eptember already! We’ll soon be talking about Christmas, well it is only a few months away... But before we do, we have the small matter of the wonderful Whittlesey Festival to enjoy. We’ve been keeping you updated with the very latest each month, and this issue is our final chance to tell you all about it before the day itself. So make sure you keep Sunday 7th September free and pay a visit to see all those lovely cars, stalls and children’s activities. The very latest information on what you can expect to see is on page 66. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for some beautiful late summer sun. Over recent months, I have been approached by various different local residents who have been saddened and disappointed by fly-tipping in, and around, Whittlesey. Our wonderful local Town Council agreed that it was time we highlighted the many recycling facilities we have at our disposal, in the hopes that the relatively small minority of those who carelessly throw their rubbish on our streets and in our fields, might think again. You can learn all about our local recycling facilities on page 12. There are a couple of important meetings to note in your diary this month. If you’re curious about Whittlesey Country Park, there is a meeting open to the public on the 1st of September. Those of you who opposed the proposed development of land North of Whittlesey and East of East Delph, will find that the date for the appeal inquiry in Whittleset is now the 24th of September. Full details of both are on page 8. Finally, please note that I now have a new email address, emails sent to my old email address might be lost, so please ensure you send them to: [email protected] (many of you will be relieved, as my old email address was temperamental, to say the least!) As for me, I’m looking forward to a family holiday, here’s hoping the next intro page picture will be a sunny, seaside scene...

During this period when our local pub, The Nag’s Head, has been closed at various times, we have kept going by meeting at The Vine at Coates and The Three Horseshoes at Turves,who both came to our rescue. Volunteers Needed for Local Charity

s a Befriender at Eddie’s, you will provide vital one-to-one support to an adult with a learning disability by helping them to engage in activities they enjoy. From organising a trip to the cinema to participating in a Zumba session, Befrienders help build their friend’s confidence, social skills and sense of independence. This Befriending Scheme is a vital part of the work done by Eddie’s in helping adults with a learning disability enjoy life as much as possible. The direct interaction between the Befriender and the adult they are matched with allows a strong bond to develop as trust and understanding grows between each pair. This in turn encourages the friend to interact with other people and develop their social and communication skills. Befrienders can arrange activities such as meeting up for lunch, going shopping or anything that the pair can enjoy together. Additionally, they can participate in one of Eddie’s own regular activity sessions which can include barbeques, picnics and discos. The Scheme carefully matches volunteers, based on location and personality, and encourages each pair to meet at least once a month. The ability to drive and have access to a car is preferred as the Scheme operates in and around March, Wisbech, Whittlesey, Chatteris and now Ely. Travel and activity costs will be reimbursed by Eddie’s. Jo and Tommy Kelly have been a befriender with Eddie’s for almost 4 years and in this time they have developed a great friendship with Stephen. Jo and Tommy said, “The Befriending Scheme allows and encourages people to meet to enjoy common interests and share fun times

in a safe, controlled but flexible way. We very quickly became friends with Stephen and have a great relationship with him. We felt very early on that our friendship was as natural as any other and the Befriending Scheme was simply the initial facilitator in this although we know if we need any help or guidance that support is only a phone call or email away.” Volunteer Befrienders do not need any previous experience as full training will be given including; learning disability awareness, autism and makaton training to name but a few. You will also gain invaluable experience within the care sector which would be essential if this was a career path you were interested in. As recognition of your commitment and success, you could also receive a reference from the Volunteers Support Coordinator to help with future volunteering or employment.

Focus on Recycling and FlytippingRecently both Whittlesey Town Council and Discovering Whittlesea have been contacted by residents of Whittlesey and the surrounding villages regarding the fly tipping that seems to be popping up in and around the area. Fenland District Council’s Rapid Response Service are on top of this and always would like to be informed should you see any fly tipping, there are a few ‘housekeeping rules’ that Fenland would like residents to bear in mind: 1. Any Fly tipping should be reported to Fenland District Council on 01354 654321 or via [email protected]. Give details of the location of the fly tipping, road names etc.3. Do not touch the fly tipping as it may contain hazardous materials4. If you can see any identification marks within the fly tipping, ie address details, please could you either take a picture or note down the details and pass to the district council. Some months ago I promised to look into the provision of a Foodbank for Whittlesey. Since that time I have been researching food bank provision locally through a Trussel Trust operated scheme administered in Peterborough under the Peterborough Community Church and also the newly adopted scheme in Fenland to try and set up a suitable arrangement to benefit the residents of Whittlesey who find themselves in critical need of assistance. Food banks have proved to be useful as a short term measure but at a recent meeting of interested parties in Whittlesey we all felt that the wider subject of poverty is a serious issue that successive central governments have not been able to come to terms with and to a degree have abdicated responsibility to local charitable organisations such as the Trussell Trust, who in turn may find themselves overwhelmed with demand in the near future. The Peterborough Trussell Trust have now written to me indicating that they are unable to absorb Whittlesey into their scheme due to funding issues involving Peterborough City Council and the increased demand of Peterborough residents for their services. The recently formed Fenland Trussell Trust presents logistical problems for Whittlesey and in any case the majority of Whittlesey residents migrate to Peterborough for employment and social purposes which would present referral difficulties should we have elected to enter the Fenland scheme. After discussion it was decided that we adopt a different approach to poverty and hardship in Whittlesey by encouraging the provision of education to families identified in our area to assist them in the setting up of beneficial projects, examples being the provision of allotments and encouragement from experienced users in growing produce or free cookery lessons for families unfamiliar with economical and nutritional food preparation. At present New Road Children’s Centre acts as an ad hoc food bank by providing donated dry and tinned goods for selected families. This operation will now be developed further by acting as a distribution centre for other goods donated by our local churches which at present are transported to the Trussell Trust in Peterborough. Whittlesey Town Council has earmarked funds to purchase two lockable metal cabinets for food storage and these are to be housed at the Whittlesey Christian Church with local transportation to New Road Children’s Centre as required, the Children’s Centre having limited space at the present time. This is effectively to act

as a fall back system whilst wider projects to tackle poverty are explored and implemented. We are confident that this system will prove popular with Whittlesey residents who will see the scheme as Whittlesey being self sufficient, helping each other rather than relying on outside assistance. The scheme will be entitled “Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid - Local Help for the Local Community” and I would welcome your thoughts and individual contributions whether by donating food or by volunteering your time and ideas to help others. My congratulations to all who worked so hard to produce this year’s “Circuit of the Fens” Cycling Festival which brought so much pleasure to so many as judged by the thousands that I witnessed lining the streets not only in Whittlesey but throughout the Fens with people setting up impromptu gatherings and parties in their front gardens as both the professional and amateur races went by. My particular thanks to the people of Benwick who put on a tremendous show in their village with children’s rides and full scale support from the residents who obviously had a great time. The supporting amateur race did, however, experience a tragic incident with one of the cyclists colliding with a slow moving steam engine and trailer in Ramsey Mereside resulting in the rider suffering serious head, chest and leg injuries and being airlifted to Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge. At the time of writing the rider is in an induced coma and I am sure that we all wish him well in his fight for recovery. My thanks also to all those residents who may have been inconvenienced at any time by traffic restrictions surrounding the race but I trust that the majority will agree that it was a small price to pay for putting Whittlesey on the map not only locally but worldwide through mediums such as Eurosport television coverage. We now look forward to another successful Whittlesey Festival on Sunday 7 September.Till next time…………………..

SIMON’S RECIPE OF

THE MONTH

Simon Norris,J Jones Butchers“

”Chicken Caesar SaladIngredients:3 Cloves Garlic

1/2 Cup Rapeseed oil2,4 anchovy fillets

1 LemonBlack Pepper

1lb Chicken BreastSliced Focaccia or Italian whole wheat bread

4 Romaine Lettuce HeartsGrated Parmesan

Instructions:1. To make the dressing, chop 2 garlic cloves

and puree with 1/2 cup rapeseed oil, the anchovies and lemon juice in a blender until

smooth, season with salt and pepper2. Season the chicken fillets with salt and pepper and toss with 1 tablespoon of the

dressing you have just made, grill the chicken until golden and crisp, 3-4 mins per side

3. Brush the bread with oil on both sides and grill, turning until toasted, about 2 mins. Rub with

the remaining garlic clove. Brush the romaine with the dressing and grill until charred. chop

the lettuce and transfer to a bowl.4. Cut the bread and chicken roughly and add

to the bowl. Toss with the remaining dressing, the parmesan and pepper to taste, garnish with

more parmesan.

A big favourite of mine. The Caesar salad. Buy fresh Romaine Lettuce Hearts and lightly char them before chopping them up and adding to your salad. Delicious.!

WHITTLESEY WIAt the August meeting members enjoyed a very interesting slide show and informative talk about the history of the Straw Bear which the speaker Brian Kell started up again in 1980. It has grown and grown each year with the ‘bear‘ visiting Germany and the German bear visiting Whittlesey a few years ago. The next meeting is on Tuesday 2nd September when Charlie Kitchen from the RSPB will give a talk about his work. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7 30pm at St Andrew’s Church Hall. New members are most welcome, call Ginny on 01733 205148.

Pigeons Farm, one mile east of Thorney village, has been open for six and a half years now and is growing all the time. So far this year they have altered the reception and restaurant to give more space and make it more comfortable. The indoor playbarn has been refitted with an Old Pioneers climbing frame and a trim trail combination. Out in the outdoor play area a huge combination play frame has been built to add to the zip wire, Jumping Pillow, Gobots, pedal tractors springers and more. The main thing that families enjoy at Pigeons Farm is being able to get close to the animals, unlike some other local farms.Visitors can hold the rabbits, guinea pigs and chicks, and touch many others. A new event this summer to add to egg collecting and tractor and trailer rides is pig racing-great family entertainment! o, from 1898 the Trustees of the Town Lands Charity had control of the Town Hall. One of the first tasks they did was to purchase the chairs for the meeting room, giving the old chairs to the Guardians of the Whittlesey Union for the use of the older inmates of the Workhouse. Nothing of any importance came up until January 1908 when Elizabeth Ground, the caretaker, could no longer carry out her duties and went to live in the almshouses in Barrack Yard, London Street in Whittlesey. From a list of eleven applicants who applied to fill the vacancy, James Oldfield and his wife Kate were appointed. James was a builder and went to live in the cottage attached to the Town Hall and made several improvements to it at his own expense. He was also chief of the fire brigade and had charge of the fire engines which were housed in the main building. In 1910, John Peed offered a portrait of his uncle, also a John Peed, who had given valuable service to all aspects of the Town. The portraits of Sir Harry Smith were given by Miss Mary Juana Holditch and a banner presented to Sir Harry upon his triumphal return to the Town in 1846 after his success in the battle of Aliwal in India was given by the Whittlesey Urban District Council during this time. These and the painting are still on view in the meeting room. In 1911, the Trustees decided it was about time better sanitary accommodation was provided for the benefit of the caretaker and those using the Hall. The inevitable committee was formed, and architect approached and Rose & Sons were awarded the contract to carry out the work involved for £61.00. The question of acoustics in the meeting room arose when in 1927, the clerk to the Guardians pointed out to the Trustees that difficulty was being experienced in hearing speakers at meetings. Two years later the trustees were prompted into action when the clerk to the Isle of Ely County Council, whose magistrates used the room, stated that they would pay interest on the outlay of providing double windows and a system of wires to improve the acoustics. As the onset of the Second World War, having fire engines in the building and the fire chief living on the premises it was the obvious choice for an air raid wardens post. Various fund raising for “War Weapons Week” and “Wings for Victory” were carried out in the Town and two plaques commemorating these efforts are displayed in the meeting room. Mr Norris, whose firm provided the clock, died

during the War bringing to an end the families 66 years involvement in continually winding it. The cooking range, installed in 1906 was replaced, in what had become the caretakers cottage and the Trustees provided the material for concreting the yard area which James Oldfield did free of charge. The National Fire Service, as it became known, vacated the premises and James was given the task of redecorating the two rooms they vacated again at his

own expense. In 1952, The Isle of Ely County Council, who were paying £40.00 per annum for their Magistrates to use the meeting room, pointed out that the facilities were not entirely satisfactory. They proposed improvements which would costs approximately £1000.00. The Trustees said that they could not contribute to this cost, but if the County Council carried out the work they would give them a 21 year lease. The County Council did carry out this work which involved making the rooms used to house the fire engines into waiting rooms for the solicitors and general public. New toilets with connections to the main

sewer were provided and the external double doors replaced with windows contained within the curved arch of the existing openings. Having spent all this money on a building which was not theirs, the County Council offered to buy the building but the Trustees resisted their advances. They did, however, agree a new 21 year lease with the District Valuer for them to continue to use the premises at an increased rent of £75.00 per annum. There is more to come….!

Just taking the opportunity to share a few summer thoughts:

It’s all change at the top at one of Whittlesey’s stillwaters, after many years at the helm of Railway Lakes, brothers Tony and Paul Hudson are stepping down. As I am sure some will know Tony was one of the best bream anglers in the area and was a member for many years fishing for the

all conquering Oundle side. He took many titles on the individual front too, including the River Welland Championship, he was the River Nene Champion and also won the huge CIU national. All good things come to and end though and now Tony and his brother have decided to step aside and have sold the fishing rights to Dale Hudson (no relation) who already has Float Fish Farm on his books. I spoke to Dale last weekend and he was already planning to make some big improvements on both the shallow and deep lakes. The news comes thick and fast with regard to our local stillwaters, new owner of East Delph

Fishery is James Mackay and even after he gave me some brief outline details about what he would like and will be doing over this summer and looking into the not too distant future it sounds as if we are going to have the Delph back to its former glory days. All that’s in the future though as there is plenty of work to be done around the lakes and indeed sorting the original stock out. FDC Street Scene Officers (those responsible for enforcing littering and dog fowling) had only given two fixed penalty notices out in Whittlesey – which gave the impression that there was NO litter in our town or villages. I suggest they take a long look at our statistics – the numbers prove otherwise I am sure you will agree.

On the 19th and 20th of July, organisers held a two day International Tai Chi Workshop at The New Eastrea Centre. It was attended by Doug and Susan Overholt from Canada who led the workshop. Sixty four Members came from as far afield as Spain, Canada and Poland. The event was organised by Jeff Moody who runs a weekly class at the centre and The Eastern Counties Tai Chi Academy Committee. Tea and coffee donations of £65 was raised for the Neuroblastoma Society charity.

If you have not read the Mayors editorial in this edition of Discovering Whittlesea please do so. Our church is delighted to be fully supporting this much needed project. It is sad to think that as one of the rich countries in the world, thousands of its own citizens are living in food poverty. Now I am fully aware that such things as poverty or need can be open to abuse by some who believe they can be careless with their lifestyles while expecting others who are careful to make up any shortfall in such things as money or food. But the reality is that through no fault of their own, a growing number of people in the UK, and our own community, are finding themselves in what can only be described as ‘Food Poverty.’ It is true that individuals alone cannot completely solve this problem, national governments must genuinely start putting their people at the heart of policies (not vote winning clichés). However, there is something this community can do to go some way to helping those in genuine need. On its own, an item of good quality non-perishable food may seem pointless, but if only 100 people out of this town’s population of 15000+ contributed one such item, what a difference that combined effort would make. When you see an authorised person collecting food on behalf of WHITTLESEY EMERGENCY FOOD AID, please can I encourage you to do what you can, at the least smile at them. Your help will be used

exclusively to benefit the genuinely needy in our local community.

A busy last month in the town having participated in some great community events. The Circuit of the fens was a pleasure to police even though the event was marked by a serious accident it showed the professionalism of all involved to get the show back on the road. As a team we have managed nineteen arrests all for a variety of crimes. I have also been visiting a great deal of farms in the area as a few have been hit with a fuel theft and equipment being tampered with. A good example of work completed this month was a motorist was seen by an officer driving in an erratic and dangerous manner and when stopped he failed to provide a breath sample – at present he has been bailed to court. Another motorist failed to stop for police and after a short pursuit the driver ran off. Soon with the aid of helicopter and police

dog was located and arrested for driving offences. Following on from an engagement morning on Victory Avenue officers have been made aware of an un-roadworthy motorbike going up and down Coronation Avenue, the rider was also not wearing a helmet and riding on the footpath being a danger to himself and the public . With this information officers were able to catch the rider and the motorbike has been seized. This is just the sort of reason it is important to let us know what you see going on in our town and villages – too often we hear “what’s the point” – with resources as they are we need to make sure we are in the right place at the right time to maximise our chances of catching law breakers – they have to be lucky all the time, we only have to be lucky once!

September• Divide herbaceous perennials - Now is a good time to divide any overgrown or tired looking clumps of alpines and herbaceous perennials. This will invigorate them and improve flowering and overall shape for next year. This is also a good time of year to plant new perennials, especially towards the end of September, as the soil is still warm, but moisture levels are increasing. Continue cutting back perennials that are fading and dying down. • Take cuttings - Take cuttings of tender perennials, such as Pelargonium and Osteospermum. These plants often do better grown from new cuttings each year. If you don’t have a greenhouse, then use a light windowsill to grow them on. You can also collect and sow seed from perennials and hardy annuals.• Dig up remaining potatoes before slug damage spoils them• Clear dead leaves promptly once they start to fall - Rotting leaves can be a source of disease in the garden. They are, however, useful on the compost heap and can be shredded first with a shredder to help them break down quicker.• Plant trees and shrubs - If the weather is already autumnal, you can now plant and move shrubs and trees without having to worry excessively about their survival and establishment. Shrubs planted now will get off to a flying start next spring, as they will have had all winter to settle in.• Mow the lawn less frequently - Raise the height of cut as the growth rate of the grass slows down. This will help the lawn to withstand the last of the warm, dry weather, and also keep it resistant to treading as the wet weather arrives.• Plant spring flowering bulbs. - Common bulbs such as daffodils, tulips, snowdrops, crocus, lilies and iris can all be planted this month and once in flower go a long way to brightening up those dark winter days.

Our bodies are full of bacteria and surprisingly we get on very well together! Termed good bacteria, these bacteria live on our skin and in our intestines. We form a symbiotic relationship in which we give them an environment to thrive and in return they perform a number of important functions for us. We can survive without them but our lives would be far more arduous.

In this article we focus on the bacteria living in our intestines, termed gut flora. Being in the digestive system their primarily role is to support digestion of foods. There are a number of food groups, i.e. certain sugars, proteins and

complex carbohydrates, that we can not process ourselves. The gut flora process these compounds for us and conveniently breaks them down into essential amino acids, sugars and lipids molecules which we then absorb. As the gut flora contains thousands of different bacteria types, they are responsible for helping us with a wide range of foods. Without them we would be unable to process the food and hence be intolerant to it. Lactose intolerance (the intolerance to diary products) is a classic example of this. Another important function is the prevention of harmful bacteria colonising our intestines. Because our good bacteria are so numerous (their population outweighs the number of human cells i.e. trillions) they will starve any invading bacteria. The gut flora also help our immune system by helping it to differentiate between foreign harmful organisms / cells and our own cells. This helps the bacteria because a) it stops other organisms from settling and outsing them (as our immune cells will kill the other organism) and b) it prevents our immune system from killing them! The exact mechanism for how they do this still remains unknown. As stated earlier, our bacteria are numerous and there are thousands of different types. However they can broadly be split into three categorise Prevotella, Bacteroides and Ruminococcus. Prevotella are specialised at breaking down carbohydrates whilst Bacteroides are specialised at breaking down animal protein. Thus, if we eat a very protein rich diet then we will have a greater proportion of Prevotella and vice versa if we eat a vegetarian diet. It is for this reason that vegetarians find it very difficult to digest meat whilst predominate meat eaters avoid/struggle with vegetables. A word of warning however, the by-products of Bacteroides do contains toxins. For this reason many nutritionists are now advising a moderate consumption of meat as these toxins can accumulate in our body’s tissues indirectly leading to other diseases. Finally, there is one question which always arises when discussing gut flora, probiotics and prebiotics what is the difference? Simple, probiotics are food substances which contain the good bacteria i.e. yogurt. Prebiotics are foods/ supplements that contain the types of food the good bacteria like to feed on. In conclusion, we have learnt that our perceived enemy is in fact our friend and provides further evidence that everything in this world has a place; it is simply a question of balance. Perhaps choose a specifically designed food for neutered pets. The operations are very safe although all anaesthetic techniques carry a risk, the operations are very straight forward and are routine for most vets, they are performed in under an hour and animals are usually recovered enough to go home the same day. Equity ReleaseThere are two main types of equity release, one is where a loan is taken against the value of your property that lasts for the rest of your life (or the longest survivor where two people are involved). Initially you will be offered a price below the current market rate, the proportion below the ‘going rate’ is determined by a number of factors but market forces and how long they might have to wait until they can cash in on their investment will be factors. Ongoing there is an opportunity of capital growth if property prices increase (prop-erty prices may rise or fall) – any potential growth will belong to the new owner.

Which boundary do I own?

This is probably the most asked question from a purchaser.

There is a common belief that if the post and rails are on your side of a boundary, then that boundary is yours to maintain. Alternatively, that the boundary on the right hand side of the property when looking straight at the property from the road, belongs to your property.

Unfortunately, there is no legal foundation in these statements.

It is your title deeds which should state which boundary is your responsibility to maintain, quite often distinguished by an inward “T” mark. However, it is not unusual, especially with older properties, that there is nothing on the deeds or at the land registry to indicate which boundary is yours to maintain. In this instance, it is best to ask either the seller or the adjoining owners which

boundaries they consider to be their and your responsibility. You ideally do not want to get into a boundary dispute with your new neighbours.

Cambs876Remembered

n Saturday 9th August, a group of motorcyclists, including myself, started a WW1 commemorative project that will take us 7 years to complete. It was launched here in Whittlesey with attendance from council dignitaries, military dignitaries, the Royal British Legion, Cambridgeshire Regt Association and Army Cadet Force. We are members of the Royal British Legion Riders Branch and we decided we wanted to mark the 100th Anniversary of WW1 by doing something to honour those who gave their lives from our own region. There are eleven of us who have committed to the project us-ing our individual skills and interests to help us achieve our task. We feel that it is important that acts of remembrance continue and one of our aims is to help younger generations understand our his-tory and why we remember. There are 876 men and officers who gave their lives serving for the Cambridgeshire Regiment in WW1, they each have a Commonwealth War Graves Commission gravestone or marker. We will visit every one of the 876 graves to place a poppy cross on or around the 100th Anniversary of their death. This will take us to 6 countries

and 208 cemeteries between now and 2021. We are doing this at our own expense because we believe it is the right thing to do. 001 of 876 is a man called Arthur Cecil Raw-son, he is a Whittlesey man, a Corporal who at the outbreak of war was already serving in the Territorial Army (Cambridgeshire Regt) but was a Grocer by trade. Arthur didn’t make it to France, he was shot by a negligent discharge whilst on the way to the docks. His parents brought him home and he is buried in Whittlesey cemetery. He now shares his resting place with his parents who were buried there at a later date.

Arthur was one of the first of millions who lost their lives over the years, nobody really under-stood at that time what was to come. We hon-oured him on 9th August 2014 as we will honour all 875 of his colleagures. We are proud to be able to do so. Arthurs descendents are still resident in Whit-tlesey and we were able to trace them, which allowed four generations of his family to take part in the remembrance service. It was an emotional day and due to the support from many the event was everything we hoped it would be. The inter-est in our project has given us the boost we need to move forward with the commitment we have made. Patients Participation Group (PPG) FLU CLINICS 2014This year’s flu clinics will be held on Saturdays 4th and 11th October. Doors will be open to Patients from 8.30 until 11.00 a.m. At the same time there will be a HEALTH FAYRE event in the waiting room with a cake stall run by our PPG to raise funds towards the purchase of equipment required by the Surgery. Members of the PPG will also be handing out our annual patient questionnaire. Also in attendance will be the practice Health Trainer and the Smoking Cessation Team. Invitations have been extended to the local Police and Fire Officer and to the Fenland District Council Golden Age Fayre

representatives – we are currently awaiting their responses. Following the success of the Blood Pressure Monitor it is hoped that some Scales will also be purchased and installed in the waiting room prior to 4th October. Scheduled PPG meetings will be held on the following dates: Monday 8 September and Monday 20 October 2014 at 7 p.m. at the Surgery. The Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday 17 November at 7 p.m. also at the Surgery.

First of all a big thank you to Alderman Jacobs Pri-mary School for allowing us to have a teddy tombola stall at their fete on 12th of July to raise money for the Poppy Appeal. Also many thanks to all those who have donated cuddly toys to us, and to the many people who came and had a go. The weather was nice and sunny and we raised a total of £145.00 for the Poppy Appeal. Our next event for the teddy stall will be at the Whittlesey Festival on Sunday 7th of September. We are always in need of cuddly toys of any size in reasonable condition so if you have any that need a new home please give us a call on the telephone numbers below and we will be able to collect locally. The 4th of August was the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War and to show due respect we held a candlelit vigil between 10pm and 11pm at the Whittlesey memorial. This initiative was called Lights Out and was observed up and down the country both officially and by many in their homes. Although the decision to hold this vigil was only taken the day before many people joined us and placed candles at the memorial. The branch standard and the Cambridgeshire Regiment Old Comrades Asso-ciation standard were raised, a poem was read and our chairman read the exhortation. As advised in the previous month's magazine the RBL Riders, together with our branch, arranged a special commemorative service on Saturday 9th of August, at the Whittlesey cemetery for Corporal Cecil Rawson of the Cambridgeshire Regiment. It marked exactly 100 years since Corp. Rawson lost his life,

the first person of the 876 from the Cambridgeshires to do so. It was a particularly poignant service with Corp. Rawson's relatives among the congregation of over 100 dignitaries, veterans, legion members and the general public. After the service and laying of wreaths and crosses all returned to the Ivy Leaf Club for refreshments where the RBL Riders gave the relatives of Corp. Rawson and the branch chairman specially designed memen-tos to mark the event. The next event is the Poppy Appeal Band Concert at the Ivy Leaf Club on Friday 24th of October when the City of Peterborough Concert Band will entertain us. The band have been supporting us over the last 15 years and have helped us to raise thousands of pounds for the Poppy Appeal. I am sure that this year will be as good as always and with maybe a special tune or two to reflect the special dates and anniver-saries over the last 100 years. Tickets are priced at £5.00 each and are available from myself or Judy Darby. Please contact us on the numbers below.

LADYSMITH W.I.At the next meeting on Tuesday 9th September Terry Schon will give members and guests a presentation on Sound Therapy which can help towards enhancing health, happiness and wellbeing. He uses didgeridoo, Native American flute and shruti box and, after an introduction,

everyone is invited to have a go.The competition for September is a musical instrument. A lot has happened since the last In Bloom article and firstly we would like to thank everyone involved for their hard work and dedication in getting everything ready for judging day which was on Tuesday 22 July. Presentation Day is Thursday 11 September and is being held in Gorleston. It has been decided that our normal scheduled meeting due on Tuesday 26 August will not take place; instead a special meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday 11 September at Grosvenor House, so that the results can be given to the members as soon as possible after the presentations. The judges commented on the improvements made with various projects; the three year project at The Garden of Rest on Station Road was completed when the two judges officially opened an interpretation board. The Landscape Group team (FDC contractors) were on hand along with Bob Ollier, FDC Parks and Open Spaces Manager together with two Town Councillors. The Pound, on Aliwal Road is nearing completion and the judges were very impressed with the achievements there. We will be working out a timetable to open The Pound to the public shortly. Various Streetpride projects were on the judging route which started and finished at Sir Harry Smith Community College. Our thanks go to Jonathan Digby, Principal, for his hospitality and also to Angela Curtis for her efforts on behalf of the College to keep up its inclusion in In Bloom. Park Lane School, also on the judging route, welcomed the judges and our thanks go to Liz Hughes for her dedication

with the children and their grow your own project. The Cemetery, Lattersey Nature Reserve, the Allotments on New Road and the New Queen Street Surgery end of car park were also given praise from the judges. This article would not be complete without a mention of the Diamond Jubilee beds at the entrance to the Manor Leisure Centre. This year the beds had been planted to commemorate the

centenary of the start of WW1. The judges said how impressed they were with

what they saw. No doubt many of you reading this will now know that the night before the judging took place the beds were vandalised. Without the TLC of Gill Lawrence, In Bloom Secretary, the beds would not have looked so perfect

for judging. The vandalism continued throughout the following

week until an article appeared in the Peterborough Telegraph which was

then followed up by an interview by Radio Cambridgeshire and Heart Radio. Despite not wanting to publicise vandalism it was felt that something needed to be done to make the culprits aware of the feelings of the majority of us. The members of the In Bloom team were disheartened and sickened that a person or persons attempted to ruin what had been achieved. The generosity of businesses and members, both monetary and time wise appears to have been forgotten. Since the publicity the local police have stepped up patrols in the area. Let’s hope the culprits do get caught. In conclusion we would like to express our thanks to the Whittlesea Charities and the St Andrew Masonic Charity Trust for their generosity this year, without which Whittlesey in Bloom would not have happened.

Sunday 07 September 10.am – 5.00pm

One of the popular features of the Whittlesey Festival are the Classic Cars and this year will be no exception with about 100 of these fabulous vehicles on display in Market Street and Broad Street. They really are a sight not to be missed and even attract visitors from across the country. These are just one of the many exciting things the whole family can experience on the day. The Festival on Sunday 07 September will start with a spectacular, colourful and musical parade assembling at 10am at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street. We would love as many people as possible to line the streets to see this wonderful display. The parade will make its way along Broad Street and Market Street to the Square for the official opening. The Festival will then run throughout the day up to 5pm. With just days to go before the Festival excitement is already building as the Market Square and surrounding streets and buildings will be buzzing with fun and activity. For those of you who have been following the regular Festival articles over the last few months, you will have already had a bit of an insight into some of the things you can do and see throughout the day but in case you haven’t or you’d like a quick reminder here’s a selection :

COMMUNITY UPDATE As many of you will be aware, the outline planning application for the Showfield site was refused by Fenland District Council just before Christmas. We understand that the applicant has appealed, and that the date for the public enquiry will be announced in the near future. The Action Group will remain in place and will respond as appropriate to any future actions.

While there were many issues highlighted, the principal reasons for rejection were:-

l Flood risk and surface water drainage when the Washes are in flood, both to new and existing residents.

l The landscape and visual impact of the site to adjoining residents and to the scenic open land views from the north looking towards the town.

l Highway safety for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

It was notable that our elected representatives on Whittlesey Town Council, Fenland District Council and Westminster expressed their concerns and objections to the proposal, and expressed this in their articles last month in Discovering Whittlesey.

The Showfield Action Group would like to thank all those in the community who sent letters of objection, and those many who have given their time to deliver leaflets and collect signatures on the petition. It is clear that the strength of public opinion against this development was a significant factor when the planning department considered this application.

In the light of recent flooding elsewhere in the countryside and our ever changing environment, Whittlesey has been very fortunate so far this winter, but we believe that any significant development to the north of the town can only increase the risk of flooding, both now and for the future generations to come.

We can now confirm that the Planning Inquiry will take place in the Council Chamber, Fenland Hall, County Road, March starting at 10am on Tuesday 23 September 2014 and is scheduled to last 4 days. We know that not all interested and concerned residents will be able to attend the Inquiry in March, given the distance and limitation on seating capacity at Fenland Hall.p

As a result of this, an evening session starting at 7pm on Wednesday 24 September 2014 will be held at The Manor Centre, Station Road, Whittlesey, at which you will have the opportunity to express your views and concerns to the Planning Inspector. You attendance at the Open Evening is important to ensure the inspector understands the strength of local feeling on this particular development.
