t is glorious sunshine outstide and I have just returned from the lovely AJS fete. It was lovely to see so many happy people supporting a local event and I hope you had a great time if you went last month. Last month was very special, we watched Dylan take his first few steps and now can’t stop him from walking everywhere (and yes, I really do mean everywhere). All parents will know that feeling of pride watching your own child master their legs, but it is another reminder that he is growing up fast. It seems somewhat fittng that I am talking about talking one of my babies growing up fast, when another is turning ten - yes this wonderful magazine is celebrating ten years since first publication. I won’t talk to much here because we have dedicated the centre pages to a look at the history of Discovering Whittlesea, and a look behind the scenes at some of the team members who ensure this is printed, delievered and read by you. What I will say however, is that it’s been a very special four years of my life, and I cannot wait to see what the next four years will bring. This month our 80 pages are packed full of important updates, such as the Whittlesey Country Park, Youth Summer Programme and the Snowley Park /Glenfields Action Group. We also have a piece on the AJS fete, and the very first Whittlesey mini triathlon, which I urge you to support and encourage the next generation to get active (details can be found on page 66). I’d like to end this month with a big thank you, on behalf of the whole team - to you, the readers for enjoying the magazine and you, the advertisers for enabling us to produce it each month, for the last ten years. I know one thing, in another ten years we will still be going and neither Dylan or I will ever look that young again.

Mayor’s ChequesEvery year the Mayor picks a selection of charities, this year the chosen groups were as follows:

• Whittlesey Scouts and Guides were selected to encourage young people in our community and hopefully lay the foundations in life for the citizens of the future.• Community Navigators operate as a signposting agency in our town under the Care Network (Cambridgeshire) scheme being able to direct the elderly and vulnerable to mainstream social services and other advisory bodies. They also offer assistance to persons returning home from hospital in carrying out tasks such as shopping, collecting prescriptions, minor jobs around the home and generally providing company to person alone.• Friends of the Whittlesey Library supplement their budget from Cambridgeshire County Council by fund raising to provide extra facilities for all citizens regardless of age. Recent innovations include the purchase of casters to allow book shelves to be moved around the premises easily to open up meeting space or greater flexibility. I remarked on how pleased I was to see the return of the Learning Centre in our local library.• St Johns Ambulance and the Fire Service were each presented with cheques in recognition of the vital support that they provide at our festivals and other outdoor events such as the annual duck race.

The awards were £1,000 each to Whittlesey Scouts and Guides, Community Navigators and Friends of the Whittlesey Library with an additional £250 each to St John’s Ambulance and the Fires Service Benevolent Fund.

Youth Summer ProgrammeCommotion Youth Group, with support from Cambridgeshire County Council, are delivering a fantastic summer programme including FREE activity days in Turves, Eastrea, Whittlesey and Coates. Funding was gained from Burnt House Wind Farm to deliver the majority of the Summer Youth Programme (full programme is displayed in the magazine). Events kick off on Tuesday 29th of July in the grounds of the Three Horseshoes Pub at 11.15 a.m. where there will be a Zumba class led by Lynn Crawford followed by Boxersize at 12.15. Then there will be a picnic for all those with places. On the 30th and 31st the same events will be repeated in Coates Green and Eastrea Green respectively. The events target those in school year 6 to 19 years old (or up to 25 with additional needs) and will be staffed by qualified youth workers. To secure a place please phone 01354 750186 asap – each child will need a consent form which can be obtained from the Whittlesey Youth & Community Centre – phone 01354 750186 for further details. All forms need to be returned to the Youth Centre (15 Scaldgate) by Sunday 20th July. Week two of the FREE activities will show what our young people can contribute as we will carry out a Litter Pick in Turves (5th), Coates (6th),

Eastrea (7th) starting at 11am followed by an art workshop and a picnic. Please refer to full programme for further details and for activities for Week three and four. There is also the possibility that we can assist with transport as that was part of the initial funding bid although spaces are limited. Please phone 01354 750186 (by 21st of July) to express an interest in transport – priority will be given to younger people and those with additional needs. Can we say a big ‘Thanks’ to Burnt House Wind Farm and The Three Horseshoes Pub! We hope these events will be well attended and we can gain evidence for further events to be held in remote villages. |Policing your area by Geographic Sergeant of Whittlesey Paul Harris

A Summer of sport has presented your local policing team with various challenges county wide, with World Cup Matches and La Tour De France all requiring attention. However, locally we have been available out on the ground conducting licence visits and getting involved in the positive spirit sporting events bring to the community. Local events have been well organised and good communications with us early on has prevented any real issues arising that cause concern. As I write final preparations are made for our own cycling event here in Whittlesey which should be bigger and better than last year! The team has been safeguarding vulnerable identified persons in the community spending time to make sure their well-being is protected utilising services of professional agencies to aid in this partnership approach. With a couple of incidents reported to us of indecent exposure the team has networked with all the schools in the area. Our aim was to make young people aware of the incidents and gathering further intelligence to see if matters had gone unreported. This has

been a valuable exercise and Sir Harry Smith have come forward and asked me to develop this area with them further to bring more education of this into the classrooms. This will look to be implemented fully to all the pupils in late September, early October. Arrests have been made for a number of offences including domestic violence, possession of drugs and thefts. We also, after a lot of work, traced a person back to Whittlesey who was wanted on a warrant for serious matters and has now been placed before the courts. Officers have also reported a number of persons for driving offences and through clever investigation at the scene of collisions identified offences that have led to reports being made against drivers. Information passed by yourselves about litter/graffiti/dog mess in various hotspots around Whittlesey/Coates has been passed to the appropriate agencies and cleaned up. We also continue to strive to work on all the areas you have identified as suffering ASB, and hope that through our intervention things will continue to improve or better still, cease.

14 Discovering Whittlesea | August 2014

Cllr Dave Mason

First of all may I extend my own personal congratulations to Discovering Whittlesea on the current issue which marks the tenth anniversary of production of a truly professional and interesting magazine which I know is eagerly awaited each month by the majority of readers. It is a remarkable fact that this publication reaches around 75% of the population of Whittlesey and the surrounding villages and it provides a forum for so many interesting features and articles which keep our local residents fully informed on what goes on in our area. The magazine has now spawned sister magazines in March and Bourne which I trust will be equally successful as the original. In this day and age of modern technology we have a wide range of social networks with Facebook as an obvious example bringing together people not only locally but worldwide. In our own area we have other examples of social media in the form of Street Life and Shape Your Place which also usefully keep some of us in touch with what happens locally and gives the opportunity for anyone to express their views on a wide range of topics. By means of a Kindle we no longer need to purchase or borrow books from the local bookshops or libraries but there is still a place for the good old fashioned book or magazine and I am sure that Discovering Whittlesea will go from strength to strength so many congratulations to all who are involved in its production and may there be many more issues. Speaking of the media and in particular local newspapers, the comment has reached me on several occasions that Whittlesey has a poor press coverage although I must say that I enjoy reading the Cambs Times each week. To try and redress matters I have had correspondence and a meeting with the Peterborough Telegraph of late and I am confident that there will be a much enhanced coverage on the Whittlesey page of this particular newspaper in the future. As many of you read this article I am sure you will share the disappointment of the Whittlesey Town Council that after continually raising strong objections and fully supporting our residents in attempts to stop a Gladman Developments second planning application to develop land north of Snowley Park and Glenfields for housing a decision was made by the Fenland District Council Planning Committee to go with Officers recommendations and approve the planning application.

This decision is nothing short of a travesty and we all know the issues that if common sense prevailed would dictate an opposite recommendation. This decision has been made by people who have limited knowledge of Whittlesey and indeed by some who have yet to visit the affected areas and in my opinion they have been swayed by the considerations of finance defending possible future litigation and not on the merits of the objections. My thanks to Cllr Derek Stebbing and Cllr Mrs Kay Mayor, our District Councillors sitting on the FDC Planning Committee, who have done everything in their power to fight what ultimately appears to be a losing cause and also to my Deputy Mayor, Cllr Mrs Dee Laws, for her tireless work in marshalling local action groups.Although an official deadline date of 15 July for objections to this outrageous decision has now passed I would still urge as many citizens as possible to lobby the Secretary of State, Nick Boles MP, to “call in” this application for an independent review either by sending a letter to Nick Boles MP at the House of Commons, London SW1A 0AA or by emailing him at [email protected] expressing your views. We must not go down without a fight as it may have repercussions later on the planning application on the Showfields site which has similarly been recommended for refusal by Whittlesey Town Council. Finally, we have a battle on our hands to retain the prestigious title of “Pride of Fenland” at this year’s Fenland Business Awards for the fourth consecutive year but you can help by nominating Whittlesey as a town promoting its centre in the face of increasing competition from out of town retail units and internet shopping. Please address your comments by August 29 at the latest to [email protected] to show how much we care about our town and indeed the pride we have in Whittlesey.

Until next time…..

Whittlesey Country Park

The continued support and interest in our Country Park remains extremely positive, with genuine offers of help and assistance, together with many enthusiastic volunteers registering their interest, the project is going from strength to strength. This amount of activity has resulted in the formation of a management committee, who have been given various objectives to achieve. Our next general meeting takes place on Friday 1st September at 19.00 hours at Whittlesey Town Council Offices – Grosvenor Road, Whittlesey. Everyone wishing to attend will be made most welcome. In the meantime the committee willing be preparing a formal constitution, making banking arrangements, implementing the Country Park logo, and engaging in dialogue with established and successful park operators. We will continue to listen to any ideas from interested groups, for example youth groups, schools, nursery groups and others, and encourage all options put forward to be considered. Please remember, this is a 10 year project, and not all plans will be realised in the first year, however your input, at the start of this project, would be most welcome. Please direct your enquires to the WCP secretary at [email protected]

LADYSMITH W.I. It was laughter all evening at the Ladysmith WI meeting in July. Linda Scoles entertained members and guests from neighbouring WI’s, as well as ladies from the Keep Fit Club and the Werrington & District Flower Club, with her witty anecdotes on how she learned about ‘the facts of life.’ The Peterborough Morris Men will be dancing at the next meeting. The theme is ‘bring a plate picnic.’ Guests are always welcome at our meetings. The next meeting is on Tuesday 12th August at 7.30pm, St Andrew’s Hall, Parkinsons Lane. For more information ring Liz on 01733 689599.

Proudly in association with Wright's of Whittlesey

he Governors had two tons of coal delivered annually to feed the two fires in the committee rooms and a pair of steps were purchased to enable the windows to be cleaned, the tops of which were ten feet from the floor! The cell was put to an alternative use in 1866 to store the ammunition belonging to the Whittlesey Rifle Corps, obviously the inhabitants of the Town were being law abiding at the time! By 1870 the inside of the building required painting which John Aveling said he would do for £6.00 after the chimneys had been swept. He eventually ended up renovating and painting the outside of the building as well. During the winter of 1872, the Governors were feeling the cold and one remedy adopted was to lay a new floor crosswise over the existing floor to preclude the cold permeating from below. This work remains in place today. To increase the lighting, gas lamps were also fitted to the naked flames. Meetings may have been going on too long as a clock was ordered to be placed opposite to where the chairman sat. Mr. Norris, clock maker, Broad Street, Whittlesey supplied a plain round clock with an 18 inch dial in an oak frame for £10.00. For this sum he was expected to maintain the clock and keep it wound up for a year. After this he was paid 10 shillings each year for winding it which involved a weekly visit. The clock is still on view in the upstairs room although not in its original position. It was in 1880 that the registrar, George Moore Smith, produced drawings of tables for the meeting room. The proposal was for two long curved tables in three sections to be placed along each side of the length of the room, connected at the West end by a raised table and dias for the chairman. The other end was left open for access to a central table for the Registrars use. The tables were made in English oak and the tops lined with American hide cloth. Charles Andrews was paid £31.00 for the privilege of making these. They are still in place today and determine the layout and perspective of the room. There is no mention of the two dozen arm chairs used with them which bear the mark “J G 149”. This evidently indicated that they were made in the Waltham Forest area of London by John Gomme of later “G Plan” furniture fame. It would appear that by 1890 matting had been laid over the floor as a double thickness of brown paper was laid under it, possibly as an easy way

TThe Town Hall (part two)

of collecting the dust and grit that filtered through the matting. It was an intensely cold winter in 1890 and the Governors attention was drawn to the inadequate heating. As this affected anyone using the meeting room, including the Governors, they decided to use 4 inch diameter hot water pipes along each side of the room. Mr Amies of Peterborough installed the system, but where the boiler that supplied the hot water was situated is a mystery. This was the last work carried out by the Governors of the Town Revenues as with the advent of the Urban and Rural District Councils which took over a lot of their duties. The Charity Commissioners therefore formed a new scheme to administer the charity money being received by the Governors. This scheme was adopted by the Governors in 1898 and came under the title of the Town Land Charities, thus bringing to a close 230 years of the Governors tenure. To be continued…

We know it can be daunting and off putting to try and come in alone. We would like to invite you to our Pilgrim course. It is described below. Even if all you want is to put a toe in the water and just come once to see if it is for you, that is fine, no one will push you or expect you to do anything except come. If you would like someone to help you break the ice on your first visit then please telephone Revd. Nigel or Revd. Gill (their contact details are at the end of this article) and they will ask someone to help you over that first hurdle of actually coming to a meeting Pilgrim “A Course for the Christian Journey” This course is designed to help you discover this Christian way of life. It unpacks the basic message and teaching of the Christian faith, and also shows you how to pray and how to live like Jesus. It does this in a way that is reflective and conversational. No one will force the pace. But this course will change the perspective of your life; it might also change its direction.

All meetings are from 7.30 to 9.00 pm.

We are pilgrims in life and faith.

Have you ever wondered about Christianity? Are you or have you been nervous about coming into Church or unsure what being a Christian is all about?

This season has already seen some fine sport coming from a whole host of waters around the Whittlesey area. Stillwaters including Kingsland, Decoy, Float Fish Farm, Northey

Park and Railway Lakes have all fished as well as I can remember through the summer. Now anglers have been turning their attention to fenland drains and they have been just as good. Forget about the weed at Cock Bank, the tench and bream are on the feed, particularly at the Burnt House Bridge area. If you are after really big bream then follow in Richard Butler’s foot steps. He has been fishing the Twenty Foot Drain and has already bagged some big tench and bream topped off with a massive double figure fish taken on worm and caster, a genuine fish of a

lifetime. Double figure carp are regularly taken but to catch a big bream is not easy on any natural venue. Don’t forget the Whittlesey AA club matches, they now have a very varied fixture list to suit all anglers and also run junior events, all listed in the 2014/15 club handbook.

Like many good ideas, the practicalities of a project turns out somewhat different. Whittlesea Street Pride had an idea of another ‘Gateway Project’ some 14 months ago; we thought a project which would enhance a ‘Gateway’ with minimal maintenance would be a good idea. A disabled friendly, environmental friendly, bird resistant, and as good as vandal resistant project, would fit – so we came up with a ‘Picnic Bench’ which was made out of 2,000 recycled plastic bottles, some robust cycle racks and an extra dustbin. The long haul to obtain permission was put into action. The funding of the project would be a challenge and the logistics of the build would come into play. We obtained the necessary permissions; our group, lead by Bernie Gray-Esson, put together a very robust business case for funding from EDF/Glassmoor Wind Turbine – environment fun,and we were successful in our bid. The late autumn and winter was not a good time to start the groundwork, and by early spring our original contractor let us down and we had to start over in getting another council approved contractor – our big thanks to Paul Jakes at N&J Specialists (Whittlesey), who has made a very good job of the site. If you go past the Ramsey Road railway crossing, you will see the project in the Layby.Whittlesea Street Pride will keep the area clean and tidy, we mow the grass and collect litter at least three times a week. Our boat in the layby is due for a major overhaul or replacement – hopefully later this year. The sponsor for this site is Paul at Briggate

Service Garage on Ramsey Road, without help from sponsors like Paul; we would not be able to maintain these Gateway projects. Finally we would like to thank EDF/Glassmoor Wind Turbine environmental fund for their support of this project. Please stop by and enjoy the Fen landscape, and you may even see some hunting birds!

Get in touch...... Brian Smithyman (Pastor of Whittlesey Christian Church, Broad Street) Church Office: 01733 752093 Brian’s Mobile: 07976 957793 Email: [email protected] Church Website: www.whittlesey.cc

In 2012 we ran a very successful Alpha Course which, according to the feedback, was deeply appreciated by those who attended it. Unfortunately, due to the extensive remodelling of our church we were unable to hold this event again in 2013. With the remodelling now complete we are able to once again offer it to the community.

WHY SHOULD YOU ATTEND ALPHA? A Philosopher once said “if Jesus was not real then the Christian message is the greatest lie ever to be propagated, if however, Jesus was real then all humanity owes it to themselves to at the least seek to understand His message” The Alpha Course gives you the opportunity to explore the relevance of Jesus Christ and the Christian message in a relaxed, non-threatening and unpressured environment. It gives you the opportunity to discuss issues and ask the questions that are important to you. The first session begins with a buffet and brief overview of the Alpha Course, after which you are free to either register to continue or not to take it any further. No pressure is ever placed on anyone, so you really have nothing to lose by attending this first ‘Taster Session’. There is no charge for either the buffet or the Alpha Course itself and no formal offerings will be taken. All

relevant material will be provided free of charge.

YOUTH ALPHARunning during the same time but in a different part of the building will be the same course but geared specifically towards youth giving you the opportunity, in a youth friendly environment and with dedicated youth leaders, to explore the Christian message and ask the questions that are important to you.

WHAT CAN YOU DO NOW?Register your initial interest and we will send you more details nearer the time. You can register your interest by telephoning the church office, Brian’s Mobile or via email, all listed below. Should you require any further information please do not hesitate to speak with Brian on either of the contact details listed belowr.

to prolong the display of colour well into early autumn.• Take advantage of the dry weather by painting fences, sheds and other wooden features with a preservative. Replace broken glass panes in greenhouses and fix leaking shed roofs before the autumn rains. Greenhouse guttering can also be checked to ensure it is not blocked with debris. • Clean up patios and hard surfaces to get rid of moss and algae. Doing this job now will prevent them becoming slippery during the winter.• Mow lawns lightly to avoid too much drying out and rake out old grass. On very hot and sunny days watering should be carried out during the evening to prevent scorching. Also, if you need to feed your lawn do it in the evening when it is cool and water any treatment in well.

Hydrangeas are popular garden shrubs with delicate heads of flowers in shades of pink, white or blue and provide pretty autumn colour and leaf shape. The mophead and lace-cap hydrangeas are best known for their ability to change colour in different soils.

Plant of the month facts

ugust, along with July, is usually one of the hottest months of the year - making watering essential. Traditionally holiday-time, August may be the month you need to enlist the help of friends and family to look after the garden while you are away. When you are at home, take the time to prune summer-flowering shrubs.• Cut back the foliage and stems of herbaceous plants that have already died back (e.g. Dicentra). Hardy geraniums can be cut back a little to remove tired leaves and encourage a new flush of growth. Prune climbing and rambling roses once the flowers have finished. Don’t cut off the flower heads of ornamental grasses - these will provide winter interest.• Don’t neglect hanging baskets - deadheading, watering and feeding will help them last through until autumn. Deadhead plants such as Dahlia, Roses and Penstemon and bedding

Healthy Organs !

! !This month we will highlight a few simple ways to maintain the health of you organs responsible for cleaning your blood, i.e. the lungs, kidneys, liver and spleen. !The lungs are essentially an exchange vessel where oxygen and carbon dioxide filter through in opposite directions. Like any filter, it can get clogged up thus affecting both its function and health. The particles responsible include pollutants such as tobacco, components of car fuses, etc and foreign bodies such bacteria, fungus, bits of food, etc. To clean a household filter we would rinse it under clean water. We can use the same principle with our lungs by spending regular time in the countryside with the fresh clean country air. This is why many city dwellers comment on their improved breathing ability following a trip into the countryside.

The same concept can be applied to our kidneys although lets substitute breathing fresh air for drinking water. The intricate network of tubes that form our kidneys can also become clogged up. Drinking plenty of water helps flush through any resident particles and maintains the health of our kidneys. !

From last month we learnt that the liver is simply a detoxifier. It breaks down toxic components into its benign parts before releasing them into the blood stream for excretion. The best way to maintain its health is simple, reduce its work load! This means reduce the amount of toxic components we inhale or ingest. We defined toxic components as anything that is synthetic (i.e. not produced in the body) and would adversely affect the body’s function if it were to accumulate. Some examples include medication, recreational drugs, additives in the food / drink and cosmetic products, cleaning products and pollutants. !Finally, remember the age old saying, ‘use it or loss it’. This applies to our spleen. The spleen is the largest immune organ in our body and is the site where white blood cells (our immune cells) are produced and stored. In the modern world we are very quick to help our immune system with many pharmaceutical products from lemsip, benylin to antibiotics. We do this for convenience. However by helping too earlier we sideline the spleen and thus it gets weaker and less efficient. Giving our spleen a chance to work helps keep it healthy as this is what it was designed to do. Clearly there comes a point where pharmaceutical products are required but is that point the moment we feel a sore throat or a sniff in our nose. No pain no gain as they say. !We hope this article has made you think about how you can help yourself by making some very simple changes. Enjoy the final months of summer.

The lungs are essentially an exchange vessel where oxygen and carbon dioxide filter through in opposite directions.

From last month we learnt that the liver is simply a detoxifier. Pet Parasites?

As we are a vets, we often hear people say that their pet hasn’t ever had fleas. When in fact you just probably haven’t seen one. Only a small percentage of the flea population can be found on your pet, the rest will live in your carpets and soft furnishings. So if you are treating your pets (and if you treat one you must treat them all), you should treat your house too.

Your pets can contract parasites in lots of different ways:• Out on walks - ticks lie and wait for a passing dog or cat to jump on to• In contact with other animas, fleas don’t have a preferred host and they like cats and dogs, even hedgehogs. So even if your pet don’t meet other animals on walks, there are all kids of wild animals that come into the garden• We can carry them on our clothes, for example we can carry worm eggs on our shoes, dogs and cats walk where we walk, and then they lick or wash their paws and can ingest the eggs.

There are lots of different treatments on the market to treat fleas ticks and worms. If you want one that works, the prescription types you can get from your vets are the best. These are licensed and are proven to work, where as store bought

products in many cases don’t work and can often be dangerous if used incorrectly. From your vet you can purchase ‘spot on’ treatments which are applied directly to the skin usually once a month, and these can protect against ticks fleas, and in the cases of cats, even worms. It can also come in a tablet form, this is excellent for people with children, as the treatment is ingested and there aren’t any greasy spots left on the coat. It’s also advisable when treating all your pets, that you treat the environment too. There are lots of house treatments, and you must remember to spray all soft furnishing, under your sofa, the carpets and any bedding the animal has been on should be washed on a hot wash (min 60 degrees centigrade). Afterwards you will need to hoover up where you have treated. If you suspect your pet may have fleas, you can call see us at Whittlesey Veterinary Centre. Flea and worming consultations are free if you are purchasing a product. The vet can weigh your pet and give them a quick health check and prescribe the correct medication for your pets type and weight.

It’s the summer and for most pet owners this is when our pets be-come noticeably bothered by Fleas! Even the most pampered pets are susceptible to the common flea.

Discovering Whittlesea 10 years on!

This month marks a special date for our publication - it’s been ten years since we first came through your letterboxes. Of course the magazine has seen many changes over that time. Let us take you on a little journey through time... 2004 saw the Republic of Ireland becoming the first country in the world to ban smoking in all work places, including bars and restaurants, a 163-metre high radio mast in Peterborough collapses in a fire, AND The Whittlesey Advertiser is launched, a free local, monthly directory for the folk of Whittlesey. This early version didn’t have articles, but instead was full of local businesses and trademen. It was a black and white publication, and as you can see by the front cover, it promoted businesses that are still running today. Let’s jump forward two years to July 2006, and the Whittlesey Advertiser has had a facelift; it is now in colour and reaches more homes. But it was in 2009, when the magazine merged with Discover Whittlesey to become Discovering Whittlesey, that that publication really

started to be adopted by the community. Andy and his team worked tirelessly to bring local news, and a flick through the November 2009 issue shows community groups who we are still working with such as Whittlesea Street Pride, Whittlesey Christian Church and Geoff Oldfield, our resident historian. Many of the businesses are still supporting us today, and believe me there are far too many to name here. By the time I arrived as Editor in 2010, the magazine was a much-loved and anticipated publication. Now in 2014 the magazine has grown so much that we have sister publications in March and Bourne.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the latest American superhero film to hit our TV screens. Featuring the Marvel Comics character Captain America, and produced by Marvel Studios, it’s the sequel to 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger and the ninth instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Hayley Atwell and Samuel L. Jackson. The modern world has come as quite a shock to Captain America (Chris Evans). During ‘Avengers Assemble’, he was astonished to find that S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) had not been entirely honest. Two years on from the events of that film, he’s bonded with Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) but still struggles to find his place in the 21st century. Now his misgivings about S.H.I.E.L.D. multiply when senior agent Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford) reveals a rather troubling agenda.

As our clean-cut hero becomes embroiled in a dark political conspiracy, he teams up with soaring superhero and kindred spirit The Falcon (Anthony Mackie) to take on the mysterious Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan). Inspired by classic conspiracy thrillers of the seventies, this eagerly anticipated Marvel superhero sequel blends awesome spectacle with provocative moral complexity. So successful was the film that a sequel is set to be directed by the Russo brothers and released in May 2016.

Ten Years AgoTen years ago we had just lost Johnny Cash and Steve Jobs was still in charge of Apple (the company – not Gwyneth Paltrow’s baby). Blair and Bush were in power we were about to lose Christopher Reeve. Facebook was born, we still had confidence in banks and a property portfolio. Now some say we have no Cash, no Jobs and no Superman!

It is said that an accountant looks at the past, a solicitor the present, and a financial adviser looks to the future. So let’s think about 10 years from now. Think about how old you will be, whether you will be working, retired and what you would like to be doing with your time and finances.

Speculating is one thing, putting a plan to-gether is another – but actually committing to it and regularly reviewing your plan is where it becomes a reality. Things to consider include whether you will have any liabilities at that time e.g. a mortgage or further education costs. How will your health stand up, what will your retire-ment plans look like?

There is a great tool available to help – we call it

cash flow management, it is rather more dynamic than a spreadsheet on a computer screen, you can try out various scenarios to test whether you are likely to run out of money maintaining your standard of living by trying ‘what if’ scenarios.

A common request being ‘what if inflation goes up to 5% again’ and ‘what if I retire at age 60’?

Then you can play about with the rate of growth your investments and pension funds grow at and compare this with current expectations. The great thing is that the results are displayed in easy to understand graphs or pictures. The software I use is professional quality and can form the basis of an annual review as we work towards Later Life Advice – the area of advice that I specialise in.

If you would like some help shaping the next ten years – give me a call to arrange a free initial consultation. There are no guarantees in predict-ing the future, as we know from experience.

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or any other debt secured on it.

The value of the investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back as much as you put in.

LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY

There are two Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) that you may enter into. One deals with your Health and Welfare the other deals with your Financial Affairs. You may decide that you require one or both of these. The important criteria is that you are over the age of 18 years and have the mental capacity to know that you are giving to another person the right to step into your shoes and make decisions on your behalf. Unlike a General Power of Attorney, a Lasting Power of Attorney has to be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before the Attorney has authority to act on your behalf.Health & Welfare Lasting Power of AttorneyYou may appoint one or more persons to act on your behalf either jointly or individually. The persons appointed will be able to look after• Your daily routine

• Medical Care• Moving to a care home• Your medical treatment both with your GP and in hospital This LPA may only be used if you are unable to make your own decisions.Property & Financial Affairs Lasting Power of AttorneyAgain, you may appoint one or more persons to act on your behalf either jointly or individually. The persons appointed will be able to look after• Paying your bills• Collecting your benefits/pension• Assisting you in selling your homeThis type of LPA may be used as soon as it is registered with the Court of Protection as long as you are happy for your Attorney to act on your behalf.

If you would care to discuss making either of these LPA’s one of our specialist lawyers would more than happy to talk you through the procedure.

NEWS FROM THE R.B.L.On the 7th of June we held a dance at Whittlesey Leisure Centre to commemorate the 70th anniversary of “ D “ Day. Just under 200 people attended and were entertained by the Rutland Big Band who played many Glen Miller hits from the wartime era. Other turns included Michael Knight, a very talented vocalist and the Peterborough Highland Band with their pipes and drums and highland dancers. This was a very lively and entertaining evening and the profits of £400.00 will be going to the Royal British Legion Whittlesey Branch. A special commemorative service, for the outbreak of the Great War, was held at St. Mary's Church on Friday the 27th of June. Local dignitaries, branch members, 7 Standards and members of the public shared hymns, prayers, poems and stories of that time. In the previous issue we spoke of Sir Edward Grey's words....the lights are going out all over Europe.....and now the RBL Headquarters at Haig House, London are launching a new initiative called LIGHTS OUT and is encouraging everyone in the UK to turn off their lights between 10pm and 11pm on August 4th 2014 leaving on only a single light or candle for this symbolic act of reflection and hope. To help this along Marks and Spencers will be selling a special centenary candle from the 4th July with all proceeds going to the RBL. There is a special branch of the RBL of motorcycle enthusiasts called the RBL Riders, who nationally have a membership of over 5,000 and raise money for the Poppy Appeal. A number of members from the Eastern Region will be carrying out an act of remembrance over a period of the next 7 years to individually remember all 876 of those who gave their lives during WW1 whilst serving in the Cambridgeshire Regiment. This commemorative project is called Cambs 876 Remembered. The first of those to be remembered is Cpl. Arthur

Cecil Rawson who lost his life on 9th August 1914 and is buried in Whittlesey cemetery. The Riders will visit the cemetery on 9th August 2014 when a service of remembrance will take place at 11.00 AM. If anyone wishes to attend we will be assembling at the Ivy Leaf Club at 10.00 AM on Saturday 9th August. As you can see it is a very busy time for the RBL and we look forward to bringing you details of events in further issues.

Whittlesey Allotment and Gardeners Society will be holding their annual Autumn Event on Sunday 14th September 2014 at the St John’s Ambulance Hall, Plough Road, Whittlesey. The hall will be open to accept entries between 8am and 11am and judging starts at 11.30am. Refreshments will be served whilst judging is taking place and we will also be holding a raffle. There will be classes for fruit and vegetables, baking and preserving with several classes for children as well. This is a friendly family event, open to anyone within the Whittlesey Town Council area. Entry forms and more details will be available from 14 July on our website: www.spanglefish.com/whittleseyallotmentandgardenerssociety They will also be at various locations around Whittlesey – watch out for our posters . Our August meeting is being held at the St John’s Hall on Thursday 14th August from 7.30pm. Unfortunately Mr Al Perna from Peterborough Horticultural Society had to postpone his talk on growing and preparing vegetables for show which was going to happen in July. He will be attending the August meeting

instead. Entry is free and refreshments will be served.

Whittlesey Allotment and Gardeners Society

The action group are hugely disappointed to announce that on the 25th of June at the FDC planning committee meeting, the members voted to approve the new planning application F/YR14/0365/0 by five votes to four. We presented a robust case to refuse the application along with WTC and Delph flood wardens. Our Whittlesey committee members vigorously questioned the two highway specialists that attended, who could not answer specific questions raised. Our group feels that the whole process of this application was fast tracked. The weight of localism against this proposal wasn’t highlighted and even Stephen Barclay’s letter opposing this application was not read out. We believe that NPPF procedures were not properly followed and we have written a letter to the parliamentary, under secretary of state for planning, Nick Boles MP, to call in this application. He has the power to take over planning applications rather than letting the local authority decide. If any residents feel the same way as the

action group, we ask you to write or email to Nick Boles to request the under Secretary of State for planning "calls in" and ask for a full independent investigation in to why Fenland District Council and planning members decided to approve the application.

Use reference: Planning application number F/YR14/0365/OLand North of Snowley Park & Glenfields, Whittlesey.

|Community news by N Baker, Deputy Headteacher Alderman Jacobs school

Poetic Genius on our DoorstepOn Friday 4th July representatives from local schools came together to celebrate the poetic talent in Whittlesey. The event was held in the towns Norwich and Peterborough building society that had been running a poetry competition open to all the young people in the town. The society had received over 120 entries and their mortgage advisor had selected the winners and invited them as well as their families to the event. The Alderman Jacobs School were very proud to receive 7/10 of the prizes and the overall winner was Grace Baxter also from Alderman Jacobs School. Her poem about the sacrifices made by those who fought in the war was particularly powerful especially in today’s climate. As part of the evening the customer consultant of the Whittlesey Branch read some of his own poems that were also very inspiring.

The Poppy by Grace Baxter

The poppies are redTo remember the dead. We’ve all been in mourningSince the war’s dawning.

They did it for me, they did it for meThey sacrificed everythingSo that I could be free.

The firing of gunsCame from the Huns. For them there was no gain,Only cried of pain.

They did it for me, they did it for meThey sacrificed everythingSo that I may be free.

Their homes were trenches.Their beds, hard as benches.Only on Christmas dayDid they stop fighting to play.

They did it for me, they did it for meThey sacrificed everythingSo that I could be free.

The poppies are redWe remember the deadAnd those who gave up everything,So that we could be FREE!

|Community news

Zambian Orphanage Project The Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street loves to serve the local community and surrounding areas but also extends its support to overseas Missions work. Their chosen charity is an African orphanage project in Zambia which they have supported for a number of years. Recently a group from the church had the opportunity of spending two weeks at the orphanage to experienced first-hand how the children live and to also identify their current areas of need. One of the group who visited the orphanage, Liz Cooke said ‘When we arrived we could see how little they had. Their only source of water was by means of lowering a bucket into a 20 ft well. The water pump that had previously supplied them with fresh water had broken, and the borehole had collapsed. Due to the limited water supply they were unable to grow many crops or vegetables to feed themselves. We knew the repair of this borehole had to be high on our list of priority items to be addressed on returning home’. Since this visit, the fantastic news is that because of various donations we have not only covered the cost of the necessary repairs, but a much larger storage tank has been added to the previous smaller one which means they now have a constant supply of fresh water for the orphans and are also able to irrigate the

crops in order to feed the children The purpose of the visit was also to establish ways in which the adults, who live within the grounds of the orphanage, could become self-sufficient by teaching them new skills. The team took three sewing-machines and various fabrics with the aim of teaching some of the ladies how to sew. Christine Price, one of the group who was in charge of this project, said, ‘We were absolutely amazed at how keen they were to learn how to use the sewing machines. They mastered them very quickly and were confidently producing items including bags, aprons and even items of clothing in a matter of days. They are now able to make clothes for the children and themselves and they can also make additional items which can be sold as a source of income’. Other members of the team were also busy spending time with the orphans. Every day there was a programme for the children which included games, songs, fun activities, colouring, puppet shows and reading books that the team had brought with them for the school that is located within the orphanage grounds. While it was very humbling to see how the children live, the real blessing to each member of the group was the joy and zeal of the orphans, despite their hardship. They were always happy and really appreciated everything the group

Trio of Pipe Bands to perform at the Whittlesey Festival

Crowds at the Whittlesey Festival on Sunday 7 September will be treated to the spectacular sound of three Pipe bands. The Massed bands incorporating Peterborough Highland Pipe Band, Sutherland Pipes and Drums, and Bedford Pipes and Drums are all uniformed marching bands that have been promoting Scottish Highland music through public performance for many years. What a wonderful opportunity to see all three bands present their own unique performances on the day. This is guaranteed to be an amazing experience not to be missed as the powerful, poignant sound of pipes and drums fills the air. Also new to the Festival is the Royal British Legion Riders Branch (Eastern Region) with their motorcycles on display. This year they are involved in a commemorative project called ‘Cambs 876 Remembered’ where the Riders intend to honour all 876 Officers and Soldiers of the Cambridgeshire Regiment who were killed during World War one by riding to each and every memorial where possible( including one in Whittlesey) on the 100th anniversary of each individuals passing. The Festival runs from 10am – 5pm starting with a parade from Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street and is truly a fun day out for all the family. Many of the fairground rides are free

were able to input into their lives and some real friendships were established. Brian Smithyman, Pastor of the Whittlesey Christian Church said ‘it is a real privilege to support the orphanage in whatever way we can. Our church is passionate about making a difference in their lives and we look forward to our ongoing contact with them’.

If you would like further information about the Zambian Orphanage project please contact the church office on 01733 752093 or email [email protected].

as children can enjoy the bouncy castle and bouncy slide as well as the Junior Victorian Swing Boats. Why not test your skills in the Football Speed Cage and see if you can beat your personal best or opponents score? There is also lots of fun to be had with the ‘stocks’ provided by the Rotary Club. There is a full Programme of Music in St Mary’s Church and the Churchyard Green starting from 11.20 am with a variety of music to suit all tastes. Don’t forget the Beautiful Baby Competition at the Ivy Leaf Club where you could win a Portrait sitting courtesy of ‘The Studio’ in Whittlesey. The age categories are 0-12 months and 13 months – 2 years. Registration is at 11.30am, judging at 12.00 and prizes will be awarded at 12.30 by the Mayor of Whittlesey, Councillor David Mason. Come and support the local Schools Art Exhibition from 10am onwards at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street, you’ll be blown away by the impressive artwork produced by talented students in our community. These are just a selection of things going on during the Festival – there is so much more to do and see and we look forward to seeing you there. If you would like more information about the Festival please contact Pauline Edge on 01733 208414 or Jenny Parker on 01733 351005.

It was touch and go all week on the weather front prior to the 2014 Friends of AJS Summer Fete held on Saturday 12th July. We only decided to go with our dry weather plan the day before, and then kept our fingers crossed all night for some sun. We were rewarded with a scorching hot fete day for the second year running. The fun started right away with Peter Burrow, The POSH mascot, officially opening the fete. He then joined us in the arena for photo's with the children. We estimate over 1,000 people joined us on the day, consuming over 400 burgers & hotdogs and over 800 drinks, whilst listening to some great tunes courtesy of Don and his steel drums. This year we arranged the fete around a central arena area, which allowed us to showcase some of the activities the children have been working hard on - including choir, recorders and a great performance by the early years children showing off their dancing skills. We were also joined by Lynn from The Manor for a Zumba demonstration, and Barry from Reptile Mania who brought along Nanya and Big Daddy! The highlight of the arena activity was a kids v adults tug-of-war competition, which the children won convincingly! Support from the local community has been outstanding this year, with well over fifty prizes donated by local businesses to our prize draw raffle and lucky Ducky game, which enabled us to raise a substantial amount of money in

the lead up to the fete and on the day. Special mention should go to Malcolm James, The Full Boar Catering Company and Sonogoan who donated the three top prizes. We would like to say a big, big thank you to all the local businesses who gave prizes, gifts for goody bags and joined us on the day holding stalls. We are proud to be able to support our locally based charities and were joined by several on the day, who were then able to raise funds for their causes. The ladies from ‘Defibrillators for all’ told us they had a lovely day, and raised a substantial sum of money towards a new defibrillator, which will help saves lives within our community. The friends of AJS team started planning the fete back in February, and a lot of hard work is required to pull it all off. The fete is a real team effort involving FOAJS, Partners, children, grandparents, teachers and school staff. Feedback from people who came was really positive and makes all the effort well worth it. At the time of going to press the total amount raised was still to be confirmed, but we are hoping for a record breaking total, which has been boosted by an amazing £1,000 cheque presented to us by Nisa . The final thanks should go to all the adults and children who came along on the day and spent so generously. Join our Facebook page, Friends of AJS, to keep up to date with future events.

PPG presence at Jenner Surgery

From September 2014, on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month, members of the PPG (Patient Participation Group) will be present at the Jenner Health Centre from 1000 to 1200.They will be there to chat to patients, to obtain feedback on their visit that day and to discuss any suggestions patients have to make regarding the practice. Please note , patients will NOT be asked to complete a lengthy questionnaire! This is seen as an opportunity for patients to meet members of the PPG and to have an input into the way the practice works .They can also find out more about the group ,whose objective is to help realise the expectations of the patients, within the means of the practice. The PPG cannot function properly without the input of patients , so if you are asked for your views on a Tuesday morning as you leave the surgery, please help us to help you.

Children Dress Up & Dance for Macmillan Cancer SupportNew Road Primary School took part in Dress up and Dance in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support on Friday 27th June 14. All the children and staff enthusiastically joined in the nationwide fundraising day to raise money for this important charity. The children were asked to come to school dressed up in the clothes they like to dance in and make a donation to Macmillan Cancer

Support. Dancing is a great way to get everyone moving and having fun at the same time, so its very good aerobic exercise. Each of our classes learned a dance routine of their choice and we all came together in the afternoon to share our dances. Mrs Emily Hawke, Class Teacher at New Road School and organizer of the fund-raising event said ‘Macmillan are a fantastic charity and very

close to the hearts of many of our staff and children. We wanted to do something to raise money and have fun at the same time. New Road School are very pleased to have raised £106 for Macmillan Cancer Support.’
