t snowed on my birthday! Not only did this make my birthday even more wonderful, but it meant that Chris and I had chosen the most perfect front cover for our February issue. Although it meant I had to put my running shoes in the cupboard for a few days, I was glad to see a bit of real winter. Now March is just around the corner, I am ready for some Spring weather.Plans for the Queen's Jubilee are hotting up, and we are very pleased to be working with organisers to keep you updated with the latest news and events. This issue we bring you news on how you can enter your children into the

competition to be our Prince and Princess for the weekends festivities (see page 7). A venue has now been set for the Jubilee Party, see page 15 for more information on this. Over the past few months, we have all heard to seen first hand, the disruption caused by burst water pipes in our town. Anglian Water contacted us to issue an apology, see page 15. Oh Ye Oh Ye Oh Ye

The Whittlesey Lights Committee are calling for new members with ideas for fund raising. Whilst the erection of the lights is already sorted, the group rely on fund raising and donations from various bodies to purchase new lights, maintain the old ones and in some cases to power the lights. Some shopkeepers are very supportive and power the lights from their own buildings, but buying the Christmas tree and bulbs is very costly, as is paying for the erection of the lights.

The committee meet regularly, although not on a specific day or date, at the Town Hall in Whittlesey and we would really welcome some new, enthusiastic members. If you are interested in offering your time and support, then please contact Janet Clark on 01733 208669.

Whittlesey Country Wine Club are looking for new members who are always welcome. It is a local friendly club with some members who take part in wine and beer shows winning many prizes. The group meet on the third Thursday of the month at St Johns’ Hall, Plough Road, Whittlesey.

The club have broad horizons, which include other activities, and interests. Most members come to take part in the social side of the club for such things as Sunday lunches, Pentanque with a BBQ, and many other activities. Membership is £4 a year and there is no charge for the usual club nights unless an expensive speaker is used, and there is no need to be a wine or beer-maker to enjoy being a member of the club.

Whittlesey Country Wine Club are hosting the Central Counties Federation inter-circle competition on Thursday 17th May, this is where local clubs join the group and there will be a quiz or games evening with supper, while the wine & beer is being judged.

Street Pride UpdateOur second litterpick of 2012 at Morton’s Leam bridge on the Thorney Road went extremely well with an excellent turn out of 13 hardy members on a cold frosty morning We managed to fill 14 bags with rubbish, collect 8 wheels and tyres, the contents of someone’s living room that had been fly tipped. Our third litterpick of 2012 was at Kings Delph on the A605, as usual we managed to remove in excess of 300 kgs of rubbish and fly tipping, tyres etc. There remains lots of rubbish that needs removing and a revisit to clear further litter in the early part of the year will be scheduled.We have such an excellent waste recycling facility in New Road Whittlesey, and the staff are very helpful to assist in the recycling process, or with heavy items that are difficult to get up the skip stairs.Our fourth litterpick of 2012 at Ramsey Road layby was cancelled due to the bad weather, it was minus 11 on the morning and very foggy, with compacted ice still at the meeting point. By the time you read this, our February bimonthly meeting will have taken place, we will have discussed and presented the plans for the Plough Lane, plough garden and have agreed a name for the flower boat to be placed on the A605 green opposite the water tower, agreed future litterpicks. Although there is little maintenance/grass cutting carried out at this time of year, the ongoing planting plans, litterpicks, work on the plough, boat and Jubilee benches for Ramsey Road will consume the majority of our members time, keeping us extremely busy. Primary pupils visit Palace of WestminsterChildren and staff from Coates Primary School visited London last month for a tour of Parliament organised by local MP Stephen Barclay.

The 32 year five and six pupils left school early on a Friday morning to meet with Mr Barclay’s assistant who talked to them about life as an MP. The children were given the opportunity to raise questions about local issues and make their own laws before receiving a tour of the building.

Sarah Johnston, Year 6 teacher, who accompanied the children on the tour said:

“We were so lucky to be invited to meet Mr Barclay’s assistant and to be given such a wonderful tour around the Houses of Parliament.”

When the children arrived in London they were taken to Portcullis House, where they were escorted to the Houses of Parliament. Their tour began in Westminster Hall, the place where King Charles I and Guy Fawkes were sentenced to death. After that, the children had a tour of both the House of Commons and House of lords. Here they learned about the process of turning a Bill into a Law, and the rules and traditions that surround British Law Making.

"I am delighted that Parliament was able to welcome students from Years 5 and 6 from Coates Primary School last week. I am pleased that these students had an opportunity to see the wonderfully historic workplace that the House of Commons is, and to learn about the fascinating Parliamentary procedure that we as MPs have to run our lives by!"

24 hour bike ride for Sport Relief

Students and teachers at Sir Harry Smith Community College are planning to hold a 24-hour sponsored bike ride, using the P.E department’s exercise bikes in the Sixth Form block.

The ambitious plans have been organised to raise as much money for Sport Relief. In total there will be seven teams, one from each year group, and a staff/governor team.

The great bike ride will begin at 4pm on Friday 23rd of March and will finish at 4pm on Saturday 24th of March. Each team will have a bike and those involved will take it in turns, ensuring that somebody is riding at all times.

This ambitious event has been organised by the school and its students, and we would like to wish them lots of luck in raising money for Sport Relief.

Malcolm Busby ‘s talk on” Fairy Tales as you have never heard them” was based on the original Grimms

Fairy Tales. Plans were also discussed for the Summer Fete to be held on Saturday 23rd June.

The first snow of this winter arrived in vengeance last night - Saturday 4th February – I’ve started to write this article looking out at a blanket of white and actually wondering whether to venture out or not. More snow fell on 9th February and we endured the coldest night of the winter with temperatures of minus 16 degrees. Brrrr...... !! I do hope that you managed to keep warm and those of you that are able made sure that elderly neighbours were OK. I know children enjoy the snow but I’m afraid I’m a sunshine person despite being born in December.

Once again, on Monday 30 January, Whittlesey was the victim of a burst water main; the third major burst in two months. The burst was again in the Kings Dyke area. Although we didn’t have to suffer the loss of water for the whole of the Town as we did at the end of November, this burst was far more severe and has had very unpleasant repercussions for some of the residents in that area. Those residents that have suffered damage to their homes have been offered accommodation and help, which will be paid for by Anglian Water, whilst their homes are renovated. I would like to place on record our thanks to Biffa Waste of Whittlesey for offering skips free of charge to these residents to enable bulky items of furniture that have been ruined to be removed; this is true community spirit. This latest burst however does raise the question about the infrastructure serving the Town. Anglian Water Officers had a meeting with Community leaders on Wednesday 8 February to avail us of the situation. We appreciate that Anglian Water is doing everything possible to support the families that have been affected and to keep local Councillors up to date of the situation.

Pete Sennett has been busy in Eastrea again. On a cold Tuesday January morning (31st) Ken & I went along to unfasten the ribbon on a beautiful bench that has been installed on the Memorial Corner on Wype Road. This seat has been donated with funds raised by Richard Hargrave the Landlord/Manager at the Nags Head Public House during a sponsored slimathon!! The customers and villagers chipped in to sponsor Richard and he raised £400 which he generously gave to Pete to enable the seat to be purchased and erected on the site. Thank you Richard for your generosity. Pete installed the seat (with a plaque indicating who “sponsored” it). Several villagers came along to the ceremony despite the weather. Thanks again Pete.

As a sign of recognition and appreciation by the Royal British Legion Pete was awarded the Member of the Year shield for his work in the Memorial Garden at Eastrea at the RBL Annual Dinner and Dance held on Friday 10 February. Congratulations Pete.

The “season” of Mayor’s Charity Ball’s/Dinner Dances/Civic Receptions is in full swing; Ken & I are representing Whittlesey whenever possible.

When you read this, the Town Council will have closed its nominations for 2012’s Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year award. I cannot tell you who has won because this will not be revealed until the Town Council meeting on 14 March. We have had some really worthy winners in the past and I can’t wait to find out who the winners are this year. It would be good if you know someone who deserves this honour to remember next year to nominate them.

Following on from our own Straw Bear Festival in January when we were joined by the Straw Bear from Walldürn in Germany, I know that some of the Whittlesey Straw Bearers will be visiting Walldürn later in February to take part in its Festival. I gave a letter to them to take to the Bügermeister of Walldürn as a token of friendship from our Town. I’m sure they will have some fascinating stories to share with us on their return.

People have started asking what we are doing in Whittlesey for the Diamond Jubilee. Discovering Whittlesey and the local press will be advertising the events being arranged for the Celebrations; the main event will be on Monday 4 June at the Manor Centre, Station Road; it is a Bank Holiday and the schools will be on half term so we look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible. Look out for the publicity.

On the afternoon of Monday June 4th Whittlesey Town Council is organising a Jubilee Party at the Manor Leisure Centre. During the afternoon we are inviting people, groups and societies to come and show off what they do for all to see. We then invite people to stay on to watch the evening go with a bang as local bands play into the evening.

We will be celebrating 60 years of the Queens reign and to focus the mind we are asking stall holders to work one of the following themes into their displays • The Queen (and HRH Prince Philip) – Hi-lighting their majesty’s achievements • 1952/2012 – Past and Present, tying together then and now e.g. Make do and mend (rationing related ideas relevant in a recession)• Youth – Future, youth clubs and societies etc • Food and Food production to complement the Heritage Food Festival.

Whether you are dressing up to fundraise with a Teddy Boy Tombola or showing off your creative skills to hi-light the rationing and make do and mend mentality of the early 1950’s we hope that you will join us in the spirit of what we hope will be a fun day. We will be clustering stalls together on the day by which theme they are supporting to create a fun day for all. There will also be acts on the outdoor stage throughout the day.

Additionally the Manor’s main hall has recently been refurbished to include an indoor marquee, bar and kitchen for events, weddings and parties; so dressed in its finery the main hall will be hosting a wedding and party fayre.

To raise funds we will be holding a Duck race on the river on Bank Holiday Monday, 7th May with ducks costing £1 each and prizes of £50, £25 and £10 for first, second and third. The race will begin from the Hero of Aliwal Car Park on Ramsey Road. Tickets are available from the Town Council Offices and other outlets around the town.

Anglian Water an apology

Over the last few months, you will be aware that Anglian Water has been dealing with several issues in and around Whittlesey. The latest of these incidents occurred in January, when a burst main in Kings Dyke flooded several houses.

Anglian Water would like to take this opportunity to apologise to the residents of Whittlesey and the surrounding areas who have been affected by these incidents. We know that this is not the level of service that you expect from your water company, and we'd like to reassure you that we've done all we can to minimise the chance of anything like this happening again. With over 40,000km of water main buried under the ground, not to mention over 70,000km of sewer pipes, it's simply not possible to say with certainty that something like this won't happen again - but we can say that we'll do everything we can to reduce the risk.

We've carried out an extensive investigation into the causes of these bursts. The reality is that it is very difficult to be sure why bursts like this occur. There are a combination of factors that may contribute to bursts occurring - things like heavy traffic on the roads above, changes in weather conditions and the amount of moisture in the ground causing movements in the soil around our pipes. All of these may well be contributory factors, and it may be that a combination of them - in particular, ground movement following the particularly dry weather we experienced in 2011 - are the cause.

We have also made some adjustments to the way water flows into the network to protect the pipes in Whittlesey from the natural fluctuations in water pressure that occur in a network of this size. We asked to meet with representatives of Whittlesey Town Council, Corporate Director of Fenland District Council and a Senior Parliamentary Assistant to Steve Barclay MP, Member of Parliament for North East Cambridgeshire to explain these changes shortly after the latest incident, and to give you all reassurance that we were doing all that we could. We are grateful for the time of the Councillors.

Once again, please accept our sincere apologies for the interruptions to your water supply, and for any inconvenience that will have been caused while we were repairing the damaged mains.

Sorry to the technophobes about this month’s comments, but Social media is an area of growing importance for me as a Councillor, so I thought I would comment on it this month. Not least because there have been one or two comments this month about celebrities choosing to stop using Twitter because of abuse. I have to say, as a Councillor, I have had one or two quite challenging comments made about me on Twitter. I don’t like them, but I choose to put up with that because of the bigger benefits of Twitter . As a Councillor it is really difficult to communicate, the traditional method – leaflets - is sometimes useful, but it is surprising how little impact it makes and it takes a great deal of time. For this reason I choose to use Twitter, my blog and this column to raise political issues – about Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire and the wider world, but also try to use Twitter to show people that behind the blue rosette is a real person; so I often raise other issues, such as my love of rock music and the mighty Arsenal Football Club. As a communication tool Twitter can be second-to-none. As an example I was able to use it recently to pass on

quick updates about the water mains problems we had and to provide updates about whether our schools were open during the recent snow (and well done to all of them for staying open). Local History

he end of the Floating Church in Holme Fen came quite suddenly. The reasons were fourfold, being the loss of interest by the parishioners, the expense of keeping it afloat, the deterioration in the Reverend Broke’s health and, strangely, a demand for it’s services elsewhere in the Diocese.

In 1904, the Reverend Guy, vicar of Manea inspected the church, which met his approval, and he had it taken 14 miles from Stokes Bridge to Welches Dam. Passing along the Old Course of the Nene and the Forty Foot River to enter the Old Bedford River at Welches Dam Lock thereby ending it’s seven and a half years service in Holme Fen.

It was to serve three settlements along a four mile stretch of river which had no Parish Church or resident vicar. These settlements were at Welches Dam, Purls Bridge and The Colony, the later being the settlements left of the Manea Community Colony of the 18th century. It seems that in 1906 the church was having problems and the Reverend Guy contacted the Reverend Broke to say that he was sending it back!!! It duly arrived in a very dilapidated state and it was estimated that £25 needed to be spent on it to make it sound, and then for what purpose?

Not having sufficient funds, nor the inclination to repair the church, the reverend Broke decided to sell it to Mr G Langley for £5, but before the transaction could take place, Mr Langley died and his widow, being in debt was unable to raise the money required. The organ and all furniture was removed to the vicarage in Holme and at this time with all the furniture and fitting removed it had ceased to be a church. It was returned to William Starling’s boatyard at Stanground to be broken up, but before this could happen it was purchased by a group of young men who fitted it out as a houseboat. The last voyage it made was from Stanground to permanent moorings at Ham Farm, Orton and was renamed ‘The Saints Rest’ and used for enjoyment for five or six years until during

severe flooding in 1912 the houseboat sank and was never used again.

There is a plaque at Chapel Bridge at the East end of Glassmoor Bank which states that……’ at one time a barge converted to a chapel provided visiting church services’ implying that this is why Chaple Bridge is so named, but this cannot be right on three counts. Firstly, the Floating Church, being dedicated to St. Withburga and allied to the Church of England parish church at Holme, was never referred to a a Chapel. Secondly, during it’s time in Holme Fen, it was used on the Old Course of the Nene and Hook’s Lode to move between its three stations. Moving it to Welches Dam again used the Old Course of the Nene and the Forty Foot river so it never went anywhere near Bevil’s Leam which is spanned by Chapel Bridge. Thirdly records show that the bridge was being referred to as Chapel Bridge in 1829 some sixty eight years before the Floating Church came into being.

This then poses another question. Where was the Chapel after which, presumably, the bridge was named?

Policing your areaby Andy Holliday Since my last report your local neighbourhood policing team have stopped several persons and whilst doing so have made several cannabis seizures and those persons have received both cautions and one received an £80.00 fixed penalty notice. Traffic officers who were pursuing a vehicle which had failed to stop

in Stanground and was coming into Whittlesey momentarily lost sight of the vehicle. Whilst conducting an area search for the vehicle they saw a vehicle parked up at McCains foods. When officers spoke to the two males and searched the vehicle 20 full five gallon drums of diesel and siphoning equipment were found. Both males were subsequently arrested. When one of the officers noticed that one of the males was trying to hide a set of keys to another vehicle that was located at the Hanson’s yard. The vehicle that was parked up at Hanson’s was actually the vehicle that had failed to stop previously for the officers.A further 150 full five gallon drums was found with this vehicle and a further 100 empty five gallon drums was located next to a van that was parked up at the site. I am pleased to say that after an extensive area search around the site a further 50 five gallon drums were full

and placed next to the lorries that was parked up in the Hanson’s yard. This was an excellent example of how your local policing team receives support from other officers when not on duty. On 1st February 2012 there was a neighbourhood forum held at the Coates village hall. Unfortunately numbers were quite low possibly as a result of the harsh weather conditions however I would like to thank the people who were able to attend the meeting and raise their concerns. For the first time in my service there was only one policing priority set which was anti-social behaviour in the St Mary’s ward and town centre. Your local policing team will look closely at this priority over the next 3 months to try and reduce the number of calls for service and the number of people that may potentially become a victim of anti-social behaviour.

The last few weeks of the fishing season on our Fenland drains seems to have gone by very quickly. The cold snap in early February did stop the action for a while, but it did not take that long to get back into the swing of things. The ever reliable Whittlesey Dyke proved as popular and as productive as ever with quite a few of our local anglers taking advantage of some excellent roach fishing. A little further afield the Whittlesey Twenty Foot Drain and Ponders Bridge up stream both produced some cracking pike fishing for those using lures and spinners as well as dead baits.Once the season ends on drains, rivers and canals on the 14th of March then its time to turn our attention to the many local stillwaters we have very close to Whittlesey. We have some wonderful fisheries right on our doorstep and already they are starting to fish well. The colder weather is never conducive to carp fishing but now is the time to give them a try, you would be very unlucky not to catch.Railway Lakes at the back of the town centre will once again attract many locals, the deeper of the two lakes on the complex holds a big head of carp well over double figures and run to 20lb plus, while the smaller, shallow pool is an ideal water for just about everyone that enjoys catching fish of all sizes.There are three lakes to try at Kingsland Fishery,

one holds a good head of silver fish while the other two are full of hard fighting carp, try a small Method feeder for the carp here, it often takes a lot of fish early in the year.There is a huge choice of waters to choose from at the Northey Park Fishery, again there seems to be something for everyone here and well worth a visit if you enjoy a bit of peace and quiet while fishing.Biggest and some would say the best of our local fisheries is Decoy Lakes, through the summer months its gets very busy indeed, a sure sign anglers catch a lot of fish here particularly in matches, big and small. There is nearly always room for pleasure anglers too though, midweek is best but even at weekends you can still find pegs to fish.

Well, it is a subtle and gentle approach aimed at the whole body (not just the head as the name implies). Cranial osteopathy is a treatment approach used by osteopaths to address an underlying subtle rhythmical pattern that is present within our bodies, we [as osteopaths] term this the cranial rhythm.

The movement is of small amplitude, therefore it takes practitioners with a finely developed sense of touch to feel it. The rhythm is normally very regular and symmetrical, however is altered during body dysfunction.

To illustrate, let’s look at an example:“Imagine X falls from a height onto their buttocks at 6yrs. X fully recovers but unbeknown to them they are carrying strains in their spine and skull. At age 20, X has a car accident, sustaining a whiplash injury. As all car accidents put enormous strains on the body, this adds to the existing strain from their fall as a child. At age 30, X is spending long periods sitting in an awkward position at work, again straining their spine. Now the body can no longer cope and X begins to develop headaches and back pain. X decides to consult an osteopath who determines, from the altered cranial rhythm, that X had suffered previous trauma.”

Osteopaths look to release

these strains by working with the cranial rhythm, trying to bring it back to a more regular and symmetrical pattern. The subtle gentle approach makes it safe to use with babies as well as adults and children.

he “Twilight” saga reaches a high pitch in the first half of concluding volume “Breaking Dawn,” which includes a wedding, pregnancy and a major transformation for a major character. As a big fan of the first three films, I came to Breaking Dawn Part One with high expectation. Whilst some critics have been rather harsh, criticising makers for cashing in on the lucrative franchise, like the Harry Potter films, I did not share their opinions. Yes, it does take itself rather seriously, but that is part of its charm. Once again we are pulled into the exciting, and dangerous, world of Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) as love is tested to it’s very most. Following right on from last year’s The Twilight Saga: Eclipse the film opens with a beautifully staged wedding ceremony – as our two lovers finally get to seal their love for each other. Underlying their happiness however, is the love Jacob (Tayloe Lautner) feels for Bella. This is a continuing theme as Bella discovers she is pregnant, and is once again in danger with the looming threat of the werewolf clan, and her own unborn child. This fourth film in the series offers the same amount of drama, excitement, and emotional turmoil as the previous ones, and is not to be missed if you, like me, are a big fan.
