am writing this month's introduction, having spent the last few days working at the London Marathon show. It's a four day event where all the runners taking part in the marathon, have to come and collect their numbers. It was an inspiring few days, meeting people who for a variety of different reasons have decided to push their own limitations. I promptly came home and ran my short distance through the streets of Whittlesey, inspired by those runners I met. I am now signed up for the Race for Life in Peterborough (http://raceforlife.cancerresearchuk.org). I'm not suggesting we all slip on our running shoes, but why not try something

different this month, after all, in all of us we have the ability to succeed at anything we put our minds to.

I am very excited to introduce another great regular feature to the pages of Discovering Whittlesea, Westfield Nurseries have teamed up with us to bring you a monthly gardening page. We are absolutely delighted to have the wonderful team at the garden centre on board with us, and I am certain it will be a very popular addition. Turn to page 39 for this month's tips and advice, and do let me know your thoughts.

May's issue of Discovering Whittlesea is packed full of local news, including a report on Warwick Davis' visit to Sir Harry Smith Community College, information about the new non-emergancy telephone number (101), and important information about the Jubilee celebrations (page 13) which is now only next month.

We would like to welcome the new landlords at the Nags Head, who I'm sure will do an excellent job at an already very popular pub and restaurant.

ast month the whole of Park Lane School came out into the sunshine to celebrate the official opening of the new Trim Trail. The children had waited patiently for nearly two years for the lovely new Trim Trail which was installed by Steven and the team from RJ Warren in Whittlesey. The children were joined by Mrs Kay Mayor, Mayor of Whittlesey who officially opened the Trim Trail, Steven Johnson from RJ Warren, representatives from News International who donated toward the Trim Trail and Sindy Wheatley, the Chair of Friends of Park Lane School who have fundraised for the last two years towards the project. Other corporate donors include Hanson in the Community, McCain Foods (GB) Ltd and Perkins Engines. A special thank you has to go to Mr Phillip Green who kindly removed the old and broken Trim Trail and made a lovely outdoor classroom in it's place.It was decided that the oldest and the youngest pupils in the school would hold the ribbon and Alex and Poppy did really well in helping. Even the Mayor had a go on the Trim Trail! The children love their Trim Trail very much and pupils, staff and FOPLS would like to thank everyone involved with the fundraising, installation and opening.

Whittlesey Festival plans Now underway

The Whittlesey Festival this year is on Sunday 9th September from 10am– 4pm and once again promises to be a fantastic day out for all the family. Over 6,000 people attended last year and organisers are delighted that with the support of the local community and those visiting from other towns and villages, that the Festival will once again be a resounding success. There really is something for everyone with a variety of stalls, vintage cars, puppet shows, dance displays, performing arts groups, the ever popular Schools Art Exhibition which will be on display at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street and much more. One of the highlights of the Festival is that the children’s rides and amusements are offered free of charge so that families can enjoy a fantastic day out without the financial strain. The Festival Steering group are keen to maintain this aspect of the Festival and are therefore hosting the ‘Whittlesey Festival Fund Raising Jubilee Ball’ to help towards covering the cost of providing these attractions. This is a ‘Black Tie Dinner on Friday 25th May, 7.00pm – Midnight at the Ivy Leaf Club in Whittlesey. All are welcome to attend a great evening out with a four course dinner and great entertainment, plus a raffle with some great prizes to be won. Street Lighting CAMBRIDGESHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL

(CCC) PRIVATE FINANCE INITIATIVE (PFI)Last November CCC in partnership with Balfour Beatty began a five year project of replacing street lighting throughout Cambridgeshire with Balfour Beatty maintaining the network for a further 20 years. More than 15% of the county's street lights are more than 30 years old and the council plans to install energy-efficient replacements, beginning with the oldest lighting stock.

Here in Whittlesey the work began last November; and I think it is suffice to say that it soon became apparent to Town Councillors there was an issue with the literature being sent to residents prior to the work commencing. The literature was inaccurate in as much as there was no mention that there was to be a reduction in the number of street lights. Also, at no point prior to the commencement of any works were the Town Council or residents consulted on regarding the suggested “design” for the relevant areas.

Due to the number of complaints received by the Town Council I agreed to present our case at the CCC’s Enterprise, Growth and Community Infrastructure Overview and Scrutiny Committee on 30 March.

As a result of correspondence and a site meeting between CCC and the Town Council leading up to the Scrutiny meeting some issues had been partially resolved.

Unfortunately this does not mean that where street lights have been removed they will be put back; I am sorry to have to tell those residents who have complained that we as a Town Council have done all we can to ensure that our voice is heard. The scheme is to reduce the number of street lights in the whole of Cambridgeshire by 10%. The literature has now been amended to explain this; but too late for those streets in Whittlesey already affected. I have also been assured that no further works will be carried out until the Town and Parish Councils have been consulted. This is reassuring, because who knows the Towns better than your local representatives?

In conclusion I can advise you that no further work in the scheme will take place in Whittlesey until 2015.

Flower Festival at St. Mary’s ChurchDuring the Jubilee weekend The Friends of St Mary’s Church, Whittlesey hope you will have time to join our celebrations. We are putting on a Flower Festival themed, ‘60 Glorious Years’ in tribute and celebration of H M Queen Elizabeth II service to all her subjects. We are fortunate to have the skill, care and leadership of Denny Hall. She has taken time to design the overall event and sought flower arrangers to translate the individual themes into beautiful arrangements. We are conscious of Her Majesty’s service, her family, her favourite homes and The Commonwealth. The local Junior schools are joining in, as we have asked them to draw the Queen onto a paper plate. These will be strung around the Church, so you have to come and see if you can spot your own. The Festival will open on Saturday 2nd June and run through the Sunday and Monday too between 10 am and 5pm. Entry charges will be £2 per adult, no charge for children. Refreshments will be available throughout our opening times. If there are any flower arrangers that would like to play a part please feel free to contact me. JENNER HEALTH CENTRE PATIENTS PARTICIPATION GROUP RAISE

OVER £500

The recent 'Just a Show' at St Andrew's Hall was a resounding success and raised over £500 for the practice and it's patients. A Coffee Morning likewise added to funds.The group will be hosting a Hog Roast and quiz night with bar on Saturday 19th May (6.30 for 7pm) in St Andrew’s Hall. Teams of four are invited at a ticket price of £10 per person. Tickets are available from JPPG members or at THE JENNER HEALTH CENTRE on Tuesday mornings.

Warwick Davis visits Sir Harry Smith Community College

Armed with his autobiography, “Size Matters Not”, Warwick spoke to the pupils about some of the issues he faced growing up, including those he face during school PE lessons – frequently being mistaken for the ball in football and using the hurdles as limbo bars!

The students were captivated and intrigued at how someone from the local area could have been in so many blockbuster films, from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy to Harry Potter and Star Wars. Warwick explained that he has his Nan to thank for that! After hearing an advert on the radio for actors to appear in Star Wars – Return of the Jedi, she put Warwick forward and the rest is history!

During the one-hour talk, Warwick explained how he endures gruelling four-hour make-up sessions for most of his films, using prosthetics to transform him into the characters we all know and love. He showed a time-lapsed video of the process, from the first life-cast to the final hair being put into place.

“We have been lucky enough to have been visited by Warwick on many occasions and it is always sensational. The students thoroughly enjoy seeing him and hearing about his

amazing career, as do we on the staff!” Sharon Ashworth, Curriculum Manager for English, said. “Warwick is always extremely generous and always willing to stay to sign autographs and pose for pictures with the students. The sessions are a fantastic opportunity for students to see just what can be achieved through dedication, passion and hard work, and Warwick is always a huge inspiration to them all by the end.” PIC: Warwick Davis with Bernie Schooling (left) and Ellis Frank (right)

Pupils and staff alike at Sir Harry Smith Community College were delighted last week to be visited by local actor, Warwick Davis. The Harry Potter star visited the school to speak to Year 7 & 8 students about his life and career.

FUNDAY ON 19TH MAYAll are welcome to a funday being held on Saturday 19th of May, between 12 and 4pm, at the Straw Bear public house in Whittlesey. The event will be in aid of Helping Hands Against Abuse (a support group for victims and survivors of abuse). The group are currently applying for charity status at the minute, and have raised over £5000 since Patsy first started the group in July.The funday will have all the usual attractions of fair rides and games, tombolas, BBQ, carboot pitches, tarot reading, face painting, bouncy castle, cake stalls etc. The organisers are also hoping to get enough people interested in doing a sponsored wheelbarrow race for a mile, due to start around 11am.

Our building of the ‘Plough project’ at Plough Road is taking place (more in next month’s issue). Our thanks to John and Val Whitwell who donated the plough, and to Richard Hickford at Cambridge & Peterborough Turf who are sponsoring the project.

Besides the Plough project, we will be placing (two) rustic sleeper benches at Ramsey Road layby celebrating the Queens Diamond Jubilee. There will be another ‘Flower boat’ (the last one) at Peterborough Road – opposite the Water Tower in the autumn.

Our core Litter Picking and general rubbish clearing is still our main focus, and we have carried out seven events this year and have already collected and removed over 200 bags, over 2,300 Kgs and a lot of fly-tipped tyres.

This month I’m going to start where I finished last month – talking about the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations here in Whittlesey; when you receive your May edition of Discovering Whittlesey hopefully it will remind you to come along on Bank Holiday Monday, 7 May, to watch the fund raising Duck Race on the river adjacent to the car park of the Hero of Aliwal Public House on Ramsey Road. The race starts at 2 pm, so if you haven’t yet bought a ticket come early and make sure your duck is in the race. I do appreciate that there are so many good causes out there all trying to raise funds, but to make a success of our Jubilee Celebrations on Monday 4 June it is vital that we raise sufficient funds. The Jubilee Day on 4 June should not be mistaken for the September Festival; they are two completely different events. The Jubilee Day is a one-off event. Please support it; we will not see another Diamond Jubilee for a very long time......

The presentations of a cheque to St John Ambulance and the trophies to the Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year will take place prior to the Council Meeting on Wednesday 9 May. That is also the date when my first year as Mayor ends and my second year begins. It has been a very busy year and I hope I have represented our Town and District well at approximately 100 events. There were some events which unfortunately I was unable to accept for various reasons, but I hope that I can rectify that during this coming year. I always make the local area my priority, so if you have a function coming up that you would like me to attend please get in touch with the Town Clerk on 01733 351296.

I had an exciting time on 21 March when I was present at the opening of the new Trim Trail at Park Lane School; once again funds for the trail were raised by the Friends of Park Lane School; what would we do without our groups of friends? – Well Done! At the time of writing I am still waiting to see the photos of the opening in the Evening Telegraph.

Friday 23 March saw the opening of the Rose Garden at the Garden of Rest in Station Road. All of the roses have names associated with the Royal Family as a connection to the Diamond Jubilee year; some are even named Diamond

Jubilee. Hopefully everyone will appreciate the hard work carried out by Fenland District Council Parks and Gardens Department to bring the Garden back into a lovely relaxing place. The wall to the rear has been repaired and graffiti removed. Further works will be carried out on the gates and at the shrubbery adjacent to the gates and should be completed by July. A Liquidambar Styraciflua Worplesdon tree was also planted in the Garden; this is being paid for through a donation received by the Diamond Jubilee Committee. During September a second tree – an Oak - will be planted at the frontage of Sir Harry Smith Community College. It is hoped that in years to come these trees will be a reminder that we did something for the future generations of the Town in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee. During discussions with the Landscapers and the Fenland Officers I was asked why Whittlesey has not entered the Anglia in Bloom competition; as a consequence I have put our name forward for this year’s competition.

I was delighted to present some flowers and a bottle of bubbly to Mr & Mrs Clarence Hurst in celebration of their Diamond Wedding Anniversary – 60 years – at the end of March. Congratulations!! Sixty is a popular number this year – I have had three personal 60th birthday celebrations in April alone...

I have been sent a letter by a resident regarding the general condition of the paths and derelict land bordering the A605 main approach to Whittlesey. Whilst agreeing with all the comments made, of course the land that is in private ownership, we as a Council cannot do anything about it except to bring it to the attention of the relevant landowners, which I will do.

Don’t forget 7th May Diamond Jubilee Fund Raising Duck Race and then it will only be four weeks to our Fun Day at the Manor on 4th June.

To make sure Whittlesey looks perfect for the Jubilee Celebrations, Whittlesey & District Business Forum will be contacting local shops to encourage them to take part in a window competition. The competition will run especially for the week running up to the Jubilee Weekend, so from Monday 28th May for judging by Saturday 2nd June. This will hopefully lead to a lot of red, white and blue windows at just the right time. Your don’t need to be a member of

Business Forum to take part, and Jenny Parker and Shirley Wright will be calling with the details very soon. BOB WALDEN will be taking over the Nags Head at Eastrea from Monday 7th May. So what can we expect?

Bob comes with a wealth of experience having been in the pub trade for the last 30 years, the last 12 of these have been at “The Stars” in March where he has built up a first class reputation for fine ales and quality food at competitive prices, and by providing live entertainment on a regular basis.

Bob started in the licensing trade back in the eighties when he was in charge of running all of the social clubs run by London Brick. He is from Peterborough originally, a very keen “posh” fan and likes a bet on the horses in fact he could be described as a very sporty type.

He is bringing Kevin his chef from The Stars, who has worked there for 12years with Bob. Kevin went to Wisbech College for 3years and trained as a chef and is very much noted for his Sunday Lunches and summer BBQs. Kevin will be totally looking after the catering side and one of his thoughts is to introduce a “Sunday Carvery” to the Nags Head.

You may well be asking why leave a successful pub in March to come to Eastrea?, The reason for this is the brewery to which The Stars is

tied, keeps increasing the rent because of its success, so when the opportunity arose to take over a Free House where you are in total control was too good an opportunity to turn down.

Both Bob and Kevin realise that they have a hard act to follow regarding Richard & Charlotte, and they have no intention of changing things for the sake of change. However, they are extremely confident that they will make the Nags Head the “Hub” of the local community and they are looking at this venture long term which in itself gives the pub a long future.

Bob and Kevin very much look forward to welcoming both existing and new customers to the Nags Head and will be extremely disappointed if any customer goes away dissatisfied.

Whittlesey WI meeting in April was a very interesting talk and slide show by Bill Wellbourne, from the Fenland and West Norfolk Aviation Museum on the "History and Recovery of Aircraft in the Fens". At the break fruit cake and fruit punch were served by Clarence and Ruby Hurst. Ruby has been a WI member for many years and they have just celebrated their Diamond

Whittlesey WI update Wedding. They were presented with a rose bush. The next meeting is on the 1st May at 7.30pm at St Andrew's Church Hall, when Resolutions will be discussed and there will be a Sing-a-Long with James Trundle. Plans for the Fete on Saturday 23rd June are going well. There will be a fancy dress competition for children, various stalls, games and refreshments. Raffle tickets are now on sale. I have struggled with the topic of this month’s editorial, not because I do not really believe what I’m writing about, but because it reminds me of the times I’ve made wrong decisions and messed things up. It also reminds me of those who have waited until their lives have become so mixed up before coming for counselling.

Ever since my encounter with God which changed the course of my life for the better, I have been driven with a passion to help people experience the dignity of making something of their lives.

Many years ago, while taking meetings for a church in the USA, a man asked to see me. He was totally broken because of the consequences of wrong decisions he had made. I recall him saying, “I don’t believe in God and even if He was real, He would not want my type anyway. A friend advised me to speak with you although he warned me that you were the kind of guy who says things as they really are. Whilst he had personally felt challenged by the advice he’d received, he was left with the clear impression that you really cared about him as a person.”

I didn’t know whether to feel encouraged or discouraged at the type of person his friend saw me as being. As he spoke at length about what he saw as his hopeless situation I kept trying to reassure him that “having a problem does not make someone a problem person, it simply makes them a person with a problem.”

A word fromCllr Martin CurtisLast month I was given yet another responsibility as a County Councillor, which is to support and develop cycling in Cambridgeshire. It is an interesting role that compliments one of my existing tasks – that of making sure Cambridgeshire benefits from the Olympics.

At the moment there is huge interest in cycling in Britain because of its success as a sport – cycling success at the Olympics will only see this increase. If we can couple this with a drive to spread Cambridge City’s reputation for cycling across the whole County, there is the possibility of creating something with real potential. I see my role as trying to realise that potential, through promotion, working with others and through making cycling safer.

Of course in Whittlesey we have one huge benefit, which is the green wheel route into Peterborough and beyond. I often repeat that it is quicker to

cycle into the centre of Peterborough from Whittlesey than it is to drive – and the parking is free! I often cycle the route and it is part of the running route for my Edinburgh Marathon training – so I regularly get to see how busy it is.

I have had some conversations recently about ways of funding the work to tarmac the final two stretches of the route into Peterborough that do not yet have a hard surface. There are no promises yet, but I will keep trying.

Does It Matter If We Mess Things Up?one way messing things up does matter because others often get hurt in the process. But in another way it doesn’t, because if faced with determination, a willing heart and humble spirit, most problems can be resolved and in the process help us to become a better, wiser and more caring person.

Despite my previous international travel taking me away from home for around 70% of the year, on my return I always tried to have ‘Father/Son’ times, which he called his ‘man to man times.’ I recall sitting him on my knee and saying “Son, I only have one shot at making the right decisions, sometimes I will get it wrong, if I do please forgive me because I will always try to make it right and learn from it.” He is now 40 and we still have a great relationship.

FALSE A popular misconception owing to the obvious drop to the wash. According to the Ordnance Survey this corner id 5.8 meters (19 feet) above sea level, well below the highest point East of the recreation field in Peterborough Road which is 7.6 metres (25 feet) above see level.

TRUE The town Hall was built in 1825 to house the Town’s fire engines and provide a meeting room. Extensive alterations were carried out in 1857 including the rebuilding of the front wall which carries the 1857 date. FALSE St Andrew’s Church only has two clock faces, one to the North side and one on the East side.

FALSE A statute was passed in 1601 but it was not until 1663 that an enquiry was held in Whittlesey. Twelve Governors were appointed in1668 to administer the proceeds from Charity bequests.

The ‘Bear’ is burnt each year necessitating a new one being made. FALSE Whilst Whittlesey still has a station and Eastrea did have a station, there never was one at Coates.

TRUE The cockerel is made of copper and is hollow and when taken down it did have a bullet hole in it and the bullet could be heard rattling around inside. It was alleged that a member of the Home Guard wanted to see it turn round, so he used his .303 rifle to shoot at it. Good shot!!!

ishermen right across the area have been heading to our local waters in search of top quality action and for most of them it’s been a good

period of fishing despite some indifferent weather conditions. Even Peterborough United star’s Tommy Rowe and Joe Lewis have been getting in on the action. On a recent visit to Kingsland Fishery just outside Whittlesey the pair caught really well, netting carp close to double figures on pellet, sweetcorn and luncheon meat. The fishery has been in cracking form and well worth a visit, both carp lakes are producing and the Silver Fish Pool is also running into good form. The bonus at this fishery is that you can fish for the carp off the surface with floating baits and its one of the most exciting ways to catch carp through out the summer months. Railway Lakes has seen quite a few anglers fishing the smaller shallow lake, but now is the time for the big fish anglers to head over to this fishery situated at the back of Whittlesey close to the railway station. The deep water lake has a good head of double figure carp, and quite a few of these fish run to 20lb plus so well worth a day or two targeting these fish of a life time. Another big fish water is Northey Park Fishery and right now owner Elliott Symak (07889 711555) is looking for just a few more dedicated anglers to make up the numbers on his syndicate pool. This lake is for the serious angler but with huge carp stocked it could be your chance to bag a real big one.

As always Decoy Lakes will provide some cracking all day action on just about any lake on the complex, but it does get really busy at weekend with club matches.

hittlesey policing this month has seen a lot going on. The change in police numbers from whittlesey station has now been implemented and seems to be having positive results.

Finally please remember the new non-emergency number of 101. The number change is part of a national scheme to make 101 the single non-emergency number in England and Wales, and has been introduced so residents will have one, easy-to-remember way to contact local police, wherever they are.

The system has been designed to recognise where the caller is dialling from and connect them with the local police service. If a caller does not want to speak to their local force they will be given the option to be connected to different one.

The number change does not affect the way that calls are handled and non-emergency calls will continue 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

People should continue to call 999 when an immediate response is needed, for example if a crime is happening, someone suspected of a crime is nearby, or someone is in danger.

SIMON’S RECIPE OF

THE MONTH

Simon Norris,J Jones Butchers“ ”

Spring is my favourite time of the year, and

with the first of the spring lambs coming through, its time to

enjoy lamb at its best.

Ingredients:Whole Best End Rack of Lamb, Chimed and French Trimmed; Pepper; Garlic Bulb; Salt;

Rosemary; 4 potatoes; Vine of Cherry Tomatoes; 1 Parsnip;

4 Carrots; Lemon; Thyme; Red OnionBalsamic Vinegar

For The Jus:2/3 Cups Red Wine; Half Cup Beef Stock

3 Tbsp Honey; Pinch Thyme; Salt & pepper; Handful of Pitted Cherries

Instructions:1. Turn oven to 180 & place lamb on a roasting tray skin side up. Crush garlic clove over lamb & rub in with a small drop of olive oil. Season with

Salt & Pepper2. Peel & chop potatoes & red onion into small

cubes, place in an ovenproof dish, & cover with a good amount of olive oil, balsamic vinegar.

3. Roughly chop vegetables, add to an ovenproof dish with salt, pepper, whole lemon

cut in half, 3-4 sprigs of thyme & a good covering of olive oil.

4. Place lamb on the top shelf & potatoes & veg on the bottom shelf. Roast for 35mins.

5. Take your lamb out & rest on a board for 10mins whilst making your jus. Give potatoes &

veg a stir & cook for a further 15mins.6. On the hob, using the same dish as you

cooked the lamb, add 8 pitted cherries, 2/3 cups of red wine, half cup of beef stock, 3 tbsp honey, a pinch of thyme & lightly season with

salt & pepper.7. Bring the sauce

to the boil for 5mins, then simmer for 2mins.

8. Carve your lamb. Serve over the vegetables & potatoes & spoon over your sauce.

My recipe is Roasted Best End of Spring Lamb, Medley of Roasted Vegetables, Sweet and Savoury Potatoes, with a Cherry Wine Jus

We recommend using either a griddle or frying pan rather than a grill. Get

your pan smoking hot, before adding the steaks. Cook your steaks as per our

guide above and always follow the resting times, as this is the most important

part of achieving the perfect steak.

A steak is generally a cut of meat which is usually grilled, or pan-fried. When choosing a steak, sirloin is often popular choice due to its taste and succulence. Good sirloin should have the right amount of fat and

good marbling. Rump steak is slightly cheaper than sirloin, but great for griddling or frying,

and has more flavour. Getting more popular is the Rib Eye steak. Due to its excellent marbling,

this steak has incredible flavour and remains tender during cooking. The tenderloin, or Fillet Steak is greatly desired for its tenderness, and is

best cooked hot and fast.Age of the steak is important as the hanging process develops the

flavour and tenderises the meat. As a rule, 21 days (minimum) and 35 days (maximum). Good beef should be a deep red colour and you

should notice small streaks of fat running through the meat.

Blue: 1- 2mins on each side, rest for 6mins

Rare: 3mins on each side, rest for 5mins

Med. Rare: 3-4mins, rest for 4mins

Med: 4mins, rest for 3mins

Med Well: 5mins, rest for 2mins

Well Done: 6mins, rest for 1min

Towards the end of the month, when your spring bulbs have finished flowering, cut off the dead flowers removing about an inch or so of the flower stem. Don't cut off the leaves until they die back naturally, as they will continue to feed the bulb while they are still green. Instead give the spring bulbs which have finished flowering a decent feed with a top quality organic fertiliser as this will help build up their strength for next year.

We are well into the salad season now, so start the month by planting crops such as celery, beetroot, lettuce, salad leaves, watercress and rocket. By planting assorted salads every couple of weeks, you will set yourself up for on-going provisions throughout the summer, but remember to regularly water. If ground space is limited, remember aubergines, chillies and sweet peppers are ideal plants for pots and would benefit from a particularly sunny

patio or balcony.

If you've planted potatoes, earthing them up is an important part of the growing process. It simply

involves drawing up mounds of soil around the potato plants to avoid new tubers turning green and poisonous. You can earth up the soil by pulling a rake, or a garden fork, along both sides of the row of young plants. This will help you make a mound of soil along the row to make sure the growing tubers don't get exposed to light. It can help to mix in good

quality garden compost when earthing up the potato plants.

At the end of the month when the risk of frost has passed, take your tomato plant seedlings from indoors and start to plant them outside. Try to plant when the soil is warm and dry, so hold off if it has been raining.

Remove the old plants, run a fork through the soil, and add some good organic fertiliser so the area is ready for new planting. Mayis also a good time to start buying summer bedding plants for your beds and borders. The last frost should usually come around the middle of May, but in the meantime, you can start putting any bedding plants out for the day and inside during the night. • When mowing, don’t cut lawns too short: longer grass shades its own roots; it also sends roots down deeper to reach precious moisture.• When planting up tubs and hanging baskets, mix water-retaining granules into the potting compost.• Keep borders well weeded as weeds compete for moisture.• Avoid using small containers: a big pot with lots of compost conserves moisture and keeps cooler.• Walls, fences, hedges or even well-established plants can provide shade and shelter for new plants.• Finally, don’t water if rain is forecast.
