Although this is the May issue, I am actually writing my introduction on a slightly rainy April morning. Today is actually my due date, and so far our little man hasn’t arrived, of course by the time you will all read this, one way or another, he will have arrived. So I’m afraid you will have to wait for next month to hear our happy news (unless of course you see me pushing the pram around Whittlesey). Onto more exciting things; this issue is another bumper packed edition, with lots of local stories and activities. We also have reports on the Mayor’s Duck Race (page 8 and 9) and photographs of the Citizen of the Year award ceremony (page 7), plus news about Circuit of the Fens, a bike ride involving Whittlesey in June. Turn to page 35 for more information, and how you can get involved. There is also an interesting article on Flag Fen on page 43, plus our regular columns and features. Finally I would like to close with a special message for Kay Mayor, who, you will read in her column, will be handing over her position of Whittlesey Mayor this month. I’m sure I can speak for the majority of you when I say that she will be very sorely missed. It’s been an absolute pleasure working with Kay and she has always been nothing but kind, caring and positive about our lovely town. I know she is going to be continuing her good work in Whittlesey, but I would just like to say a big thank you to Kay for being a wonderful Mayor and for providing interesting and informative articles for the magazine. Last month I made my way to the presentation evening of some very worthy winners. At the council offices in Whittlesey, our wonderful Mayor, Kay,

opened the council meeting on the 10th of April with awards for the Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year, plus winning amateour photographers who

took part in the Whittlesey Washes in Flood competition.

Worthy Winners ur winning photographers were Mrs Denise Hall, Lesley Elding and Lauren Wells, and I couldn’t agree more that their images beautifully captured Whittlesey. It was nice to see something so positive come out from something that caused distress at the time. Thank you again to our photographer, Chris Brudenell, for donating his time and for offering the prize of a photoshoot to the winners.

Although I imagine judging the Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year must be incredibly difficult, I was in no doubt that this year’s winners were definitely very worthy. Young Citizen of the Year went to Sarah Smalley of Sir Harry Smith Community College for her volunteer work with the Papworth Trust for Disabled Children. Also awarded that evening was Daniel Flack, a year 8 student at Sir Harry Smith Community College who was recognised with an Outstanding Achievement Award for his work as a cyber mentor, helping other youngsters through difficult bullying experiences. The Citizen of the Year award went to Philip and

Jayne Bradshaw, two personal friends of mine, and who I know are more than deserving. Their countless charity fundraising evenings have raised valuable money and they are a true asset to our community. Pictured directly below: Kay Mayor with Philip and Jayne Bradshaw. The Duck Race – thank you for your support. I need to thank my Council colleagues and friends who helped sell the tickets in the very cold weeks leading up to the day and then I have to thank YOU for your support on the day. Despite the

cold wind, we did not get rain or snow that had been forecast, there was support from a huge

crowd. The winning duck, number 131 belonged to Ben Coxell; Zachary Roan’s duck number 526

was a close second and third place was claimed by duck number 486 owned by Denny Barnes.

Congratulations to you all. The proceeds of the race, £710, will go towards the Mayors Charities. It would also be very remiss of me not to thank

the Whittlesey Fire and Rescue Service, Whittlesey Streetpride Group and our four canoeists, Peter & Martin Wright, Carl Baker and Andrew Roddham

for all their help on the day.

CHRISTMAS EXTRAVAGANZA You will probably have read in the March issue of Discovering Whittlesea of the request that the mayor, Kay Mayor, made for people to help organise the Extravaganza. The Business Forum (who have always organised the event) also contacted local organisations and businesses for volunteers to attend the special meeting that was held on 20 March. I am pleased to let you know that the Christmas Extravaganza will be held as usual on the Market Place on Friday 13 December from 5.30 pm to

8.00 pm. LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREALion President has a ballWhittlesey and District Lions donated reflective vests to the local Childminders Group. This was as a result of the donations the Lions had given of vests to the local primary schools at Christmas last year. Lion President Cheryl Haynes (centre rear in ball park) said, "Our largest fund raiser is the Christmas Carol Float collection. The generosity of local people is amazing so we like to donate to local organisations such as the Whittlesey Childminders Group. We are always looking for local projects to support and for volunteers to help.” Kerrie Johnstone, Childminding Support and Development Officer from the Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years, (PACEY) attended the presentation and commented, “It was fantastic the Lions included the Registered Childminders along with schools and local nurseries, recognising the important contribution they make to their local community. The children are often out and about and this helps to keep them safe.” Lion President, Cheryl Haynes said, "Having made sure the children were kept safe whilst on projects at school, the Lions wanted to keep the children safe whilst travelling to and from school. Local Lions win District Award

Members of Whittlesey and District Lions Club attended their Annual District Convention held at the Holiday Inn-North, Norwich this weekend. On the Friday evening was Host Night where members dressed in fancy costume, the theme was "The Cawte of King James" ( The District Governor being Jim Cawte) The individual competition was won by Peter Haynes, husband of Lion President Cheryl Haynes. The Lions acted out a comic sketch they had composed set in a Crown Court. In the photograph can be seen Peter Haynes as the Judge, Cheryl Haynes (left) and Lynn Palmer (right) with Steve Palmer as the prisoner. It was very well done and poor old Steve finished up being hung drawn and courted (deliberate mistake). Cheryl also won the first time attendees competition by introducing herself to the most persons present.

What an extremely busy month it has been. Attending several Dinner Dances and one or two more yet to attend; preparing for the Duck Race which was held on a very cold Easter Monday and our own Civic Dinner Dance which was held on Friday 5 April. What can I say about the Charity Civic Dinner and Dance – it was a sell out!! One hundred and eighty six revellers enjoyed themselves and danced the night away to The Skyliners. We had a hugely successful night. The evening began with the presentation of the Citizen of the Year Trophy to Philip and Jayne Bradshaw in recognition of their fund raising support within Whittlesey for the East Anglian Air Ambulance. The raffle raised a staggering £736 and I should like to express my sincere gratitude to everyone that donated raffle prizes and gave support to the event and also to the ladies who assisted during the evening selling the raffle tickets. The auction for a party of 40 people for a Night out at the Dogs (kindly donated by Peterborough Greyhound Stadium) raised £370 and once our bills are paid for the evening and we know the final figure there will be presentations to my chosen Charities for this year; they are Whittlesey Action for Youth, Commotion Youth (for Young People with Special Needs) and Whittlesey Community Car Scheme. I do apologise to those who were unable to attend due to the restriction on numbers. Today (9 April) I went along to the Silver Lining Club at Coates to present a certificate to Gaynor Hemmaway for Outstanding Services to the Club. It was good to see so many familiar faces. More presentations will take place tomorrow prior to the Council meeting including the Young Citizen of the Year to Sarah Smalley for her voluntary work with the Papworth Trust for Disabled Children. This week we also have the Photographic Exhibition of the pictures that were entered into the Whittlesey Washes in Flood competition.Town Councillors have recently had two meetings with an officer from Cambridgeshire County Council and Balfour Beatty engineers regarding the Street Lighting renewal/replacement programme currently being rolled out throughout Cambridgeshire. No doubt many of you have seen the white markings on the footpaths and printed notices on columns. At the time of writing another meeting is scheduled to ensure that your local ward councillors are completely aware of how the programme is going to affect Whittlesey as a whole. At the moment, the villages, Coates, Eastrea, Turves and Pondersbridge have not

been included in the design programme, but the same procedure will take place when Balfour Beatty inform us that the programmes for the villages are ready. Residents will receive a letter from Balfour Beatty advising them when work is due to commence in their street(s). Please do not hesitate to contact Balfour Beatty with any concerns that you may have. We welcome Sergeant Paul Harris to Whittlesey. Paul replaces Sergeant Rob Thompson who retired from the Police force at the beginning of April. Paul came to Grosvenor House to introduce himself to me and the Town Clerk during his first week here and we have hopefully forged a good relationship which I am sure will benefit Whittlesey and the villages. You will see him out and about in Town – he’s quite tall, so I’m sure you won’t miss him. During June there will be a public consultation about the Whittlesea Station Master Plan. Look out for the dates and venues which will be advertised in the June issue of this magazine. This is another important move forward for Whittlesey. I have been asked by Steve Barclay, MP, to deliver a message about Super fast Broadband. Cambridgeshire is currently investing £45 million to provide super fast broadband coverage by the end of 2015. There are very low numbers of people registered in Fenland and therefore some communities might miss out as more of the funding is directed to the south of the county. The best fibre broadband coverage will deliver real benefits to local residents of all ages. This applies whether people are working from home, accessing public services online or for life style options such as downloading web content. Steve emphasises the need to register at www.connectingcambridgeshire.co.uk. to ensure that Fenland receives its share of the funding. FINALLY – this is it; my finale. It has been an honour and a privilege to have been your Mayor for the past two years and I should like to thank you all very sincerely for your friendship and support which I know you will continue for my successor. Friendship club for the over 50’s

onth on month for the last seven years we have reported the vast volume of litter and rubbish we clean and clear up. We consider Whittlesey and our villages to be one of the cleaner places in the area, but we know we will never be completely clear of our littering louts. Fenland District Council spend well over £1 million per annum of ratepayers money on keeping Fenland a clean place to live. Peterborough City Council spend well over £4 million for the same period and have just allocated an extra £150,000 to target bad areas.Just drive around Peterborough’s parkways or near the Amazon building to see plenty of litter.This blight on our landscape is not only unsightly, but harbours dirt and rotting material can be dangerous to both humans and animals. Our Whittlesea Street Pride volunteers will shortly be coming to another momentous occasion, when we will have removed from our streets and laybys some 30,000 Kgs of this blight in our area. More on this next month. Even though the weather has not been kind to us, we have managed some six good litter picks so far this year, resulting in well over 1,000 Kgs being removed. Recently we did a short 200 metre stretch of Ramsey Road, on the town side before the level crossing, where we found some fourteen bags and 100 Kgs of litter, bottles and paper products.

If you can identify an area which would benefit from our help, let me know, and we will do our best to address it. Maybe you could even come along and help us? All equipment is supplied. We will be holding our AGM on the 17th April and will report on it for next month’s Discovering Whittlesea. MThe Cost of Litter and Rubbish

Friendship club for the over 50’sThe Friendship club for the over 50s is held on a Saturday afternoon between 2 and 4pm, especially intended for those who possibly live on their own or who feel lonely. Meeting at Queen Street Methodist/URC Church Hall, anybody over 50 is welcome to attend for free (although a contribution of £1 a week would be appreciated to cover church expenses), and you will be treated to a cup of

something hot in the afternoon, and a cake or biscuit. The group provides the perfect place to have a game of dominos, play a board game, knit or natter amongst likeminded people. There are also opportunities to take part in the luncheon club, held bi-monthly and the occasional trip to places such as Hunstanton. • For more information about the club please contact Margaret Herstell on 01733 350628.

POLICING YOUR AREAI am writing as Area Commander for Fenland police to update you on the work and successes of my policing team over the last year. I also want to thank all those members of the community, such as yourselves, for your interest in the policing of your area. Like many industries we work to a financial year timetable in terms of performance monitoring. We have just come to the end of our year and I am very pleased to say that the crime reduction rates and crime detection rates we have achieved in Fenland are improved on last year and also the highest in Cambridgeshire! There were over 1100 fewer crimes within Fenland last year which equates to around a 19% reduction. Our crime detection rate was over 35% which is very high compared to other areas in the country and means more criminals are being brought to justice and more victims have a resolution to their crime experience. It has also made Fenland a safer place. This success has come about after we restructured into a dedicated team for the district and as such have been able to work closer and more effectively with partners within the District / Town and Parish councils, other agencies and the public alike. This joint approach, targeted at

areas that were suffering the greatest harm, and targeting those people causing the most harm, is one I intend to continue over next year. Of course there is still a lot happening, crime and anti social behaviour, that means some people are still suffering at the hands of others. This is what motivates us. Financial challenges to the police have possibly made us less visible and some may feel this means less policing, but our focused approach with the resources we have has proven to be effective in catching criminals. The increasing recognition by many people that there is a limit to what the police can do with their current funding has led to a great deal of support from volunteers, the special constabulary for instance regularly patrol the streets of Fenland and take ownership of local problems. The Community Safety Partnership has helped us tackle burglaries, vehicle crime, ASB, domestic violence and other crimes. This is a great example of how many agencies are working together to pool effort and resources in these difficult times. mission house was uppermost in the mind of the Reverend William Waller vicar of St Mary’s Church, to be built at Angle Bridge for the benefit of the community there who, it was thought, were in greater need of Christian guidance than in other regions.

The Rev. Waller himself a Governor, wrote to the Governors of the Town Revenues requesting a donation of £100 towards the project. The Governors held a special meeting to consider this request and a sum of £30 was granted. This set back to their finances did not deter the Clergy from proceeding, and the mission was duly opened in 1876, this provided a permanent base, replacing the travelling missionaries who toured the area by boat and caravan. The Mission building comprised one large room with a tortoise stove which could be lit in winter to provide some warmth. A large white cross and an altar occupied the eastern end across which a curtain was drawn when, the following year 1877 it was used as a school. The school provided basic education for the mainly agricultural worker’s children. The average class size was forty out of an annual enrolment of about twice that umber. Absenteeism was quite normal, but was accepted during the harvest and planting seasons when all the children were expected to work on the land. A school house adjacent to the mission room provided accommodation for the head teacher to whom the boys would bow and the girls curtsey as they filed into the schoolroom. One of the first entries in the school register tells of a boy who was knocked down and killed by a horse along Cock Bank. On a much brighter note, in summer there would be tea for those with a good attendance record. The Governors of the Town Revenues, perhaps with a feeling of guilt over their original

It would appear that in 1885, almost two hundred attended the annual tea held at Mr. James Row’s farm. Many were transported by barge from Ashling’s Sluice in Whittlesey. From the annual report for this year it seems that scholarly progress made was quite satisfactory although the grasp of grammar was not very good. It suggests that Knitting and sewing (for the girls presumably) should be taught. The mission room was sometimes put to use for whist drives and social events, the renowned Angle Bridge Pom-Pom Girls providing entertainment in the 1930s. The school closed in 1931 and St Steven’s Mission in 1939 and the building sold. The house has been renovated and is lived in, but the Mission Room is sadly, gradually deteriorating.

The answer is FAITH in God. In daily prayer and weekly services we pray the words of the creed. A creed is a declaration of the central teachings of the Christian way of life. These teachings relate to the nature of God and our relationship with him. At the heart of a religious life is belief in God. Christians believe in one God who has been revealed in three aspects. Classically this has been proclaimed in the language of three persons in one God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Another definition uses one God, Creator, Saviour and Sanctifier. This sounds complicated and it is. After all what we are trying to do is define the nature of God using the language and ideas of our human experience. It is an exercise of the mind which in one sense is bound to fail and in another is going to succeed but only in part. God is a big idea for our minds to get around. But, remember we are God’s creation. Our human nature is programmed for us to know the divine nature, if not fully then certainly in part. Please take some time to consider the following short creed:

We believe in GodThe Father, the Creator, Maker and Sustainer of all, Not just our earth and solar system but the whole

Universe, God the origin of all matter.

The Son, our Redeemer, our Saviour from sin and judgement.

What lies at the heart of Church membership? What is it that inspires people to live according to the teachings of Jesus? The teachings contained in the Gospels and the other books of the New Testament?

Anglers across the fens will be eagerly awaiting the start of a new fishing season on the 16th June, but for now will still be looking at our local stillwaters for a spot of pleasure or match fishing action. The prolonged winter months have not been kind to anglers that enjoy a spot of spring fishing, snow in late March and early April ensured that sport was nowhere near as good as it usually is at this time of year. But into May we should see a marked improvement with some good fish being taken off the top. Railway Lakes suffered like most through the cold spell at the start of the year but should now be in full swing. The big, deep lake has been a real winner for Tony and Paul Hudson who run the fishery. Carp to 30lb-plus were taken last year and there is talk of several even bigger samples. It is a water where boilies are allowed and you will need big baits to tempt these monsters of the deep, although surface baits can also score well here.

The smaller, shallow pool will be the one for you if you like plenty of bites, full of features and fish and all manner of methods work well. Contact Tony for full details on 01733 203428.To get there, head out of Whittlesey on the back road towards Benwick, after crossing the railway line look for a small garden centre on the left hand side. Turn left next to it, drive down to the bottom of the road, turning right at the fence and carry on to the car park.If you are off fishing then now is the time to get your new rod licence, even if you will be fishing private waters you should still be in possession of a current rod licence. The new licence started on the 1st April 2013. There will be quite a few anglers caught out over the next few weeks as the Environment Agency water bailiffs do their rounds with our local stillwaters their main targets. At first glance you may think that they are a little expensive but when you work it out per week it is not too bad a price to pay.

A word fromI know this Easter is now history, but maybe now is the ideal time to review what we think. As I prepared for our Easter Celebration I found myself asking the question ‘why would anyone choose to be crucified?’ While it is true that the lands conquered by Rome enjoyed a high level of peace, prosperity and security; it is also true that one of their methods of punishment to achieve this was described by one historian as ‘being barbaric, horrendous and sadistic’. I am of course referring to crucifixion. Depending on the severity of the crime or attitude of Rome to the criminal, their wrists were either tied or nailed to the horizontal bar of the cross while their feet were nailed to a small platform part way down the vertical support of the cross; this helped them to breathe by pushing their body up, and forestalled the inevitable moment of death. If the soldiers thought death was taking too long they would take a hammer and break their legs, making it excruciatingly painful to push upwards, this assured death by suffocation came quickly. Still thinking about my question, I recalled a large painting which hung in the Sunday School room of the church my parents attended. It vividly depicted Christ with a crown of thorns on his head, nail holes in his wrist and feet, a caption read ‘all this I have done for you what have you done for me?’

A word fromCllr Martin CurtisI really enjoy elections, for a politician they are your meat and drink. They are the ultimate comment on your own performance and on the message you send to the people you serve. They are also a great way of challenging your own thinking and understanding of ideas. That said, there are some things that I find very frustrating, especially in local elections where perfectly good candidates and Councillors often find themselves cast adrift because people vote based on a view of National Politics. Whilst National issues are always relevant, the media drum them up as the most important factor, not because they are, but because that is what writes their headlines. This has also led to a growing number of parties that put up local candidates based primarily on National issues.The truth is at a County Council election you are voting for a candidate and a local party that will have huge responsibility. Without including schools funding, the County Council spends around £500m a year. The Adult Social Care portfolio that I am currently responsible for as a Cabinet Member has a budget of £190m alone. On top of this, local councillors are your most immediate point of contact for issues many people really care about - refuse collection, care for vulnerable people, road maintenance, infrastructure improvements etc.

Why would you risk a move to poor local services because someone tells you that voting for them will change a National policy? I can tell you with some certainty that it won’t. This is different for a General Election (although having an MP that takes constituency issues seriously is also vital and we are lucky to have one in Stephen Barclay).Of course, we live in a free country where people can vote how they wish and I would not want anyone to do anything else - that is why I have deliberately avoided talking about what I stand for here, But I would please urge you to look closely at your candidates on 2nd May and think about who offers most for you locally rather than what promises people and parties make about National issues. Although I ultimately walked away from anything to do with belief in God because I wrongly assumed that if He existed at all, He was certainly irrelevant to my life, I could never get this painting out of my head. A number of years later I went to church in order to win a bet, I certainly had no intention of my life taking the turn it did. I have never forgotten the general thrust of the preacher’s message, it was all about what it cost Jesus to prove how much God cared for us, but how we often take that for granted or choose to totally ignore it. Suddenly, there it was again, that painting and the caption underneath it. It’s not too late to do something with your life for God. SIMON’S RECIPE OF

THE MONTH

Simon Norris,J Jones Butchers“ ”

A quick and easy Thai Green curry, for any night of the week.

Be creative and add different vegetables, or just keep it simple.

Thai Green Curry

Ingredients:2 tbsp vegetable oil

1-2 tbsp green curry paste 1 tbsp dark brown sugar

1 clove Garlic 1 red pepper, diced

2 cm piece ginger roughly chopped 800 g boneless, skinless chicken thigh meat

roughly chopped 400 ml coconut milk 1 tsp dark Soy Sauce

1 handfull chopped coriander Juice of a Lime

Instructions:

1. Heat the oil in a wok and add the curry paste and sugar. Cook over a medium heat, stirring

constantly until the sugar has dissolved. Add the garlic, red pepper and ginger.

2. Brown the chicken thighs in the wok, then stir in the coconut milk, soy sauce and coriander. Place the lid on and allow to simmer under a

low heat for 25-30 minutes. 3. Squeeze in the lime juice to taste.

4. Serve the curry with basmati rice and a sprinkling of chopped coriander.

Why muscles seize up? By Mayur Mistry & Ubhi Varsani (Registered Osteopaths)On many occasions in the clinic room we hear variations of the phrase “my muscles have seized up”. The question is how do muscles seize up? Well, read on to find out.Muscles are like soldiers, they do what they are told without question. This is important because a slight hesitation could mean the differences between catching a swing door and having a big bruise on your face! The command chain is shown in fig 1. If the brain wants something done, it transmits a signal down the spinalcord which in turn relays the message to the nerves, which tell the muscles to contract. The muscular contraction moves the joint and completes the action. The muscles & joints work together thus alternating who commands the other. I.e. in the example above the muscles are telling the joint to move (muscles are in command) however if the joint feels it is being pulled too hard or fast it will command the muscles to relax (the joint is in command).

A muscle seizure is essentially a prolonged muscular contraction. They cause pain because:1 – The muscles get tired holding the contraction,2 – The muscle contractions squeezes the veins running through them thus irritating the local pain nerves. From the command chain we know muscles respond to authority. Therefore a muscle seizure is the fault of one of these authorities and not the muscle itself. Below are some examples of this:

Brain Mental Stress The brain responds to stress by preparing the body for action. One step is for the muscles to be placed on high alert, i.e. held slightly contracted. If stress is prolonged (i.e. days, weeks, or even months) the muscles tire leading to seizure.

Spinal Cord Slipped disc A slipped disc can push against the spinal cord causing the nerves in the vicinity to fire erroneously. If these nerves supply certain muscles they will respond to the erroneous signals by contracting. Again this leads to a prolonged contractions and hence seizure.

Joints Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis

An impact can mildly damage a nerve causing swelling in the nerve itself. The nerve responds to this swelling by (you guessed it) firing erroneously. The muscles downwind contract in response to these signals leading to muscular seizure.

A fall / impact

If the joints themselves are irritated, they tell the local muscles to contract thus reducing their movement and allowing them to heal. If the healing time is greater than a few days the muscles will tire and hence lead to seizure.

It is for this reason that osteopaths rarely work on just the irritated muscle. I.e. the muscle is not the problem, it is just the victim!

Circuit of the FensPart of the Whittlesey Cycling Day

Sunday 16th of June 2013 Start: 12h00 Organised and promoted by Anglia Cycling & St Ives Cycling Club

The “Circuit of the Fens” is a ‘National A’ category race and will be promoted under British Cycling's Technical Regulations. The race, which will take place on Sunday 16th June, has been scheduled to slot into the national racing calendar after the Halfords' Tour Series finishes on Friday 14th and the Sunday before British Cycling's National Championships on the 23rd. Britain's top teams will again be represented in the Tour Series with the last two events conveniently taking place in Aylesham, Norfolk and Ipswich, Suffolk. Many of the teams are planning to remain in East Anglia in readiness for our race at Whittlesey on Sunday. The “Circuit of the Fens” will be the longest single day road race on the British domestic calendar in 2013. The distance of some 200km will provide the riders with a real opportunity to prepare for the National Championship race in Glasgow the following Sunday. Starting and finishing in Whittlesey town centre, the race will be unique insofar as the course will be totally flat. Instead the wide open roads will leave the riders completely exposed to the renowned fenland winds. Thanks to support from Cambridgeshire Highways and Police, the riders will have a clear road for the race. The whole on-the-road spectacle: the riders, official cars, service vehicles and race sponsors' vehicles will make an impressive sight both for seasoned race followers and local residents.The course for the Elite race will consist of an initial 'big circuit' of some 27km which the riders will cover almost 6 times. The route will then divert onto a narrow stretch of concrete farm road, worse for wear in some places, which will lead the race back via Decoy Lakes into Whittlesey and Market Place to commence the finishing circuit, which will consist of a 4km loop around the town centre, covered 6 times. The supporting 'Amateur' race, starting at 12h15 will cover 4 laps of the 'big circuit' before returning to Whittlesey town centre - but will not use the finishing circuit. Whilst the racing cyclists are battling it out

across the fens, it is planned to stage a number of supporting events, both competitive and non-competitive in the town centre:• Family/Leisure Cycle Ride • Cycle Maintenance Clinic • Cycle Jumble • 'Go-Ride' event for local youngsters • BMX demonstration • 'Come-and-try-it' roller session • Refreshment stalls including a 'hog roast' A dedicated website is now being prepared and will be linked to regular Facebook and Twitter reports. Directed and written by the infamous Quentin Tarantino, Django Unchained stars Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L Jackson and Leonardo DiCaprio and in short tells the tale of a freed slave who sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner with the help of a German bounty hunter. But anyone who has seen a Tarantino film will know that there is much more to his films than just a basic storyline.

Based in 1858, this brilliant and brutal revenge western is an exciting return to form for Tarantino, where slavery is explored through some brilliantly casted actors such as Samuel L Jackson as Stephen, the servant to DiCaprio’s unspeakable slave-owner Calvin Candie.

Foxx plays Django, a slave who is being led across Texas in a chain gang, when his master meets Dr King Schultz, a German played by Waltz. Claiming to be a travelling dentist, Schultz is driving a bizarre wagon with a huge model of a molar on the top. He buys Django and promises him his freedom in return for a favour: he needs Django to help him track three white slave-overseers with whom he has business. Django proves himself an able assistant and a brilliant gunfighter and Schultz is electrified to learn that Django is married to a woman (Kerry Washington) whose German owners taught her the German language and named her Brünnhilde. She was spitefully sold off separately because she, like Django, was always defiantly running away. Now she has been branded on the face as a punishment and forced to work as a “comfort” girl. Schultz vows to help Django find Broomhilda and wreak terrible vengeance on the people who mistreated her.

There are moments of pure directorial mastery, and although it is a long film at two hours and 45 minutes, Django relaxes and luxuriates in its long form, balancing deadpan moments of awe and reverence for the landscape, combined with tension and violence. And is a film not to be missed this month.

Ladysmith W.I.The last meeting of Ladysmith W.I. was a really tasty affair when Karen Brummer from The Cheese Cellar in Stamford brought along a selection of artisan British cheeses for members to taste (including a Cornish Yarg which is wrapped in nettles) and gave us advice on storing and enjoying. We didn't realise that there are more than one thousand accredited British cheeses, so

we still have plenty left to try!Our lunch outing in May is to Thorpe Hall to support the fund raising for the new Sue Ryder hospice. On 14th May Sue Walfare, whose specialist craft is Ragwork, will show members how to make a flower and the competition is for a recycled or rag item. Having worked in childcare for my whole career, it was actually one of the city council’s social workers who suggested George and I consider fostering,” Jenny said.

Could you spare just a couple of hours once a month to go to the cinema

and change someone’s life? Cambridgeshire Mencap, a local learning disability

charity, needs new volunteers to support its successful and growing befriending scheme.

T he befriending scheme started in Fenland 12 years ago and continues to grow. There are 20 adults matched with volunteer befrienders who each go out once a month for a couple of hours.

Vanessa Droy, Befriending Scheme Co-ordinator said “We are receiving more referrals than ever and currently have a growing waiting list of adults that would love to have a friend to go out and take part in all sorts of activities from going for a cuppa and a chat, playing snooker to going for a bite to eat, trips to the cinema and much more.”

Having a befriender helps to encourage someone with a learning disability to make friends and spend time with new people which really helps to build their independence, confidence and life skills. The befriending scheme also helps to provide a break from their parents or carers.

Cambridgeshire Mencap offers full reimbursement of all travel and out of pocket expenses, a comprehensive training package, regular volunteer socials and lots of appreciation. Volunteers are matched based on similar interests, age and location. Befriending is flexible with no set days and times so it can fit around work and home commitments; with friends going out in the daytime, evenings or at weekends.

Jane has been volunteering with Cambridgeshire Mencap for over 2 years, Jane said “To anyone considering becoming

a volunteer, I would say go for it! You have nothing to lose and so much to gain from doing something worthwhile. There is so much help available for volunteers who, like me, had never done this kind of thing before and may be a little apprehensive. You don’t have to do anything grand to make someone’s life happier, and the reward is the smile on their face!”
