Another school holidays have begun and we are half way through another year. This month we have a Colouring Competition in our Kids Corner on page 24. Send in your entries to win a special gift from Hogs Breath Café Epping.

In this months magazine we have an article written by a local Mum “Fighting Multiple Sclerosis: A Mother’s Story” on page 12. Please share her story with your family and friends so that we can come together as a community and support her in her efforts to fight MS.

I would like to leave you with a poem by author Diana Loomans from her book “100 Ways to Build Self-Esteem & Teach Values” (2004) .

Welcome to the July 2014 Edition of Your Child in Whittlesea!

ChristineChristine Ernest, Editor

If I had my child to raise over again,

I'd finger paint more, and point the finger less.

I'd do less correcting, and more connecting.

I'd take my eyes off my watch, and watch with my eyes.

I would care to know less, and know to care more.

I'd take more hikes and fly more kites.

I'd stop playing serious, and seriously play.

I'd run through more fields, and gaze at more stars.

I'd do more hugging, and less tugging.

I would be firm less often, and affirm much more.

I'd build self-esteem first, and the house later.

I'd teach less about the love of power,

And more about the power of love.

It matters not whether my child is big or small,

From this day forth, I'll cherish it all.

Treasure each day and live in the

moment!

BUSINESS OF THE MONTH

“KIDS MATTER” family day care

:

Kids Matter family day care offers quality home-based childcare in the outer northern

suburbs of Melbourne, and is an approved early education and childcare service rated as

“Exceeding the National Quality Standard”.

The philosophy of the service ensures that each child in its care is provided with the best

possible start to life. Kids Matter also values and supports the families of the children as

well as the educators in the service.

Established six years ago by experienced family day care coordinators, Trisha Alston and

Rosalie Muston, Kids Matter is now one of the largest family day care services based in

rural Victoria, servicing many regional towns and outer metro areas, such as Doreen,

Wallan and surrounding areas.

Kids Matter educators recognise that positive experiences in the early years are crucial

for a child's learning, development and emotional well being. Small group care is

provided in safe, nurturing, home settings. Interactions and experiences are based on

each child's individual interests and needs. Parents' ideas are valued and incorporated

into the care. Flexible hours of care are provided - full-time, part-time, casual, before &

after school, and school holiday care. Kids Matter also provides respite, overnight and

24 hour care (conditions apply). Child Care Benefit (CCB) & Child Care Rebate (CCR) are

available for eligible families.

In addition, Kids Matter offers suitable individuals

the opportunity to operate a successful, rewarding

home-based business within a quality education and

care service. Applicants are carefully screened, fully

oriented into the service, and receive ongoing

support from the Kids Matter resource team.

:

Motherhood has taught me most in my life

about what it means to protect and fight

for those you love. The responsibility of

being someone's mother can be hard at

times physically and emotionally. Throw in

a life changing autoimmune disease such

as Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and some days

feel overwhelming.

MS means that like approximately 23,000

other Australians, my immune system

attacks my own body. It affects the brain,

spinal cord and

o p t i c n e r v e s

which in turn can

affect nearly any

function. When

I'm having one of

my relapses the

sy m pto m s a re

horrible but then

af ter however

long (days, weeks,

months) they mostly subside. There is a

risk I will move from this stage of relapsing

and remitting symptoms to develop

Secondary Progressive MS where there is

progressive development of disability. This

is my deepest fear that I end up with a

permanent disability and not able to give

my daughter everything I dreamed.

MS has been a constant in my life for nearly

as long as my daughter has. The first

symptoms started to emerge as I held her

as a baby. I have had years of feeling far

from "normal" and

to be honest I can't

e v e n r e a l l y

remember what it is

t o b e n o r m a l

anymore. I get up

every day and feel

some sort of pain.

On a good day I only

h ave sy m p to m s

such as constant headaches (eight months

straight of migraines and severe

headaches until recently finally finding a

daily medication that can reduce them) or

muscle pain from weakness in my right

side making my left side work harder....I

just put it out of my mind as much as I can

carry on.

My daughter now is three years old and at

least to some extent understands that at

times mummy just can't do the things she

wants. But when my symptoms first

started to get

bad she didn't,

she was only one

a n d c o u l d n ' t

understand why I

couldn't pick her

up for long, run

after her or get

onto the floor

easily - although

I tried to as much

as possible.

Fighting Multiple Sclerosis:

I've had relapses where my body was

painful, had pins and needles and/or was

totally numb, it was unrelenting 24 hours a

day, 7 days a week for more than 7 months

all the way from

my chest to my

feet. I had to

consciously think

about every step I

took as I couldn't

gauge my steps or

how close to the

ground I was and I

am amazed that I never fell over. I carried it

off and no one guessed what was going on,

which is common for MS as its symptoms

are mostly invisible. I barely told anyone,

including family, for a long time. It was

terrifying, but if it wasn't for my daughter I

would have just laid around feeling sorry

for myself.

I've had vision problems and eye pain for

weeks, muscle weakness, dizziness,

ongoing insomnia and fatigue. It feels like

to r t u re . S o m e

days I feel so

extremely tired I

can barely think

yet I can't sleep

well at night. If I

have a nap in the

day then I will

have even less

chance of sleeping that night making the

exhaustion circle never ending.

My daughter is amazing. She kisses where I

hurt; she is caring and compassionate

even if she does drain what little energy I

do have with her 3-year-old stubbornness

and meltdowns. I love every moment with

her. It makes me awfully sad when I think

that she knows mummy isn't invincible

already and that one day she may also

have to be my carer rather than just my

daughter. I want to fight for her sake so I'm

travelling for stem cell therapy in Russia

next year…the closest to a cure in the

battle against MS.

Amanda Wilson is a 33-year-old mother living in South Morang and a

part-time human resource officer at a major university. She has

Multiple Sclerosis and has booked in for a stem cell transplant in Russia

next year to halt the progression of the disease. For more information
