So they re-programed all the fishes reflexes, until they had a fish which would rather die than get wet. Even humidity apparently affected it. Proud of their achievements they took the fish on tour. Everything went well until - quite by accident - the fish fell into a tank and immediately sank to the bottom with its eyes and gills shut tight, afraid to move or breathe. Yet, breathe it had to in order to survive. So, tentatively at first, the fish filled its gills, its eyes bulged and it breathed again, this time flicking its fins. And …… would you believe it, on the third intake the fish wriggled with delight then started to swim - The tour was over - The costly experiment had failed. Well, you might be asking, what’s this got to do with an editorial on Church Life? Everything really. At the time of writing we are half way through a terrific Alpha course for the adults and a Youth Alpha for the teenagers, and because of our team of imaginative communicators, the feedback is already terrific.

It’s not unusual for people who meet me, or come to the church for first time, to tell me that they don’t actually believe in God, and they’ve only come to the meeting because a friend invited them, or out of curiosity: is the singing and warmth of welcome all they’ve heard it to be? Though they only intended on coming once, some are still here. You see, as humans we all have a space in us that really can only be filled by God. No matter how much society, or life, tries to re-program us to do without God, all it takes is for us to find ourselves in a place where we experience the real presence and love of God. Ok, like the fish, we may wriggle and try to deny what we feel. But, take another breath, and like the fish in the tank, we discover a new and fantastic life. Isn’t it time you got your feet wet and came long one Sunday morning at 10.45?

Have You Discovered It Yet? | A word from Brian Smithyman

| Policing your area by Paul Harris, Whittlesey Geographic SergeantThe local policing team and detective constables have continue to link together crimes for theft of motor vehicle badges in Whittlesey. All suspects have been arrested and we are looking to resolve over forty crimes that occurred in the town in quite a short space of time. Since the arrests have been made, no further crimes of this nature have occurred. In addition to this good work we have had an excellent result over an investigation that was led by a member of our local policing team here in Whittlesey. This was for a case of dangerous driving that took place on the North Bank, back in March 2014. The evidence gathered clearly showed it was a miracle no one was injured or killed. The person concerned pleaded guilty this month and has received a prison sentence. This piece of work underlines how we approach incidents of this nature and the time we invest to highlight it. Driving this way cannot be tolerated due to the risk it places on others. Another person is also currently on remand in Prison again after some good police work when an individual, again driving dangerously, gave false details to police. The officer at the scene showed

great investigation skills and identified the person. As a result the person concerned has been remanded in custody to deter their continued re-offending. In response to local concerns raised at the schools over strangers approaching children. We have adopted a high visible patrol plan to help make people feel safe at peak times. We will continue to work with all the schools until we are satisfied that the risk has declined. If your child or anyone you know reports any such matters to you please do make us aware. Do not rely on the fact that others have already done it. We would much rather have double the reports than none at all. Like everything information is always key. Thank you to all those that have helped us on this matter thus far. We are always here to listen to any concerns you have and will answer as best we can. Finally we are busy planning the up and coming patrols and resourcing plans for Halloween, Fireworks night, and Remembrance Parade. We look forward to seeing you all over the next few months in the run up to Christmas, Yes I said it Christmas is back!!!!!

eaves are falling rapidly now and wind and rain are on the increase. If you have a greenhouse move tender plants into it to protect from frost, gales and freezing rains. If you don’t have a greenhouse, group pots together and wrap with fleece to protect the plant.

Garden Jobs for NovemberYou can maintain interest in the garden by digging out new beds and borders and replacing plants that have succumbed to the season. There are a few hardy little souls that will flourish at this time of the year such as cyclamen, pansies, violas and primroses.Remember winter can be a tough time for birds in terms of water and food, so keep supplies well topped up.

• Continue to cut down fading herbaceous perennials. - Cuttings can be added to the compost heap. It’s also still a good time to lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials.• Lift and store dahlias, cannas and tuberous bedding begonias that have been hit by the first frosts. - Store in a dry, frost free dark place in a layer of sawdust. Check occasionally over winter to ensure they are still dry and rot free. Remove any that look suspicious to prevent the risk of further infection.• Raise patio containers onto feet to avoid them sitting in the winter wet. - Large tubs that are at risk of cracking in the frost should be covered with bubble wrap, hessian or fleece to insulate them over the winter.• Clear up fallen leaves - especially from lawns, ponds and beds. - Tidy up leaves from around borders. They can be added to the compost heap, or placed in separate bins to make leafmould. Leafmould makes an excellent soil improver.• Plant roses. - Avoid planting in areas where roses were previously growing to prevent disease.• Continue to rake fallen leaves from the lawn. - If left they will block out light and moisture from the grass encouraging disease.• Treat wooden structures. - Wooden items such as benches, fences or pergolas will all benefit from treatment with a good quality preservative to protect from the worst that winter can throw at them.

Interesting articles to help you understand your body better.

Active living vs exercise

Contact DetailsAddress: Grosvenor House, Grosvenor Road, Whittlesey PE7 1AQ;

T : 01733 785214, W: www.whittlesey-osteopaths.com, E: [email protected]

In this months article we move away from the nitty gritty of how our bodies work and instead look at the meaning of the word exercise. To some, exercise is a word filled with trepidation as we are continuously bombarded with people, companies, health professionals and the media telling us to exercise. To others, exercise is something exciting , something that their day is planned around. Whichever camp you fall into we hope this article will get you thinking.Firstly what does exercise do? It simply challenges our body systems. When exercising we are challenging the vascular system (blood flow), the nervous system (co-ordination), the respiratory system (breathing) and the hormomal system (endorphins). Why is this important? To answer this, let’s consider how are bodies works. We have a range of functioning levels, e.g. our system is in a different state when we a sleep, at work, being active, eating, etc. Each state requires a different set of parameters, I.e. Our oxygen concentration in our blood will be different when we are sleeping to when we are at work as will our hormonal balance, etc. Thus we go through different states in our daily live dependent on what we are doing. Our system needs to be able to respond and adapt to these changing states and in some cases rapidly. Exercise forces our system to adapt quickly and thus maintains our systems ability to adapt. It also builds a greater range of adaption. I.e. If our hearts are stronger and our body more coordinated then we have more options in the event of let’s take an extreme example of escaping a fire in our home. We could climb out the upstairs window, quickly run through the hot, low oxygen filled hallway to safety or dangle the bed sheets from the window and after anchoring it climb down. If we did not have any fitness then climbing out would be unattainable and so we would be felt with the only option of running throught the hall way. Whether we can run 1mile in 5mins or 5mins 30sec (I.e. our performance during exercise) is not a life benefit, rather it is an ego benefit. For life exercise gives us options and the ability to adapt.Has exercise always existed? Not in the convectional sense. 200years ago there were no gyms or exercise classes. Rather people had active lives which incorporated exercise. They played games outside to entertain themselves (which developed into sports) and they lifted and moved (I.e. ran, walked, climbed) as part of their daily live It is only in the modern world, where the physicality of life has been removed that we need to exercise to give ourselves that adaptation ability. Do we need to exercise? How many people in a physically demanding job exercise as well? In my experience not many. And that is exactly the point, if you are physical in your daily life then you are changing your levels and improving your adaptability and thus exercise has little additional value. Equally, if you are active in your live, then the need for exercise becomes less. There is a buzz word currently circulating called active living. Just being active can give you the adaptability you need.Exercise vs active living which is better? It does not matter, it depends on your circumstance and your mind set. If you have a sedentary job and like your creature comforts then exercising will give you that adaptability. However if you have a physical job and prefer to use your body to do things (e.g. Washing up by hand as opposed a dish washer, cycling as opposed to driving), then exercise will give you little extra benefit. As long as you do at least one it make no odds whether you are active living or exercising. Take care and we wish you an enjoyable and happy month.

Down along Broad Street, you might have noticed a glamorous new salon has opened its doors. TwentyNine replaces a previous salon in the heart of Whittlesey, and uses quality unique professional brands and high end products. They also retail luxury homecare products which are exclusive to the salon. “I bought the salon from a lady who had been trading for the last 20 years,” explained Victoria, “and I saw the potential in its great location, with a lovely town and friendly people.” Undaunted by the businesses need for a makeover, and with the support of loyal existing clientele, Victoria hand painted, wallpapered and laid the floor. Whilst her budget was tight, her enthusiasm wasn’t. “I wanted customers visiting the salon to have an experience where they feel pampered in beautiful and comfortable surroundings, and feel like it’s a treat. We offer customers a range

of speciality teas and coffee served in cup and saucers!” And what about the future? As the refurbishment has been such a hit and with the addition of Hannah Meen-Ward, a part time experienced stylist, the next stage for Victoria is to expand the team and continue bringing the latest on-trend techniques in colouring and cutting to the salon. Open Monday (by appointment only), and Tuesday to Saturday with a late opening on Thursday and Fridays by appointments only, TwentyNine believes in the ethos of not rushing clients. Instead the stylists focus on quality and high standards first and foremost.

Rupert Wyatt’s 2011 reboot of the Planet of the Apes Franchise, Rise, was a hugely well-received film of the last few years. A thrilling action film with an intelligent narrative and plenty of heart, it was an almost totally unexpected and very pleasant surprise. For Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, director Matt Reeves continues the story where Wyatt left off, and Reeves has satisfyingly made a sequel of such impressive quality that is at least the equal of its predecessor and in many aspects surpasses it. The story takes place a decade since Caesar led his fellow apes to begin a new life away from captivity in the forests beyond San Francisco. The group has expanded and thrived, and constructed a sort of ape city among the trees. Here, Caesar has continued to command the loyalty of his fellow simians and remains chief,

while he now also has a young family of his own to protect. Back in San Francisco, many years have now passed since a deadly virus born from the gaseous form of the drug ALZ-113 (referred

The apes and humans have thus been segregated until a chance meeting with a small band of human explorers reunites them once more, bringing back some old memories for Caesar while igniting tensions between the two groups that threatens to boil over into all-out war and a battle for evolutionary superiority. The film plays on the natural mistrust that the apes have of the humans, and vice versa. Rent this DVD this month, and you won’t be disappointed!

By now you will have seen adverts featuring prominent personalities indicating that a new pension initiative is beginning to take effect. If you employ anyone – you need to have a compliant scheme with the correct enrolment procedure in place by the time the Pensions Regulator expects you to be ready. If you do not know you’re staging date or whether you have all the correct procedures in place – your first port of call might be the website: http://www.thepen-sionsregulator.gov.uk/ As an employee you should know that a scheme must be provided for you and that you will be automatically enrolled into it. You do have the option to opt out – but why would you when in effect you’ll be giving up a wage increase? When the entire plan is fully operational 8% of your qualifying earnings will be paid in to a pen-sion scheme. Your employer will contribute 3%, you will contribute 4% and the tax man adds a further 1% – therefore in return for your 4% you get double the amount invested for the future – unless your circumstances are such that any reduction of income would cause hardship – this is too good to miss. Many employers will operate the scheme set up by the government: National Employment Savings Trust (N.E.S.T.) because it is simple and

complies with legislation, other employers that are looking to attract and retain staff may seek out a more comprehensive arrangement. Many Independent Financial Advisers help employers by setting up schemes that are both compliant and offer additional benefits – if this is of inter-est please contact me for further information. If you are an employee wondering how this new arrangement will fit in with any existing arrange-ments, I will be pleased to advise you. An initial consultation can be arranged at no cost to you. It is important for employers to note that the Pensions Regulator has wide reaching powers. You need to assess your workforce so that you know who needs to be automatically enrolled and why. You also need a robust payroll sys-tem plus evidence of your communications and contribution calculations. Failure to comply varies from a warning letter to fixed penalty notices of £400 and escalating penalty notices £50-£10,000 daily* My message is on two levels, as an employer be prepared, as an employee be aware and if you are struggling to make sense of it – ask a qualified specialist.

*The pensions Regulator DM 2777032 v4: The value of an investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back as much as you put in.

If you employ anyone - you need to understand this. If you are an employee - you need to understand this.

Inheritance update

| Legal Corner by Georgina Hawkes, Dack Pearson Solicitors

Last month I told you making a Will won’t kill you. From October 1st this year the intestacy rules – dying without making a Will – have changed. A new Act came into force known as The Inheritance and Trustees Powers Act 2014 or ITPA 2014 which is less difficult.

If you pass away leaving a spouse/civil partner, parents and/or siblings but no children, your spouse or civil partner will inherit all of your estate. Your parents and/or siblings will now not receive anything.

In the event that you die and leave a spouse/civil partner and children, your spouse/civil partner will receive the first £250,000, your personal items – often referred to as chattels – and half of the remaining estate. Your

children will inherit the other half of the remaining estate when they reach 18 years of age.

However, if you have a partner, but are not married, your partner will not inherit anything.

If you wish to discuss your options when making a will, please get in touch.

“I’m very excited about my website and I hope people will find it easy to use,” added Christine. But for anybody who struggles to use it, Christine is always available to help. “Customers should not hesitate to ring me if they want any help using it on 01733 350057.” With Christmas just around the corner, and many of us juggling jobs and family life, having a gift shop online that you browse at a convenient time, will certainly prove to be priceless. Gifts Galore now onlineSo many of us adored Gifts Galore on Blunts Lane, and like me, were saddened to see it close earlier this year. But that's not the end of the story, in fact Gifts Galore is still very much in operation. . . Over 17 years ago, Christine Nicholls opened the doors to Gifts Galore, and it quickly became a much-loved shop selling beautiful cards, ornaments, jewellery and wooden signs. The business thrived and Christine built up many loyal customers and friends. But when her own property required renovation work, she was unable to keep the Whittlesey gift shop open. In May this year, Christine closed the door to her shop for the last time, but she was far from ready to give up her business. Jump ahead a few months, and Gifts Galore is now a thriving online business, currently operating from a Facebook page and launching on the 1st of November, a brand new website: www.gifts-galore.net, with thanks to SG Computing for their hardwork. Here you can still purchase the lovely handmade wooden sentiment hearts and plaques, and the beautiful rhodium plated indulgence jewellery. “My aim is to give the people of Whittlesey, Eastrea, Coates and Turves a free, same day delivery service (whether home or work) if orders are placed before 11am,” explained Christine, “or they can collect from me at Eastrea and receive 10% discount off their order.” Items can still be viewed with prior arrangement, and Christine is also continuing her popular picture framing service, which offers no obligation quotes.

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Whittlesey, Eastrea & Coates areas and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Whittlesey professional artist James Green has just released a new 16 page brochure which showcases all of his stunning paintings. His landscapes are generally of the local area so well worth a look. Also in the brochure you will see his railway paintings which haverecently won him a place into the ‘Guild of Railway Artists’. His works are available as limited edition prints, greeting cards and drinks coasters all of which make perfect christmas gifts. Call James on 01733 203230 or 07786 995794 if you would like to receive a free copy.

Coffee & Cake a huge successPark Lane Primary & Nursery School welcomed parents and friends into school on Friday morning to be part of the World’s Biggest Coffee morning in order to raise money to support Macmillan Nurses. Staff had been busy baking and there was a wonderful array of cakes, pies and biscuits that Mary Berry would have been proud of! Parents were offered competitions to enter such as estimate the number of Hundreds and Thousands on the iced cake, a prize raffle as well as the chance to chat over a refreshing cup of tea or coffee. Sue Bradshaw, Year 6 teacher said “The school council representatives and teaching assistants hosted this successful event which has raised over £300 for this worthwhile charity. “We are extremely grateful to local businesses for their generous support of raffle prizes and we hope to host another such event next September”.

| Motoring news “TWIGGIES TIPS”Hello there, my name is Mark Twigg from MT Cars and MTC Subaru in Whittlesey. We thought it would be a nice idea to help you with purchasing a new/used car, maintaining your car or even simply staying safe in your current car. On the odd occasion we’ll also be reporting the latest news relating to cars.

Antifreeze is something that is often forgotten or is not given the credit it deserves. A con-tinuous squealing noise as soon as the engine is started is usually a sign the water pump is frozen (it’s the fan belt slipping on the pulley) the cylinder block could be frozen too. You need to turn the engine off and allow the engine to thaw out. If the vehicle overheats it’s a possible sign that the radiator could be frozen preventing the cool-ant from circulating, again stop straight away in order to prevent any serious damage. Generally antifreeze only costs a few pounds, however if you haven’t had your car serviced or you forget to add it, it could cost you hundreds of pounds in repairs. You need a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze in the cooling system for winter, this should give you protection down as far as -30. Tyres, we recommend that you have your tyres checked and really they ought to be at least 3mm and certainly no less than 2mm, so again why not make an appointment with our service depart-ment for us to check your vehicle thoroughly? We will go over your whole vehicle for you and report back with our findings.

Let’s make sure we all stay safe this winter!

We hope you found the last edition helpful, this time round we thought we would help you with the up and coming winter months and how to look after yourself and your vehicle. We recommend you gather a few items at the start of the winter season and keep them in your car – just in case. Below are items that should be in your emergency kit:gIce scraper and de-icergTorch and spare batteries – or a wind-up torchgWarm clothes and blankets – for you and all passengersgBootsgFirst aid kitgJump start cablesgFood and a warm drink in a flaskgShovelgReflective warning signgRoad atlasgSunglasses – the glare from the snow can be dazzlinggMobile phone charger

Most of these items we can arrange for you and help you put together a winter kit; it is also worth, before setting off on your journey, planning and checking it so as to avoid any problems.

Could Sports and Remedial massage help you?

Sports and Remedial massage can work well to relax, soften and stretch overused muscles from work, stress and sport. The benefit to muscles means that it can also help to increase joint flexibility and range of movement. Many people find massage therapy helps to reduce depression and anxiety; it can work very well to help relax you and help you to manage stress. Regular treatment can be beneficial for sports people to help their body recover from the pressures of sporting activities, it can help reduce recovery times between training sessions, reduce scar tissue from injury and help to reduce the risk of further injury.

We have daytime, evening and some weekend appointments available at 47-49 High Street, March. Call us on 01354 651200 or visit www.marchpodiatry.co.uk for more information.

Do you suffer from tired, overused, aching muscles? Do you spend long periods of time sitting at a desk or in the car?

Care Network Cambridgeshire needs volunteers -

there’s an opportunity to suit you!Care Network’s Help at Home is a service which provides volunteer help for people who have a crisis, are unwell at home or need help after a hospital discharge. Volunteers visit people and provide free short-term practical and emotional support with things like shopping and collecting prescriptions or just calling in to check someone is ok. In winter we see a big increase in referrals to the service as people are more likely to suffer from chest infections and falls. “It’s a great volunteering opportunity and very rewarding to see people returning to independ-ence,” said Hilary Johnys, Direct Services Manager. “You can fit it around your other work or social commitments. You just let us know your availability and we work around it. Most visits continue for 2-3 weeks and we have volunteers who are retired, working, (full or part time) studying, are unemployed or at home with a family.” Volunteers are police checked, trained and paid any out of pocket expenses. With winter approaching we are seeing a real

increase in demand for the service and are looking for volunteers in the March and Whittlesea areas. Please contact us on 01354 694413 or email [email protected] for more information.Help at Home is funded by Cambridgeshire Clinical Commissioning Group and The Big Lottery Reaching Communities in Hunts and Fens.

Make a difference with just a few hours a month!

Help at Home volunteers provide free short term practical and emotional help after a hospital stay, or during an illness or crisis at home.

Community Navigators are local volunteers who provide information to help older people access services and enjoyable activities.

Donation in memory of Jim CampbellPam Campbell and her sister Jackie Fryett present a cheque for £1,200 to Dr. Andrew Anderson of the Jenner Health Centre, Whittlesey. This money was raised by Pam and Jackie at a social evening at the Ivy Leaf Club in Whittlesey on 27th September which was attended by 172 friends and family. The money was raised in memory of Pam’s late husband James Campbell who passed away earlier this year after a long illness. They wanted to give a big thank you for the care provided by all the staff at Jenner Health Centre. The money will go towards providing equipment at the surgery to benefit all patients.

Red, White & Blue Day Raises Money for Armed Forces Charities The money raised will go to help three chari-ties; ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity and The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund to help with the tremendous work they all do to support the wider military family. Miss Becky Marshall, Class Teacher at New Road School and organizer of the fund-raising event said “as the world looks to commemorate the start of World War One we believe it is important for our pupils to have a good under-standing of the sacrifices servicemen and women make. Throughout the day the children completed a variety of art activities to show their respect and thanks for current and previous service personnel. These included creating a Van Gogh inspired mural of the poppy fields. They also learnt about the history of the poppy and completed their own poppies using various mediums”. New Road School is very proud to have taken part in Red, White and Blue Day and to have raised money for a very worthwhile cause. For more information about New Road Primary school visit www.newroadprimary.co.uk

Children at New Road School, Whittlesey were invited to come to school dressed in red white and blue, for a special fundraising day for the Armed Forces charities.

Firework Advice for Pet OwnersFireworks and Dogs:vIts best of you can take the dog for a long walk in the light of day before the fireworks start.vCreate for your dog a safe area, room or crate that you can make so your dog feels safe.vClose the curtains and put on a television or radio to help cover the sound of the fireworks.vAlthough its difficult try not to over reassure your pet, this some times can add to their stress. Instead try to continue as normal.vMake sure the area the dog is in is secure, when scared animals can try to run and if they escape the can get them selves lost. Ensuring your dog is microchipped and the details up to dat e will make reuniting you with your pet easier.vLook out for signs of stress, Panting, pacing, drooling, destructiveness, high heart rate faecal incontinence and aggression. Fireworks and Cats:vCats are more difficult to contain, so make sure your cat is indoors long before it gets dark, finding them at the last minute can be difficult, and once the fireworks start the cat may hide.vMake sure the cat flap is locked securely.vProvide the cat with a litter tray.vClose the curtains and put on a TV or a radio.vMake sure your cat has somewhere to hide, a box or a space under the bed, you can put the cats

bed or blanket there. vStress in cats can be: Climbing up high, trying to run away, soiling in the house not wanting to eat, aggression and hissing.Small Mammals:vMost rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets are kept outside, so the fireworks can upset them just as much as our indoor pets.vTry where possible to bring them inside, or in a shed or garage.vCover the hutch or run with something to muffle the sound and keep out the flashing lights.vProvide them with plenty of bedding to bury them selves in.vHide treats so they can forage and be distracted.vKeep handling your pets to a minimum. In all cases try not to leave your pets alone, and if they have been destructive, they should not be disciplined this will only worry them more. Before firework season starts its sensible to plan ahead, especially if you know your pets are going to be frightened. Here at the vets we have a wide range of products to help your pets cope with the firework season. If you want to pop into the practice or give us a call we can show you all our products and help you keep your pet happy this year.
