Editor, Superior Sun: Kudos to the team that put on “Superior Has Heart” Sunday to benefi t the American Cancer Society. Thousands of dollars were raised to honor cancer

survivors and those who have passed on. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed the steak dinner that Red Bear Outfi tters generously donated. It shows what can be done

when people come together with a good idea for an important cause and have a barrel full of enthusiasm. Congratulations to all! You made Superior proud!/s/ Bill and Sue Anderson

Editor: I will be asking my elected colleagues to sign a resolution to hold their employees to the same standards of conduct that the Board holds its staff to. The resolution is straightforward: current county employees should resign their position if they intend to run for a paid partisan

political office. Our Board has held this standard for many years and I feel our constituents expect other elected officials to follow suit. Our Pinal County Policy and Procedures 1.30.A, states quite clearly that no county employee “shall be a candidate for nomination or election to any paid

partisan political office.” This is to distinguish from elected officials in their final year of office. Even the federal Hatch Act addresses this issue by proclaiming that “a state or local officer or employee may not be a candidate for elective office.” If the federal government concludes that a county violates the Hatch Act, that

jurisdiction may lose federal funds. I do not want to see the county lose vital funding. Taxpayers should not have to question if a county employee is using your taxpayer dollars, taxpayer funded equipment or transportation to further his or her own campaign. It calls into question whether

they are working or campaigning while fulfilling their duties. The public has the right to expect good government and good policy from Pinal County. They do not need a county official who intends to run for another position to be collecting full time pay while seeking partisan office, raising money

or conducting public events and speaking engagements. It is not my intention of trying to squelch anyone’s passion for public service. Just don’t do it on the taxpayer’s dime. Sincerely,/s/ Pete RiosChairmanPinal County Board of Supervisors

By Mila Lira On Sunday, guests at the fourth annual Superior Has Heart event raised $12,000 for the American Cancer Society once again proving that Superior has a BIG

heart. Over the past three years the committee has raised $27,000. The Tameron Family generously donated the use of the Los Hermanos ball room that was filled

Superior raises $12,000 for American Cancer Societyto capacity with close to 330 people attending the fourth annual event. The local hunting and outdoors group Red Bear Outfitter prepared a steak dinner. During the dinner the Red Bears announced that they were donating all of the steaks which added $400 to the total amount raised. Throughout the afternoon there were several blitz raffles for a Kindle Fire, K-Cup Coffee Machine and flat screen TV/Blu-Ray Combo. The big auction item for the night was a two week condo rental in Hawaii which was donated by Bill and Sue Anderson. Joe Tameron was the highest bidder for the Hawaii condo. There were several items that were raffled throughout the event including gift certificates, gift baskets, golf and hunting equipment. All of the items raffled and auctioned at the event were

donated by individuals and businesses throughout Superior, the Copper Corridor and East Valley. Local DJ Roy Chavez was the master of ceremonies and auctioneer for the event and Superiorites Armer Gomez and Punky Sanchez provided live music during the event. This event is organized to raise money for the American Cancer Society

but it also provides and opportunity for participants to help fight Cancer. With recent statistics showing that one in every three families will have an experience with Cancer the money raised in Superior will be put to good use at the American Cancer Society. Most importantly this event also brings Superior together as a community to help fight Cancer. It is

an opportunity for families to remember those who have lost the battle, those fighting the battle and those who have survived the battle. The Superior Has Heart Event is organized by Mike and Deb McKee, Fred and Karen Murrieta and Mary Macias. At least a dozen or more volunteers assist them throughout the year gathering prizes and preparing for the event.

By Mila Lira It is never too early to start thinking about a future career and with any luck one or two of the preschoolers from the John F. Kennedy Elementary school will become a firefighter or paramedic. The JFK preschool program recently visited the Superior Fire Department after the department invited these youngsters to visit the station. The students had the opportunity to see inside an ambulance as well as try on some of the gear and equipment that Firefighters use. The best attraction for the day for the preschoolers was getting to climb inside the fire truck with the sirens blaring. At the

JFK preschoolers become junior firefighters

end of the tour the students were given coloring books on fire safety and were given certificates naming them Superior’s Junior Firefighters.

By Rev. Dennis Van GorpFamily Life Christian Center The book of Jonah describes a normal, regular guy whom God called to do some work for His Kingdom. By studying Jonah, we can learn something about how God deals with mankind in relation to His plans. God’s plan for Jonah was for him to preach to the city of Nineveh and get them to repent of their evil life style. But Israel and Nineveh were enemies, and he had no intention of helping the enemy. So – he ran away. When we turn our backs on God, our natural tendency is to hang out with the wrong crowd, usually those who either

don’t know God or are ignoring Him. Jonah knew what was right. God had spoken to him, detailing out his job description. Sometimes, when the going gets tough, they say that the tough go fishing; well, that is exactly what Jonah did. Instead of catching a fish; this time, the fish caught Jonah. Like Jonah did, we wait until we are deep in trouble before crying out to the Lord to be rescued from the situation. The great fish that had swallowed Jonah, swam to the shore and spit him out, a very sorry servant of the Most High God. We learn from this passage that God truly does speak to people. He spoke four times to Jonah

Pastor’s Cornerin this book. This time, he obeyed; but according to chapter 4, he did so under pressure and with a rebellious spirit. He even got angry at God because through God’s loving kindness and mercy, Nineveh was spared certain destruction. If God spoke to Jonah, He can also speak to you and I. When He tells us what He desires from us, we should answer in the positive: ‘yes, Lord!’ Running away from God only brings us to a place of asking the wrong people for help. As

a result, we stress out over life’s storms, suffering through situations we could have avoided; until we agree with Him that He knew what was best for us all along. God is a God of second chances. When we say no, He works with us through our stubbornness until we can again hear Him call us. Why? Because He loves us so very much. Do you love Him? He not only wants your love, but you need His love! It will make your life a whole lot better. God Bless You!

By Betsy Quinn The efforts of many dedi-cated volunteers and part-ners were celebrated in the Town of Superior on Sat-urday, Feb. 18, during The Legends of Superior Lost Trails Eco-Tourism Festi-val. Following a pancake breakfast at The Magma Club Opening Ceremonies began with comments from LOST Project Manager Mila Lira, Superior Mayor Jayme Valenzulea, and Bruce Rich-ardson of Resolution Cop-per. Morning and afternoon guided hikes on five dif-ferent trails made learning about the history, geology and local lore of each Trail an added bonus. Dozens of tourists and outdoor enthu-siasts enjoyed walking the Trails. Attendees at the History luncheon at The Magma Club heard presentations on the history of Pinal City, Superior and Queen Creek from Tonto Forest Historian Scott Wood, Tonto Forest Archeologist Steve Gemick and author Carol Schum-acher. Schumaker’s book, Su-perior and Queen Valley, published by Arcadia Books, covers local history begin-ning with Generals Stone-man and Crook’s establish-ment in the 1870s of a mili-tary installation to ward off Apache raids, followed by a soldier named Sullivan dis-covering Arizona’s richest

silver deposit known as The Silver King Mine. That lead to Cololnel Boyce Thomp-son’s development of the Magma Copper Company. The book has details on Queen Valley’s 1915 first official homesteader, stage-coach hand Hart Mullins. It is an excellent guide to the rich history and close-knit community culture of the Old West still alive and well today. At Besich Park, Cobre Val-ley Regional Medical Center sponsored a pre-hike well-ness session offering hiking tips, free bottled water and snack bars. Eco-Tourism booths offered information and handouts on eco-friend-ly use of Arizona outdoors with a wealth of handouts, information maps. Booths offered free coloring books for kids, pencils, Chapstick, frisbees, wildflower seeds and bookmarks. Information available included maps, fire safety, birdwatching, botany, responsible hiking, bik-ing, motorized travel, four wheeling, motorcycle riding, camping and conservancy of natural resources. Represen-tatives from Tonto National Forest, the Bureau of Land Management, The Nature Conservancy, the Mobile Visitor Center and Superior Chamber of Commerce, Arizona Game and Fish, and Arizona Audubon Society manned booths. Tourists and locals alike

enjoyed morning and after-noon guided hikes including the History of Pinal City Hike, The Pinal Cemetery Hike, The Geology Hike, Arizona Trail Hike and Legends and Lore Hike. The events and hikes were well attended. Hiking on the trails alone is very en-joyable but the presence of guides was a real bonus and made each hike even more interesting and educational. The Festival marked the first guided hike along the ‘Canyon Trail,’(Geology Hike) which was fascinating and rewarding for anyone who has ever driven east of Superior on Highway 60 and noticed the old road bed below and bridge beneath the highway. The guided hike was a pleasant journey into local history and a geol-ogy lesson all in one! This hike follows the old Magma Mine road, which yielded to the present day Highway 60 east of Superior. Legends of Superior Lost Trail project has been made possible through a joint partnership with the Town of Superior, Tonto National Forest, The Arizona Trail Association, Superior His-torical Society and Chamber of Commerce, Arizona Game & Fish, Pinal County, Pinal Partnerships, Arizona State University, and Reso-lution Copper Company and many individual volunteer contributors.

Compiled by Mila Lira At press time Copper was being sold at $3.80 a pound. Copper has recently reached a five month high. BHP – Pinto Valley BHP Billiton announced that it will restart mining at its Pinto Val-ley operation. The mine, which will produce copper and molybdenum concentrate, will have annual pro-duction capacity of approximately 60,000 tons of copper in concentrate. The project will create approxi-mately 650 new jobs with mining expected to resume at the end of the 2012 calendar year. BHP Billiton Base Metals North America Asset President, Wayne Isaacs, said: “We are pleased to be resuming mining operations at Pinto Valley given the robust investment case and the potential for an exten-sion to current reserves. We will be hiring more than six hundred new team members and look forward to working with local communities to safely restart the mine.” Peter Beaven, President BHP Billi-ton Base Metals, said: “The US$195 million investment at Pinto Valley will add valuable copper produc-tion to our Base Metals portfolio. As we look forward, our business is particularly well placed given strong growth anticipated at both Escondida and Antamina in the short to medium term.”Tombstone Mining Tombstone Exploration Corporation announced today that it has applied for new State Exploration Permits for minerals, including Gold, Silver and Copper in the eastern edge of the Tombstone Mining District. These applications should be executed and finalized by the Arizona State Land Department within the next sixty days. The Additional Permits, once ap-proved, will encompass 2,157 acres in Cochise County, Tombstone, Arizona, adjacent to the 100% Company-owned Zebra property of 2,000 acres. The property is almost adjacent to the northern boundary of the Hay Mountain property of Lib-erty Star Uranium and Metals Corp. that has recently had its own 43-101 report completed on the Tombstone Mining District and is currently conducting an active exploration program that they claim has great potential for the discovery of copper, moly, gold and other metals. The Zebra Prospect is a disseminat-ed gold property located in Cochise County, Arizona, approximately three miles southeast of the town of Tombstone, in T20S, R23E, Sec-

tions 20, 21, 27, 28, 29, 32, 33 and 34. The property totals 4,157 acres and consists entirely of State land for which Arizona State Prospecting Permits have been secured or applied for. It is believed that the prospect lies within the metallogenic zonation halo of the Tombstone District. The shallow ores of the central district were known to be high in silver and lower in gold. Conversely, and in accordance with zonational patterns, the Zebra Property has high gold, and relatively moderate silver values. During a detailed mapping pro-gram during the 1980s, thirty-three samples were collected of jasperoid, jasperoid breccia, silica vein mate-rial, hematitically altered silty lime-stone, dolomite and silicified rhyolite porphyry. Seven of these samples assayed >.20 ounces per ton gold and another three assayed >.10 ounces per ton gold. The highest assay was 1.0268 ounces per ton gold collected from an outcrop of black to red jas-peroid breccia. These historical as-says strongly support previous assay data from the property and suggest the occurrence of a large bulk ton-nage disseminated gold deposit on the property. Geophysical surveys conducted on the property in the 1980s also suggest the possibility of a gold skarn deposit at depth. Alan Brown, President of Tomb-stone, stated, “With prices for metals at historic high levels, the time to move aggressively forward is now. We are currently planning an active exploration and near term drill pro-gram for the Zebra property based on recommendations in our new 43-101 and a report prepared for Asarco in the 1980s.” The Tombstone Exploration Project is an exploration and development project within the historic Tombstone Mining District, Cochise County, southeastern Arizona. Detailed stud-ies of the minerals of the Tombstone Mining District have shown a large number and wide assortment of mineralization including silver, gold, copper, lead, and zinc minerals, which have been described along with manganese, tellurium, molyb-denum, and vanadium. Although Tombstone is famous for bonanza silver deposits and is essentially a precious-metal district, the porphyry copper model of Lowell and Guilbert (1970) suggests the presence of a buried porphyry copper deposit at depth. Tombstone has the minerals rights to 9,700 acres of historical mining land and is the largest land holder in the Tombstone Mining District.
