Superior Police Report

By Rev. Dennis Van GorpFamily Life Christian Center In Psalm 109:4 we read, “But I am a man of prayer.” David had been rejected, lied about and hated by those he called his friends. He is not alone in his problems. In Daniel 6:5,10,11 we find another man of prayer. It was exactly that which got him in trouble and thrown into the den of hungry lions. Several of the Old Testament patriarchs were known as a friend of God. Second to this is the wonderful title we are considering here: to be known as a man of prayer. Obviously this does not

apply to men only, but to each one of us. A person of prayer not only has regular times that they spend alone with the Lord each day; it means that during the rest of the time, they are in an attitude of prayer. Yet, they are fully capable of functioning in an appropriate manner during work and other activities. Quite simply, God is first in their life. Each day is begun and ended by a conversation with the Lord. The primary reason is not to bring their “I want” list to God. It is about talking and discussing the day’s planned events and the issues which will arise. It

Pastor’s Cornerconcerns organizing your schedule with God’s will and plans for your day. It means getting God’s view point on what the issues really are; and at the end of the day, how you dealt with them and

if there was a better way in which they could have been handled. As a person of prayer, each situation must be approached through prayer. It is important to get an understanding of what God

sees happening. That way, our actions or re-actions will not mess things up, but allow everything to work out for the best. Other people will take notice that even in a crisis; we are calm because, even

though we don’t have all the answers, we know Who does and how to talk to Him. Our lives will be seen as successful. We will become known as men and women of prayer. Awesome!

Have you wanted to take a guided tour of a real Arizona ghost town, or learn more about the mountains surrounding Superior? Join us Saturday, Feb. 18, in Superior, Arizona for the Legends of Superior Trails (LOST) Eco Tourism Fest. During this event we will have guided hikes and

eggs, juice and coffee. Proceeds help to support both local organizations. After your morning hikes settle in for a delicious barbecue lunch where you will also be treated to live music and a presentation on the history of Pinal City by the Tonto National Forest Archeologist Scott Wood and Historian Steve Germick. Lunch tickets are $10 in advance; at the

door prices may be slightly higher. Proceeds from the luncheon will benefit ongoing development of the LOST trails. The guided hikes will start at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. There will be guided hikes though Pinal City with a visit to the wagon tracks, a Geology Hike through the canyon segment of the trail,

Superior Head Start Preschool last week celebrated United Way of Pinal County’s 12th Annual Read to Kids Day. On Jan. 26, several offi cers from the Pinal County Sheriff’s Offi ce, students’ moms and Mayor Jayme Valenzuela were on hand at Head Start Preschool to read to the students. Eddie the Eagle also visited. Sgt. Fendley and Eddie Eagle talked with the students about keeping themselves safe, not picking up guns or matches, anti-bullying and not walking off with persons they don’t know, ending with presenting all students with a Pinal County Sheriff’s Offi ce T-shirt. All the visitors spent time talking with the children and reading books aloud to the students, who proudly showed off several of their favorite storybooks. This event promotes community volunteerism and raises literacy awareness, which was in evidence when a few of the preschool students “read” their books to the visitors. (Submitted photos)

Are you ready for a healthier life? Weight loss not only improves your quality of life, but also prevents or lowers your risk of developing diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, back and joint pain. You’ve probably tried to lose weight before, but gained it back. Studies have shown that patients on traditional weight loss programs lose weight, but often regain two-thirds of it within one year and almost all of it within ve years. e LAP-BAND® System is an adjustable band that is placed around the top of your stomach laparoscopically (using a video

camera and small incisions), reducing the stomach capacity and creating an earlier feeling of fullness. It is an e ective and reversible surgical method for weight loss. It’s safer and less invasive than gastric bypass, as there is no stomach cutting or stapling.

Dr. Werner Andrade is now o ering this procedure at Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center. For more information, please contact our bariatric coordinator, Jessica Rader, at 928-425-3246.

Solutions to last week’s puzzles

By Betsy Quinn The Superior Chamber of Commerce-sponsored Fourth Annual Home and Building Tour on January 27 and 28 made The Town of Superior the best place to spend a weekend day. Six local homeowners opened their homes to public tours. Resolution Copper hosted visitors as well. Resident and visitor alike had a wealth of events and

entertainment to choose from. Artists, vendors, and merchants provided a treasure trove of wares. Local eateries and vendors offered pleasant respites with delicious local fare to please every taste. Tour goers picked up their tickets at the Chamber of Commerce table in front of the Copper Gecko. The dedication of The Superior Chamber of Commerce and volunteers from the

Volunteers, residents and visitors make Superior Fourth Community made the two day event a huge success. It was just another beautiful southwestern weekend under blue skies in an historic mining town. Tourists and townspeople were treated to all the best Superior has to offer. Besich Park was the scene of the ‘Art in the Park Show’ with booths and displays. Live music made one linger while listening to acoustic guitarist Jim Pipkin singing ‘Americana- Sourmash for the Soul.’ A pottery making demonstration by Mata Ortiz potters from Mexico was fun for all. . An impressive Tae Kwon Do demonstration by local students ages 6 to 22 at Besich Park brought to mind the song ‘Saturday in the

Park’ by Chicago. The Tae Kwon Do classes offer a kids and adults a great way to be active. Cheryl Lundgren teaches the class on Saturday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Superior Parks and Recreation game room at the old Roosevelt School. Lundgren says all students age three to adult are welcome to enroll; $40 covers the eight-week course. Participating in the Tae Kwon Do demonstration were Ike Lopez, 22, Daniel Molina, 6, and brothers Carlos Soto, 8, and Gael Sotos, 7. Doc Darr was on hand demonstrating how to make and play didgeridoos, with his spectacular collection of handmade didgeridoos. Local resident, John Moreno, displayed a hand carved

wooden horse any child would love to ride and demonstrated carving a wooden horse from a large block of wood. Sculptor Sam Lowe offered very unique wood sculptors. Paintings and artwork by Autumn Springham and daughters Aspen and Emily of Autumn Earthtones attracted a crowd. No one could pass by the unusual glass sculptors and works of art by Scott Thompson of Strato Glass. The Senior Center had on hand historian and author Jack San Felice giving an excellent presentation on ‘Silver Mining in the Old West’ including displays and photos. Fascinating listening. San Felice is truly an authority on area mining history. Next door an Art Sale offering Mata Ortiz pottery, paintings, photographs, prints and hand crafted jewelry had a constant crowd. The Bob Jones Museum saw lots of visitors. The Copper Corridor Mobile Museum was on hand, staffed with volunteers including Mila Lira. The museum offered videos and information on ‘The Copper

Corridor,’ from Superior to Oracle to Globe/Miami and all the communities in between. Not to be overlooked, Anna Jeffery, Sylvia Delgado Barrett and a woman who identified herself only as a local rock climber set up camp across from Besich Park with signs protesting the Resolution Copper Land Swap and the impending loss of Oak Flats recreation area. The ladies chatted with locals and folks strolling by in an effort to gain support and educate people about their cause. Democratic candidate for Pinal County Recorder Barbara Kelly was on the scene. Kelly has her sights set on the being elected to the top job in the Recorders’ office. Kelly boasts 34 years of extensive experience in the Pinal County Recorder’s office. At the Magma Club crowd pleasing was the theme of the weekend. Antique buffs delighted in an incredible selection of curios. Cathy Sims-Gunderson of CG treasures always looks

Annual Home Tour success!forward to having their Antique booth during the home tour, crediting Sue

Anderson of the Chamber of Commerce for making the event such a pleasure. On the

front deck of the Magma Club volunteers Deb Townsend, Delia Guzman, Mary Macias and Tina Gutierrez handed out cheese and crackers to the crowd. Meanwhile, award winning didgeridoo player Scott Schafer mesmerized listeners during his concert with instrumental new age jazz music. Hospitality was the name of the game at local restaurants and merchants. The Rolling Rock Gallery, Copper Gecko, Felicia’s Ice Cream Parlor, Café Piedra de Roja, Steven McNeely’s Diner, Porter’s Café, Rose’s Roses, Copper Triangle, La Serna General Store, Jade Grill, Los Hermanos, Edwardo’s Pizzeria, Buckboard Café and Casa Denogean all offered popular destinations with a steady stream of patrons. Mary Josephs of Chocolates by M. Josephs was all smiles while offering samples of custom made elegant truffles and bonbons at Porters Café. Resistance was futile, and the chocolates were superb. Josephs is on the web at chocolatesbymj.com, or call (480) 988-9150. A great choice for a sweet Valentines treat! Located near the Magma Club on Main Street, the gallery of Tom Macias was well worth stopping by. Tom’s art work on display includes a ‘bottle series’ of paintings. The real gems of Macias gallery were Tom’s abstract painting of a bridge in the Hague, Netherlands and his cartoon drawings from the early 90s when Tom was drawing a daily cartoon for the Superior Sun. The most overheard crowd comment was “this is a great little town, we will be back next year.” Homes: First stop on the Home Tour at 124 Lime Street is a brick red adobe home. Charming decor, memorabilia and local art works greet visitors throughout this cozy property. Each tastefully appointed room in this home reflect the owner’s passion for art and flamboyant color. An enclosed front porch offers a relaxing

respite. The current owner is local art afficionado and owner of Porters Café, Lynn Heglie. Heglie purchased this home in 1994 and completed major renovations. Some think this home built in 1912, but the actual date is undocumented. It is the birthplace of local resident Andy Besich, now 90 years of age. The Steve Drakovich family occupied the quaint adobe for a number of years as well. Heglie’s tender loving care, renovations and appointments in this house make one feel immediately transported to the comfort and allure of southwestern living. Next stop at 60 Neary Street finds Frank Weltmer and Rita Wentzel on hand welcoming tour goers. This open floor plan bungalow was first built by accomplished local artist Wayne Dodd and utilized as an Art Studio. Weltmer and Dodd remain very good friends as evidenced by a plaque surrounded by grape vines over the front entry that says “Wayne Dodd Memorial Horned Lizard Preserve” and several of Dodd’s artworks still on display. Weltmer, a 1967 ASU Biology graduate, completely remodeled the stucco home. This tidy cabin refuge features a stucco faced fireplace with native stones, knotty elder cabinets, cabin style knotty pine interior

doors, and an attractively redone bathroom and kitchen inside. All the furnishings have been either refinished by, or made by Frank. On the outside is unpainted iron oxide tinted stucco, front and rear decks with latilla overhangs, Sonoran style landscaping and an absolutely spectacular 360 degree view of Apache Leap and the surrounding mountain ranges. It would be impossible not to enjoy time spent at this home. An enjoyable walk leads to the next tour home at 602 Lime Street, another Adobe home dating back to 1912 in a neighborhood that brings the charm of old Mexico to mind. This property, owned and restored by artist Charles L. Davison, serves as an artist’s studio and on occasion a shop. This home began as a one room adobe with a dirt floor, no electricity, indoor plumbing and, of course, an outhouse. Over the years as families grew, rooms were added. Special attention was paid to keeping with the original design by finding old house parts during renovations. This property has abundant works of local artists, antiques and collectibles on display for sale. The local community benefits from a portion of the proceeds being donated to local non-profits. It is said that this dwelling is looked over by a benevolent female spirit who on occasion appears or moves objects about. This spirit reveals herself to save life and prevent destruction of the home. A documented incident details a man being wakened by a woman at the foot of his bed pulling on blankets. The man was amazed, the home filled with smoke. The man quickly discovered and extinguished a small kitchen fire. This old world property certainly has enchanting echoes of the past throughout. A short jaunt over to 610 West Sonora Street leads to a home that the owner refers to as “The Dream Come True.” In 2005 the owner and her husband were on a day trip to Superior from

TourContinued from Page 7

Mesa. Husband and wife both found themselves captivated by the quaintness and of the town of Superior and the beauty of the surrounding countryside. Before long they came upon this Adobe home. To her great dismay her husband fell in love with this home. The building had no roof and required complete renovations. It took five years of hard work to get the home into move in condition while living in a park model placed in the backyard. Sadly, the owner’s husband succumbed to illness two years ago and was never able to live in the home he envisioned. He lived long enough to see his dream home and a specialty store in Superior take shape. The owner will continue with renovations until finished in tribute to her late husband and his vision. The interior of this abode now has spectacular splashes of bold southwest colors, a floor to ceiling fireplace ornamented with native rocks and a spacious hearth, and is laden with tasteful works of art and antiques throughout. A claw foot bathtub adorns the bathroom. The kitchen is the type that you want to enjoy visiting with friends, which is exactly what was happening on Saturday. This home exudes comfort, a warm heart and enduring vision. South of Highway 60 sits 727 West Simpson Street. As soon as one enters the courtyard surrounding this home different cultures of the world are there for exploration. A Navajo sweat lodge and scared fire pit where Native American Medicine Men perform monthly full moon ceremonies first draws the eye. A legacy to the original owner of 75 years is displayed with only edible and medicinal plants in abundance. Nearly all of the furnishings are gifts handed down from relatives that are as cherished a loved one. The colors of each room are symbolic. Purple in the kitchen representing precious food. The sacred color yellow in the entryway symbolizes the Apache and Hopi cultures blessing by yellow corn

pollen offering forgiveness, understanding and protection. The bedroom, a tranquil blue. Orange in the living room honoring the purity and contemplation of the Buddhist faith. Owner Jeffery Ferns is a worldwide traveler and all of the adornments in his home reflect his travels. This home reflects abounding harmony and celebrates differences while recognizing how much the people of the world share in common. The final stop on the tour brings another unusual home that had its ups and downs over the years. Current Owners Mari and Chas Jackson delight in the homes history that reflects the economics of Superior’s mining history. The Jacksons are well schooled on their home’s history which dates back to the 1940s. George Sepulveda, an early home recycler, sold the home to his son Jack in 1962. The Sepulveda family invested much effort into the then small property. After being sold in 1969 hard times hit and neglect set in. Two years ago, Chas and Mari bought the home and became ‘home rescuers.’ Major renovations were the only option. In the 1960s this property was a little square building with a carport. Now it is a spacious residence. This home is currently undergoing a transformation that includes a studio for Mari, an accomplished artist. Much of Mari’s work adorns their home. The living room is spacious and warm with a fireplace. The kitchen and bathroom are both splendid redos. In tones of white and slate gray the home carries a theme of friendly comfort and is very welcoming, as is the Jackson family. The landscaping is a work in progress and features retaining walls, a low wall patio and a centrally located water patio with a fireplace. The planting of trees, rose bushes, bougainvillea and a low wall of succulents will bring all the comfort and style inside to the outdoors. All the renovations and improvements done on a shoe string budget are amazing. The Jacksons consider it a home that has been rescued twice.
