hat a busy month it has been! As I'm writing this the weather is starting to turn a little bit warmer and it's looking hopeful that we might start to see some sunshine. I do hope so, as it will be the Jubilee very shortly. See page 8 for your guide on what’s happening when and where for the Jubilee weekend. There were lots of exciting things happening in Whittlesey last month, including a rather wet duck race. Our wonderful photographer, Chris, and I braved the wet to watch the crowds enjoy the duck race. I must congratulate organisers who weren’t afraid to get wet

to raise some funds for the Jubilee party. For the full story, turn to page 9.We also attended the Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year awards, and I was very touched to see three great deserving citizens collect their awards. The emotion in the room was very moving, and I couldn’t help but feel very proud of our community. You may have heard that a decision for a new supermarket in Whittlesey was deferred. You can read more about this in Martin Curtis’ column, and also on page 39.This issue is packed full of local news and stories, not only that, but we also have a fantastic competition to win tickets to the East of England Show (see page 45 for full details). I would also like to draw your attention to a proposed Whittlesey Trade Fair. Whittlesey & District Business Forum in conjunction with Fenland District Council, are looking to hold the first ever local trade fair. It will give businesses a chance to network, source local suppliers and found out more about the latest business news. With all the coverage on local business it would be nice to give a nod to the local Whittlesey big issue seller - It’s a business concept designed to give a hand up not a hand out and he has been on that pitch next to Somerfield for a few years now. I first became aware of him a couple of years ago one Saturday during one of the really cold snaps. He was still selling but it was so cold he was shaking and at risk of hyperthermia. No one had noticed but then a kind old pensioner stopped and told him he should pack up as he was getting too cold so he called it a day. Since then I do take the trouble to speak to him and buy the magazine. He is trying to earn a living like everyone else and its not the easiest job. Alan

In reply to the lady complaining of dog dirt on Whittlesey footpaths, I believe considering the number of dogs walked in Whittlesey the cleanliness of the footpaths shows that the majority of dog owners are responsible and clean up after their dogs. These owners should be congratulated. There is however a more major health issue and that is the remains of fast food that is littered all over the footpaths. This is not only unsightly but a trip hazard and attracts rats which can be a major health hazard. P Jennings

Wet or Dry… Rain or Shine The Party at the manor is sure to go with a bang. In light of the wonderful start to the English Summer that we have been enjoying, planners for the Jubilee Party at the Manor have been working on plans to close the site to traffic and use the roadways and car parks should the field be too muddy. Wet or dry the event opens with a parade lead by Peterborough Highland Band at 1.30pm and runs through to the firework finale between 9.30pm and 10pm in the evening. The afternoon event with its Live acts, Heritage Food Festival, vintage vehicles, stalls, food festival pony rides, jubilee cinema, majorettes, acts on the main stage and more will run between 1.30 and 5.30pm before switching over to the evening event with over three hours of local bands and singers. Join the fun on Monday 4th June from 1.30pm at the Manor Leisure Centre.

The Boat Inn’s Jubilee Celebrations Join talented musicians in the Boat Inn on Sunday 3rd of June from 3pm until dusk, for the start of the Jubilee celebrations. Entrance is free, and you can even bring along your own picnic. Confirmed musicians are the High Rollers, Chris Barrie, Phil and friends, Dave and friends, James Edmonds, Alice, Wooden Spoons, Kelly, 2nd Crop, Liz Cracknell and Joe and Josh of

the Acousticats who will bring a fun and electric mix of folk, pop, rock and jazz. The Boat will also be raising money for Ward E39 at Nottingham University Hospital, where Children from across the midlands who suffer with brain and spinal problems are treated. There will be a collection bucket and raffle, so please give generously.


I should like to thank the following people and organisations for making the Duck Race on Monday 7 May such a memorable event. Firstly where would we have been without the St John Ambulance, they volunteered the ducks, counted them all to ensure there were 1,000 to correspond with the tickets being sold and arranged delivery to and collection from the river, and of course were on hand in the event of any mishaps. The Whittlesey Streetpride team came along to ensure we were litter free and they were instrumental in putting the ducks over the bridge on Ramsey Road into the River. Peter Wright and his Dad from Whittlesey Venture Scouts were on the river in Canoe and Kayak to form a finishing line and see fair play and to make sure we got a first second and third duck.

The winning duck was 129 owned by Mrs B Wiles (£50), second prize went to duck 629 owned by John Garnett (£25) and third was the duck owned by Ralph Butcher, number 500 (£10). We also thank our Volunteer Fire Service who arrived and assisted the ducks on their journey along the river. To ensure we complied with the drought regulations only recycled water was used – pumped up from the river into the

Quacking Fun hose and back into the river. Last but not least Thank You to everyone who sold tickets leading up to the event and to those of you that turned out on a truly awful afternoon. Who could believe that the morning was fine and at 12.30 p.m. the rain started but despite getting very wet I am delighted to say we raised £701 towards the Party at the Manor on Monday 4 June.

Following the Duck Race we proceeded to the Scaldgate Youth Centre to choose the Prince and Princess to lead the parade at the Manor on 4 June. We thank the Mayor and Mayoress of March, Bernard and Sylvia Keane for being our judges on the day and despite very few entrants they selected two young people for the event.

Last month we braved the cold weather to watch the duck race. Kay Mayor explains more.

Less than a year ago Gemma Lee, 26 of Eastrea, felt trapped in her post pregnancy body and suffered with low self-esteem and lack of confidence. The change came in January this year Gemma decided to join her local Slimming World group, with a New Year resolution of giving up smoking she was concerned that the weight would pile on.

Feeling nervous Gemma walked through the doors. “Everyone was so welcoming,” explained Gemma, “and the support from the group and Consultant was amazing’’.

From the moment Food Optimising was explained, Gemma knew she had found a solution. In her first week she lost 5lb and 16 weeks into the plan has lost an amazing 2 stone and has still given up the cigarettes. Gemma was amazed by how much food she could eat on the plan and still is able to enjoy a vodka or two on a Friday night. ‘’I do not feel like I am on a diet, I am on a healthy eating plan where I do not feel deprived of anything and can now cook meals for the whole family which is great instead of separate meals like I had to do following other weight loss programs. I couldn’t have done this without the great Food Optimising plan and the support from the group.”

Now, inspired by her own journey Gemma has trained as a Slimming World Consultant and will re-launch her local Slimming World group in Whittlesey in June. Gemma will offer lots of support, motivation and encouragement to new and existing members and help them achieve the target weight they want to achieve. She says, “Slimming World isn’t just about changing what you eat. It’s all about getting the support to choose a healthier lifestyle.”

On Saturday 7th of July, the baby and toddler nearly new table top sale at the Methodist & United Reformed Church hall, Queen street, will open between 9am and 1pm. Stall holders from 8am.

This sale is for any good quality baby or toddler items such as clothes, toys, and equipment. Refreshments will also be available. All of the money taken from the sale of tables will go straight to the charity SANDS (Stillborn and Neonatel Death charity) to help parents at a very difficult time. Donation buckets will be around for those wishing to donate.

A word fromKay Mayor

This time last year you were reading my first article as Mayor of Whittlesey; as agreed by the Town Council in May 2010, the Mayor is now in post for two years, unless circumstances deem otherwise. The 2012 Annual Council Meeting was held on 9 May so I am now starting out on my second year as your Town Mayor. I consider myself very fortunate to be the Mayor especially this year – being the Queens Diamond Jubilee year. I should like to thank Cllr Martin Curtis for agreeing to continue as my Deputy for a second year and to all my fellow Councillors for their support.

All Town Councillors were invited to go along to Sir Harry Smith Community College on 19 April to watch the School Council Event; every school in Whittlesey and the villages took part in a marvellous show. I could not believe some of the acts and I congratulate you all on a truly professional event.

On the evening of Sunday 22 April we attended the Last Night of the Proms event at Peterborough where we were entertained by the RAF Wyton Volunteer Band, Union flags were waving and we all joined in for a sing-song at the end.

The Royal Society of St George (Huntingdon) branch held a Dinner on St George’s Day, Monday 23rd April, at the George Hotel Huntingdon which we attended and then on Sunday 29 April the Fenland Scouts held their St George’s Day parade in Wisbech; unfortunately there was no parade due to the weather, but the service in St Peter’s Church was magnificent.

The Allotment and Garden Society are progressing with the raised flower beds at the entrance to the Manor; we appreciate all the hard work that is being put into this project and are keeping our fingers crossed now for fine weather so that the planting can go ahead.

As mentioned last month the presentation of the Charity cheque to St John Ambulance Whittlesey took place prior to the Council

meeting on 9 May; it gave me great pleasure to present the cheque in the sum of £1,700 raised from the Dinner Dance and Raffle held on 16 March.

This was followed by the presentation of the Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year Trophies to Mrs Jean Devenish and Molly Martin respectively. We also presented an award for Outstanding Contribution to the Community to Abbie Wiles, which acknowledged that despite young people getting bad press there are some real gems out there that should be recognised. Congratulations to you all.

Several invitations have already arrived for the remainder of May and into June and of course when I write my article for next month’s magazine I will have lots to tell you about the Diamond Jubilee Party at the Manor on Monday 4 June –we are looking forward to some glorious weather and a wonderful occasion hope to see you all there. The Plough GardenWe are very grateful to John and Val Whitwell who donated the Plough; to Richard and Amy Hickford of Cambridge and Peterborough Turf who are sponsoring the Garden; and to the St Johns Ambulance Whittlesey who will be helping us maintain the site.This is Whittlesea Street Prides, 9th community enhancement project. We are all Volunteers and we would not be able to achieve our fantastic clearing up without the help of our small group.We are very grateful to local businesses – P.J. Thory Ltd, whom without their help and assistance we would not be able to achieve these enhancements.Our AGM took place on the 18th April and all the

present committee were re-elected. The meeting covered many aspects concerning environmental issues around our area.We had a fantastic Litterpick on the 21st April; thirteen Street Priders along with twenty-two Geocachers, tackled a mile of Ramsey Road and cleared thirty-eight bags of litter. Leader of the group, Tracy Rowell, kept us all warm and well fed – thank you Tracy.

The weekend of 15, 16, 17 June will see the return for year two of the Cambridgeshire-based Fenland Festival of Soul which is again being staged at the popular Plough pub, restaurant and events venue at Farcet Fen. Festival organiser and landlord/owner of The Plough, Colin Harrison, said, “We’re aiming to build on the success of last year, and anticipate another bumper crowd with our bill of top, soul DJ talent and by bolstering the music line-up to include two fantastic, live, soul bands.” The event gets underway on the Friday evening at 7pm. Fans of the sixties Northern Soul scene will be in for a real treat when the highly acclaimed nine-piece soul band, the Soft Tone Needles, will take to the stage and perform some all time classics. With support from a selection of topnotch DJ's, the evening is set to provide a seven-hour, non-stop stream of the best soul classics and Northern floor fillers. Day two also features more great live music from the Motor City Vipers. It all gets underway at 7pm and runs through until 1am. I was intrigued by my friend’s reaction as he patiently listened to the whinging tones of someone with nothing positive to say about their lot in life. I knew my friend had experienced some very rough times, but had always faced them with such an incredibly positive spirit. While he obviously struggled with the tone of the conversation, I also knew that he was the type of guy who genuinely wanted to help and encourage people.

Putting his hand on their shoulder and looking them in the eyes he said, “ok, that’s told me about your situation, - but how are YOU?” I’ve rarely seen anyone look so lost for words. They finally said “not very good under the circumstances.” If they thought this would answer the question they didn’t know my friend. Still looking them in the eyes he said “well, what are you doing LIVING UNDER those? You’ll find solutions easier if you hold your head up high, change the tone of your voice, look at your problems and tell them they are not going to rule your life.” How true that is for us too.

A few months ago I was made aware that Whittlesey had no real provision to help those with an alcohol dependency problem, and was therefore asked if we could do anything. A simple ‘not really’ would have been the easiest response as we were already struggling with lack of room and were considering commencing phase 1 of our planned building work. This would only increase the problem of juggling our facilities in order to keep things functioning throughout

A word fromCllr Martin CurtisLast month I made the difficult decision to propose a motion to defer a planning decision on a new Supermarket in Whittlesey in order that more work could be done to confirm (or otherwise) an important issue – a proposition which was supported by the majority of the committee. I went into that meeting unsure about where I would vote, but determined to challenge those involved to make sure the decision was the right one. I did that, and it became clear to me that there was one issue that needed to be tested and examined further. There is not enough time to go into detail about this – but if you are interested there is an article about my decision and why I made it on my blog which is linked from my website – ww.martincurtis.net

Whilst my preference would have been to decide one way or another, this is an issue that Whittlesey will have to live with forever, so it needs to be right. It is also possible that the decision will be tested in court – so it is absolutely vital that the decision is a good one for Whittlesey and is able to stand up to legal scrutiny.

The planning applications will be considered again a few months – and it is really important that peoples’ views are heard – so the more that write to the planning department at Fenland Hall to offer their views, the better. I am also planning to do a leaflet drop around the Town with a survey on it – again the more people that respond the better.

On another note, I was really pleased to learn that I have been asked to go out to Africa for a week in June as part of a project providing support to local Councils out there. I was one of only five Councillors from across England who were selected to do this, so it is a real privilege. And I am sure that I will learn a few things that I can bring back here.

Rising To Meet Challengesthe time this will take, the last thing I needed was another thing to juggle. Then I remembered my friend’s words.

I knew that whilst meeting such a need fits in with our passion and vision to serve this community, we neither had the expertise or people available to adequately resource it. Ultimately I contacted Alcoholics Anonymous and offered them the use of our rear hall for free if they would consider opening a centre in Whittlesey. The positive response to the trial period has resulted in their head office agreeing to establish a centre. Local History

It is known that Plough Monday became an occasion for the blessing the tilling of the soil and was recognised as early as the 1400s and at that time was often connected with raising Parish funds through the church. Societies called Plough Guilds were formed, made up of people for the cause of trade, charity or religion. In country areas the commonest Guilds were connected with agriculture. Plough Guilds often maintained Plough Lights in the church and money raised to keep the plough light burning throughout the year to ensure success to the ploughing and associated farming practices.

The Reformation Act in 1538 forbade these Plough Lights and abolished the Plough Guilds and associated ceremonials exacting strict fines on those following the Plough. With changing monarchs and political pressure, the continuation of this custom associated with the church continued spasmodically until the late 1600s when the church became less associated with it.

This then is the background bringing us to the present day, where there is a Plough Service held alternately in St Mary’s and St Andrew’s Church on the Sunday of the Straw Bear Festival weekend.

The Plough which was paraded through the streets of the Town during the Saturday of this Festival is bought into church and according to tradition us suitably bedecked

lough Monday is on the first Monday after epiphany (January 6th) or twelfth night. In medieval times the plough boys (men) were supposed to return to work on this day, the start of a new ploughing season. Instead, a plough was paraded through the streets, decorated with ribbons and with food tied to the beam of the plough being a sort of oblation to Cres the protectress of agriculture. The plough was accompanied by Molly Dancers with blackened faces to disguise themselves and preserve their anonymity. This provided the opportunity for making some money at a difficult time of the year, the aim being to exhort money from householders. If an offering was not forthcoming, then the plough would like as not, be used to form a furrow across the front lawn or garden or destroy a doorstep. A very early use of the ‘Trick or Treat’ principle! In Whittlesey and Ramsey, the plough was accompanied by a ‘Straw Bear’ being a man entirely swathed in straw.

Morris Dancing, performed by Peterborough Morris, is now an integral part of the service, as is the presentation of a Plough Light, a candle being lit to illuminate a model of a local scene. A different model has been made each year for the last sixteen years by Pete Sennett. This presentation is followed by a song performed by his son Tom with accompanying music played on his melodeon.

The service ends with the congregation saying together, with some fervour ‘God Speed the Plough’.

nglers right across the area may have been enjoying some fine commercial carp fishing over the past few months but there is still nothing like wetting a line on a natural

venue at the start of a new season on the fenland drains and rivers.

Many anglers now feel the close season is a waste of time and we should have year round fishing but on the Whittlesey fen drains giving the waters a rest and letting nature recuperate after a long hard winter campaign is no bad thing. The magical June 16th is a date not to miss, opening day on natural venues right across the country. We can expect some bumper bream and tench weights right from the off too with the likes of the Twenty Foot Drain, Cock Bank and Glassmoor all capable of some exciting early season action. Best baits will be worm, red maggot or casters over a bed of groundbait, if you are lucky enough to be able to get out just prior to opening day then a top tip is to rake your chosen swim and pre bait with groundbait laced with casters and worm.For those that still prefer stillwaters then the likes of Kingsland, Railway and Decoy Lakes will all provide

you with top class fishing for the price of a day ticket, don’t forget Northey Park Fishery either, well worth a visit with a good variety of lakes to choose from.Local club books are now on sale from your usual fishing tackle shop and if you have not been fishing since the end of the close season then make sure you have a new Environment Agency rod licence before you set off for your first days fishing as I am sure the water bailiffs will be out checking up to ensure we are all legal, under 12’s do not need one but everyone else does, you have been warned!

his month’s entry I would like to focus on bike crime. In the past weeks Whittlesey has encountered numerous cycle thefts, from bikes being left outside shops to being locked away in garages and sheds. The reason for the sudden spike in bike thefts is not known, although what is known is most of these thefts are opportuntist. People walking down the street and seeing the opportunity to help themselves.To avoid this happening to you I would urge anybody cycling into town or to see a friend to ensure a bike lock is attached upon leaving your cycle. Whether it be to railings or a lamppost.Secondly for added security within your sheds and garages think about ways in which you can make things harder for opportunity thefts. For example security lighting, even street lighting if it isn’t working then contact Fenland district council. Their number can be found on every street light. Also think about locking your bike to something within the shed. Making things harder is a great deterrent.Finally if you would like your cycle coded then contact Whittlesey enquiry office leaving a name and number and we can arrange a convenient time to do so. Although coding does not guarantee finding the bike if stolen, it can be identified if found when patrolling.

THE MONTH

The Ultimate Steak Sarnie - one of my personal favourites

and can be prepared and cooked in under

10 mins.

Ingredients (Serves Two):1.5lb Mature Free range Rump Steak; Mixed

Baby Leaf Salad; Cherry Vine Tomatoes;Ciabatta Loaf

For The Dressing:White Wine Vinegar; Olive Oil; Wholegrain

Mustard; Salt; Pepper

Homemade Chips:3/4 Potatoes; Vinegar; Garlic Salt

Instructions:1. Preheat your griddle pan or grill - I

recommend a cast iron griddle pan - get this smoking hot. Rub your steak all over with olive

oil, salt & black pepper.2. Preheat oven to 250c. Slice your potatoes

into chips, add to a pan of water & bring to the boil for 5 mins, then drain & leave to one side.

3. In a large bowl, add the chips, 2 tsp of vinegar, & a small shake of garlic salt. Mix well, then turn out onto a baking tray. Place in the

oven for 30mins.4. When your pan is smoking hot, place your

steak in the pan. For medium rare 3 mins each side, well done 5 mins each side.

5. Whilst your steaks are cooking, mix the dressing by adding 2 generous tbsp of olive

oil & white wine vinegar, 1 tbsp of wholegrain mustard & a pinch of salt & pepper, add this to the salad along with halved cherry tomatoes.6. Take out your steaks & leave to rest for 10 mins. When your chips are almost cooked,

warm the ciabatta loaf.7. Slice your steak into strips, slice the Ciabatta loaf down the middle & fill with salad. Then place the steaks on

top, drizzling the juices from the meat over

the steak.8. Serve with

homemade chips.

here is little chance of frost this month, so you can head out and fill your borders and pots with some wonderfully eye-catching summer bedding plants - why not start planting varieties such as busy lizzies, marigolds, pansies and lobelias. If the weather is particularly warm and sunny, aim to plant them later in the day or early evening. Keep in mind that many bedding plants only have small root areas and so are likely to dry out in hot weather, so water regularly.

Now is a great time to hang up those summer baskets, but remember to keep up the maintenance they require, so be sure to hang them in spots which won’t be too tricky to reach! Always aim to water baskets once a day if you can, and preferably when the

Roses are really starting to come into flower now, so enjoy them while they’re at their best. Remember to dead head regularly to encourage fresh healthy buds and take care to remove any pesky weeds which may be appearing, otherwise they will sap the nutrients. Always water little and often during any prolonged dry spells. And why not feed your roses with a top quality fertiliser after the first flush of blooms. But, above all, simply remember to take pleasure in the sight and scent of your roses - one of the loveliest assets to any garden.

sun isn’t on them and regular feeding - about once per week in the summer - will also help the plants in your baskets thrive.

The lawn will be growing fast now and will continue to do so throughout the summer, so a good weekly cut is essential to keep it looking neat and tidy.

Young tomatoes should be planted outside if they haven’t been already. Side shoots from your tomato plants should be snapped or pinched off as this will help direct the plants energy to the fruit growing on the main stem. And, unless you are growing your tomatoes in hanging baskets, it’s a good idea to tie up to canes or supports as your tomato plants are likely to grow some height and get rather heavy. Bear in mind all tomato plants are susceptible to whitefly attacks, so consider placing some pots of basil and marigolds near your crops - they act as a great natural insect repellent.

Buy strawberry plants now for an almost instant crop. Plant them in a sunny, sheltered spot in moist, thoroughly dug and well-drained soil. If the soil is really water-logged, the plants will quickly attract some mould disease. As the fruit begins to develop, their weight may cause the actual fruit to lie on the soil. Before this happens, cover the soil around the plants with either straw or black plastic. If you are already growing strawberries, particularly in pots and containers, you can give them a feed with a

tomato food weekly once they start producing fruit.

General maintenance - Hoe borders to prevent annual and perennial weeds from spreading and seeding themselves. Tackle bindweed when

it appears in a border. Stake tall perennials to prevent wind damage to flower spikes. Sweet peas need training and tying in to their supports to encourage them to climb and make a good display. Pot on plants showing signs of being rootbound.

Summer is approaching and now is the time to get out and be active. We all know the well published benefits of sports (i.e. on our cardio-vascular system, body weight, etc) however we thought we would share some of the hidden benefits with you.

Firstly, sports forces us to move multi-directionally and incorporates movement patterns which we may not encounter during our normal lives. This encourages the use of different joints and muscles which ultimately allows us greater mobility.

Secondly, sport develops our co-ordination and therefore improves our spatial awareness. This means our joints/muscles are better protected and less vulnerable to injury.

Thirdly, being active forces us to take deeper and more forceful breaths. This naturally encourages greater movement through our ribs. As our ribs are connected to our spine, our spinal mobility improves too.Furthermore, the increased airflow through our nose, throat and lungs means we are able to clear any stagnated dust particles or mucus. This can help with allergies and improve our vitality.

Finally, when playing sports it is not just muscles and bones which are moving, but also our internal organs. All our organs have a degree of mobility/freedom and that freedom is important to their function. Our modern day sedentary lifestyle stifles that freedom and thus can affect their function. Sport provides a great way to restore that freedom.

visit Vesuvio ast month, pupils at New Road Primary School visited Vesuvio in Whittlesey. The children, who are currently studying a topic at school called Around the World, will be making various dishes from different continents/countries over the coming weeks. Visiting the Italian seemed a great link to the topic and experience for the children’s learning whilst strengthening community links. The children have had great fun whilst learning about the culture of Italy. Miss Marshall, of New Road School, added: “We appreciate the effort of all of the staff at Vesuvio for making the trip fun and educational! We had an excellent time and the children really enjoyed making pizza and a dessert.”

Applications for a new Sainsbury’s store and country park, a business park, and a Tesco store being promoted by Harrier Developments were to be decided by Fenland District Council Planning Committee on Wednesday 9th May. However, members decided to defer decisions on all three applications until a later date.The decision hinged around committee members’ concerns that if they approved the Sainsbury’s proposals, Whittlesey might end up with two stores because of an existing permission on a site in Station Road that Harrier Developments claimed Tesco would occupy. Members wanted to understand further the viability of a store at Station Road if they were to approve Sainsbury’s.Sainsbury’s Development Executive, Robert Oxley said, “Sainsbury’s is completely committed to opening a store in Whittlesey. We have no objection to a food store on Station Road and believe that any additional impact on the town centre alongside a Sainsbury’s store would be minimal. That said we still have reservations about the practicality of Station Road given the accessibility issues from the level crossing.”Robert Oxley added: “I would like to thank the community, and particularly the Town Council and Business Forum, for the support which they have shown for our plans. The Sainsbury’s store, business park, creation of jobs and the new country park really seem to have captured the public’s imagination. But the decision is not made yet and I would urge anyone in Whittlesey who wants to see the Sainsbury’s proposals happen to write to the Council and talk to their councillor.”What are your thoughts? The story follows a young lawyer, Arthur Kipps, who is ordered to travel to a remote village and sort out a recently deceased client’s papers. As he works alone in the client’s isolated house, Kipps begins to uncover tragic secrets, his unease growing when he glimpses a mysterious woman dressed only in black. Receiving only silence from the locals, Kipps is forced to uncover the true identity of the Woman in Black on his own, leading to a desperate race against time when he discovers her true intent.

The Woman in Black was a huge success in the cinema, and became the most successful British horror at the UK box office with more than £14m in just three weeks of release. Not only that, but it received mostly positive reviews from even the toughest of critics. With a certificate of only 12A, it’s a film to watch with the family, although beware, you might be hiding behind your pillow.

Early this year, BUFFS presented a cheque to the Scaldgate Club for their charity. However it is with sadness that we learn the group is going to cease. Member John Smyth, explained that as member numbers slowly reduced it has been decided that King George Lodge will no longer be in Whittlesey. The group continuosly gave to charity, with the last donatation of £1,300 going to Scaldgate Club (The Scaldgate Club for Adults With Learning Difficulties).It is sad that this group will no longer continue in Whittlesey, but they should be congratulated for raising so much money for charity, and we wish them all the best.

The East of England Show has announced this year’s dates and a packed calendar of new and exciting attractions for the region on July 6,7 and 8.

An outdoor evening concert, Friday’s Ladies Day, a brand new ‘green’ business hub, shopping village, a programme of interactive children’s events, food court and of course over 1,000 animals on show will make this year’s event unmissable.

Thousands of visitors from across the region are expected to attend the show – held at the East of England Showground in Peterborough – which in its hey day attracted 160,000 visitors.

Now in its 44th year at the Showground, the 2012 event sees an ambitious plan to recreate the countryside atmosphere but with a very modern twist.

“This is the biggest family show in the city’s annual calendar – we want it to be a true celebration of the countryside, in all its many guises and one that has something for

everyone,” explained Andrew Riddington, Show committee chairman.

“While we continue to stage our traditional favourites including the livestock and equine shows, the prestigious Championship Dog Show and the floral and garden competitions, we also want to introduce some new themes,” added Paul Tate, interim Show secretary.

“We are finalising details on performers for the outdoor concert that will see live music returning to the venue on Saturday evening. On Friday we host a business hub and VIP Ladies’ Day beginning with a breakfast networking event.

“In addition to this, family fun is a top priority on all three days with a multitude of interactive events lined up. It’s about getting involved, taking part, really getting something out of the weekend and leaving feeling you’ve had a great day out and only had to travel as far as the showground to do so!”
