I cannot believe we are half way through 2013 already!

It is a new financial year and time to start thinking about those tax returns. It is also a time to take stock, review our finances and create a new family budget. Goals and plans are an important part of good financial health.

For parents with school-aged kids, its school holiday time! On the one hand, this means a break from packing lunches, the morning rush and the frenzy of after-school activities and homework. On the other hand, it is a time to get creative and come up with activities and entertainment to cure the boredom blues! We have plenty of great school holiday activities on our Facebook page . We have a wide variety of articles in this edition, addressing a range of issues relevant for parenting babies and older kids. In keeping with the current awareness campaign on bullying we have a special spread about identifying and preventing bullying. We also have some articles focussed on you, the parent, which encourage you to take time-out for yourselves and to connect with your partners.

Epping Plaza is a major shopping centre located in one of Melbourne's fastest growing

corridors with over 200 stores, including a fresh food precinct, lovely wide malls, bright

hub in the Northern suburbs, Epping Plaza managed and owned by Pacific Shopping

Centres is consistently looking at ways to improve the Centre and is currently

constructing a new Restaurant and Entertainment Precinct called 'Urban Diner'.

This exciting Restaurant and Entertainment precinct will add approximately 9,288 sqm

to the existing Centre's retail space. It will include 9 restaurants, outdoor dining, a

children's play area, a newly refurbished food court plus, the addition of a 2 auditorium

“Gold Lounge” cinema. The new precinct is designed to further promote community

interaction and provide a unique leisure destination. It also provides job opportunities

for the community during and post development. CEO Graham Terry stated “The Urban

Diner project is a $30 million addition to Epping Plaza, further enhancing its status as

the premier shopping and leisure destination in the North'. The development works

are well underway and is scheduled to be completed by late 2013.

On 12 April 2011, the Premier announced the Victorian

Government's Bully Stoppers campaign to ensure that action is

taken to make schools safer and protect students from any form

of bullying. To support this campaign, the Department of

Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) has

presented all Victorian schools with an opportunity to obtain

between $5000 and $10000 through the Bully Stoppers grant

program. Telstra is a proud supporter of the grant program and

will provide each school with a digital device and cybersafety kit.

Over 100 schools received funding in round one of the program and applications for round two opened on Tuesday 11th June at: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/programs/bullystoppers/Pages/pringrants.aspx

This round of funding is aimed to assist more schools to implement strategies or programs that endeavour to prevent and respond to bullying (both face-to-face and online) and support collaborative school and community partnership approaches in their school community. Parents and/or carers have an important role in supporting schools to provide safe and supportive environments for all children. These grants provide a great opportunity for everyone at school to work together and make it known that bullying is not acceptable.

The site includes down loadable advice sheets that have been developed by experts in the field, including internet safety consultant, Robyn Treyvaud, clinical psychologist, Andrew Fuller and cybersafety expert, Susan McLean.

In addition, two interactive modules for parents were made available in late May. These modules have been developed in partnership with Andrew Fuller, (clinical psychologist and student well-being specialist) and Susan McLean (cybersafety expert). They have been designed to help parents understand, recognise and manage bullying and cyberbullying behaviours and to address standards of behaviour in the context of cybersafety and social media.
