Correction

Editor, Superior Sun: I guess it’s the old saying, it is how you look at the numbers. So, I am impressed, Mayor. You claimed that you cut the town deficit from $300,000 to $84,000 since you and the new administration took over in November. I believe the former Town Manager, Roy Chavez, stated in your council meeting that it was unbelievable to be able to

accomplish this and it was just a smoke screen. Well, Mr. Chavez, you might be right, but, let’s just add up the numbers: You claim that you cut the town’s debt by $216,000. You must remember that the town received $100,000 from Resolution Copper Company at the beginning of this year. The money went directly into the general fund. It was not

Letter to the Editor: Still looking for answers from the town governmentdirected to any specific project, as has been done in the past. Also, you received $80,000 from Central Arizona Project (CAP) for selling our portion that we paid for in the past. I believe it was a two-year delay because Arizona Water Company was delaying our refund. The Town received this refund this past year. Thank you to CAP for helping us pay the mortgage. So, now that leaves us $36,000 that is not accounted for. Only, it is accounted for. Ms. Wentzel declared to the Council, in November, a freezing of the budget and also a hiring freeze; but, there was no hiring freeze for the Mayor and Ms. Wentzel and our Police Chief is still a dispatcher. Remember, because of the freeze in the

Town’s budget, the street funds increased (called HURF) and Veto Cervantes was specially hired (this position was not posted as the law requires) to spend the money before the end of the budget year. Also, more importantly, the town employees there were promised a raise in December (this action was approved by the former Mayor and Council); it never happened. For some reason, nobody (new Mayor and Council) wants to talk about it. So, thank you, Town employees for your sacrifice, for your contribution to cutting the Town deficit. You have put food on their table. You are right, Mr. Chavez: It is a smoke screen. Since there is a surplus in the HURF account, at least give the street worker their raises.

It is odd that the Council has not received a detailed financial report from the $100, 000 accounting software program. This will give a detailed revenue and expenditure report. The Mayor, again, partially answers the public questions concerning the hiring of personnel. I am asking about the hiring of people that were not in posted positions. I am talking about Veto Cervantes (retired) as street director, Katherine Arnold (owner of Arnold motors, retired) as part of Town finance and Sylvia Perez (retired) as part of town administration. In the last Town Council meeting, the Mayor made a comment about my recent letters to the editor, that he was not going to get into a letter to letter campaign, that I should be at the Town Council meetings to ask my questions. I wish you would answer the questions that have been asked to you in a letter in the local paper, because these are not just my questions, but, questions the residents of Superior are asking. You also know, Mayor, that if an item is not listed on a Town Council agenda, you cannot answer or even have an open discussion. Ask those high-priced Town

Attorneys. Wow! Our team is so large that we have two Town Attorneys. If you are planning to list all the questions for which we want answers on the next Town Council agenda, then I will certainly be there. So, either answer the questions in a letter to the community or list the items on your Town Council Agenda. Your additional remarks about that my letters to the editor are only to sell newspapers, then simply answer the questions. The final issue is, again, Resolution Copper Company. I guess Mr. Mayor, you have forgotten to ask my tough questions, again as well as the rest of the Council. You, again, made a comment that I should have been there to ask my questions toward Resolution Copper. Why should I be there to ask those questions that we, as a community, share? But, I guess the Mayor and the Council don’t share the same concerns. I heard Resolution Copper met with some community leaders before the Town Council meeting on Thursday, May 3, and the former Mayor was present. It was told to me that the former Mayor asked many

questions about issues between Resolution and the Town. He even asked to answer my questions that I am seeking answers to. So to the Mayor and Council, why did you not ask Resolution Copper the same questions? Are you not concerned about the water issues, the tailing dumping grounds, the lands that the Town lost by the new bill in Congress, and about the Highway 60 by-pass? You must make Resolution Copper respond, in a public forum, for the record; especially in a Town Council meeting, to keep them accountable. Again,

are we headed backwards, as when the Town Council was influenced by Magma Copper. You, Mayor and Council, are you now influenced by Resolution Copper as a majority of the Council – including you, Mayor – has ties to Resolution Copper. Finally, a new question: Mr. Mayor, why did you not have to resign, since you worked for Pinal County, when you ran into a recall election? According to the Hatch Act, as stated by our County Supervisor Rios, it effects all levels of government. Again, thank you to the residents of Superior for providing me with vital information concerning our Town, in

exposing the truth. In your words, again, Mayor: be transparent. To the residents of Superior, start calling your Mayor and Council Members and demand answers. Town Hall’s number is 520-689-5752. Mayor ? Lopez’s is 520-827-4119. Peralta ? Aguilar’s is 520-827-9936. Tameron’s is 520-827-0080. Tomerlin’s is 520-827-9278. Lastly, Guiterrez ‘s number is 520-689-2156. To the Mayor and Council members: my number is 520-827-1073, and I am still waiting for your return call. /s/ Manuel “Mango” OrtegaLong time Superior Resident

By Mila Lira Two men from Michigan who were visiting Superior after a trip to Las Vegas were assaulted in an armed robbery on Sunday, May 6. The two were invited by two young women who they met in Las Vegas to join them at a party in Superior. The two men followed the women to Phoenix and then eventually arrived at the

party in Superior which was held at an abandoned house on Lobb and Wight Streets. Upon entry to the house the two men were met by the armed robbers, who robbed them both at gunpoint. One of the men was hit on the head and was taken to Scottsdale Osborne Hospital. The other Michigan man fled the scene but returned to the Superior

Police Department three days later to see if any of their property had been recovered. At this time only the victim’s car was found. Due to the ongoing investigation the type of guns used in the assault and amount of money stolen was not disclosed. The two suspects in the armed robbery are said to

FLORENCE – The Pinal County Board of Supervisors has chosen Clark L. Smithson to be the new Supervisor for District Two. Smithson will be sworn in as District 2 supervisor in the coming days. A date and time was not determined at press time. He will represent the district that covers Apache Junction, San Tan Valley, Queen Valley and parts of Florence and Queen Creek. He replaces Bryan Martyn who resigned his seat on April 30 to accept the position of Arizona State Parks Director. Smithson, who resides in Apache Junction, is currently a City Councilmember for the City of Apache Junction, a position he will resign to take the oath of County Supervisor. Smithson has served on Pinal County’s Planning and Zoning Commission, on the Superstition Mountain Community Facilities District and was a director of the Chandler Education Foundation and has filled leadership roles in many other civic and community groups. He is also a former city planner and city manager who currently does substitute teaching for grades 3 through 12. In his application materials, Smithson said he will not be a candidate in November’s election for county supervisor. “My desire is to fill the remainder of the current term expiring January 2013, then run again next spring for the position of city councilmember in the City of Apache Junction, which position I currently am honored to hold,” he stated in the cover letter. Smithson’s selection came after a process that required individuals to submit applications,

letters of interest and/or résumés by Friday, May 7. The qualified applicants were invited to make a five-minute presentation in a work session at a special public meeting on Wednesday. This afternoon, the Supervisors met in open session to discuss and select

a successor to former Supervisor Martyn. “I am confident we have selected a person of integrity, character and, above all, one who cares about the issues in their district,” Chairman Pete Rios said. “I look forward to working with Supervisor Smithson for the remainder

of his term. I will do everything I can to make his transition to the office as smoothly as possible.” “Mr. Smithson has a wealth of experience in government, including service on Pinal County’s Planning and Zoning Commission, as well as responsible positions

in city government as a planner and city manager,” Supervisor David Snider said. “I was impressed by his wealth of experience in government and his varied other interests and civic activities.” Smithson holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from

UCLA and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Southern California. He has also taken postgraduate studies in Education Administration at ASU. Smithson moved to Arizona in 1984 and has resided in Apache Junction since 2001.

By Mila Lira The Oak Flat Campground on the Globe Ranger District, Tonto National Forest, will be closed to the general public Saturday, May 12, until Tuesday, May 22. The closure will be in effect May 12, 12:01 a.m. until May 22 at midnight. Adjacent Forest Service land is available for recreational use. The closure has been requested to allow for the privacy and security of tribal activities for traditional and cultural purposes. The San Carlos Apache Tribe has

requested the use of the Oak Flats Campground to host a private religious tribal ceremony. Oak Flats is a no fee campground therefore there were no fees charged to the tribes for private use of the campground. Paige Rockett the Public Information Officer from the Tonto National Forest explained that the San Carlos Apache tribal government officially requested use of the campground through government to government communication. This event is being held as an official

Soon, a Safe Journey House, an advocacy center for victims of domestic abuse,

will be fi rmly established in San Manuel. There is just one thing

Safe Journey House in need of volunteersholding it back. Unfortunately, that one thing is not a lack of potential clients. “We operate primarily with volunteers and are currently in desperate need for more volunteer advocate assistants,” said Linda Kadlecek. An assistant would work under the supervision of a trained advocate, helping out as needed, with such tasks as making copies, answering the telephone, entertaining children, fi ling and research. The shifts are four hours each from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1-5 p.m., Monday – Friday. Volunteers who can spare

four hours per week, bi-weekly or even once a month are sought for each shift. A person on the JOBS program or in need of community service work might fi nd that they are the ideal applicant. What better way to help yourself, by honing job skills and gaining experience, than by helping others? For more information, contact Linda Kadlecek, at (520) 487-2355, or call either Carol Hefl ebower or Doris Haynes at the center, (520) 385-4970. The Safe Journey House is located at 212 East Fifth Street in San Manuel.

More than 50 people turned out for the Fairview Cemetery Cleanup on Saturday, May 12. The Pinal County Sheriffs Department sent a van full of inmates to help with the clean up. High school students attended as did members of the various community groups such as the Chamber of Commerce and Optimist Club. Several individual residents and families also used the day to clean up their family plots. For well over six hours these volunteers raked, cut trees and weeds and also picked up trash. Allied Waste, BHP and Resolution Copper provided roll offs. Other local businesses provided goods and services to the event including Superior Mortuary, Red Bear Outfi tters, Tameron Janitorial, Southwest Gas and Tameron Ice. The Town of Superior also provided door prizes such as family pool passes, lunches at the Senior Center and a month of free sewer service.

By Mila Lira Earning the title of Valedictorian and Salutatorian does not come easy. One of the first conversations high school guidance counselors tell Freshman is how important their grade point average is and how they can have the opportunity to earn the title of Valedictorian and Salutatorian. Earning these titles requires dedication, perseverance and the ability to study. The Superior High School Valedictorian for 2012 is Jesse Zavala; the class salutatorian is Sabrina Castillo. The Superior Sun had the opportunity to interview these stellar students on what was actually their last Friday as SHS Seniors. Often graduations of any type bring on tears of joy or even fear, both commented that they were not shedding any tears and were actually very excited about their upcoming graduation. Both agreed that their mothers were probably shedding more tears than they were. Jesse Zavala is the son of Michael and Kathy Zavala. He has attended Superior Unified School District since Kindergarten. He is graduating with a 4.0 grade point average. Following graduation Jesse is planning on attending Arizona State University and will major in Music. Zavala earned $56,000 in scholarships which includes the New American University Scholarship to ASU which is $13,000 a year for four years. After high school Zavala would like to work in a music studio and eventually own his studio where he will produce music. During his high school career he was also active in many clubs and sports. He has been a member

of DECA, Math Club, FCCLA, Robotics, National Honor Society, Catholic Youth Ministry, and he also played basketball and baseball. Sabrina Castillo is the daughter of Manuel and Jessica Castillo. She has attended Superior Unified School District since Kindergarten. She is graduating with a 3.786 grade point average. Sabrina has accepted the Promise for the Future scholarship from Central Arizona College. She plans on attending the Aravaipa Campus as a Science Major. After attending CAC for two years she plans on attending Arizona State University where she plans on majoring in Biological Science. After high school Castillo plans on either working in the mining industry or for a game and fish department. Castillo has been an active high school student; she has been a member of FCCLA, DECA, National Honor Society, Math Club, Yearbook, Student Council, Catholic Youth Ministry and she also has been a member of the Cheer Squad and Softball team. Our interview included a little more than the standard resume of accomplishments. Questions such as: Where do you see yourself in five years? What or who has inspired you? What will you miss most about high school? What would you change about your high school years? What do you see Superior looking like when you return for your 10 year reunion? Any hopes for your class? These questions brought out a different conversation between the two and changed the dialog from what sounded like another scholarship application to a conversation about the past and the future. What or who has inspired

you? Zavala shared that his father has inspired him. He shared that his whole family has musical ability and that he has been playing on his own since he was about nine years old. He said that his father’s musical ability has inspired him to learn more about music. Castillo said that being outdoors has inspired her to choose her major. One of her favorite hobbies is hunting.Where do you see yourself in five years? Zavala explained that he sees himself working in a studio, learning more about his chosen career field as an audio engineer. He hopes to be learning more about audio engineering for television and music. Castillo said in five years she would like to be living here in Superior and working for Resolution Copper or one of the other regional mines. What will you miss most about High School? Both explained that they will miss seeing their friends. Castillo

StudentsContinued from Page 8

commented that she will miss playing high school sports. Both agreed that they will not miss the drama that often happens in high school. The two also commented that they would not change a thing about their high school careers. Castillo said, “The decisions and experiences I had in High School made me the person I am today.”Do you think you are afforded more advantages or less advantages by graduating from a small school? Castillo said that she felt there were more opportunities do be involved with things in a smaller school. She explained in the bigger schools all the kids can’t all play sports or be in the clubs, there is a limit to how many students can participate.

Zavala agreed that there are more opportunities to be involved in activities in smaller schools but also said that in the smaller schools such as Superior there are also not as many programs that they have in the larger schools. He also commented that because their class is smaller they are like a family and that is a different advantage. Zavala also explained that because Superior did not have a music program while he was in school his love for learning music was something he had to do on his own and not as a school program. In 10 years do you think things will be different in Superior? What will be different and why? Without any hesitation both students said they hoped the Resolution Copper Mine would be

operating and that with that project the town would get bigger. Both said they hoped to see the school have more students and programs as a result of the mine re-opening. Zavala explained that he would like to see band and track programs be added. Castillo said she hopes to see the athletic programs win more state championships as well. Zavala said he sees the SHS class of 2012 playing a role in the future of Superior because “each member in our class has great potential and determination to get the job done.” Bright futures, indeed. Good luck to the Class of 2012! Superior High School graduation ceremonies will be held on Friday, May 25, 2012 at 6 p.m. Superior Memorial Football Field.

A total of 58 awards were presented to 50 different students during Central Arizona College’s student awards ceremony on April 12 at its Superstition Mountain Campus, including one to a Superior resident. Richard Matthews was named EMT Student of the Year for CAC’s Superstition Mountain Campus. Congratulations, Richard!

By Mila Lira The Superior Junior-Senior High held its annual STEM fest last week. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Each student was required to create a project that showed off his or her science skills. The eighth grade science students prepared carnival

games out of cardboard. The games all required a certain element of physics to create and compete in the game. Seventh graders prepared science displays such as the how to determine blood types, the Punnett square, DNA as well as showed off their project boards on genetic diseases. The Superior High School

Career and Technical Students also participated in the event by displaying their competition boards and scrapbooks that they used to compete at FCCLA and DECA competitions. Junior High Science teacher Cathy Denogean was the teacher responsible for coordinating the successful event.

Mother’s Day ...

By Rev. Dennis Van GorpFamily Life Christian Center From Psalm 23 we read: “The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness . . . I will fear no evil, because the Lord is with me at all times.” David is describing God’s loving actions with His people by comparing them to the duties of a shepherd with his flock of sheep. Because they must have plenty of good food, he

finds a nice pasture filled with lush, green grass. Since sheep are afraid of moving water and will not drink from it, he finds a pool of calm fresh water where they can drink their fill. Some paths in the wilderness are dangerous to travel on, so he finds the roads that are safe for the sheep. He stays with them, carrying the weapons needed to protect them from the predators and thieves. The sheep know his voice and it comforts them so that they have nothing to fear. John chapter 10 continues with this comparison.

Pastor’s CornerVerse 3 says the sheep listen to His voice. Jesus is speaking here, and He says in verses 14 and 27: “I am the good shepherd, I know my sheep and my sheep know me. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me.” The shepherd, Jesus Christ, actually develops a relationship to the sheep. They know him and his voice and are able to trust

him in all things. They rely on him for provision, direction, guidance and protection. We are the Lord’s sheep. We follow him and respond to his loving care. It’s all about relationship. As a Christian, we are not to exist simply as pew sitters on Sundays. The Scriptures define how we interact with God as a marriage relationship. We

don’t just know ‘about’ the Lord, we get close to him and develop a loving relationship with him. We are to know His voice and love to hear it as He talks with us. We are to regularly carry on a conversation (prayer), with Jesus; sharing with Him our needs, problems, concerns, cares and love. Walk this life’s pathway with your Shepherd, Lord

and Savior, Jesus Christ. Allow Him to provide and lovingly care for you. Express your love to Him as He pours out His love on you. This isn’t just a game we play. It’s how to live life in such a way that problems, difficulties and anxieties are overcome by God’s great love, compassion and authority. Love you! It’s time to experience God’s wonderful blessings! Follow and obey the Lord Jesus, our Great Shepherd.

Councilmember Nosie remains a strong voice of opposition for the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act and Resolution Copper. The land exchange once approved through Congress will allow Resolution Copper to own the Oak Flat campgrounds in exchange for 5,300 acres of conservation lands that Resolution Copper will give to the Federal Government.

Oak Flat Campground is approximately four miles east of Superior and ½ mile south of Highway 60. This area is a developed non-fee campground used primarily for primitive camping and off- highway recreation. The campground area has one main entrance and one alternate entrance. Forest Road (FR) 2438 is the main entrance and will be closed utilizing barricades. The second entrance is FR 469. This road will also be closed utilizing barricades.

By Selma Williams Gila Community College Wellness Center Coordinator Another fantastic week has gone, and I am looking forward to the next week. I have been looking at bok choy, also known as white cabbage, or Napa cabbage. Bok choy is a main staple in Asian foods. It would be difficult to find a main dish in a Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, or Philippine restaurant that did not have bok choy in it. This vegetable from the cabbage family has

From the Wellness Center: White Cabbagebeen a table staple dating back to the Ming dynasty. When looking for bok choy look for firm, white stalks topped with crisp, green leaves. Bok choy is available year-round in most supermarkets. With the light flavor it has, it can be used raw in salads, or as a cooked vegetable. Bok choy is a heavy hitter in nutrition. It has 45mg of Vitamin C, 45 mcg of Vitamin K, 19mg of Magnesium,

and 252mg of potassium; this naming just a few of the valuable nutrients. I found a wonderful recipe from whfoods.org for bok choy.15-Minute Healthy Sautéed Chicken & Bok Choy:Prep and Cook Time: 15 minutes Ingredients: • 2 TBS low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth• 1 cup chopped scallions• 2 TBS fresh minced ginger

• 2 skinless, boneless chicken breasts cut into bite-sized pieces• 1½ cups sliced fresh shiitake mushrooms• 4 cups chopped bok choy• 2 TBS soy sauce• 1 TBS rice vinegar• Salt and white pepper to taste• Pinch of red pepper flakesDirections: 1. Heat broth in a stainless steel skillet. 2. When broth begins to steam, add scallions and Healthy Sauté for 2 minutes. 3. Add ginger and continue to sauté for another minute. 4. Add chicken and continue to sauté. 5. After 2-3 minutes, add shiitake mushrooms and bok choy. Continue to sauté for another 3-4 minutes, and then add soy sauce, rice vinegar, salt, and pepper. When you give this a try let me know how you liked it. Until next time, Woo Hoo!Selma
