By Rev. Dennis Van GorpFamily Life Christian Center In 2 Kings 18:12 we read, “they neither listened to the commands nor carried them out.” Previously, it says that they had violated the Lord’s covenant/or promise, with them. We are told in the Ten Commandments that our God is a jealous God, He wants our full attention and obedience. There are two related problems here. Not only did the Israelites not do what God asked of them, they did not even bother to listen to Him. Jesus said that, ‘My sheep know My voice.’ Obviously, they knew who the voice belonged to and who was speaking, so they had no excuse. James 1:22 tells us that we are not to just listen to God’s Word, we are to do what it says. If you tell your child, ‘don’t touch that hot pan on the stove,’ you expect them to obey. Should they choose to touch it, they will get burned. It is a matter of listening and doing – following through with what was instructed. The Scriptures tell of many times when God spoke. As a believer in God, we should know His voice. When He speaks, we are to listen. When we have heard, we are to do what was asked of us. We understand that God is truth; therefore He does not lie to us or expect the impossible. He asks only

The March 28, 2012 issue of The Superior Sun featured a Letter to the Editor from Supe-rior resident Manuel “Mongo” Ortega. Ortega has taken a public stand against further mining operations at the Oak Flat campground and the surrounding area. Ortega contends that in depth environ-mental studies needed to take place showing an adequate, un-contaminated future water supply for Superior and the proposed mining operation. In his letter, Ortega vows to continue to fight against the mining operation at Oak Flat. In one part of his letter Ortega states to the mayor that

“the Retired Miners group that were against the Resolution Cop-per Mine over Oak Flat gave you support ... you and the Council voted to support the mining op-eration.” Ortega criticizes the Council for not voicing “big concerns over the proposed mining opera-tion,” (Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act) with the exception of Council-man Chris Tameron. Tameron voted against support until ques-tions concerning the water supply were answered. Ortega maintains that more than half the Council should not have voted because of conflict of interest.

In fact, and not noted in Orte-ga’s letter, during the Council meeting on Feb. 2, the Superior Town Council vote was 3 to 1 in favor of the Letter of Support for the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act. Council members Hank Gutier-rez, John Tomerlin and Olga Lopez recused themselves from voting due to conflict of interest. Tameron voted no. Mayor Jayme Valenzuela, Gilbert Aguilar and Soyla Peralta voted yes. Council then directed the town staff to work with town clerk Rita Wen-tzel to compose the letter and submit it for review to the town attorneys.

“Mining is here to stay,” Va-lenzuela said at the meeting. “I supported this project when I ran for office. We look forward to working with you to address NEPA, water, and other environ-mental issues.” During that meeting Bruce Richardson of Resolution Cop-per addressed Council request-ing an updated letter of support from the Mayor and Council for the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act and the Resolution Copper proj-ect. Richard said it was now an hour of need for Resolution Cop-per and the letter is important to

Compiled by Mila Lira At press time Copper was being sold at $3.94 a pound. This price reflects a penny overnight increase. On March 21, Governor Brewer signed Senate Bill 1054 which will allow mining companies to allow 12 hour shifts for underground workers. This bill which was introduced by Resolution Copper will take effect on July 19, 2012. Previous state law only allowed mining companies to allow for eight hour shifts underground in a 24 hour period; that law was written well before federal mining regulations and modern mining methods were put into effect. Officials from Resolution Copper explained that at this time this bill would potentially affect 90 of their 500 employees and contractors. Resolution does not plan on immediately moving to 12 hours shifts but is considering 10 hour shifts.Resolution Copper Work continues to progress on

the development of the number 10 and number 9 shafts at the Resolution Copper Project. At this time the company is reporting that the number 10 shaft is currently at 5,340 feet underground. The number nine shaft, which is undergoing rehabilitation, is currently at 3,020 feet. The number nine shaft is being modernized and rehabilitated.Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc has declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.3125 on common stock to the holders of record as of April 13, 2012. As previously announced in February 2012, FCX’s Board of Directors authorized an increase in the annual cash dividend on its common stock from $1.00 per share to $1.25 per share, payable quarterly at a rate of $0.3125 per share. The declaration and payment of dividends is at the discretion of FCX’s Board of Directors and will depend on

FCX’s financial results, cash requirements, future prospects, and other factors deemed relevant by the Board.Excelsior – Gunnison Project Excelsior Mining Corp. announced that it has engaged Haley & Aldrich, a national underground and environmental consulting firm with significant project permitting expertise, to develop a comprehensive permitting plan for the North Star deposit at the Company’s Gunnison Copper Project in southeast Arizona. Excelsior has engaged Haley & Aldrich to support the completion of two related tasks;• To design a hydrological program that will lead to a more complete understanding of North Star’s hydro-geologicalconditions. • To provide environmental, engineering and strategic services related to hydrologic studies that will lead to the successful permitting of the project. Excelsior also announced that

they have commenced their 2012 drilling program at the Gunnison Copper Project. The program has begun with the utilization of both a diamond drill rig and a reverse circulation drill rig. The first series of drill holes are being completed in order to acquire additional metallurgical data. Subsequent drilling will focus on additional hydrological and geological data acquisition, with the goal of the entire 2012 program being the completion of a pre-feasibility study by year’s end. “We are excited to be back drilling on Gunnison again,” stated Stephen Twyerould, President and CEO of Excelsior. “We have set an ambitious program for 2012 and, now that it is underway, we are looking forward to making significant progress in advancing the Gunnison project as quickly as possible.” The program is designed to advance the project

geologically, hydrologically and metallurgically. The resultant data will be used to optimize well field design, leaching solution composition, as well as provide critical information for groundwater quality control and ultimately, project reclamation, all of which will be essential as the project moves forward in the permitting process.Tombstone Exploration Program Tombstone Exploration Corporation announced that the Company has received approval for State Exploration Permits for minerals, including gold, silver

and copper in the eastern edge of the Tombstone Mining District. The additional permits, approved, encompass 2,163 acres in Cochise County, Tombstone, Arizona, adjacent to the 100 percent Company-owned Zebra property of 2,000 acres. The Zebra Prospect is an epithermal disseminated gold property located in Cochise County, Arizona, approximately three miles southeast of the town of Tombstone, in T20S, R23E, Sections 20, 21, 27, 28, 29, 32, 33 and 34. The property totals 4,163 acres and consists entirely of State land for which Arizona

State Prospecting Permits have been secured. It is believed that the prospect lies within the metallogenic zonation halo of the Tombstone District. The shallow ores of the central district were known to be high in silver and lower in gold. Conversely, and in accordance with zonational patterns, the Zebra Property has high gold, and relatively moderate silver values. During a detailed mapping

program during the 1980s, thirty-three samples were collected of jasperoid, jasperoid breccia, silica vein material, hematitically altered silty limestone, dolomite and silicified rhyolite porphyry. Seven of these samples assayed >.20 ounces per ton gold and another three assayed >.10 ounces per ton gold. The highest assay was 1.0268 ounces per ton gold collected from an outcrop of black to red jasperoid breccia. These historical assays strongly support previous assay data from the property and

suggest the occurrence of a large bulk tonnage disseminated gold deposit on the property. Geophysical surveys conducted on the property in the 1980s also suggest the possibility of a gold skarn deposit at depth. Alan Brown, President of Tombstone, stated, “With prices for metals at historic high levels, the time to move aggressively forward is now. We are currently planning an active exploration and near term drill program for the Zebra property based on recommendations in our new

43-101 completed by SRK Consulting last month.” The Tombstone Exploration Project is an exploration and development project within the historic Tombstone Mining District, Cochise County, southeastern Arizona. Detailed studies of the minerals of the Tombstone Mining District have shown a large number and wide assortment of mineralization including silver, gold, copper, lead, and zinc minerals, which have been described along with manganese, tellurium,

molybdenum, and vanadium. Although Tombstone is famous for bonanza silver deposits and is essentially a precious-metal district, the porphyry copper model of Lowell and Guilbert (1970) suggests the presence of a buried porphyry copper deposit at depth. Tombstone has the minerals rights to 11,863 acres of historical mining land and is the largest land holder in the Tombstone Mining District.Millrock Galiuro Project Millrock Resources Inc. announced that a hole being

drilled on the Fourmile prospect on the Galiuro property was abandoned prior to reaching target depth. The work was being funded by Vale Exploration Canada Inc. (“VEC”), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Vale S.A. (“Vale”) pursuant to an option agreement signed March 2, 2009. Vale has decided to terminate the option agreement. By Yolanda Najera-Ewing Departing Offi ce Manager Ruby Cervantes was feted at a farewell luncheon on Sunday, March 4, held at Saint Mary’s Center where a dozen different speakers all praised and thanked her for 22 years of service to Saint Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church. Leaders of the different church ministries as well as family members and friends all had some wonderful memory

and words of gratitude to share with Ruby. As Master of Ceremonies, Manny Ruiz introduced all of the speakers after giving a brief review of Ruby’s tenure at the church offi ce on Church and Main. Ruby was hired as the parish secretary in 1990 by Father Graff and has worked with four other Pastors in addition to Fr. Graff including Fr. Kadidy, Fr. Eber, Fr. Long and the current pastor, Fr. Aboyi. She has been

a religious education teacher at various grade levels since 1981, and a member of the Saint Francis Parish Council since its inception 12 years. Ruby is the Parish Council’s current president. Ruby’s other church activities include membership in the Parish Financial Committee for about a decade, membership in the Church Corporation Board of Directors serving as the board’s secretary, and her longest membership has been in the Church Fiesta Committee. The church members who keep track of the money collected were represented by Cindy Benson who noted that Ruby defi nitely keeps them all on their toes and on track. Dora Vasquez spoke on behalf of the church Altar Society and

thanked Ruby for all of her assistance throughout the years. Others who addressed those at the luncheon were Mike Zavala of the Knights of Columbus, Steve Lopez of the Fiesta Committee, Kathy Kornovich director of religious education, Yolanda Ewing former parish secretary and Pastor James Aboyi. Fr. Aboyi was adamant about how much Ruby would be missed. All stressed Ruby’s generosity and noted the specifi c tasks she completed on their behalf. Also addressing the group of over 100 parishioners were Ruby’s mother, Carol Marquez, and William Bribiescas a long term friend. Carol addressed those at the luncheon on her behalf and that of Ruby’s father, Arnold Marquez.

Carol said that the job of church offi ce manager is a stressful one which requires many off duty hours. The

point of Carol’s comments was that Ruby’s work never ended. She told of going

Two motorcyclists are dead and three others were injured Friday afternoon in a chain reaction accident caused when a motorcyclist lost control of his bike. Also involved in the accident were two other motorcycles and a Corvette. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, a black 2006 Suzuki motorcycle being driven by Dennis Flynn, 64, Glen Rock, Wyoming, was traveling northbound on State Route 177 south of Superior. He lost control of the motorcycle, causing the driver of the black 2001 Chevrolet Corvette identified as Robert Wilson of Kearny to take evasive action. The driver of a purple

2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle, Dennis McDonald, 66, Airdrie, Alberta, Canada, also collided with the Corvette and was launched from his motorcycle. Kathy Benson died on impact and McDonald died shortly after the

collision due to the injuries sustained. Flynn sustained a broken finger and fractured ankle and Wilson was treated and released for minor injuries. Ralph Benson sustained a broken

left ankle. DPS was unable to confirm whether the four motorcyclists were involved with the East Valley Firefighters Motorcycle Poker Run.

The highway was closed for an extended period of time from 3:02 p.m. until 7:48 p.m. while DPS and other emergency crews cleared the scene and investigated the accident.

what He knows we can handle. Over and over in the Bible, we see that obedience to God results in great blessings in our life. That should make our choice simple: Do what He says. Israel’s blessings came from their obeying God; when they followed the ways of the neighboring nations, they always ran into trouble. In order to do what was asked, it is necessary to understand all of the information. Spoken words then become practical ideas and workable concepts. Then – ‘the commands are carried out,’ the job gets done and the work is accomplished. When the Lord speaks to you, be sure to listen carefully, hear all that was said and understand it. You will then know what to do and how to do it. Give it your very best effort and take pride in a job well done! Receive the Lord’s blessings as you honor Him by following His guidance and directions. You will find peace and satisfaction in all that you do.

shopping with Ruby to pick up church supplies that filled the entire bed of Ruby’s truck and then of having to unload and store the supplies. She reported Ruby trekking to The Valley to buy flowers for the church on the many different church holidays. With tears in her eyes, Carol said that her daughter would be sorely missed. William spoke of Ruby’s loyalty to the church and its parishioners. He

affirmed that Ruby, in deed, tried to help everyone who walked into the church office. Ruby also choked back tears as she bid farewell to her job of the past two decades. But on a happy note, she will not be going very far. After being unemployed for 15 minutes, she was hired by the Town of Superior as an administrative assistant. A number of jokes were made about the fact that her last day on the job at the church was on Friday and she was hired by the Town on Monday at 8:15 a.m.

Community Action Human Resources Agency (CAHRA) has funding to assist eligible low-income homeowners, according to Mary Lou Rosales, Executive Director. Under the Weatherization program, improvements are made by CAHRA staff to help reduce energy consumption

and energy costs, Rosales said. A thorough assessment of the eligible home is performed including diagnostic and blower door testing to determine how weather-tight the home is and what improvements need to be made. A test to determine carbon monoxide leakage in the home is also performed.

Funding available for low-income homeowners Minor repairs are made to make the home safer, more sound and secure. Families are counseled as to changes in their energy use habits, which will complement the work done on the homes, and help promote the conservation of energy, she explained. “The savings after weatherization and replacement of the old air conditioners is amazing, Rosales added. Some households save 33% of their electrical bills. Weatherization repairs may include repair or replacement of cooling and heating systems. Repair or replacement of refrigerators, stoves and water heaters will also be considered. Homes needing larger repairs such as roofing, plumbing, electrical or major rehabilitation may not be eligible for the program. “After staff conducts the inspection, they will let the homeowner know if the home is eligible for the improvements. If not, they will provide referrals to other potential assistance in your area, if any sources exist,” Rosales added. The Weatherization program is funded by the Department of Energy and Low-Income Home

Energy Assistance Program through the Governor’s Office of Energy Policy, Salt River Project, Southwest Gas Corporation and Arizona Public Service. Funding for home repairs is provided by the Pinal Gila Council for Senior Citizens under the Older Americans Act Title III, and Utility, Repair, Replacement and Deposit funds through Arizona Community Action Agency Home Energy Assistance Fund Board. Eligibility includes: 1) household must be low income, 2) the home must be owned by the applicant or be in process of purchasing, 3) household must have lived in the home for at least 12 months. An application must be completed and verification of income and home ownership must be provided. Other documents may be needed, depending on the source of funding to be used. For an application or for information call the CAHRA office at 520-466-1112 or toll free 1-877-472-2472 (from long distance areas only) or write to 109 N. Sunshine Blvd., Eloy AZ, 85131.

show support for the project here in this community and through-out Arizona. Resolution Copper intended to submit the letter as part of testimony to the Senate Committee on Energy and Natu-ral Resources. Residents Henry Munoz and Roy Chavez both took the op-portunity during the Feb. 2, council meeting to express their concerns for the community and environment as a whole. Both men stated they are not opposed to the project. Munoz is concerned about the available water supply in the future citing recent water issues concerning uranium contamination in the Grand Canyon and with Flor-ence water supplies. Munoz told the Council that “you must secure your water supply.” Roy Chavez stated he was planning on going to Washington D.C. to voice concerns he believes are not being addressed prior to the Land Exchange. Chavez says that residents of Superior want

good jobs, but that the people of Arizona also want Eco-tourism through hiking trails, camping, and biking, Chavez says that Oak Flat has some of the most pris-tine land in Arizona. Richardson of Resolution Cop-per told the Council that in ad-dition the fair amount of work and jobs created, the concerns of Chavez and Munoz were be-ing addressed. Richardson said Resolution Copper understands the expectations that the project and land go through a full en-vironmental study, complying with all other water, cultural, and historical site concerns. Richard encouraged the Council to add those expectations to the letter of support being requested. Councilman Gilbert Agui-lar proposed discussion of an amendment to put language detailing the requirement of a NEPA study, addressing water supply issues, and the Economic and Eco-Tourism Impacts. No amendment was added. Ortega’s letter posed a series of questions and accusations

by a strong conductive zone as identified by a ZTEM airborne geophysical survey. Intense argillic alteration is known from rock exposures and prior drilling on the west side of the structure. The hole was pre-collared to a depth of 453 m using a reverse circulation drill. Core drilling proceeded through Tertiary volcanic rock cover. Drilling conditions were very poor, and ultimately the hole was lost at a depth of 1,231.5 m. The hole was terminated before reaching target depth and the favorable Laramide-aged rocks expected beneath the Tertiary cover rocks. The target at the Galiuro property

is a large porphyry copper +/- gold deposit hidden beneath alluvium and Tertiary volcanic cover, similar in magnitude to the nearby Resolution deposit, which is being developed by Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton. The property is situated at the intersection of the Resolution and San Manuel / Kalamazoo porphyry copper trends. Because of the Tertiary volcanic cover, other companies have previously done little exploration work. Through careful geological mapping in combination with airborne magnetic and ZTEM geophysical surveys, Millrock has identified numerous targets that may represent porphyry deposits. With the withdrawal of Vale from the project, Millrock is seeking new partners to test the remaining targets.

concerning the conducting of town business. The Superior Sun is waiting for a pending response from the Town of Superior Mayor and Town Council. Valen-zuela told the Sun that he wants to talk about the issues raised in the letter and is very willing to do so. Valenzuela says he believes that these questions and allegations go along with holding a pubic office. Valenzuela adds it is for the Mayor and Council as a whole to respond to the is-sues posed in Ortega’s letter. Valenzuela was not available for a personal interview and had no direct comments at press time. Interim Town Clerk Rita Wentzel directed questions to the Mayor and Council. Ortega’s letter raises the follow-ing questions: • Has there been any finding that recalled former Mayor Hing was directly misappropriating funds and have there been any charges filed against the former mayor following the recall election? • At the time when current Mayor Jayme Valenzuela was Vice Mayor, the current Interim Town Clerk Rita Wentzel was Town Clerk. Ortega asks why Wentzel resigned at that time; asks who is currently in charge of Town operations, The Mayor and Council or Ms.Wentzel; asks for an explanation of the current freeze on the town budget as it relates to the hiring of new town employees. • Questions how town expen-ditures are cleared and who ap-

proves those expenditures. • Concerning the Pubic Works Department, questions the hiring of former council member Veto Cervantes to oversee town streets as well as another newly hired person. Asks why Public Works Director Jed Lant cannot oversee the small staff of street workers and inmates. Questions what title Veto Cervantes position is, and how the expenditure freeze applies to these new hires. • Asks why the Public Works positions are being filled while the Police Department cannot hire a part-time dispatcher. Ques-tions why “our high price Police Chief “ is covering the dispatch shortage at times. • Asks if all the positions filled were advertised to allow unem-ployed people to apply. • Questions if the positions were filled with the mayor’s friends. The record of Council meet-ings shows that during the Feb. 2 council meeting Interim Town Clerk Rita Wentzel told Council Members that the town received 21 applicants for the posted Ad-ministrative Assistant position and that typing and 10 key test-ing would be done, and the next step was to evaluate results and then begin interviewing. Wentzel indicated that the process should be complete at the end of the week of Feb. 6 . The position will be a part time job to start out, and may become full time later on. Wentzel also noted that the position of Finance Clerk would also be posted through Feb. 17. Regardless of one’s personal opinion towards the conducting

of town business, Ortega’s letter makes one thing crystal clear. The residents of Superior have the full expectation that the cur-rent mayor and town council will deliver on their commitment to provide transparency. That means being accountable for the their actions and making good on their promise to deliver informa-tion and facts to the public out-side of a formal council meeting. The Superior Sun welcomes any information or questions the general public is willing to share. Any member of the public or official of the Town of Superior is welcome to contact the Supe-rior Sun with information and a reporter will follow up. Ques-tions can be emailed to [email protected] or a phone message left at 689-2436.
