By Pete Rios Imagine if a company want-ed to start a project right here in Arizona that would help our economy by offering: • 250-300 high wage jobs • Millions of dollars in tax revenues to state and local jurisdictions • The sale of State Trust Land for this project would provide schools with an extra $60 million • $300 million in capital in-

vestment • The potential for thousands of additional local jobs in the areas of cargo handling, man-ufacturing, warehousing and trucking due to the success of this project • Taking three semi trailers off the road for every rail car fi led with goods. Now imagine the State of Arizona turning this opportu-nity away. The project is the Union

Railyard holdup hurting PinalPacifi c Red Rock Project lo-cated along I-10 north of the Red Rock Community. This positive economic engine for Pinal County and surrounding counties currently languishes with the Arizona State Land Department and Governor Jan Brewer. The fi rst question to come to mind is: why? The Union Pacifi c Red Rock Project is now stalled by the state for a variety of per-ceived issues. One of those is the Arizona State Land Department’s ambiguous goal of putting the land to the “highest and best use.” Plac-

ing an industrial transporta-tion project on acres of barren land located next to a busy freeway and railroad tracks would seem a logical use of this state property. The land in question is already zoned for industrial and commercial purposes in the Pinal County Comprehensive Plan. In an effort to continually stall the project, State Land has asked for a myriad of extra reports and studies, al-though Union Pacifi c studies have shown this land to be a perfect location for such an operation. State Land is also relying on data supplied by an

economic analyst report that was rife with fallacies, misin-formation and long shot sup-positions by the author. The author of this misguided re-port failed to consult commu-nity and government leaders and local landowners in their effort to fi nd relevant data. The Union Pacifi c Red Rock Project is in railroad terms: a classifi cation yard. What this means is that trains coming into the area with its boxcars loaded with good and materials would be placed in the yard. The Union Pacifi c would then place these box-cars on a train that would take them to their ultimate destina-tion. There is no off-loading of materials at this stop. Us-ing this method at this loca-tion means less trucks are needed to haul these products and lower shipping costs to the consumer. This project is considered important for the long-term strategic planning for the future of the region. Pinal County would be the site of the largest classifi cation yard in the southwest por-tion of the United States. We

would be a key player in the economic viability of rail service between Texas and California. Support for this project ex-tends far past the boundaries of Pinal County. The state legislature gathered 83 per-cent of their members votes to support the classifi cation yard. Many local city and town councils have passed resolutions supporting this project. The question remains: why are Governor Brewer, the Ari-zona State Land Department and the Arizona Commerce Authority dragging their heels on a project that has the best interests of Pinal County and the State of Arizona at hand? We have a golden opportunity to create high paying jobs in a time when we need them the most. The land is right and the time is right. The highest and best use of this land is for the people of Pinal County and the State of Arizona. Pete Rios is a member of the Pinal County Board of Supervisors and a former legislator.

By Mila Besich-Lira A female in her 50’s was killed Sunday evening when she was struck by a diesel truck on US Highway 60. At press time the Superior Police and Fire Departments had responded to the accident but full details were not

available. The name of the victim or the driver has not been released pending notifi cation of the her family and investigation. The driver of the truck was given a toxicology screening and will be evaluated in order to fully

complete the investigation. Superior Police Department had requested a special investigation unit to assist with the investigation. Pinal County Sheriffs and Department of Public Safety were also on the scene.

Pedestrian accident kills local Superior woman

By Mila Besich-Lira Manuel Ramos the Chief Operating Offi cer of ASARCO LLC has announced that the company is offering a $50,000 cash reward to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and convictions of the person(s) who were involved with the theft of the copper anodes. To date the Arizona Department of Public Safety has recovered $2,000,000 worth of the copper that was stolen from the ASARCO Hayden Facility. The copper was tracked to a ranch in Tucson where it was then shipped to a scrap metal dealer in Upland California. The scrap metal dealer

was then sending it to Hong Kong via the ship. With the help of customs and border protection agents the ship was turned around and the copper has been returned to America. ASARCO commended the ongoing efforts of the DPS in a recently submitted press release. Investigators expect to

indict at least 12 people involved in the theft. Those who have information on the theft are urged to contact 520-306-1188. Information can be given anonymously however the notice of the reward explains that ASARCO may not be able to maintain the anonymity of informant.

The Superior Optimist Club will host its eighth annual Miracle on Main St. Christmas Parade on Saturday, Dec.1, 2012. The event will begin at 3 p.m. with food booths opening and entertainment. The theme of the parade and event this year is Christmas in Superior. Event organizers felt that

this theme would be a good theme for everyone to participate in the parade and celebrate the many traditions of Christmas in Superior. The Optimist would like to encourage families, clubs and businesses to enter the parade. There is no fee to participate in the parade; entries can be floats,

Optimist Club Annual Miracle on Main St. coming soonvehicles or equestrian. Non-motorized entries will need to make special arrangements. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three entries: $100 for first place, $75 for second place and $50 for third place. The entertainment for this year is focused on celebrating the many talents of Superiorites. If you love to sing, dance,

or act consider signing up for the Superior Has Talent Showcase. Baile Folklorico Alma de Superior is already scheduled to perform that afternoon at 4 p.m. Any local nonprofit group wishing to host a fundraising or educational booth during the event may do so at no charge but may be required to pay other

permit fees to the Town of Superior or Pinal County depending on the type of booth. This year the club will be hosting a Best Cookie contest. The categories for the best cookie contest are Best Chocolate Chip, Best Oatmeal Cookie, Best Decorated Cookie and Best Other Holiday Cookie. A $25 gift card will be

For the last seven years, Superior Fire Department has committed itself to making sure that every child in Superior has a toy for Christmas. They need the community’s help to ensure they can continue to honor their commitment. Santa will drive around

town for six hours, stopping every time a child comes out to greet him. Every child that comes out to see Santa receives a toy. The fire truck that carries Santa is outfitted with over 5,000 Christmas lights and a snow machine. Donations of $2 -

$5, toys, gift cards or checks will ensure that no child who comes out to see Santa will be disappointed. Larger toys will be distributed through the Police Department’s Angel Tree program. Donations can be left with the Superior Fire

By Chase KampCopper Area News The voters of Pinal County have spoken: the results of the 2012 general election showed a number of incumbents falling short to prevailing challengers, while a few party favorites stood fast. The unofficial tallies from the County elections office at press time indicated there would be some new faces in Florence. The newly expanded five-seat County Board of Supervisors was shaken up and tinted red. In District 1, Dem. Pete Rios managed to retain his seat by a healthy margin, defeating his two opponents Gem Cox (R) and Alicia Bristow (I) by grabbing nearly half the vote. However, District 3 Dem. David Snider fell short against Rep. challenger Stephen Miller. The final tally showed Miller with 46.8 percent of the vote to Snider’s 41.5, a difference of about 800 votes. The rest of the Board is also going to the

Republicans. Cheryl Chase won the District 2 seat against Dem. Margo Feldmiller, pulling down nearly two-thirds of the vote in the San Tan Valley area. Rep. Anthony Smith prevailed against Henry Wade in District 4, which consists of parts of Maricopa and a wide swath of southern Pinal County. Smith won 59 percent of the vote to Wade’s 42 percent. Rep. Todd House defeated Maxine Brown (D) in District 5, which is made of Apache Junction, Gold Canyon and Queen Valley. House won 60 percent of the vote, winning by a margin of about 4,000 votes. After a particularly fiery campaign, Rep. Lando Voyles defeated incumbent Dem. James Walsh for the County Attorney seat with 53 percent of the vote. Incumbent and Voyles co-campaigner Sheriff Paul Babeu and was handily re-elected with more than 53 percent of the vote, while incumbent County Treasurer Dolores

In the Congressional races, Ann Kirkpatrick (D) will be returning to Washington. She won her race for the CD-1 seat over Jonathan Paton (R) by three points. Rep. Paul Gosar easily won his race in CD-4, returning to Washington after representing the previous CD-1 district. In the state legislature, both Democrats and Republicans saw victories. Dem. Barbara McGuire defeated Rep. Joe Ortiz in the LD-8 Senate race, while Rep. Al Melvin defeated Dem. Jo Holt for the LD-11 Senate. Duos of old and new Republicans reigned supreme in the state House races, however. In LD-11, incumbent Steve Smith (R) and newcomer Adam Kawasman (R) won their House seats. In a tight LD-8 race, incumbent Frank Pratt (R) won alongside T.J. Shope (R) by margins of about one thousand votes against Democrats Ernest Bustamante and Emily Verdugo. The winners in the

Oracle Elementary School Board race were Linda Thomas, Jeffrey McClure and Elizabeth Harmon. In the Ray Unified School

District race, Nancy Wilkinson defeated Nancy Magdaleno. In the Oracle Fire District race, the top

five voter winners were Charlotte Poole, Ellie Brown, John Doran, Manuel Navarro and Bud Bristow.

The Legends of Superior Trail Committee will be hosting a community workday on the Canyon Segment of the LOST this Saturday. Volunteers should meet at the entrance to the

Raisin StuffingBy Frank Palazzolowww.nonnamarias.com• 12 cups cinnamon raisin bread cut into 1/4 inch cubes• 1/3 cup olive oil• 1/3 cup applesauce• 3 cups diced onion• 3 cups diced celery• 3/4 cups diced chives• 4 mixed egg whites• 1 1/2 teaspoon salt3/4 teaspoon pepper1 cup chicken broth3 apples1/2 cup dried cranberries4 tsp cinnamonDirectionsPreheat oven to 350oF. Lay out cubed bread into 2 large baking sheets. Bake for 10 minutes ~ until cubes are dry. While the bread is cooling,

Sauté onions and celery in oil for 10 minutes. Add chives to vegetables and sauté an additional 2 minutes. Place bread into a mixing bowl, and add vegetable mix & applesauce to bread cubes and mix well. Pour egg-whites into mixture. Add salt and pepper and stir. Add chicken broth and stir to combine all ingredients. If the stuffing is too dry, add more broth, 1 tablespoon at a time, do not overdo the broth or stuffing will become soggy. Transfer stuffing to a non-stick sprayed 13x9 inch baking dish and bake for approximately 45 minutes. Top with thinly sliced Apples & Dried Cranberries, sprinkle with cinnamon. Mangia!!

Maple Roast TurkeyBy Frank Palazzolowww.nonnamarias.com• 14 pound whole turkey• 2 cups onion diced• salt & pepper to taste• 1 cup chopped celery• 3/4 cup butter• 1 cup carrots• 2 1/2 tsp lemon zest• 2 cups chicken stock• 2 Tbs thyme • 1/3 cup maple syrup• 2 cups apple ciderDirections1. Boil cider & syrup in saucepan for 20 minutes. Remove from heat & mix 1 tablespoon and lemon zest. Add butter & whisk until melted. Add salt & pepper to taste. Cover &

refrigerate until cold.2. Preheat oven to 375oF.3. Wash, dry turkey and place in roasting pan. Slide hand under skin & place 1/2 of syrup mix under skin. Pour remaining mix on the outside of the turkey. Tie turkey legs together with kitchen string loosely..4. Arrange the onion, celery & carrots around turkey in the pan. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon thyme over vegetables. Pour the stock over vegetables. 5. Roast turkey with foil loosely placed on top for 31/2 hours until turkey is at 180oF. Transfer turkey to a platter & let sit for 25 min. Carve & serve.

Directions1. In a large bowl, combine combine sugar, butter, corn syrup, vanilla,cinnamon, salt and nutmeg. Add pea-nuts; toss to coat. Transfer to a greased cookie sheet. 2. Bake at 300° for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown, stirring once. Cool and break apart if necessary.Yum!

Green Bean & Potato SaladBy Frank Palazzolowww.nonnamarias.com• 1 1/2 pounds red potatoes• 3/4 pound green beans• 8 ounces sun-dried tomato• 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil• 1 small red onion

• salt & pepper to taste• 2 Tbs. lemon juice• 1 clove garlic minced• 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oilDirections 1. Place potatoes in large pot with 1 inch of water. Bring to a boil & cook for about 15 min. Throw in green beans to steam

after 10 minutes. Drain, cool and cut potatoes into quarters. Transfer to a large bowl and toss with basil, onion, salt & pepper & tomatoes. Set aside.2. In small bowl whisk lemon juice, garlic, & olive oil. Pour over salad mix & serve. Enjoy!

Cranberry BrushettaBy Frank Palazzolowww.nonnamarias.com• 12 oz. package of fresh cranberries• 1 cup sugar• 2 Tbs freshly squeezed orange juice• 1 Tbs grated orange peel• 3 Tbs Grand Marnier liqueur• 4 ounces of mascarpone cheese• 12 inch loaf french breadDirections

1. In a medium sized sauce-pan over medium heat, dis-solve the sugar in the orange juice. Add the grated orange peel and liqueur. Stir in the cranberries and cook for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and place sauce in a bowl. Cranberry sauce will thicken as it cools. 2. While the sauce cools; Cut the french bread into 1/4 inch slices. Spread the cheese onto the sliced bread and top with cooled sauce.

Dennis Van GorpFamily Life Christian Center In John 17:15, we find Jesus praying, “My prayer is not that You take them out of the world but that You protect them from the evil one.” Psalm 23 tells us: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for You are with me, Your rod and staff comfort me.” When things go bad, our normal request is – God, get me out of this! Afraid for our lives, we only want to be away from the situation. But God, with His great love, carefully guides and directs us through the tur-moil and storms of our life. He is teaching us to trust in His judgment and to have faith in His leading. We must learn to hear His voice as He directs us along the right path.

Each experience we go through becomes a time of learning and maturing. The process is not always easy. Sometimes it is a struggle and time consuming. Re-gardless of the hardships, it builds strength in our heart and stamina in our emotions. We gain the ability to hold on and persevere in the tough times. Personally, we become more conscious of the needs of others and less selfish. We gain confidence to face any obstacle. Why? Because God is walking beside us, keep-ing us safe and showing us which path is the right one. An old song says: I’m learning to lean on Jesus. That is what we are doing: growing stronger in the Lord and walking in faith with Him! We experience peace in the midst of life’s storms, and life becomes a joy in the presence of our Lord.

By Mila Besich-Lira On the eleventh day of the eleventh month at the eleventh hour the Superior Veterans of Foreign wars celebrated Veterans Day 2012. Originally known as Armistice day to remember those who fought in World War One the day eventually became commemorated as Veterans Day to remember all veterans and armed forces. The ceremony began with the greeting by post commander Mike Urquijo he was followed by post Chaplain Art Reyna who gave a brief invocation. The post members and ladies’ auxiliary members presented the remembrance wreaths at the foot of the table for the missing in action and prisoners of war. Commander Urquijo explained the signifi cance

VFW hosts annual Veterans Day ceremonyof each item on the MIA/POW table. The white table cloth symbolizes the purity of their intention and to respond to their country’s call to arms, so that their children can remain free. The lone candle symbolizes the frailty of a prisoner alone, trying to stand up against his oppressors. The black ribbon on the candle reminds of the comrades who will not return. The single rose reminds us of the loved ones and families

that were left behind. The empty chair is reminder of the service member and the Bible is to remind them of their faith. A slice of lemon is on the bread plate to remind us of their bitter fate, salt is on the table which is symbolic of the family’s tears as they wait. The inverted glasses on the table remind us that they cannot toast with us but maybe one day they will. The event was attended by two local active duty

service members Jose Lira a chief in the US Navy and Nicholas Conrad who just completed Army boot camp and was home celebrating his fi rst offi cial Veterans Day. Many veterans and post members also attended. This year the VFW selected guest speakers from the community to accompany their annual ceremony. Hank Gutierrez and former Mayor Michael Hing each spoke about the importance of Veterans Day.

Hing read through a series of presidential speeches. Gutierrez spoke about the importance of the role of the VFW in the community. He encouraged the public to join the VFW and support the auxiliary he stressed that the VFW is an icon for the community and it would be a shame if it were to ever have to close.
