Welcome to our June edition...

Front cover by Gill Lawrence

Welcome to our June edition of “Discovering Whittlesea”. The weather is getting warmer and

there are lots of exciting events taking place this month.

In this issue, we have some great opportunities for you to become more involved in your local community. AJS is looking for some local School Governors. If you’ve always

fancied taking on a role to help shape your local primary school, then this could be the opportunity for you. Turn to page 24 for more information. We also have an update from Whittlesey’s U3A. You can join this exciting group if you are retired or no longer in full-time employment. Further details can be found on page 10

Finally, we’d like to wish you a lovely June, and don’t forget Father’s Day on June 21st!

| Community newsThe Hermitage Raise Funds for Poorly GranddaughterStaff, residents and visitors from The Hermitage in Whittlesey have helped raise over £1,101 for London Elizabeth, the granddaughter of a member of staff at the home, who is unwell. London Elizabeth recently turned two, and has been diagnosed with an acute form of leukaemia. She is undergoing chemotherapy treatment, which damaged her lungs, but a recent bone marrow transplant seems to be working. London would love to go to Disney Land one day when she is well enough, as she loves princesses and the film, Frozen. On hearing her story, staff at The Hermitage wanted to help her get a little bit closer to achieving the dream. Instead of giving Christmas cards to each other, staff donated money. They also had a t-shirt day (see picture), and raised money by holding a cupcake day. The staff even had Brendan, whose mother works at The Hermitage, donate his savings of £16.00. Here’s hoping London makes a speedy

recovery, and can fulfil her dreams of visiting Disney Land really soon. Pictured right: London Elizabeth enjoying cake.

Cuts in many services can leave people wondering where they can turn when they are going through difficult times. Yet Samaritans continues to do what it has done for the last sixty years – to promise that there will be someone on hand, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A service available for anyone in emotional distress. And that someone at the other end of the phone is a volunteer whose role is to do nothing more and nothing less than to listen. “I’m not an expert counsellor – none of us are – but we aim to help people look at their options rather than tell them what to do,” says Ian, who runs Peterborough Samaritans’ training

Could you be a good Samaritan?programme. While new recruits worry that they ‘won’t know what to say’, these fears are allayed through a ten-week course common to all Samaritans branches. Coming from all walks of life, the qualities that unite the volunteers are acceptance, understanding and empathy. “The power of such human contact is amazing” states Branch Director Dave, “and we are looking for new Samaritans to let us continue delivering this remarkable service”.

If you’d like to be there to listen, then you can attend the information mornings (held at 10am on the last Sunday of each month, apart from August and December, at 32 - 34 St John’s Street, Peterborough), or call John on: 07729 897135

Garden Jobs for Junemore frequently, when it’s hot and dry or windy. Regular feeding – once per week in the summer – will also help your basket plants thrive.l Mow lawns at least once a week. The lawn will be growing fast now and will continue to do so throughout the summer so a good weekly cut is essential to keep it looking neat and tidy.l Hoe off weeds.Dig out tough perennial weeds with a fork. If you’re treating them with a weed killer, remember to catch them at the start of flowering to get the best results.l Plant out summer bedding.June is a great month to plant summer bedding plants such as begonias, marigolds, petunias and lobelia. Before planting, give the plants a good soaking of water. If it’s a sunny day try to plant them in the late afternoon or early evening. Don’t forget to water well again after planting.l Stake tall or floppy plants.Tall growing plants such as delphiniums, lupins, poppies and climbers need a frame work or canes and string around them to help prevent wind damage.l Prune spring flowering shrubs.Cutting back spring flowering shrubs and perennials can encourage a fresh flush of foliage.

une 21st is the longest day of the year, and the extra light and warmth encourages the garden to put on a burst of growth. It’s a busy month again for gardeners with lots of planting, tidying, maintenance, weeding and pruning to be done.l Hoe borders regularly to keep on top of weeds.Annual and perennial weeds need removing to prevent them from spreading and seeding themselves. Bindweed can be especially invasive and should be removed as soon as it appears.l Pinch out side-shoots on tomatoes. This will direct the plant’s energy to the fruit growing on the main stem. A good tip for protecting against whitefly attack is to plant basil or marigolds close to your tomato plants.l Put summer hanging baskets and containers outside.Choosing a sunny spot for your hanging baskets and containers will ensure you get the best from them. | Community newsA NOTE FROM THE TOWN CLERK

Community news |

As a reminder to everyone, the Full Council Meeting is always the second Wednesday of the month and is held at Grosvenor House, Grosvenor Road, Whittlesey, commencing at 7.30pm. There is a public forum at every meeting and members of the public are welcome to attend. The Planning and Projects Meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of the month, with the Finance and Policy Meeting being held on the last Monday of the month. The agendas for all meetings are posted on the notice board outside Grosvenor House and on the Market Place and will shortly be posted on the council’s new website which is currently under construction.

ALLOTMENTSThe allotment site on New Road has flourished since the redevelopment in 2010 and for the first time in eight years, we do not have a waiting list

and have some available allotments, both full and half plots. The site also boasts a compostable toilet which was obtained by the ‘Whittlesey Allotment & Garden Society’ through grant-funding, along with a substantial amount of new hedging, again obtained through grant-funding. If you are interested in becoming an allotment holder, please contact me for further information. I can be contacted on 01733 351296 or email [email protected]. Alternatively pop into the office at Grosvenor House, Grosvenor Road, Whittlesey, PE7 1UL (opposite the new bus station).Sue Evans, Town Clerk

WHITTLESEY U3A UP AND RUNNING!!As I put pen to paper, our Inaugural Meeting has yet to take place (it’s scheduled for May 21st), but the magazine’s print deadline necessitates this. The Steering Committee have met to plan this meeting and are quietly confident of a good attendance, based on the fact that over 130 folk attended our original launch meeting! By the time you read this, Whittlesey U3A will be officially up and running! Our own website and Facebook page will follow shortly, where members can keep up to date with all that it has to offer them. Our sister town of Whittlesea in Victoria, Australia, has had its own thriving U3A since 2002 (it truly is an international organisation) and their secretary has sent a message of support with the best wishes of their membership, offering us any assistance we may require. If you are no longer in full-time employment and weren’t able to get to the meeting, you are still most welcome to join. In fact, you can join at any time throughout the year with a sliding scale of reduced subscriptions applicable. Please contact Trish Glazier, our membership secretary, on 01733 204048 or at [email protected] who will be very pleased to provide you with the necessary details. Members have access to a range of “Interest Groups” in which they may participate; we hope to have sufficient interest (and leaders)

to commence table tennis, walking, art class, singing, crafts, etc to name but a few. Your subscription also entitles you to attend regular monthly open meetings with refreshments and guest speakers, where you can find out ALL that is happening within the organisation. These will be held at Childers Club in Station Road on the third Thursday of each month, the open meeting in June being on June 18th at 2pm with Phillip Parker speaking on the ‘Natural History of the Whittlesey Brick-pits – The Jurassic to the Present Day’. Regular publications are also posted to you from the national U3A. If you read this piece and have questions to ask before making a decision on becoming a member, you are welcome to contact me at [email protected] and I shall be pleased to try to answer them.Tony Wright, Publicity & Communications Officer.

Lattersey Nature ReserveLattersey Nature Reserve originated as a quarry for brick clay and ballast for railway construction. When abandoned, the pits filled with water and plants and wildlife soon began to colonise the area. The reserve is an island of wildlife-rich habitat in a sea of intensively farmed arable fields, industrial land and housing. Lattersey is managed by the Wildlife Trust (www.wildlifebcn.org) for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire (BCN). With the help of a team of active volunteers, it has been enjoyed by the public since opening in 1986. By following the boardwalk, you can explore the wetland which hosts a variety of wildlife including water voles, water shrews and water-rail, along with a variety of invertebrates and wild flowers, including yellow flag iris, purple loosestrife and skullcap. The Trust maintains the areas of open grassland by cutting back encroaching scrub in the winter. Each year the grass is mown or grazed to encourage wildflowers such as orchids and vetches. A section of reedbed is cut each year to ensure fresh growth for different birds and insects to nest in and feed on. Willows are also removed from the reed bed to prevent it drying out. From time to time, trees are pruned or coppiced to allow more sunlight to penetrate and maintain variety of species. Small round holes in tree trunks are the telltale signs of the presence of feeding goat moth

caterpillars, which can grow up to 7cm long. Access to the reserve is via New Road, and the site has its own small car park. Dogs on leads are allowed.

• To find out more, please visit Friends of Lattersey Nature Reserve on facebook, and share your experience with others by posting photos and videos on this page. If you scroll down to the bottom of the facebook page, you can see a video of Lattersey’s nationally scarce water voles.

Proudly in association with Wrights of Whittlesey

ime has passed; the islands are settled by the Saxons, who now call themselves English. The land is known as Witelseya...the island of Witel. It is the Tenth Century and the local lord’s family, under the influence of their mother, have sold part of their holdings to the Bishop of Ely, Athelwold, who has given it to the newly rebuilt Abbey of Thorney. Not all the family were happy at this and one of them, Leofwine, was so angry that in a fit of rage at his mother’s actions, he murdered her! In the ensuing commotion he is brought to justice before the Church and forced to hand over the remainder of his lands to the Bishop in atonement. These lands Athelwold gives to the Abbey of Ely. Up to now the people of Witelseya have lived in small settlements dotted about the islands but the Abbeys are intent on treating their new possessions as business assets to maximise profits and organise the farming of the land. The Abbots of Thorney and Ely make their way to the old Lord’s manor house with their officials and decide what they will do....and this will prove to be the most momentous decision in our islands’ history, one that gives us what we have now, the town of Whittlesey. Everything about the town that we see today follows from that meeting. Let’s look at the aftermath through the eyes of the peasants who lived and farmed the land. We know roughly how many people there were; 23 families sold to Thorney Abbey, and 15 families given to Ely Abbey. Just under 40 families, about 200 men, women and children. They would have come from the scattered hamlets to gaze, with mixed feelings, at the sight of a long street, close to the river with two stone churches being built, one at each end of the street. Next to each church a great Manor house was under construction and the street itself had plots of land marked by palings lying north and south. Lanes were laid out, three on each side, the southern ones running down to the river and the northern ones leading to what had been small enclosed fields which had tilled and grazed their livestock on. This was now to be turned into one vast field which they would farm in strips under the supervision of officers they would themselves elect. On each of the plots,

TThe Saxon Age. Month 4.

the Abbot’s men were building cottages, one for each family. Each cottage was a longhouse, one end for the family and the other for their livestock. The 15 families who belonged to the Abbot of Ely were settled at the western end of the new village street next to the church dedicated to St Andrew, whilst the 23 belonging to the Abbot of Thorney were at the eastern end of what is now London Street, near the new church of St Mary. Each end of the street was wider than the middle part, so that a market could be held there, for which of course each Abbot could make a charge. It was all about money. It was all a far cry from the old days when a man could plough and graze, what seemed to him, his own fields, paying his Lord his dues but feeling he was his own master. To their children, playing and growing up in the new, noisy and bustling street with the excitement of the markets, it would become normality. There was much that was beneficial about being in one place, learning to share all the tasks of the farming year together. It made for people developing a true sense of community, looking out for each other. From these humble beginnings would come the village guilds to which folk would make small weekly contributions in the knowledge that, should they fall ill or suffer hardship, they could receive assistance. Over much, though not all, of England the story of Whittlesey was being repeated as communities were formed, laying the seeds of what would become the nation we know today.

WHITTLESEY STREET PRIDE VOLUNTEER GROUP40,000kgs Removed and Still Counting

| StreetPride News

If you wish to contact Fred Mills, Chairman his details are:T: 01733 202874E: [email protected] Gerstner. Vice Chair, Whittlesey Street Pride GroupT: 01733 208590E: [email protected]

Whittlesea Street Pride have been going for eight years… how time flies when we are all having fun! Our fantastic group of volunteers have collected and removed from the roads, streets and verges of our town and villages, an incredible 40000 kgs of rubbish - that’s over 40 tonnes in old terms, a vast amount in volume. We always hope to find less; often this is not the case, but we are winning, and most of what we have removed would have remained in our environment. Our thanks to our past and present, highly dedicated group. Our AGM was held on April 15th, and our structure, constitution and insurance has been brought up to date. We now have a slightly enlarged management committee with Mr Fred Mills of Kings Delph, who has kindly agreed to take on the role of Chairman for the coming year. Outgoing Chairman, Roy Gerstner, becomes Vice Chairman, allowing him to concentrate on his other community groups. As most of our readers know, the group go out on organised events every two weeks. Recently we held a joint event (which has been going for the past four years) with the Geo-Coaching Group. Thirty-six turned up, with the furthest coming from Dusseldorf in Germany. We collected another 200kgs/20

bags of rubbish from around the industrial estate in Whittlesey. One of the group members found an unsigned credit card, and Tracy Rowell their organiser, found the owner via Facebook very quickly. The card and owner were re-united in less than an hour. We welcome people from all local areas, and really need a few more people to help us from Coates or Turves. Would you be interested? Would you like to make a difference to our area? Why not come along for some gentle exercise and fresh air, and meet some new friends? You can find our future events at: https://whittleseastreetpride.wordpress.comor just ‘Google’ Whittlesea Street Pride.

Whittlesey Conservative Councillors wish to extend their sincere thanks to everyone that supported them to ensure their election on Thursday 7 May at the County, District and Town Council Elections. All residents can be assured that we will do our

best for our Town and Villages. Councillors: Ralph Butcher, Alex Miscandlon and Bob Wicks, David Mason and Julie Windle, Dee Laws and Ray Whitwell, Steve Garratt and Alan Bristow, Kay Mayor, Chris Boden, Martin Curtis, Rita Jolley and Eamonn Dorling.

have an integral garage. It’s a fact that most garages become junk repositories as most are too small these days for larger modern cars.

Alderman Jacobs Primary School is a thriving school, serving the children and families of Whittlesey and surrounding villages. They are now recruiting Community School Governors! With around 570 children, the school has 21 classrooms with fewer than 30 children in a class. The children benefit from a well-resourced school and generous grounds allowing for extended opportunities. An amount of responsibility for leading the school and ensuring its success, is assigned to the Governing Body - a voluntary group of parents, staff and community governors. Each bring energy, ideas and life experience to support the organisation and management of the school. Without the need for formal qualifications, school governance provides opportunities to develop new skills, and practise existing ones with plenty of training opportunities. As a School Governor you will, collectively, set the future direction for the school and manage the budget. Decisions will be made on matters including targets, improvement/development plans, policies and staffing structure. There is a requirement for reviewing, overseeing and

reporting. You will support the head teacher, asking questions and giving advice. “As my daughters, and now my granddaughters, attend the school, I wanted to put something back because my family has been well served by this school,” explained one governor, Eamonn Dorling. “My experience has prepared me to contribute in a positive way.” Succesful candidates will need to commit time to the role, attending one full Governing Body meeting each term, as well as serving on at least one sub-committee and making visits during school hours. Laura Holland, Chair of AJS Governing Body added: “I became a Community Governor before my children reached school age, as I have always been passionate about children’s learning and development. Primary school plays a huge part in people’s lives and I wanted to support the local school.” If you want an interesting, challenging and rewarding opportunity, please contact:Clerk to the Governing Body, [email protected], 01733 202403.

Get in touch...... Brian Smithyman (Pastor of Whittlesey Christian Church, Broad Street) Church Office: 01733 752093 Brian’s Mobile: 07976 957793 Email: [email protected] Church Website: www.whittlesey.cc

Election times always highlight the need to make choices, and then having to live with those choices. Whilst listening to the usual myriad of promises flowing from politicians’ lips and watching their body language as I recalled their track record on previous promises, something happened which caused me to specifically think about the ‘choices we make, over which we have more personal and direct control.’ The choice to ignore problems in the hope that they will suddenly go away; or maybe the choice to refuse to allow fear or pride to stop us from doing what deep inside we know is right. Many years ago, someone I knew wrote a thought-provoking song called ‘The Autumn Years’. A few lines in it, said, ‘The autumn years are soon upon us, life’s fleeting day is almost gone, we think of all the many changes we could have made, but our time has gone.’ Looking back over my life, and the many years spent in the ministry, I see choices I’ve made which have brought me enormous joy; but I also recall choices which clearly turned out to be wrong. People I chose to trust who ended up causing me deep hurt. Courses of action I chose to take when my life was under pressure, which I later learned to regret. I then recalled someone’s very wise reply to a question being asked concerning a close friend of his - were the rumours true? - Looking at the person enquiring,

they simply replied, ‘When someone knows how to repent, God knows how to forgive and forget’. Despite being pressured to be more specific, he repeated his first statement, because it’s true. Just as right choices have the potential to fill us with joy and lift our spirit, so the consequences of wrong choices can leave us with an overwhelming fear of failure and hopelessness. As a minister, one of my real joys is remembering the many people who have crossed my path over the years: Some who were so broken due to having made wrong choices; yet, through faith in God, honesty with themselves, and help from the family of God, they have seen their lives turned around. We owe it to ourselves to take care over the choices we make, but we also owe it to ourselves to know that a wrong choice does not have to mean a ruined life. If we are willing to acknowledge we got it wrong, then things can change.

The Challenge Of Choices | A word from Brian Smithyman

| Policing your area by Paul Harris, Whittlesey Geographic SergeantAs summer approaches, we have seen some positive outcomes where hard work has been rewarded. The culprit for the theft from motor cars was sentenced and imprisoned, which was a great result. A serial shoplifter was also charged, and since then, no more thefts have occurred. Working with partners, we have stopped speeding drivers through the town and raised tickets for other traffic offences. We have also noticed a positive effect with parking since the recent parking changes/alterations in the town. Hotspot areas you highlighted for parking have continued to be our focus, and this momentum will be carried forward to strive for further improvements. We have arrested a person for robbery and a number of non-dwelling burglaries. This is currently under investigation, but again I thank the community for valuable speedy information that reinforces our great working relations. We

are currently working with partners and had a day of action with them to reduce “Anti-Social Behaviour” in Roman Close, Quinion Close and Sycamore Road. This proved really successful and again we will be aiming to repeat this in other areas of the town and villages. Operation Make Safe, has also arrived county-wide and we, your local policing team, will be visiting venues in the local area to educate on the signs of how to identify examples of child sexual exploitation. If we can help raise the awareness of this issue, then we have a much greater window of opportunity to catch the offenders.

So far, money to purchase twenty-five bicycles has been raised and has been or will be sent to Kigali as a sign of the friendship between the dioceses. One of the lay pastors to benefit is Celestin Nzabamwita, from Nkoto parish. Having access to his own transport, means that his journey to church from home will now only take him fifteen minutes, instead of an hour by foot. Others who received new bicycles said that, in addition to helping them around their parishes, the bikes would help solve some daily family challenges, such as fetching water, getting to hospital or the market, and even transporting their food crops. The Revd Richard Kellow, Kigali Link Co-ordinator, said: ‘Pastors, both lay and ordained, in Rwanda have been at the forefront of the

everyday task of rebuilding Rwanda since the 1994 genocide through prayer and engagement with their local communities in both spiritual and practical ways. The Bikes for Pastors Project is a very tangible and practical way for us to express our growing friendship with our friends in Kigali, as we support our brothers and sisters in ministry and mission.’ Members of our four parish churches raised funds through their Lent appeal. Collecting boxes were put in each Church for loose change or the proceeds of Lenten resolutions. This raised £1050 – enough for 15 bikes. Thanks to everyone for their generous response.

Churches and individuals in the Diocese of Ely have donated money to support the Bikes for Pastors Project in

their link diocese of Kigali, in Rwanda.

The new fishing season is with us again in June and, despite the wonderful array of stillwaters in the area, many anglers cannot wait until they wet a line on Fenland drains once again. June 16th is that magical day in the angler’s calender, and with all the top

quality fishing on our doorstep, I suspect one or two really keen fishermen will be sorely tempted to take a day off to catch a few fish on opening day. But where to go, and which venue is going to produce the best catches? That’s never an easy question to answer, but we can look back on past starts to the season, and I have a feeling you will not go too far wrong if you give the Twenty Foot Drain a try on the pegs close to Beggars Bridge; it’s a noted bream

area early season. Glassmoor Bank is another good selection, especially if you are after tench. My tip is to try the pegs below Chapel Bridge. Even Cock Bank could well be worth try; we did see a return to form last season, despite the weed problem. If you fancy a spot of river fishing, then the River Nene will be your first port of call. Watch out though, it’s not the easiest of waters to fish; it’s deep, moody and at times can drive you mad. But it does produce some exciting sport, particularly if you want some early season bream fishing on a swim feeder. If you now prefer stillwaters, then the likes of Decoy, Kingsland, Railway Lakes and Northey Park will all ensure a good day’s sport, with big fish action at East Delph, and just a little further afield, Float Fish Farm have a big variety of waters to suit just about everyone.

STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING?Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Whittlesey, Eastrea & Coates areas and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Many of you will already know that my father wrote a local history page in Discovering Whittlesey, and that he chose to retire this year when he reached his 80th article. Well I’m here to tell you, that he actually wrote 81, the last one being his life story, about everything that mattered to him! In 1933 Geoff was born in Low Cross, Whittlesey into a family of master thatchers. He commenced his education at the Broad Street School, before attending the March Grammar School where he played football for the school team. When he was older, he joined the Army Cadets, providing the thump as bass drummer, in the drum and bugle band. He also played cricket and football for the Isle of Ely Cadets, but shooting was his forte, gaining his marksmanship badge. He shot at Bisley in national level competition for the coveted top 100 badge, and duly earned his badge finishing 20th overall. In later life he joined the Whittlesey Rifle Club and I was able to shoot alongside him. I never beat him! He left school at the age of 15 and, not having the head for heights to become a thatcher, he joined Mr TN Rose as a Quantity Surveying Assistant. He studied hard to pass the three examinations required to become a Professional Associate of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors. He was proud to be appointed a Fellow of that Institution in later years. In 1956 he married Margaret, but within a fortnight had to report for National Service with the Royal Engineers. During his first weekend leave he was diagnosed with having German Measles - caught in the British Army! It was in the army that his love of shooting came to the fore, receiving the medal for best marksman during training. He joined three Training Regiment Royal Engineers, where he trained and his shooting skill resulted in his selection to join the Corps of Royal Engineers team. On both occasions he competed in shooting competitions at Bisley. After serving his two years of National Service, he resumed his work as a Quantity Surveyor with Mr Rose and settled into family life as first Bridget, and then I, came along.

Geoff Oldfield’s EULOGYRead at Geoff’s funeral by Philip Oldfield

In 1968 he became a partner with Keith Brown forming T N Rose and Partners, only retiring from the practice after completing 50 years within the same firm. Geoff became a founder member and later a chairman of the Whittlesey Round Table. He also joined the Whittlesea Society and was its treasurer for 20 years, then became one of the founder members of the Whittlesey Museum. He was involved with Straw Bear from the outset and continued working for the Festival for 36 years. He was elected a Trustee of the Town Lands Charity in 1977, following in his grandfather’s and father’s footsteps in that role. I am also now a Trustee, being the fourth generation family member to hold this post. My father carried out the duties of chairman for six years. When the various charities were amalgamated into the Whittlesey Charity, in 1980, Geoff was its first chairman, a position he held for 10 years. To commemorate the unification of the charities, he was instrumental in getting a clock placed externally on the wall of the Town Hall. Geoff was confirmed at St Andrews Church, Whittlesey where he later served on the Parochial Church Council. He didn’t follow his father by joining the choir however, as anyone who’s heard him sing, would know why, but he did became an accomplished bell ringer instead.

Community news |

In retirement, Geoff became Tower Captain of both St Andrew’s and St Mary’s Churches, looking after not only the bells, but the clocks as well, ensuring they kept good time. In St Mary’s Church it was his job to change - manually - the tune on the carillon. I remember when England was in a football competition, he would put on the ‘National Anthem’ but changing it to ‘Home Sweet Home’ when they were eliminated - such was his sense of humour! Geoff and Margaret used to play the Straw Bear tune on the carillon at 3 o’clock for the finale of the Festival. He retired from bell ringing at the age of 80, having served 65 years of trying not to drop any ‘clangers’! On 21st of February this year his achievement was honoured with a three-hour peal, rung by the Ely Diocesan Association at St Mary’s Church. In retirement, he and Margaret delivered ‘meals on wheels’ to the elderly and regularly took visitors to Whittlesey around the town and decided to create an actual ‘Town Tour’ leaflet. With his extensive knowledge of the town, he often produced slide shows and talks for various organisations such as the Women’s Institute. Apart from the seven years of monthly articles he wrote about local history, Geoff compiled several manuscripts on various aspects, and also had a book published in 2007 which, from a short list of 200, won an award from the Cambridgeshire Association for Local History. In his spare time (if you could imagine him having any!) he closely followed Chelsea Football Club and was fond of DIY, not only on his own house but also for his children’s as well. He was a prolific model maker using various materials, and created a very impressive model railway layout. Through all of these years he still managed to find time to gain even more badges by donating 76 pints to the National Blood Transfusion Service! For his and Margaret’s joint contribution to life in the town, they were awarded the Whittlesey Citizen Cup in 1998 and the Pride of Peterborough Cup for the best volunteer the following year. He adds, at the end of his eulogy that although he was not a member of the Methodist Church, it had been his spiritual home since 1960 where his friendship with its members had been a source of joy and comfort.

Coates Citizen of the Year 2015 - We need your vote! The Coates Citizen of the Year is an annual event that was launched in 2011 at the Coates Village Show. It celebrates a person, who has been voted for by fellow villagers, who has contributed significantly to the village over recent years.

The Coates Village show has been running for several years and celebrates the skills and talents of the local community. The committee felt that as well as celebrating one-off achievements, it would be a nice idea to recognise a person who contributes to village life on a daily basis.

We are now looking for your help in choosing the candidates for the Coates Citizen of the Year for 2015. We all know someone who is helpful, but can you think of someone who goes out of their way to help many villagers or the local community? Candidates can be of any age, and can be put forward for any reason that you feel is worthy. Maybe a teenager that helps other people tend their gardens; a person that runs a local club, meeting or charity; the helpful neighbour who always has the time when you need a hand; or a villager who is well known by everyone for their kindness.

If you have someone in mind, please include your name and contact details, the name of the person you wish to nominate, and a brief explanation of why. Nominations can be sent via email to [email protected] or in writing to Mark Fairbank, 14 Church Gardens, Coates. PE7 2BF. Closing date for nominations is Tuesday 30th June 2015.

Interesting articles to help you understand your body better.

Article Refresher - Why we Sleep

Contact DetailsAddress: Grosvenor House, Grosvenor Road, Whittlesey PE7 1AQ;

T : 01733 785214, W: www.whittlesey-osteopaths.com, E: [email protected]

This month we delve back into our articles to revisit the topic of sleep.

To start, let’s clarify what we mean by sleep. Sleep is a cyclic process that results in a temporary loss of conscious control and which can be broken by a stimulus (e.g. a bad dream, a poke or somebody snoring). The two key components of sleep are a) the cyclic nature and b) the temporary loss of conscious control. The processes that govern sleep are thus related to these two aspects.

a) The cyclic natureThe medical term for this cyclic process is circadian rhythm. This rhythm incidentally is not just related to sleep but also to other systems as well, for example our food consumption (hence we get hungry at certain times in the day). There are two systems at work here which we have named:1) The gene expressionWithin all cells, there exist certain sleep-related proteins. These proteins like to link with each other. When they do, the product (product A) activates certain genes in your cells which switches them ON (i.e. the cell awakens). The process of cell awakening however releases a substance (substance A) which, over a period of time, accumulates. Substance A unfortunately breaks apart product A. If product A is broken down, then there is nothing left to keep the genes switched on (hence to keep the cell awake) and so the genes turns off and the cell goes back to sleep. Now that the genes are off, there is no substance A and so the proteins are free to bind to one another once more, creating more product A and thus awakening the cell again. And so the cycle repeats, ON OFF ON OFF…. Please read this paragraph again slowly if you are slightly confused and it will make sense.2) The light effectImagine that all these cyclic processes are happening in each cell throughout your body. There would be chaos unless they were synchronised with each other. Enter stage left, the all-important conductor. This is a group of neurons in the brain (to be precise the hypothalamus) called the suprachiasmatic nucleus. The conductor is the all-important link between the retina [which detects daylight] and the cells. On detecting daylight, the conductor communicates a signal to all cells which synchronises them into a single uniform cycle.b) Temporary loss of conscious controlIn the upper portion of your brain-stem lives a bundle of nerves termed your arousal system. This system looks to awaken:i) part of the brain responsible for collection and distribution of sensory information, andii) the neurons responsible for analysing, interpreting and acting on this sensory information. This arousal system gradually moves between ON and OFF under the control of the conductor (SCN). Therefore, if it’s daylight, the conductor switches the arousal system to ON and the brain can respond and interpret sensory information (you are awake and responsive). As it gets dark, the conductor moves the switch to OFF and gradually the arousal system shuts down. In this state, the brain will continue to receive sensory information although it cannot do anything with it (we are asleep!). Well there you have it, sleep in a nutshell! Sweet Dreams!!!

Ten more caring jobs to be created in the areaHome Instead Senior Care, which provides care to people in their own homes in Peterborough, Whittlesey and Ramsey, has announced the creation of a further ten new jobs for the year ahead in a major recruitment drive starting this month. The need to employ more carers in the local area is a reflection of a national trend, which is a result of the ageing population. A recent report from the UK Commission for Employment and Skills, has identified the need to recruit over half a million carers by 2022. The report also listed caring as one of the careers of the future. Amy Kennedy of Home Instead says, “We are receiving more and more calls from local people and family members looking for home care, and our business has grown significantly as a result. “We consider our fantastic caregivers as everyday superheroes! They are everyday people doing extraordinary work. Whether they are providing companionship care, preparing meals, or helping with daily living routines, they are making a difference to the lives of the elderly. “For people with no prior experience, we

provide a full training programme, so anyone who is interested in a rewarding career in the growing sector, should get in touch. It is the unique and high-quality, personal service that has allowed us to grow so quickly and create these jobs in the local area.”

OPERA DUDES coming to Whittlesey LIBRARY

The event forms part of the ‘Arts Alive in Libraries’ scheme, funded by Arts Council England, which is currently running across Fenland. Cambridgeshire County Council Library Service is delivering the scheme in partnership with ADeC (Arts Development in East Cambridgeshire) and CS3 (the culture and sport consortium for Cambridgeshire and Suffolk).

As part of the scheme, each library Friends Group decides how they will spend their allocation of the funding. To help them, they are provided with an exciting menu of projects, shows and workshops for them to choose from. The full list of library events can be found at www.adec.org.uk and includes poetry workshops, graffiti art, film screenings and book festivals.

Nathan Jones from ADeC said: “The Arts Alive scheme is offering a range of exciting, and at times, surprising events in local community libraries. This promises to be another wonderful evening and I would like to thank the Friends of the Library for helping make it possible.”

On Friday 26th June, the Friends of Whittlesey Library present an unmissable evening of great fun and great singing when the internationally renowned, Opera Dudes, visit Whittlesey Library for an evening performance. Often described as “Il Divo meets Morecambe & Wise”, the Opera Dudes are Tim Lole and Neil Allen. Together they have over twenty years’ experience of entertaining audiences across the globe. Their careers have seen them work with a host of major companies, including the Royal Opera House and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra; taking on roles in The Magic Flute, Carmen, The Barber of Seville and Madame Butterfly amongst many others. This will be a wonderful opportunity to experience their classical cabaret in an intimate setting.

Doors for the event open at 7pm with tickets costing £8, which includes a ploughman’s supper. Alternatively, tickets just for the show starting at 8pm cost £5. A bar will be available throughout the evening. Tickets and more information are available from Whittlesey Library.

Although it is going to be compulsory, it’s going to help you (the owner), be reunited with your lost pet, should they do go missing. Your pet could have escaped from the garden or even got lost on a walk; you could be parted from your beloved pet and they have no way of saying who they are or where they live. A collar is helpful, but if the dog has slipped the collar, or the cat has lost it, it may be the only thing that can reunite you. Contrary to popular belief, Microchips or ID chips, only carry information, they unfortunately cannot pinpoint where your pets are. It does however, when scanned, reveal the special allocated number which is unique for that particular animal, and by being registered on the database, provides the owner’s details.

As an owner, you will need to keep these details up to date and inform the chipping company if you move house or change telephone numbers. It’s easy when you’re busy to overlook these things, but they are important to update. Inserting the microchip is very straightforward; it is inserted under the skin, usually between the shoulder blades. This is where most veterinary centres or dog wardens check for them. The chip is about the size of a grain of rice and sits comfortably under the skin, and rarely presents a problem to your pet. There is no minimum or maximum age at which a pet can be microchipped, and you can microchip all types of pets: horses, birds and

even snakes. The microchip number is registered on a database, where all of your details are logged, so when the pet is scanned by, for example, the vet they can contact the company. After providing some security information, they will release the details, the owner will be contacted and the pet reunited. If you have any questions, you can come in to Whittlesey Veterinary Centre and speak to a member of staff; they will all be happy to help, or you can call us on 01733 685514.

An Anglia in Bloom seminar and presentation was held by Bob Ollier, RHS Judge for Anglia in Bloom, at the Elgood’s Gardens Wisbech on April 28th for participants in this year’s competition to be held in July. Several members of Whittlesey in Bloom attended, and were given an illustrated talk by Bob, detailing tips and ideas on preparation and presentation on the Judging Day for the RHS competition. Following on, Bob presented certificates for the RHS ‘It’s your Neighbourhood’ Awards for 2014.

The Whittlesey In Bloom team picked up five certificates for the following projects:• St Mary’s Church Gardens which had achieved Level 3 – Developing.• The Pound, Lattersey Nature Reserve and Friends of Whittlesey Cemetery, had each gained Level 4 –Thriving.• The Whittlesey Allotments Project had earned Level 5 – Outstanding. In the photo, Bob Ollier is seen with Mrs Kay Mayor, Chair, and several members of Whittlesey In Bloom, displaying their framed certificates at the monthly meeting held at Grosvenor House, Whittlesey.

WHITTLESEY LADYSMITH WI

Whittlesey Festival provides fun for all the FamilyThe Festival, on Sunday September 6th promises to have something for all the family, no matter what age you are. Organisers of the Festival each year aim to keep the cost of the rides and amusements down to a minimum and, in some cases, there is no charge at all. This enables families to have an enjoyable time without the worry of additional expense on the day. It’s an immense pleasure to see the smiles on the children’s faces, and hear shrieks of delight as they have lots of fun. There are fairground rides, Victorian swing boats, a bouncy castle, inflatable slide, climbing walls, the Gladiator challenge and lots more. You may have already heard about, or seen, the posters around the town about our Festival Fund Raising Coffee Morning on Saturday June 6th from 10am – 1pm at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street, with all proceeds going towards subsidising the cost of rides at the Festival. There will be musical entertainment from the 1940s with ‘The Toe Tappers’, and lots of fabulous raffle prizes to be won. Entry tickets are £3.00, including light refreshments, and are available by calling Jenny Parker at Inspirations (Market Street) on

01733 205689, Averil Cosstick on 01733 705351, or Brian at the Church Office on 01733 752093. (Tickets are subject to availability at the time of this article going to press). Another firm favourite at the Festival each year, with both children and adults, are the puppet shows from the Whittlesey Christian Church marquee on the Market Square, as well as free face painting. Enjoy a stroll along Broad Street and Market Street to enjoy the huge display of over 100 Classic vehicles; it truly is an amazing sight and an opportunity to see the vehicles of yesteryear. Further along Broad Street at the Whittlesey Christian Church, is the Schools Art Exhibition with art and crafts by students and children from local schools on display. Lining the streets and areas surrounding the Market Square will be numerous stalls, music and dance displays of all types and styles to entertain you throughout the day - so remember to keep the date free in your calendar. For more information about the Festival, or to find out how you can be involved, please contact Brian Smithyman on 01733 752093 or Jenny Parker on 01733 351005.

Laughter and singing was the theme of our May meeting; Linda Scoles talked about her school days growing up in North West America, in a musical community. Linda is a unique storyteller, with a remarkable singing voice. The audience included guests from Whittlesey, Coates and Thorney, plus WI’s and ladies from the Coates

Keep Fit Club. The next meeting is our 43rd birthday party, on Tuesday 9th June at 7.30 pm at St. Andrew’s Hall. The entertainer will be James LeBec, and the competition is ‘a rose from your garden.’ For further information, contact Liz on 01733 689599.

Among the skills a financial adviser should provide, the most important, in my opinion, is Life Planning. Sound investing is not about searching for the highest performing funds, timing movements in investment markets, tax efficiency or guarantees in isolation, it is about setting out a wider picture and the development of a plan that is achievable.• The value of an investment can go down as well as up, you may not get back as much as you put in, past performance is not an indicator of future returns.A good initial meeting where short, medium and long term goals are discussed is a great starting point – then understanding the priorities and ‘what if’ conversations should result in an initial overall plan spread over a long period of time (typically to age 90 or 100). There may be some milestones along the way such as weddings, house purchase, further education costs, retirement, ‘events of a lifetime’, even the possibility of long term care, then the plan is modified at subsequent meetings. Whilst this sort of planning may be attempted using a spreadsheet, trust me when I say that it can take a very long time to get anything meaningful from all the data entry. A better way is to use proprietary software that has been developed over many years – it is not cheap but an Independent Financial Adviser should have invested in such a tool because it is an essential instrument. This has become even more important recently when I have been speaking with clients wishing to take advantage from the relaxation of pension legislation. The tool shows how much tax would be paid if the fund is stripped out, it predicts how income and expenditure

will shape up as each of the remaining pension arrangements take effect, how inflation may impact on it and what would happen if other decisions are taken – all presented in full colour charts rather than a boring string of numbers (although the number option is available to those that prefer it!)• Tax planning is not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.• Tax treatment varies according to individual circumstances and is subject to change.Another good example was for a pensioner that wanted to look at her options in respect of releasing equity from her property to help provide the lifestyle that her family was encouraging her to enjoy after the sad loss of her husband. Her income was set to reduce but costs were almost the same as before, an opportunity of converting a fixed asset (equity in her home) to additional income and an adequate emergency fund was an eye opener. • This could involve an equity release plan. To understand the features and risks, ask for a personalised illustration. When a plan is agreed, further skills are required in the selection of the best strategy, product recommendations, and effective implementation of the plan plus regular reviews. My message is to seek out financial advice from an independent financial adviser with all the relevant tools to help you and your circumstances. My contact details follow for a free initial consultation..If you have financial concerns and you are looking for some advice, why not have an initial consultation at no cost to you by arranging a meeting with me? Tax planning is not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Tax treatment varies according to individual circumstances and is subject to change..

Problem tenants? What can landlords do about it?

Buying a residential property to rent out to tenants can be a good investment and a welcome source of extra income. However, being a landlord may not always be plain sailing. If your tenants start to cause problems, for example falling into rent arrears, or allowing the property to fall into disrepair then you will want to take action to sort this out. You may decide that the best option is to require the tenants to give up possession of the property.

Firstly, you need to be aware that it is illegal to evict tenants without a Court Order.

Most residential tenancies are held on what is known as an “Assured Shorthold” basis. This means that during the fixed term of the tenancy you cannot force the tenants to leave without the Court ordering them to vacate. However, in certain circumstances, the Court can order the tenants to leave, even though the fixed term still has some time to run. This process involves serving a Housing Act 1988 Notice on the tenants notifying them of your intention to seek possession of the property and giving them two weeks or two months (depending on circumstances) to vacate (and settle any rental arrears). If they fail to do this then you can apply to the Court for a Possession Order.

Matters are simpler when the fixed term of the tenancy has expired as a Notice requiring possession can be served at any time and there is no need for the tenants

to be in default.

If you need help or advice with problem tenants please give us a call.

Fifty Shades of Grey was the long-awaited adaptation of the best-selling book (of the same name) by author E.L. James. For those who haven’t heard about it (and there can’t be many of you), the story follows literature student Anastasia Steele, whose life changes forever when she meets handsome, yet tormented, billionaire Christian Grey. The pair begin a love affair, which set hearts ablaze when the book first fell into the hands of readers. This adaptation, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and starring lesser known actors, Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, was a huge hit when it was first shown on Valentine’s Day. It’s a sympathetically made film, which captures the passion and confusion of a complicated love-affair and will surely delight fans of the novel who finally get a chance to look into the eyes of the sultry (and complicated) Christian Grey. It’s not a film that will please everyone, and fans of action thrillers might want to venture to rent something different this month, but for a fun film, that looks at the complicated nature of human love, it might just be the perfect Friday night movie with girlfriends, popcorn and your best PJs. Don’t believe me? According to trivia fans worldwide, the trailer for Fifty Shades of Grey was the most viewed trailer in 2014, collecting an impressive 100 million + views. Something tells me that this won’t be the end of Christian Grey...

Pupil wins national competition!

WHITTLESEY WI“Dress to Impress”, and a 70s Quiz Night are the themes for the meeting on Tuesday June 2nd at 7:30 pm in St Andrew’s Church Hall. It should be a fun night with prawn cocktails and Abba. May‘s meeting was a member’s night and, after voting on this year’s resolution, members enjoyed a quiz. This year’s summer outing in July will be to Oxborough Hall in Norfolk. New members are always welcome; for more information call Ginny 01733 205148.

Everyone at Alderman Jacobs Primary School (Academy Trust) is very proud of Year 6 pupil, Althea Waites, and her winning flag design. Althea entered into a national competition to design a flag for the Houses of Parliament, representing Cambridgeshire. A special programme, ‘2015: Parliament in the Making’, commemorates an important year for Parliament, celebrating two historic anniversaries. It is 750 years since Simon De Montfort’s 1265 Parliament, and the 2015 Flag Project is a unique way for schools to mark this anniversary. The project aim was to inspire young people to consider the long history of representation and how their flag could represent their area and community. The design takes inspiration from Whittlesey and includes a Straw Bear from the annual Straw Bear Festival on a background of the three Whittlesey and Coates Primary Schools’ colours – red, blue and green. Althea’s creative design was made into a real flag, and flown at the Houses of Parliament from Saturday May 16th until Friday May 22nd.

On Friday May 8th, we held a service at Whittlesey War Memorial to commemorate the 70th anniversary of V.E. Day. The service was very well supported and an Royal British Legion wreath was laid by our chairman, Mr. Ken Mayor. Our thanks go to branch members and members of the public who attended. Also, special thanks to Rev. Nigel and Rev. Gill for the composition and delivery of the service.

On the social side, a special V.E. Day indoor street party was held at the Ivy Leaf Club on Saturday May 9th. Although, sadly, not so well attended, everyone had a very enjoyable afternoon with dancing, a singalong and a 40s style buffet. Ages ranged from old soldiers in their nineties to four to five-year-old children. A great time was had by one and all. We hope to arrange similar events in August to commemorate the 70th anniversary of V.J. Day. Would all of our members please note that the renewal of membership will be changing later this year. For those members who pay annually by direct debit, you should be receiving a letter soon from Head Office to advise of new direct debit instructions. For those members who pay by cash annually, you will receive an invoice for the subscription to be paid directly into a bank. Please do not worry too much about this change. Should you have any concerns, please contact either myself or Judy Darby on the telephone numbers listed below. Our next monthly meeting will be held at the Ivy Leaf Club at 11.00am on Sunday June 7th. If you are interested in finding out more of what we do, please come along, and remember that you do not need to have served in the Armed Forces to become a member of the Royal British Legion.

We are pleased to announce that we are expanding our Benwick Road salesroom by around threefold with the intention of both enlarging the current auction area which is

June 2015 | D I S C O V E R I N G Whittlesea 69

Our meeting on April 30th was very productive and we had updates on several of our current projects with discussions about the route for the judges and the summer planting plan. I am pleased to report that we welcomed two new volunteers to our group and I hope they will be happy working with us to brighten up the town. For those of you that have visited The Pound, I’m sure you will agree that it has looked superb this Spring - from early April with buds appearing to this magnificent display at the end of the month. Sunshine and rain were just what we needed. Our thanks go to Gill whose dedication to this project cannot be ignored. Another standard rose has been planted, kindly donated by Pauline and David, two of our volunteers. The beds at the Manor entrance have also been superb this year (see front cover). The pansies with a few téte a téte daffodils dotted amongst them have been an absolute picture and many positive comments have been received. As I write, the installation of the new seat in the cemetery is imminent. The base has already been installed and I am sure by the time you read this, it will be there. We will be out on the street soon with collecting buckets to fund-raise for our cause; dates will be published soon. As mentioned previously, some residents are under the misconception that Whittlesey in Bloom is funded by the Council – this is not the case; all the plants have to be bought and the only way this can be achieved is through grants and fund-raising. Our time is given freely. As mentioned last month, the Anglia in Bloom judging will take place during the two weeks commencing Monday July 6th. A definite date is still not known, but please be assured that, as soon as we have it, we will advise you. We can say now that the route this year will start at the Manor Centre and will take in The Garden of Rest, St Mary’s Church Gardens, the Market Square, The Streetpride Rose Garden on the corner of Church Street, The Cemetery, Sir Harry Smith Community College, Lattersey Nature Reserve, The Allotments and several other areas in between. We would like anyone along the route to ensure that we don’t have any “grot spots”; yes, there are some and we hope that before the judges arrive, we will have been in contact with the various owners of the sites to ask for some remedial tidying up to help us GO FOR GOLD in 2015. Thanks for your support.

If you would like to help our town/environment and make new like-minded friends, everyone is welcome.Kay Mayor; Chairman: Whittlesey in Bloom / Friends of Whittlesey Cemeteryt: 01733 204944e; [email protected]
