thought it was time for a new picture, and this wonderful moment was caught by my very talented husband at Dylan’s Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, which we held for his birthday. I can promise you that the hats didn’t stay on for long, but it was a good giggle to see some of our friends turn up in outrageous hats (including a riding helmet, Suzanne....). But now that was a few months ago and I’m writing this in the hope that June will be full of sunshine to bless long summer walks and BBQs. Today it’s looking far from likely. So what exciting news has the June issue got? Well first of all we welcome the start of our Whittlesey Festival articles. It’s always a sign that summer is on the way when I start to get excited about the festival, and this year’s event will take place on the 7th of September. The full article can be found on page 8. We also have a great report on the Mayor’s Duck Race. Were you cheering on the ducks last month? And some exciting news for any keen cycling, running or swimming fans. Organisers are holding the first ever triathlon taster, to be held on the 23rd August at the New Vision Fitness centre in Whittlesey. There will be a kids 8-16 taster tri and a novice adult course, of which I am going to give it a go. So if like me, you fancy your chance at a session of swimming, cycling and running, then visit www.witri-club.co.uk or find an online entry form at www.entrycentral.com and search WiTri. Organisers are hoping for the support of our community, so make sure you get in contact if you, or a budding young athlete, would like to be involved. I know a few of you were concerned that the Mayor’s usual article wasn’t in the last issue of Discovering Whittlesea - well worry not, Dave is back! Deadlines and holidays don’t always mix well. Finally we have a fantastic competition this month to give away a pair of tickets to the Saturday Night at the Movies performance at the Broadway Theatre in Peterborough. Full details, including information about the show can be found on page 62. My final word goes to my wonderful huband and dear father, who are both brilliant men. Happy Father’s Day to you both.

Plans for this year’s Whittlesey Festival well under wayThe seventh Whittlesey Festival will be held this year on Sunday 7th

September and promises to be bigger and better than ever before. We’ve seen the Festival grow year on year and this time will be no

exception so please make a date in your diary – you wont want to miss it.

There’s something for everyone with numerous stalls and attractions. Children can enjoy free fairground rides, climbing wall, pony rides (for a nominal charge) and the ever popular free face painting which is available at the Whittlesey Christian Church marquee on the market square on the day. Here you’ll also be able to see the Puppet shows which are always popular with everyone no matter what age they are. The ever popular vintage car display increases each year with well over 100 vehicles and motorcycles too. The display will once again extend along Market Street and the whole of Broad Street so you can truly take a walk back in time. The Market square and surrounding streets will be a hive of activity with singers, musicians, marching bands and the Peterborough Highland Band. There are dance displays including line dancing, street dance, dance using flags, clog dancing and majorettes. The traditional all day Craft Fair will once again

be held in the Childers Club in Station Road and the Beautiful Baby competition which attracts so many entries every year, will be held at the Ivy Leaf Club. Further information on this will be available nearer the time. See the fantastic local Schools Art Exhibition at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street – which is open all day. The winners prize giving will be at 3pm by the Mayor of Whittlesey at the church. The Festival will also be starting with an exciting Parade from here where various community groups and those taking part will gather and set off to the Market Square to celebrate the opening of the Festival. We know you will want to come and line the streets to see the parade as the Festival gets off to a vibrant, colourful start.

Music fans will delight at a special evening of live music at St. Mary’s Church in Whittlesey on the 12th of June. Starting at 7pm until 9pm, the evening of music will include Gavin Hyde (singer of The Brays), Anthony Shiels (pianist of The Candle Thieves and singer of Sharks and Bears), plus Nick Corney. The musicians will be playing original material. Requesting just donations on the door, the Songwriter’s Circle are hoping to benefit both the Church and appeal to music fans. The team over the last month has been involved in quite a variety of incidents. A further arrest made at Coates in relation to criminal damage, discovery of cannabis factory, and repeated calls of anti-social behaviour in a variety of spots in the Whittlesey, Coates and Eatsrea area. Plus dealing with shoplifters, domestic violence , and inconsiderate motorists around issues of parking and inappropriate driving standards. This is just a taste of how the team has been occupied over the last month. We have seen an increase in the amount of persons arrested and stop search having cannabis on them in Whittlesey. The persons selling drugs may well be targeting youths and local park areas where they are likely to be during the hot summer nights. If you see any of this behaviour please do report it. It's this sort of intelligence that has lead us to recovering

drugs and arresting persons. Then conducting further searches in relation to this getting good evidence to allow charges to be brought against them.

In relation to ASB that targets persons homes we are working with partner agencies using covert CCTV systems to catch offenders. Update from the cemetery in Whittlesey, is that we have had no incidents that have come to our attention, so this is a really pleasing outcome due to the distress it was causing people within our community. Residential Burglary has also been low over the last month. Finally, planning is underway to get the policing team visible at all the schools Fetes during the summer months and look forward to seeing you all there...

Coates Citizen of the Year 2014 – We need your vote!The Coates Citizen of the Year is an annual event that was launched in 2011 at the Coates Village Show. It celebrates a person, who has been voted for by fellow villagers, who has contributed significantly to the village over recent years. The Coates Village show has been running for several years and celebrates the skills and talents of the local community. The Committee felt that as well as celebrating one-off achievements, it would be a nice idea to recognise a person who contributes to village life on a daily basis. We are now looking for your help in choosing the candidates for the Coates Citizen of the Year for 2014. We all know someone who is helpful, but can you think of someone who goes out of their way to help many villagers or the local community. Candidates can be of any age, and can be put forward for any reason that you feel is worthy. Maybe a teenager that helps other people

tend their gardens, a person that runs a local club, meeting or charity, the helpful neighbour who always has the time when you need a hand, or a villager who is well known by everyone for their kindness. Firstly, may I thank all those readers who have enquired as to why my article didn’t appear in last month’s issue. The truth of the matter is that I was away on holiday and had missed the publication deadline by the time I returned. My apologies to all and I am humbled to know that so many readers find my ramblings so enjoyable. This month marks the end of my first year in office and it has been a great honour and privilege to serve Whittlesey and the surrounding villages in the capacity of Mayor of Whittlesey Town Council. Whilst I am under no illusions about pleasing all the people all the time I hope that in some small way I have fulfilled my role satisfactorily and been able to assist as many of the public as I possibly can and this will be my aim in the coming year as I take up my second term. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all Whittlesey Town Councillors for their support and for their individual work throughout the year both as Councillors and in many other roles that they all take on throughout the town and villages. Special thanks must go to the Town Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer, Mrs Susan Evans, for all her hard work in advising the Town Council on a vast range of subjects, maintaining the offices at Grosvenor House for meetings and for public access and the many other duties that she undertakes with commendable commitment and loyalty. Of course another person who deserves special thanks is my wife, Ann, who as Mayoress has escorted me on dozens of occasions when we have represented Whittlesey Town Council on civic occasions and charity events throughout Cambridgeshire and the adjoining counties, has been at my side on numerous occasions locally for festivals and celebrations of all kinds and in conjunction with the Town Clerk has fully organised all paperwork to ensure that I am in the right place at the right time. She is also a very accomplished chauffeur! My Deputy Mayor, Cllr Dee Laws, has stood in for me when needed and as many of you must realise by now has worked tirelessly on a number of issues during the past year and I am delighted that she will be at my side again during the coming year. At the beginning of my year I made a press statement pledging action on a number of issues and it is probably appropriate now to submit a progress report. Top priority was to resist any housing development on the north side of the town and the reasons for this were set out in my publication “Whittlesey in Flood” which so many of you generously supported by purchasing a copy with funds going to my Mayor’s Charities. During the year Whittlesey Town Council has recommended refusal of planning applications on Snowley Park/ Glenfields and Showfield sites which have been

endorsed by Fenland District Council. Both these applications are going to appeal which will be heard in September at the Manor Leisure Centre in Whittlesey at which I urge the public to attend. Second priority was the settling of the supermarket issue in Eastrea Road. Whittlesey Town Council vigorously supported Sainsbury in their application to build a supermarket, commercial units and country park, again endorsed by Fenland District Council. This matter is subject to a judicial review at present but I have personally kept in touch with Sainsburys at the highest level pledging our ongoing support.Improvement of rail and bus services was also high on the agenda and these are ongoing with Cllrs Ralph Butcher and Mrs Kay Mayor working hard on the railway station situation whilst I am personally lobbying for improved bus services. Cambridgeshire County Council have earmarked funds for an extensive range of projects in the town including redevelopment of the Buttercross, a bridge over Kings Dyke crossing and you will have all been aware of considerable investment in repair and resurfacing of roads and car parks in and around Whittlesey. My congratulations to both our Cambridgeshire County Councillors, Martin Curtis and Ralph Butcher, two very experienced and dedicated councillors who I am proud to work alongside. Our festivals have gone from strength to strength and we now look forward to the “Circuit of the Fens” Cycle Race Festival to be held on Sunday 27 July. It is small wonder that for the third year running Whittlesey was voted Pride of Fenland at the annual Fenland Enterprise Business Awards and we are definitely going for four in a row! Last year I supported Whittlesey Scouts and Guides, Friends of Whittlesey Library and Community Navigators as my nominated charities. This coming year funds will be raised for the Whittlesey branch of the British Legion to support them in their special centenary year of remembrance of the outbreak of the Great War. Additionally, as Almoner of St Andrew Lodge and Churchwarden at St Andrews Church I am acutely aware of the good work carried out by Hospital at Home and so will also be supporting them. MY thanks to everyone for their contributions and support in the past year and I look forward to continued good news in a year’s time.

SIMON’S RECIPE OF

THE MONTH

Simon Norris,J Jones Butchers“

”Warm salad of Jersey Royals and Wild Mushrooms.

Ingredients:400-500g Jersey Royals, as small as possible

and scrubbed, not peeled4 tbsp rapeseed or mustard oil (or a mild

olive oil for cooking) 2 cloves garlic, sliced

1 red chilli, sliced (deseeded, if you like it mild)

100g wild mushrooms, cleaned and sliced, (be creative)

Juice of 1 limeBunch of fresh chives and bunch of fresh

dill, roughly chopped

Instructions:1. Boil the potatoes in plenty of salted water

for 8-12 minutes (the larger they are, the longer you should cook them), or until just tender. Drain and cool thoroughly, then slice in half

lengthways. Set aside.

2. Put the oil in a large pan or wok over a high heat. When really hot, add the garlic, chilli and

mushrooms. (stir-fry) until they start to crisp a little and catch - it will only take 2 minutes at

the most. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.

3. Add the potatoes to the hot wok and fry just as fast for 3-4 minutes, so that they catch a

tiny bit too. Take the wok off the heat and stir through the mushrooms. Add the lime juice and all the herbs. let the herbs wilt as they sweeten

up slightly that way. Season to taste with a pinch of salt and a couple of grinds of black

pepper, and serve warm, if possible

A NOTE FROM THE TOWN CLERK,Sue EvansAs a reminder to everyone, the Full Council meeting is always the 2nd Wednesday of the month and is held at Grosvenor House, Grosvenor Road, Whittlesey, commencing at 7.30 members of the public are always welcome to attend.

The Planning and Projects meetings are held on the 4th Wednesday of the month, with the Finance & Policy meeting being held on the first Monday of the month.

The agendas for all meetings are posted on the notice board outside Grosvenor House and on the Market place; they are also listed on the ‘Shape Your Place’ website under the section entitled ‘Whittlesey Town Council’.

ALLOTMENTSIn 2010 the town council commenced the redevelopment of the allotments, since then the site has flourished and now accommodates a total of 101 plots, being made up of half and full plots.

The site also boasts a compostable toilet that was obtained by the ‘Whittlesey Allotment & Garden Society’ through grant funding, along with a substantial amount of new hedging, again obtained through grant funding.

The historic waiting list of over 150 people has been substantially reduced and therefore new members are welcome, if you would like to have an allotment, please contact me and I will add you to the list.

have known Bernard Chambers for a long time. His family lived in a 17th century thatched cottage in Delph Street adjacent to The Elms. This building has since been pulled down and a new one erected in its stead. He has spent some time living in parts of Whittlesey, the States and is now back in England living in Suffolk. He wanted to trace his family and asked me to help which I was able to do. In passing he mentions an incident which happened in the town which I thought was worth repeating. Bernard had just returned to the Sir Harry Smith Community College in September 1958 after spending most of the summer holiday fishing in the various dykes over Whittlesey Wash. Mr Harry Cook was his class tutor, a History teacher. However an exciting event took place a few days after returning to school, which itself formed part of Whittlesey History. Bernard never stayed for school lunches, not liking custard and semolina returning home each day, but today was going to be different. “On entering the kitchen I noticed he large mahogany table which was usually set for lunch, was piled high from each corner, pyramid fashion, with such delights as jam and custard tarts, doughnuts, cream cakes, swiss rolls and all types of bread. I knew that my father was employed as foreman for the Isle of Ely County and the sudden explanation for this sudden windfall came as my father emerged from the other side of the piled confectionary and explained between mouthfuls of vanilla slice. It would apear that a fully laden London Brick Co. Lorry and an equally laden Whittom’s bread van, travelling in opposite directions, had tried to cross the Little Bridge over the Moreton’s Leam on Whittlesey Wash at the same moment. Unfortunately the bread van lost the unequal contest spilling most of the confectionary on the road and into Moreton’s Leam.” Mr Chambers who was been called to the scene and who never missed an opportunity, immediately invoked his policy of ‘waste not want not’ and loaded up his council van with the remaining confectionary, tarts, tarmac and all! The following Friday’s Whittlesey Reporter newspaper dated 28th September 1958 reported the accident, together with a picture of the scene with Mr Chambers talking to two policemen and pointing along the road towards Thorney, no doubt explaining where the cakes had gone from

the bread van. The Wash Road was blocked for a short time while the van driver, Mr Leslie Chattel of 1, Priory Road Spalding was taken by ambulance to Peterborough Memorial Hospital suffering from facial injuries, the cab and the body of the van being severely damaged. The driver of the lorry driven by Mr Ronald Ayres, of 29 Northgate Whittlesey, was uninjured. The fact that the bridge was constructed of iron prevented the van from falling into the water. The fish were so well fed that normal fishing was impossible for many weeks. Thirty years later, when Bernard was a police sergeant stationed at Whittlesey, he met the two police officers in the picture, who had both retired many years earlier. They remembered the accident very well and they often wondered where the contents of the bread van had disappeared to.

Pilgrimage has been part of our human experience from its earliest origins. Within our Judeo/Christian tradition we can trace the practice back to Abraham, being told by God to leave his home and journey to a new place, the Israelites escaping from slavery in Egypt and their 40 year journey to the Promised Land, Jesus’s journey into the desert before he began his ministry. In the Christian world of today there are many places of pilgrimage, for example Canterbury in Kent, Walsingham in Norfolk, Lourdes in Southern France, St Peter’s in Vatican City, Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Emphasis is placed on the journey as much as the destination and also the importance of joining with others. You may start out on your own or as a group of friends or strangers. You can be sure that somewhere along the route or at the destination you will meet people with whom to

share the experience. Pilgrimages can be easy or hard, of little risk or great risk. A car journey to Walsingham is pretty straight forward from here but what about walking to Santiago de Compostela through France, across the Pyrenees and into Spain. For Christians a pilgrimage is an opportunity to draw closer to God through prayer, reflection and effort. You may not be planning such a journey this year but life itself is such a journey from birth to death. Our lives at times may be easy and risk free but at other times can be hard, stressful and inclined to risk. Through the journey of our lives we all have the opportunity to be drawn closer to God. Recently on the BBC there was a short series about ‘Pilgrimage’. A reporter travelled to sites of pilgrimage around the world both religious and secular. A pilgrimage is essentially a journey to a specific place which has a significant meaning for the pilgrim.

June 16th, that magical day in the calendar of every true fisherman is just around the corner and we see a welcome return to natural waters after the close season. Its the day the new angling season gets underway on fenland drains and rivers right across the area and this year could well produce something special over the next few weeks thanks to a relatively

mild winter. The Whittlesey drains are renowned as top quality bream waters so we can expect to see some big weights taken from the Twenty Foot Drain and Glassmore Bank. Many locals also feel there is a good chance that tench will also show in good numbers too, with Cock Bank and again Glassmore the possible hot spots. A little pre-baiting in the days leading up to the start should reward your efforts with some cracking early season action. Worms, casters and perhaps even a tin or two of sweetcorn should attract the fish into the area then all you have to do is catch them! Our local club, Whittlesey AA have a whole host of waters ready for you to fish, many of them

famous throughout the world of angling for their excellent sport. On the clubs books at the moment are;Ashline Sluice to Floods Ferry, North Western Cut to Bevills Leam, Pondersbridge to Goosetree Corner. They now also have the fishing rights to The Counter Drain and Moretons Leam from Whittlesey to Rings End for club members to fish. You can view a map of their waters and other club information on their web site; www.whittleseyaa.org.uk. This year’s membership handbooks will be in local fishing tackle shops and the tariffs are as follows; £17 adults, £5 for Juniors, £8 concessions, £5 Whittlesey Senior Citizens and £4 day tickets. Finally do not forget your 2014/15 rod licence before you set off for a day fishing, available from the post office or online.

Our BIG thanks to Georgie and the fantastic team at the Norwich & Peterborough Building Society, (Whittlesey branch) for their recent help with Whittlesea Street Pride. The N&P has chosen our group to carry out some community engagement. When Georgie contacted us and asked how they could help, I gave her plenty of options!Their first shared projected was our spring clean of the ‘Rose Garden’ at the top of Church Street.Maybe some of our readers are unaware of this piece of land. It was once the front garden of Mr Sam Pole who for many years was a local Whittlesey vet, the house is known now as ‘Poles Court’. The house was converted into flats some years ago. The small front garden was left to go derelict. We approached the owners who were only too pleased to let us tidy the area, and also rebuilt the dwarf wall – thanks to Mr Robert Gregory at Rose Homes (Whittlesey). Many local councillors made donations for the project to get off the ground. Since then we are grateful to the many local residents and businesses that have made this site what it is today.

Two things have influenced this month’s editorial. One is the latest attempt by national Politicians to convince us that we are a Christian Nation; somehow I think this has less to do with serious belief than it does with trying to buy back the lost Christian voter after totally ignoring their concerns over recent ill thought out changes. I suppose only the post-election months will determine that. The other influence resulted from a recent conversation with someone genuinely curious to know what I did with my time, and what my responsibilities as Pastor of our growing church entailed. They were surprised to learn that I am normally at my desk by 7/7.30, but try to leave by 3.30pm in case I need to see people or attend meetings in the evening I also explained that throughout my extensive time spent in Church Leadership I have never been afraid to walk away from projects or demands on my time which have a negative impact on what I see as my primary responsibility, namely keeping our church at the forefront of involvement in the spiritual and natural life of our great community, and to making sure that my office is always open to any member of our church family, or the public, requiring care or counsel. Further questions followed, which prompted me to remind them of the advice given to everyone by God, who is actually totally committed to helping us discover who we really are, and achieving

We had our Latest Friends of the Country Park meeting last week. It was really heartening to see over 30 people turn up to the Town council offices and for us to begin to put together the beginnings of a committee that will help to move the project forwards. The new Facebook page also has over 200 likes – I would love to have more, so please feel free to take a look:www.facebook.com/whittleseypark We will post whatever updates are needed onto that page and let you know of future meetings and dates. One thing we discussed last week was putting together a few draft plans and holding an exhibition of some sort. We have another community group that would help from some similar support. These groups are always better when residents get involved and it doesn’t just become a place for Councillors. Unfortunately we are struggling with resident involvement with Whittlesey Action for Youth (although we have some great young people

involved). That group is there to help co-ordinate youth activity in the Whittlesey area, but also to help with fundraising. We now have a newly refurbished Scaldgate Centre, why not come along to our next meeting and help us make sure we get the best out of it? If you want to know the details, please email me. I often repeat that we should be positive about what is happening in Whittlesey. There are some good things going on; it looks like we are now in a position where our plans for the Town Centre can really move on, Kings Dyke Bridge is progressing (should be some consultation on this later in the year) and we have projects like the Country Park progressing. everything we are capable of - “do not allow society to mould you into what they want you to be” - If I accepted every invitation to join committees or attend conferences and projects that others try to assure me are important; or to comply to the stereo-type style of minister or church, then I would not feel as fulfilled as I do, and those who visit, then ultimately settle with us, would not be telling me how great it is to be part of such an exciting church family. As a young preacher I recall a successful elderly minister giving me this advice - ‘don’t allow pointless religious bureaucracy to swallow up your time, and never be tempted to be a duplicate of someone else’. The older I get the more I value such advice. Have you discovered who you really are yet? Or maybe you need help to point you in the right direction. Pop along one Sunday morning @ 10.45, you could surprise yourself and enjoy it.

WHITTLESEY WI celebrating 95 years from 1919 - 2014

Whittlesey WI was founded in April 1919 and met in St Mary’s Parish Hall until April 2001, when meetings moved to St Andrew’s Church Hall. The ideals of the WI of truth, justice, tolerance and friendship are as relevant today as at the birth of the WI movement in 1915. The national WI celebrates its Centenary in 2015. Over the years our members have been involved in many local events, including the Whittlesey Agricultural Show where the float pictured in 1979 came 2nd in the competition. Two members in that photo, Doris Band and Kay Templeman who first met when they were in the Land Army are still close friends. They are also pictured in the more recent photo when they both celebrated their 90th birthdays the year after Whittlesey WI was 90. Ruby Hurst has been a member for over 60 years and is also in the picture. Meetings are held on the 1st Tuesday of the month at 7 30 pm in St Andrew’s Church Hall . The next meeting is on Tuesday 3rd June, when it will be a Social evening with the Theme ‘Deal or No Deal’.

WHITTLESEY Manor Bowls Club members are raising money for Magpas this season

Over the past few years the club, based at the town's Leisure Centre complex, has raised in excess of £2,000 for the local St John Ambulance and Cancer Research, most of it from the annual tournament held in memory of former long-serving member Peter Bavister, which this year is being held on Saturday, August 30th. On top of that, the club will also be hosting a charity event on Sunday, August 3rd on behalf of Northants Bowling Federation president Malcolm Squires in aid of the blind.

The club, which has some of the best bowling facilities in the area, welcomes new members and offers free tuition and use of equipment for those wanting to experience the sport for the first time. “Bowls is regarded as the 'Sport for All,' one that all the family can enjoy, whatever their ages, and coupled with the club's very active social calendar, that includes quizzes and barbeques, it provides the ideal opportunity for people to make new friends,” said club secretary Melvyn Beck.

The digestive system is simple in design and concept. It starts off as a single tube from mouth to anus in the foetus. As the system matures [in the foetus] our digestive organs (stomach, liver, spleen and pancreas) sprout from the tube with the remaining tube forming the small and large intestines. When we eat, our chewed food passes through the tube and different components are absorbed through the walls into the waiting blood vessels. Our digestive organs produce specialist chemicals that empty into the intestines at key points and facilitate the breakdown of the chewed food. Whatever remains at the end of the process is expelled and the whole process takes between 8-24hrs.

Movement The digestive system is tightly packed into the abdominal cavity however the individual organs (in particular the small & large intestines)

are still able to slide over one another. Think of spaghetti with a generous coating of olive oil compared to non-oiled spaghetti. When this sliding motion is impaired the movement through the intestines is also impaired leading to abdominal cramps, collick pain and problems passing stools. This is very evident in those who have inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease. Our general movement (I.e. bending ,twisting, rotating), breathing and regular intake of food ensures these sliding characteristics are maintained. Sitting however is not conducive as the volume within the abdominal cavity is decreased. AbsorptionAs we touched on earlier, the chewed food is absorbed by cells that are situated on the intestinal walls. These walls need to be clean for the cells to absorb effectively. Unfortunately, some food types can stick to the sides creating scum in a similar manner that limescale sticks to the side of our water pipes. This means that although we are eating correctly we will not get the maximum benefit, i.e. we are absorbing less nutrients per kg of food. Fear not, as nature has created its own tube cleaners for us in the name of roughage. Many food groups can be considered roughage but

are broadly found in a wide range of vegetables, fruits, grains and pulses. These have compounds which passes through the tube with no intention of being absorbed. Rather they bang against the walls on their way down eroding the scum. This is one of the reasons why the recommended vegetables per day has increased from 5 to 7.CommunicationOur digestive system has its own communication system. This means that when food enters the mouth, the organs further down the line are already preparing for the arrival of the chewed food. This is logical because the food flows through the intestines quickly. Therefore if the organs start producing the chemicals when the food arrives by the time the chemicals are released the food would have already gone. We can sometimes trick this system into coming alive when there is no need. The most common example is chewing gum or sweets. These give the impression food is arriving when in reality nothing is. The organs have wasted energy producing these chemicals and these chemicals then sit in your intestines with potentially negative consequences. The same is true (but to a less degree) for snack-like foods such as crisps, nuts, crackers, etc. Interestingly, eaten after a meal they may prolong the release of chemicals thus improving digestion. Nursery gives Whittlesey children a kick-start to their learning

WHITTLESEY LADYSMITH W.I.June is Ladysmith W.I. birthday meeting and members are celebrating summer with a buffet with a mediterranean theme on Tuesday 10th June at 7.30pm in St Andrew's Hall, Parkinsons Lane. There will also be a 'surprise' speaker coming along to join in the fun and the competition for this month is a Photo of the Fens. Whittlesey Friendship Group meet between 2 and 4pm every Saturday. With a donation of a £1, residents can enjoy tea, biscuits and the chance to make new friends. At the end of the April the group visited Baytree and Springfields. All 49 members enjoyed lunch before spending a few hours shopping. Everybody had a great day. Their next trip is in July where they plan to go to Sandringham and Hunstanton. Vericool For Schools Circuit of The Fens 27th July 2013 at 12.00 pm

In a little over two months time the Vericool For Schools Circuit of the Fens Elite Cycles race will be starting and finishing in Whittlesey and it will be televised. As a reminder the town centre route has been revised to take in a larger 4 mile finishing circuit with some challenging elements. These include Drybread Road, the race should come through the town centre every 12 Minutes at very roughly 3.45 pm depending on weather conditions. The support race is due to finish in the town centre at approximately 3.00 pm. Last year the race left the town and to be honest not a lot happened until it came back. Thanks to the enthusiasm of the town’s folk this year will be a different story. In addition to the races a day of entertainment in the town centre has been arranged. Shortly after the race departs there will be live music and stalls to keep the atmosphere going throughout the afternoon. Even if you are not interested in cycling there will

RoboCop is a 2014 American science fiction action film directed by José Padilha. It is a remake of the 1987 film of the same name and reboot of the RoboCop franchise. In RoboCop, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Overseas, their drones have been used by the military for years - and it’s meant billions for OmniCorp’s bottom line. Now OmniCorp wants to bring their controversial technology to the home front, and they see a golden opportunity to do it. When Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) - a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit - is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer. OmniCorp envisions a RoboCop in every city and even more billions for their shareholders, but they never counted on one thing: there is still a man inside the machine pursuing justice. What the new changes to pension mean

Firstly you might notice a change in the design of my contribution. I am re aligning my business with a more local and personal service based in Peterborough. As my administration and back up will be more comprehensive and efficient I will be providing an even better service for my clients. Following previous articles I have been asked to explain more about the recent changes an-nounced in the last budget. The first change is already effective, if the total of your pension funds (excluding state benefits) is below £30,000 it can all be taken as a lump sum although some will be subject to tax – depending on your circumstances. In April 2015 those aged 55 or over with funds greater than £30,000 (increased from £18,000) can liberate their funds. Whether they should do so is a personal decision, the suitability of doing so will depend on their circumstances and their objectives.Drawdown Some individuals are already, or may wish to, take their pension within a drawdown arrange-ment. Their maximum income rate will increase following the budget – this might be good news for some, however, the flip side is that such a decision could potentially lead to lower income later, so it is important to take advice. Those wanting to apply for flexible drawdown (owner of pension can take any amount from a drawdown arrangement that they wish subject

to taxation) after satisfying a minimum income threshold of £12,000 rather than £20,000 – what constitutes a minimum income may be an area to seek advice on.Small pension pots If an individual has pension funds worth £10,000 or less, up to three can be taken as lump sums (25% tax free 75% potentially tax-able) – even if there are other personal or com-pany pension benefits. If access to a lump sum is important this might be an area worth exploring.Role of an annuity For many the purchase of an annuity will re-main the best option. An annuity is where a lump sum from your pension buys a regular income. There are options that will affect the price e.g. whether for a fixed term or whole of life, increas-es each anniversary, joint or single life and most importantly – the rate offered by the provider, it remains very important to ‘shop the market’ before deciding which you choose because once the decision is made – there is no turning back. Benefits of an annuity can include certainty without investment risk, however, not under-standing how options might fit in with your cir-cumstances can result in the risk of low income further down track, for example if inflation erodes the buying power of your income. Changes to Children and Family Law

The Children and Families Act 2014 (CFA 2014) came into force on the 22nd of April 2014 and introduces changes both in public law( where social services are involved), private law children proceedings (where the children live, how they will see the other parent) and Divorce proceedings.

In public law proceedings, amongst other things, it imposes a 26-week deadline for care and supervision proceedings to be dealt with by the courts and only under exceptional circumstances will that deadline be extended by up to a further 8 week. It introduces changes to the orders which the courts can make, in particular the length of time they are made for. It also introduces new provisions about post adoption contact.

There are now strict rules in all family matters about expert evidence. It is now not straightforward if you want to rely on an expert to give evidence. This will need to be justified to the court as being an exceptional requirement.

In relation to private law children’s proceedings a controversial new subsection

added to the Children Act 1989, adds a presumption of parental involvement with the children on separation. Contact and residence orders are no longer orders which can be made; they are replaced by child arrangement orders.

The requirement to attend a MIAM or mediation appointment is now obligatory, except in a few circumstances when making an application to the court about family matters.

The CFA 2014 gets rid of the requirement for the court to consider on divorce whether to exercise its powers under the Children Act 1989 and therefore the Statement of Arrangements (Form D8A) which was required to be filed with a divorce petition where the parties had children under 18 is no longer required.

NEWS FROM THE R.B.L.First of all we would like to thank all those people who have kindly donated teddies and cuddly toys for our poppy appeal stall. We are urgently in need of these and will happily collect them locally. If you have passed the Whittlesey memorial recently you may have noticed that the poppies, sown last month, have germinated and are growing well. It looks like there could be a poppy for everyone in the area! June the 6th marks the 70th anniversary of D Day. This historical event is being covered widely both locally and nationally by the media and our branch has arranged a big band dance on Saturday 7th of June. We hope to produce photos and a report in the next issue.On August 4th commemorative events will be held around the country to mark Britain’s entry into the First World War a century ago. This was the night that Sir Edward Grey famously remarked “ The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime”. The Centenary is a particularly poignant time for the Royal British Legion. Our charity was born out of the aftermath of the First World War, as veterans’ organisations joined ranks to provide mutual support during the transitional years that followed the Armistice. The red poppy of Flanders, the national symbol of Remembrance and hope for a better world, was

also born from that conflict. The Act of Remembrance itself, the Cenotaph, and the Two Minute silence are all associated with the RBL as the custodian of Remembrance, and all were brought into being as the nation struggled to come to terms with its First World War losses. But the Centenary is not only about the past. As we recall the events of a century ago, we are reminded of the service and sacrifices of the British Armed Forces of today. The work of the Legion in helping Armed Forces families and veterans is as vital today as it was when the Legion was formed, in the aftermath of the First World War. The Legion will be using the Centenary to engage with a new generation of supporters and to reach out to a broader community of comradeship. Together we will be taking the opportunity to engage with our families, friends and community to remind ourselves and others, that our mission is just as vital now as it has ever been.

To the good folk of Whittlesey, We now have been informed by Peter kozak at the planning inspectorate at Bristol that a date has been set for the appeal hearing, this will be on Tuesday the 16th of September and is penciled in for four days at the Manor Centre on Station Road. This will be the last opportunity to demonstrate your opposition to the development and will be the last chance to be heard. Time will be allocated for interested parties to speak if they so wish to do so and I am confident of a good turn out as it affects not only the immediate residents of Snowley Park and Glenfields, but the whole north side of town as well as putting additional pressure on our infrastructure: roads, schools, doctors. Our biggest concern is that it will only

exasperate the problems of the existing residents at risk of flooding to the north of town. In last months edition our Councillor Dee Laws highlighted the flood warden scheme, we have this scheme in place for a reason and Whittlesey residents are aware of the flooding issues we encounter more and more frequently. The knock on effects to us all, when the B1040 is closed, is that it brings the town to a standstil in rush hour. Both Whittlesey Town Council and F.D.C will continue to support residents in pursuit of a complete REFUSAL at the inquiry/appeal. If like us you feel the same way, we would ask that you pencil in some of your valuable time to attend the appeal in September and let the voice of Whittlesey folk be herd. M. MAYORS DUCK RACE - Easter Bank Holiday Monday 21 April

This year's Mayor's Duck Race in aid of local charities was held as usual along The Bower with a starting point at the bridge in Ramsey Road in glorious warm sunshine attracting large crowds on either side of the river bank witnessing a keenly contested event involving a record 993 ducks resulting in a quacking finish by the towpath cottages. The race was not without drama out of the water with Cllr Ken Mayor, Chairman of Fenland District Council, collapsing at the starting line just prior to the race and Mr Graham Coxall collapsing at the finishing line. Happily both men were declared fit and well after treatment at Peterborough City Hospital and I am most grateful to two off duty St John's Ambulance members at the scene for their valuable assistance. Grateful thanks also go to the Cambridgeshire Fire Service for their attendance and assistance in encouraging the ducks to get underway and for Andrew and his two daughters from the Whittlesey Cycle Shop for their valuable contribution at the finishing line in ensuring that all the ducks were safely gathered in and returned to their respective homes. Special thanks go to Cllr Kay Mayor and our Town Clerk, Mrs Susan Evans, for their work in organising the event and selling tickets both before and on the day. Unfortunately Kay did not get to witness the race having more pressing matters in escorting her husband Ken to hospital by ambulance. Last and by no means my thanks go to everyone who bought a ticket or generally supported the event in anyway. The proceeds of the Duck Race will be passed on to my nominated charities of the year which are Community Navigators, Whittlesey Scout and Guide Association and the Friends of Whittlesey Library. The winner of the first prize of £50 went to David Belfield, second prize of £25 to the Cuthbert family and third prize of £10 to Mrs Dale.

SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES AT PETERBOROUGH’S BROADWAY THEATRE

The choirs will be celebrating their return to the iconic building by opening up the 1200 seat auditorium to the people of Peterborough for one night only on Saturday 5th July with Saturday Night at the Movies, their spectacular and highly-anticipated musical salute to Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters. Celebrating the creative genius of film music composers John Williams, Hans Zimmer, John Barry, James Horner and other greats, the choirs - accompanied by the 46-piece Peterborough Festival Orchestra - will perform theme songs from Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings, Jurassic Park, James Bond and many more! As well as paying tribute to Hollywood, the concert honours the long heritage of the Broadway Theatre, which operated successfully as a cinema for over 50 years, opening as the Odeon in 1937 not long after Peterborough Male Voice Choir was founded by workers from Peterborough’s old sugar beet factory in 1935. Like the choir, the building has been an important part of the city’s cultural landscape for close to three quarters of a century. Peterborough Male Voice Choir first performed at the Broadway Theatre with legendary soprano Lesley Garrett in 2011; more recently members of Peterborough Voices and Peterborough Youth Choir performed there alongside Marti Pellow in Bill Kenwright Ltd’s national tour of Evita and in Joseph, with all three choirs rounding off 2013 on stage with a full house at the Broadway in their ever-popular annual festive celebration Christmas Magic. EASTREA VILLAGE HALL

When the spectacular Eastrea Centre opened last summer, it was hoped that the annual number of visitors might top 10,000 in the second year. In fact this target has been reached after the first nine months. The person picked out to mark the occasion is Jonathan Gamble of Mayfield Road, Eastrea, who attends the Fenland ju-jitsu Academy classes held every Wednesday. Jonathan was presented with a certificate and a gift token by Nicola Brooks, who chairs the executive committee.

The hall has a large kitchen, and hire rates start from £10 per hour for small parties. A fully staffed cash bar can be offered at a very low price, and the hall can seat 160 people at tables, and more

in rows. The 40-seat boardroom is equipped for computers, with a digital projector in the ceiling, drop-down screen, hi-fi and HMDI. There are shower rooms inside, and fully fenced lawns to keep youngsters safe and secure. The hall has extensive car-parking — with an off-site overflow car-park.

COMMUNITY UPDATE As many of you will be aware, the outline planning application for the Showfield site was refused by Fenland District Council just before Christmas. We understand that the applicant has appealed, and that the date for the public enquiry will be announced in the near future. The Action Group will remain in place and will respond as appropriate to any future actions.

While there were many issues highlighted, the principal reasons for rejection were:-

l Flood risk and surface water drainage when the Washes are in flood, both to new and existing residents.

l The landscape and visual impact of the site to adjoining residents and to the scenic open land views from the north looking towards the town.

l Highway safety for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

It was notable that our elected representatives on Whittlesey Town Council, Fenland District Council and Westminster expressed their concerns and objections to the proposal, and expressed this in their articles last month in Discovering Whittlesey.

The Showfield Action Group would like to thank all those in the community who sent letters of objection, and those many who have given their time to deliver leaflets and collect signatures on the petition. It is clear that the strength of public opinion against this development was a significant factor when the planning department considered this application.

In the light of recent flooding elsewhere in the countryside and our ever changing environment, Whittlesey has been very fortunate so far this winter, but we believe that any significant development to the north of the town can only increase the risk of flooding, both now and for the future generations to come.

For anybody not aware of the proposed Showfield development, the application is for outline planning permission for 249 homes on the edge of the flood plain to the north of Whittlesey. This will increase the size of the town by about 4%, and by its nature will inevitably affect almost everyone in some way, regardless of which part of the town you live in. We believe its location has the potential to increase the flood risk and that the traffic impact will be dangerous, with around 500 vehicles joining direct onto the B1040 via an awkward junction, or alternatively exiting through narrow residential streets adjacent to Alderman Jacobs School, the largest primary school in our area. The application was rejected by both Whittlesey Town Council and Fenland District Council, but the developer has appealed. We believe the appeal will be held from September 23rd, probably over four days. Whittlesey Town Council has requested it be held locally. At a public meeting in March attended by over

250 people, there was overwhelming support for the proposal that the Showfield Action Group should hire its own legal team to represent the interests of the residents of Whittlesey, working in conjunction with that of Fenland District Council and that we should raise about £10000 for this purpose. We have only one chance to defeat this proposal. If you are concerned at this development and believe you can help us to reach this goal by donating to our fighting fund, please take note of the insert in this month’s edition of Discovering Whittlesea.

PARKING ISSUESIn the May edition of Discovering Whittlesea an article from the New Queen Street Surgery Patients Participation Group highlighted the issue of vehicles being parked for lengthy periods in the Surgery Car Park. Over several months Councillors have unfortunately received numerous complaints from residents complaining about inconsiderate parking opposite junctions and /or at junctions, on footpaths, outside schools etc. The whole issue of waiting and parking is dealt with in Sections 238 – 252 of the Highway Code; in particular Section 243 which gives clear indication on where motorists should not stop or park. One of these being “opposite or within 10 metres (32 feet) of a junction” – unfortunately

in some areas of our Town this particular issue is becoming more and more of an issue. This applies to all junctions not just the major routes. There are problems in areas where motorists park directly opposite other streets and on corners within estates which is causing major concerns amongst residents – “an accident waiting to happen” is a phrase all too often used. We do not want to wait for an accident to happen. We are all aware of the problems parking in the vicinity of our Schools and parking on footpaths causes problems for disabled persons using mobility aids and also for parents with pushchairs – please think where you are parking. The Council is in contact with our local Police Officers about the problem and we are working with them in an attempt to educate motorists about this.
