Asarco, last week, had more than 90,000 pounds of copper anodes returned to them following a traffic stop by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
According to DPS Public Information Officer R. Molina, on Sept. 27, 2012, officers made a traffic stop on I-10 near Casa Grande and found 48 anodes in a commercial vehicle
trailer. Each one weighs approximately 880 pounds. The discovery at the traffic stop led DPS investigators to a residence in the 6300 block of West Tangerine Road in Marana with a
search warrant. Officers located 54 more copper anodes and seized three truck tractors and semi-trailers, a fork lift and two hand carts, according to a news release.
Representatives from Asarco in Hayden identified the copper anodes at the scene. The copper was valued at approximately $300,000. Thomas Aldrich,
Vice President of Environmental Affairs at Asarco, confirmed the information, stating, “Asarco is working with law enforcement on the matter.”

By Mila Besich-Lira In the early 80’s, when the Magma Mine closed the community of Superior experienced many difficult changes. Not only did many people lose their jobs and move away but those residents who stayed in the area lost access to many services that they were accustomed too. One of those services was hospital and clinic services. When the mine shut down so did the Magma Hospital and soon after that clinic services were also reduced then closed. Community leaders understood that the economic health of Superior would be determined on having adequate health care for residents. Without access to quality health care, it would be difficult to attract new residents or businesses. There was always a hope that a hospital or clinic would open in Superior and give residents and business owners some healthcare options. While the Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center board was researching expansion and land options in Superior, America was experiencing a major recession, one that caused many major American car manufacturers to

close dealerships. This recession caused Chrysler to close the Arnold Motor Sales Chrysler dealership in Superior. There is a saying “When one door closes another door opens.” This was the case for the Arnold family. While they were closing their dealership and making decisions on what to do, next they decided to sell their property on the highway to the CVRMC. Construction for the new clinic began in April of 2011. Last week clinic officials, community leaders and local residents celebrated this milestone with a grand opening celebration. Those in attendance were treated to snacks made by the dietary department of the hospital and tours of the clinic by the staff. Children in attendance were given a special interactive tour of the clinic by Superior High
School students attending the Cobre Valley Institute of Technology health care programs. After the tour, the children were given special goody bag and a door prize opportunity to win $200 for their classroom. The winner of the door prize was Vanessa Contreras a fifth grade teacher at John F. Kennedy elementary school. The clinic features three wings that will allow more providers to serve Superior and in the future, they hope to have a full service pharmacy service
and radiology department. Currently prescriptions can be filled through the hospital in Globe and the prescriptions are delivered to Superior in the afternoon. They also will be offering physical therapy services at the clinic in the coming weeks and a surgeon will be servicing the clinic. The clinic is open Mon. through Wed. from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Fri. from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. To make an appointment at the clinic, submit a prescription or find out more about the clinic you call 520-689-2423.

SUPERIOR, Ariz.- Running out of gas in this historic copper-mining town 12 years ago may have been one of the best things to happen to painter Chuck Davison. “I was looking for studio all across - ran out of gas in Superior and met Lyn Heglie. Sure, I was familiar with the town – but this time I ended up staying; captivated by the beauty of this area – the mountains, and topography; birds, animals and desert vistas. Scenery here rivals Sedona, but with a smaller population, quiet, and real estate that remains affordable even to artists. I realized I could live here and maintain business and art contacts in Phoenix, where I’d lived for 25 years.”
Davison is among a half-dozen artists now based in Superior who will open there homes and studios to visitors as part of the Dia De Colores art festival Oct. 20. Drive Superior’s Main Street and a few of his outdoor murals give a preview of his work. “My style has been described as contemporary southwestern; and signature elements include mixed media and ‘found objects’ such as fabric, beads, and stones that are incorporated in my paintings – as well as unusual solvents and paints to heighten color. Working a graphic design company made me pay attention to color trends and how they’ve changed over time; people have moved away from the
earth tones and pastels that were so common two decades ago – and as an artist I find it particularly freeing that I can experiment with more variety and vivid color–buyers’ appreciation for this style of work opened that door. Among my favorite local elements are rusted metal objects, locally-mined copper – and oxidized copper-related minerals such as chrysacolla that have their own unique hues of green and blue.” Murals around downtown Superior include a herd of horses, the face of the sun, petroglyphs, abstracts – and a vivid prickly pear cactus on an exterior wall of Porter’s café which announced the town’s recent prickly pear festival. By far his most
prolific subject has been Indians – paintings inspired by the ancient hoodoos and spires of red rock just a few miles uphill and alongside highway 60 through Queen Creek Canyon. “First time I drove that stretch of road back in the 1990s I was awed by the cliffs and towers of stone - so many of them anthropomophic with heads and faces. I was inspired to paint Indians, and I’ve probably completed several hundred over the years.” Davison’s work has been exclusively represented by the Wilde Meyer Gallery on Marshall Way in Scottsdale since 1988. By Mila Besich-Lira Last week Superior and the Resolution Copper Project had a visit from Rep. Andy Tobin (R). Tobin is the Speaker of the House for the Arizona House of Representatives. He was accompanied by Rep. Frank Pratt (R) District 23 and Rep. Brenda Barton (R) District 5. During this time of year it is not uncommon for those running for elected office to visit the Resolution Copper project this trip was slightly different due to the fact that Tobin and Barton are not running for office in Superior’s district. Tobin expressed during
Speaker of the Arizona House visits Resolution Copperhis tour that he wanted to take a tour of the copper project to see how the Arizona Legislature can help to move the project along. Currently the project is awaiting a federal land exchange to be passed in the US Congress. Vickie Peacy, Vice President of Legal, Environmental and External Relations, started the tour at the Resolution Copper Main Street office where the three representatives were given an in-depth briefing on the project including the economic benefits, how the mine will be constructed and the importance of building a safe mine. Peacy and the
communications staff of Resolution Copper explained some of the challenges that the company faces from local opposition groups as well as their commitment to protect Apache Leap and provide employment opportunities to residents in Superior and the Copper Corridor. Based on the facts shared during the briefing staff at Resolution Copper explained that 90% of Superior residents are in favor of the project while and in a recent poll 80 percent of residents in the State of Arizona favor the project. Following the briefing and safety video, the elected guests and their staffs took a tour of
the east and west plant operations of Resolution Copper. At the west, plant viewpoint they were able to see the clean up that Resolution Copper has completed on the old mining operations of Magma and BHP. During the tour of the east plant shaft supervisors from Cementation Randy Seppla and Andy Bravence met the candidates and explained how the shafts are being constructed and explained what the local miners experience during the construction process. The two long time miners explained that many of these young men are local and because of the training
programs they conduct, it has allowed many young residents to be gainfully employed here in Superior. After the tour of the mine, the elected officials met with local residents and community leaders at Porter’s Cafe for a meet and greet. Tobin took a few minutes to explain that “Arizona is making a comeback” he attributed that comeback to the efforts of small towns like Superior and companies like Resolution who are doing all that they can to help. He believes that the Arizona economy cannot come back in spots, it cannot just come back
in the urban areas, the rural areas need economic opportunities as well. He explained that Representatives Barton and Pratt are working with him to help continue to build the economy in Arizona. Tobin explained that Arizona moved up from eighth to fourth in having a competitive tax structure in the west. He also explained that the state legislature has put money back into the mental health care programs as well as returning 120 million into K-12 education and the expansion of the University of Arizona medical school in downtown Phoenix.

By Rev. Dennis Van GorpFamily Life Christian Center In Isaiah 43, we read about Christians who go through a time of suffering. First of all, the Lord qualifies who He is talking to. He refers to those who have been redeemed and are called by His name. There will be seasons in our lives when we pass through the waters, pass through the rivers or walk through the fires. Life is guaranteed to have storms, troubles and difficulties,
but they are not to rule over us. The Lord promises to be our protection and safety in all of these things. He will walk with us in the waters, the rivers will not be able to drown us nor will the fires burn us. God never said that life would be easy. Some Christians, when sharing their faith, will tell you that Jesus will make your life easier. When a person accepts the Lord, they gain a new spiritual enemy

“The early voting sites are very popular with our residents,” said Recorder Dean-Lytle. “We enjoy having people use these sites, but voters should remember that we only have two employees at each location. If a lot of people show up at once to vote, it may take a little time to get in and get to the ballot box, there are a lot of issues, offices and candidates involved in this election.” To request an early ballot-log on to the Recorder’s website at (shortened URL) http://goo.gl/b6PAB.

who is angry and will do anything to slow or stop them. This creates new problems in our life. The Psalmist, David, spoke these words: “Even though I walk through the valley of death, I will not have any fear, because God is walking with me, by my side.” The Lord, the Holy One of Israel, our Savior, has declared: “You are precious and honored in my sight, I love you very much. Do not be afraid of what life brings, because I am with you.” Trust in the Lord and do not depend on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him and He will direct the pathway of your life! Amen!
