By Mila Besich-Lira Last week Resolution Copper hosted a community wide open house to update the public on the project. This event was much more like a science fair than just an informational open house. Various stations throughout the event gave event goers the opportunity to learn more about each department at Resolution and the stations highlighted specific issues such as water usage, subsidence, safety and geology. Picture boards and videos were available to bring the views from underground to and throughout the mine property to the public. At the safety booth various safety equipment was on hand for people to try on.

The core sampling booth representative explained the age of the Apache Leap and how copper was formed in the area millions of years ago. Other departments such as human resources were also on hand to explain the hiring process at Resolution or how to apply with other contractors. The event did not have any official speeches or comments from company officials. The open house hosted was rescheduled from the earlier this summer when the event was postponed due to the 257 fires near Superior. There has been no significant progress in Congress on the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act.

By Mila Besich-Lira The Superior Chamber of Commerce held a meet and greet for all of the candi-dates running for office in the upcoming general elec-tion. The event was well attended by local voters, candidates and campaign staff. The event was held with the support of Los Her-manos Restaurant who donated the use of the ballroom. Sheriff Paul Babeu and Lando Voyles a candidate for County Attorney sponsored the food for the event. County Treasurer Dodie Doolittle who is seeking reelection sponsored the drinks for the event. The event was not a traditional forum where candidates were asked questions from a modera-tor. This candidate event format allowed voters to mingle with candidates and their staff members at des-ignated booths and have individual conversations. Following the meet and greet time, each candidate was given three minutes to introduce themselves and talk about their positions. Rather than the can-

didates being grouped according to office, the candidates each spoke based on alphabetical or-der of their names. Food and drink sponsors were allowed five minutes to speak. The event program originally listed Babeu and Voyles as speaking at the beginning of the program after Doolittle; however, an agenda modification was made and the two spoke at the end of the forum. All of the candidate at-tending each took their allotted three minutes to introduce themselves, talk about current issues and concerns for the area. Doolittle explained that she is running for a second term as Pinal County Trea-surer. She explained that her office is responsible for managing and investing the funds that the county re-ceives. She highlighted her many years of experience working at the County in the Treasurer’s Office. A common theme amongst the candidates for the Legislative District 8 was the need for education funding and their ideas on building a stronger econo-my for the area. Those run-

ning for the county offices such as school superinten-dent, and recorder, focused on their abilities to get the job done and their work related experience versus talking party politics. Marcia Busching who was the sole Corporation Commission candidate in attendance explained that she and her team of can-didates were focusing on making a brighter future for Arizona with further advancement of solar en-ergy. Staff representatives from the Arizona Senate cam-paigns attended the forum and spoke on behalf of Dr. Richard Carmona (D) and Rep. Jeff Flake (R). The Arizona Senate race is cur-rently neck and neck with Carmona currently leading in the polls. Congressional District 1 candidates Ann Kirkpatrick and Jonathan Paton were not in atten-dance at the event. The evening ended with current County Attorney Jim Walsh providing his three-minute presenta-tion about the success his department has had with child support collections. He talked about the im-

portance of the County At-torney being independent from the County Sheriff. Walsh explained that seven out of 10 cases in his office end up with the defendant going to prison or being sentenced to probation. Both Voyles and Babeu used their time to explain how if they were elected the two would make a good team because they would be much harder on criminals than Walsh would. Voyles specifically referenced the Brian Shaw case, which has become an ongoing source of attack on Walsh during the cam-paign season. Walsh was not given an opportunity to rebut the claims made by both Voyles and Babeu during the forum. Walsh issued a written statement to the Copper Area News (See related editorial). Babeu explained that his office has released RICO funds to the Town of Su-perior to help with a sum-mer recreation programs and his office provides interagency assistance to the Superior Police De-partment and all police departments throughout the

Candidates mix and mingle in Superior

County. Babeu was the only can-didate for the office of sheriff to attend the forum. Independent sheriff candi-date Ty Morgan contacted the Copper Area News and said he would have attend-ed if he had been invited or notified of the event. Comments from candi-dates and those in atten-dance were very positive. Voters attending seemed to enjoy meeting the can-didates in a relaxed atmo-

sphere. The following candidates attended the event: Paul Babeu, Lando Voyles, Dodie Doolittle, Marcia Busching, Ernest Busta-mante, Gem Cox, Frank Pratt, Barbara Kelly, Bar-bara McGuire, Joe Ortiz, Pete Rios, Randy Robbins, Orlenda Roberts, Virginia Ross and Jim Walsh. Rich-ard Carmona, Jeff Flake and Emily Verdugo each sent campaign representa-tives to the event.

My opponent continues to spread lies and falsehoods regarding the Bryan Shaw case. Counting on the fact that I cannot, as the Pinal County Attorney, ethically comment on a pending investigation, my opponent continues to exploit this horrible tragedy to aid him in his political ambitions. Nonetheless, I can comment regarding the lies that

deal with defendant Bryan Shaw’s previous criminal history in Pinal County. Sadly, politicians like Mr. Voyles distort the facts, exploit tragedy, and attempt to exploit victims for political gain. Mr. Voyles even went as far as to approach grieving victims in the courthouse and ask them to join him in a press conference; however, when

they refused his proposition, Mr. Voyles decided that the facts of the case were not sufficient for his political ambitions and simply created a new set of facts to aid his political assault. Here are just a few of the lies Mr Voyles has been spreading about his prior in Pinal County:· That Brian Shaw pulled a gun on his Uncle… (Mr.

Shaw never pulled a gun on his uncle.)· That my office charged Brian Shaw with a less serious crime than recommended by police… (My office charged Mr. Shaw with the EXACT crime recommended by the police agency.)· That my office offered Brian Shaw probation as a plea. (Mr. Shaw was never

offered probation as part of the plea agreement. My office refused to agree to probation and made Bryan Shaw plea to the charge while leaving the decision whether to send Mr. Shaw to prison up to the judge.) The real message that should be taken from this horrible tragedy is that more needs to be done to protect victims. This is why my

office has focused so much attention on victim outreach. Some of the hardest cases for any prosecutor are when the victims of Domestic Violence cannot escape their abusers, and the most heartbreaking is when those same victims end up in the hospital days, weeks, or years later—or worse, dead. Sincerely,/s/ James Walsh

By Mila Besich-Lira Last week the Superior Panthers played the Pima Roughriders in a conference game. The Panthers used their defense to keep the score manageable in the first half of the game but they were

unable to gain a lead in the second half. Pima’s tough defensive and quick-footed offense kept the Panthers from raising the score leaving the Panthers with a conference loss to the Pima Roughriders 60-18.

run roughshod over Panthers In the second half there was one play where the Panthers stopped play at the sound of the whistle by one of the referees on the fi eld all while Pima continued play and ran in for another touchdown. After a long discussion,

the points were allowed and the referee announced that it was an inadvertent whistle. Coach Ryan Palmer protested the call but that protest was met with deaf ears. Overall, the team had some critical interceptions

and recovered some fumbles but they were unable to stop the Roughriders from scoring. Stats of the game were not available at press time. The Panthers will play Cibecue Wildcats for their last home game of the

season this Friday at 7:00 p.m. Cibecue is 0-6 for the season the Panthers are favored in this match up. The Panthers also celebrated Senior Night by recognizing the parents of the senior football players and cheerleaders.

The following students were recognized along with their parents during the ceremony: Alyssa Barragan daughter of Mike and Sandra Barragan, Nicole Godinez daughter of Arlynn and Ignacio Godinez, Richard Bueno son of Rick Bueno and grandson of Diane, Angel Cardenas, nephew of Joey and Hilda Cardenas, Louie Fuentes son of Louie and

Superior Clinic Open

R.C. and Kathryn Arnold

The CV Superior Clinic, located at the former “Arnold Motors” location on Highway 60, has opened its doors to provide health services to the people of Superior and surrounding communities. The clinic, owned and operated by Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center (CVRMC), has been in operation more than 11

years at the location of Main Street and Magma. The foresight and concern that Kathryn and R.C. Arnold had for their community and the desire CVRMC had to build a new clinic brought about a partnership beyond land and building. It became a companionship of providing modern amenities and future expansion of healthcare

TUCSON, Ariz - The Ari-zona Game and Fish Depart-ment (AGFD) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, with cooperation from the Town of Marana, are again seeking help from the public as the Nighttime Humming-bird Feeder Bat Monitoring Project resumes for 2012. Most of Arizona’s 28 bat species eat insects, but the federally endangered Lesser long-nosed bats (Leptonyc-teris yerbabuenae), and the Arizona species of concern Mexican long-tongued bats (Choeronycteris mexicana), drink nectar and from hum-mingbird feeders, and also eat pollen and fruits from plants such as the saguaro and agave. “If your hummingbird feeders mysteriously drained during the night last sum-mer, the midnight raiders may have been bats,” said AGFD Regional Supervi-sor Raul Vega. “Most of Arizona’s 28 bat species eat insects, but two species drink nectar and eat pol-len from plants such as the saguaro and agave. These bats are becoming common visitors to southern Arizona hummingbird feeders in late summer and early fall.” In years past, citizen sci-entists have volunteered numerous hours each sum-mer to monitor their hum-mingbird feeders for those two bats. Such observations, including photos, provide valuable information that allows for better understand-ing the of bats behaviors. The bats migrate north from Mexico and arrive

in southern Arizona as the Saguaro cactus and agave begin to bloom, traveling throughout southern Ari-zona. “If you enjoy watchable wildlife and sitting on your porch during summer eve-nings, please consider vol-unteering your time for this worthy cause,” said AGFD Wildlife Specialist Shawn Lowery. “Your efforts will

allow wildlife and resource managers in Arizona to bet-ter understand the ecology of these species.” The goals of the project are to understand when these species arrive in southern Arizona, determine foraging habits and movement pat-terns and document when the migratory species depart Arizona.
