She was a member of First Baptist Church of Superior. She enjoyed square dancing, bowling, traveling, painting and many arts and crafts, but

most of all her family. Services will be held Friday, March 22, 2013 at 3 pm at the First Baptist Church of Superior, AZ with interment following at the Fairview Superior Cemetery. He was transported and booked into the Pinal County Jail in Florence.

Superior Police Report Possible criminal damage was reported in the 300 block of Main St. An accident was reported in the 500 block of Highway 60. A drug offense was reported in the 300 block of Gibbs.March 12 Child abuse was reported in the area of Highlands. Calls not listed include 17 traffi c stops, nine disturbances, fi ve information reports, six civil matters, two agency assists, fi ve animal complaints, three suspicious activity reports, four found property reports, fi ve alarm drops, two attempts to locate, one utility problem, two traffi c hazards, two citizen assists, two juvenile problems, one victim notifi cation and one welfare check. Dear Ms. Peralta, In the years I have been in Superior, other than showing support for a few council candidates, I have stayed away from Town politics and negativity. Instead, I have focused on Town clean-up efforts, recycling and promoting the Town and businesses through my work with the Chamber of Com-

merce. I have watched you berate and belittle people at many Council meetings. Your behavior at the special Town Council meeting on Wednesday, Mar. 13 related to the land exchange that will allow Resolution Copper to pro-ceed with mining in this area, has pushed me past my tolerance level. When the meeting was

turned over to you to chair, because of three members that had conflicts of interest with the issue, you must have taken that as an O.K. to be rude, pushy and basically ob-noxious. You slammed that gavel down as hard as you could and threatened people with removal by the police if they tried to say anything. You acted

like someone who was just throned queen of a dictato-rial nation. You made it very clear that you had no interest in hearing what anyone had to say and went so far as to say, “If you wanted to speak you should have been here last week.” How could they? The agenda item to oppose the Land Exchange did not exist last

week! There were approximate-ly 120 people who came to the meeting that night. Regardless of their stand on the land exchange, they were there because they are passionate and emo-tional about their cause. Each person in that room had a right to be treated with dignity and respect. Instead, they were treated

like dirt! No public official should ever treat people like that, regardless of their opinion. Ms. Peralta, you shamed the Town of Superior and should make a public apology to the community for your totally inappropri-ate behavior. At 4 am on Feb. 23, 2013, our beautiful mother and friend, Bonnie Jean Herring Pitner caught her train into heaven. Born Oct. 2, 1945 in Hill, New Mexico to Fines Garret Herring Sr. and Willie Alyene Hart Herring, she grew up in New Mexico with her brother, Gary Herring. The family moved throughout southern New Mexico, until settling in the town of Anthony. Bonnie would also grow up with the love of her life, Bryant lee Pitner Sr. She knew, even at the age of three that she would someday become Mrs. Bryant Lee Pitner. That day would happen, twice, in April of 1960. They eloped into Mexico, the fi rst time and then nearly had a shotgun wedding two weeks later. Soon after, they would move to Arizona, where they would raise their family of two boys, Bryant Lee Pitner Jr. (Suzanne) and Dave Garrett Pitner

FLORENCE – The Pinal County Board of Supervisors voted 5-0 to support a resolution to urge the United States House and Senate to recognize the Resolution Copper Company for its efforts to build a copper mine near Superior. Next week, the House Energy and Minerals Subcommittee will hold a legislative hearing on seven mining bills. One of the seven bills includes H.R. 687 entitled “Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act of 2013” sponsored by Representatives Paul Gosar and Ann Kirkpatrick. H.R. 687 would exchange land owned by Resolution Copper with federal land near Superior. The swap would allow Resolution to begin the process of obtaining permits to open an underground mine. During public comment for the resolution, twelve speakers addressed the Supervisors – ten spoke in favor, two opposed. In offering a motion for a favorable vote, District 1 Supervisor Pete Rios (whose district includes the land in question), said that he has supported this project since the beginning. “These people (residents of Superior) know mining, they have never feared

By Mila Besich-Lira The Superior High School Family Consumer Community Leaders of America held their annual Cancer Fight by Candle Light walk on Saturday. Each year the high school club hosts this event to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. As the sun began to set behind Picket Post, hundreds of walkers started their trek down Sunset Drive to the Superior Memorial Football Field. The street was lined with luminaries honoring those who are fighting cancer, conquered the disease and have passed away from it. This year, the club asked Angie Gomez to be the guest speaker for the event. Gomez is a native of Superior and

graduate of Ray High School who recently conquered her battle with lymphoma. During her speech, Gomez explained that she was going to keep her speech “real.” She explained how she was diagnosed and how her friends and family were supportive during her illness. She shared how she felt scared and how she felt about losing her hair and the other side effects of chemo therapy. The event this year was held on the one year anniversary of the death of her mother, Wanda. Gomez shared with the crowd how her mother was always so comforting and encouraging during her diagnosis. Following her speech Gomez sang with another Superior native, J-Ryda

Silvas. The two have recently created a song called

“Wishes and Dreams.” Gomez is a local celebrity

not only for conquering cancer but for also being a lead singer with The Powerdrive Band and is a radio personality for MEGA 104.3 radio station. The FCCLA organization raises money for the American Cancer Society by selling t-shirts and luminaries. The Red Bear organization also helps with the event by preparing hamburgers for the group to sell to raise additional funds for the American Cancer Society.

Flagstaff – On Feb. 23, thirty students from Student Support Services (SSS) participated in National TRIO Day (TRIO) by volunteering with the Special Olympics Arizona 2013 Winter Games. Monica Ochoa, a resident of Superior resident, was there, participating and showing her true blue Northern Arizona University (NAU) pride. TRIO Day is a way to show appreciation toward the community for its support, through community service. NAU has been home to TRIO since 1977 and currently hosts fi ve programs; Educational Talent Search, Educational Opportunity Centers, Upward Bound Math Science, and SSS. These programs are federally funded college opportunity programs that motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in their pursuit of a college degree, and into a better career path. They also provide valuable supportive services to students, veterans and adult learners. The university has demonstrated a strong commitment to fi rst-generation college students and those from poor, or working class, backgrounds by expanding the Student Support Services program in 2008. By Mila Besich-LiraSuperior Sun The Superior Town Council conducted a special meeting Wednesday, March 13, to pass a resolution expressing opposition to the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange Act. H.R. 687. The motion was passed unanimously. The agenda included an executive session to discuss the response from Resolution Copper Mining to Terminate the agreement and discuss the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act of 2013. The council did not vote to go into the executive (secret) session and instead handled the business on the agenda in open meeting. Councilmember Soyla “Kiki” Peralta conducted the four-minute meeting.

In her opening statements, she explained to the packed room that there would be no discussion from the public and anyone making outbursts would be asked to be quiet and if they continued they would be removed by a police officer. The other business item on the agenda would be a discussion of possible delegation traveling to Washington, D.C. to testify regarding H.R. 687. “After the way Pinal County voted we have no choice but to send a delegation to Washington D.C.,” explained Councilmember Peralta and she made a motion to send a delegation to Washington D.C. The motion passed unanimously. Peralta’s discussion was in regards to the

Pinal County Board of Supervisors unanimous vote to approve a resolution of support for Resolution Copper. Resolution Copper Communications Manager, Bruce Richardson issued the following statement regarding the Town’s decision: “We are deeply disappointed in the Town’s

actions. It represents a major setback to the progress we have made with the bill and the bi-partisan efforts of our Arizona delegation to move this land exchange forward. It also represents a setback to the good partnership and working relationship we have had with the town. We do not believe the Council’s

decision reflects the voice of the majority of residents in the Town of Superior, whose livelihoods have depended on mining in the area for generations. “We remain perplexed by the Town’s recent actions since the issues it raised concerning the language of the land exchange bill and the Mutual Benefits Agreement could easily have been addressed without terminating the agreement with us last month or by taking this even more divisive and destructive action. The Council’s decision is not constructive at a time when what is needed most is meaningful dialogue and helpful solutions.” The Council did not disclose who they will be sending to Washington D.C. to testify on behalf of the Town.

month to dismiss its agreement with the local copper company, citing what many on the council said were unfair clauses and requirements. The Town also revoked its support for the federal Southeast Arizona Land Exchange bill that would facilitate the copper project.Mario Sanchez works for

Superior Environmental Solution, which is contracted by Resolution Copper among other mining companies. “Obviously that would affect us, if one of our clients had a reduced

scope” if the Resolution project were to depart, he said. “They’ve been a great business partner for us.”Former mayor Michael

Hing, co-owner of Save Money Mart, said he was not happy with how the council handled the situation. “If the Town was seeking a better deal, if there were problems with the agreement, that’s fi ne,” he said. “But don’t vote it out.”He said he fears for the

future of Superior. “I might have to tell my kids there isn’t a future in this business,” he said.More recently, the

Superior – The bite of winter is giving way to the warmer days of spring, and the students of Superior Head Start are working on a theme to celebrate the change of seasons. The classroom is beginning to look as much like spring as the outdoors, with the projects being made by the children decorating the room. Having planted vegetable seeds, they are giving them the things they need to make them grow, while discovering very interesting things about how plants grow and what they are used for. As part of the spring theme there was a visit on Wed, Mar. 6 from the Superior High School “Panthers” FCCLA group sponsored

by Mrs. Villarverde. The FCCLA students provided a Literacy, Eating and Nutrition activity presentation by introducing each activity and providing paper plates, food group cutouts, and glue sticks to create a place setting of color coded food groups to emphasize the importance of eating healthy foods. Assisted by the Superior students, the Head Start children matched the food groups to the corresponding food group color. The FCCLA students also provided a food tasting activity, titled “Ants on a Log” which is one of the many favorite Head Start Chef Combo food tasting activities. The children

served themselves family style and commented on the taste, texture, color, and size of snack. At the end of each activity, they reviewed what they learned about “Food groups”. The FCCLA students used developmentally appropriate poster board replicas of the various food groups (apple, carrot, lollipop, milk, bread) to introduce each food group.

Each student spoke briefly about each food group and asked the children open ended questions. One Head Start student commented on distinguishing between the poster board cut outs of each of the food groups: “I don’t like the apple ‘cause it doesn’t have arms!” The children were presented with color coded food group wrist bands upon completion of an activity. The Head Start children enjoyed

preparing and tasting the snack and fruit juice and, especially, interacting with the FCCLA students, Mrs. Villarverde and Ms. Josie. The children expressed their thanks and concluded the morning activity by singing an “I Love You Ritual” and singing “Where is Thumbkin?”. The Head Start Program is family orientated and community based working passionately to elevate the quality of life for children and families.

We read about them in 2 Kings 17:9, where it says – “the Israelites secretly did things against the Lord their God that were not right.” They tried to live in obedience to God, but when they thought He wasn’t looking, they did their own thing, following their own desires. We are no different from them. We go to church and act religious around our friends. Away from that environment, we slip into a different lifestyle. Do we really think that we will get away with it? In 1 Corinthians 4:5 we are told, “the Lord will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts.” There will come a time when everything that has been hidden, whether good or bad, will be exposed and revealed. No one has to live that way. Simply choose to do what is right in God’s eyes. Why is it that we tend toward doing wrong so often? It is because temptation and sin are fun. God acknowledges that in Hebrews 11:25. The Apostle Paul tells us in Titus 2:12 to just say no to sin. Choose the life that God gives. Learn to walk in obedience to God’s Holy Word, the Bible. Trust in the Lord, He loves you and wants what is best for you!

mining, it is ingrained in them,” Rios said. “The big question before everyone is: do we do the land swap and then begin the environmental studies, or vice versa.” District 2 Supervisor Cheryl Chase, who was a nurse for ASARCO, said that Resolution Copper has kept local elected leaders apprised of their operations. “I’ve known about this project since I was in the legislature,” Chase said. “They have kept us and the people in the loop. What this really boils down to is local control for the residents in the area.” Chairman Steve Miller said there is a need to get the land exchange passed through Congress. “I have supported this project for years,” Miller stated. “It was sad to see the land exchange resolution die in the Senate

last year. Now we have to bring it up again in the House. We really need this project.” District 4 Supervisor and Vice-Chairman Anthony Smith said that the proposed land exchange has grass roots support and the need to pass it is important for the county. “This project is of vital importance to the county, the state and the nation,” Smith said. “We need to embrace this project-52 percent of Pinal County people leave this county to go to work, we need to stop that.” District 5 Supervisor Todd House said that support for the project is growing in his district. “I recently attended a meeting in Queen Valley,” House said. “Many of those people were initially not in support of the land exchange. But once the issues were brought up, they seem to be changing their minds and supporting this project.”

FLORENCE – Pinal County Board of Supervisors Chairman Steve Miller has been invited to the United States House of Representatives to testify in support of a land exchange bill being debated in Congress. The House Energy and Minerals Subcommittee will hold an oversight hearing on “America’s Mineral Resources: Creating Mining and Manufacturing Jobs and Securing America” on Thursday, March 21 in Washington, D.C. The bill Chairman Miller will be testifying on is H. R. 697, named “Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act of 2013.” This bill would

allow the government to exchange federal land with private land to allow Resolution Copper to begin the process of opening a mine near Superior. “I am deeply honored to be asked to testify,” Chairman Miller said. “This issue of the land exchange is far too important for this county and its residents. I intend to tell the subcommittee the benefits of the Resolution Copper Project and explain the dire need for jobs in this area.” On Wednesday last week, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved of a resolution urging Congress to recognize the efforts of Resolution Copper to spur economic growth in Pinal
