Alexander Red Arnett Jr., 84, of Superior, passed away on March 22, 2012. Red was born in Superior on August 1, 1927. He spent many years working at Magma Copper Company,

but his passion was working as a cowboy for local ranches. A friendly man, Red was best known for his kindness and stories about growing up and living in Superior.

Editor, Superior Sun: I am back again to address our town issues. Some have questioned why I continue to question our town operations. As many of you know, I have been an opponent to the land exchange that would give Oat Flat to Resolution Copper Company. My biggest concern is that this company will jeopardize that future water needs of our community. I will not give up the fi ght to stop this operation because they do not give us any guarantees for our future water or that our surrounding environment will not be contaminated. We can see that BHP is trying to clean up the contamination that it created in the Pinal Street area, that brought high levels of arsenic into their homes. BHP claims that this was due to the

1993 fl ood of their tailings. Can you imagine it is almost 19 years later? They are now cleaning up the homes. So, the residents have lived in these conditions, not knowing the harmful effects of arsenic contamination. I have a right, as all residents of Superior, to speak if we know something is wrong. I just want straight answers! A couple of weeks ago, I had an article concerning the hiring of the new employees for the Town of Superior. As I mentioned these positions were fi lled with retired people, who were receiving full benefi ts such as pensions or Social Security. I also mentioned that these positions were not posted or advertised as required by law, so that everyone could equally apply

Editor, Superior Sun: To the citizen of Superior: If you would like more information about the toxins in our mining town, there will be an informal presentation on Friday, April 20, at noon at the Superior Senior Citizens Center. I’m looking forward to seeing you there! Sincerely,/s/ Lois Schabow

Letter to the Editor: When will the town answer questions?

for these openings. I called several of my Town Council members and asked them some very basic questions about this issue and other issues and, to my surprise, they could not answer the questions. The fi rst question was “How much do these new employees make; their salaries?” They could not answer the question. They did partly answer the question as to if these positions were advertised as is required by law. They were told, since it was an emergency, they could hire anyone they wanted, under that rule. Yet, these council members did agree that they never discussed or voted on whether the Town of Superior was in a state of emergency. I guess the Mayor forgot to tell the Council that he had declared a state of emergency. That’s what we call transparent! I did also ask another question to these council members: “Who is in charge? Who is making the day to day decisions? The Town Clerk, Rita Wentzel or the Mayor, or the Vice Mayor or even the council members?” To my amazement, they were not clear who is actually in charge. They have not been

told since they fired the Town Manager. I remember when the Town Manager became ill from the mold at Town Hall, the former Mayor declared that by law, he was in charge but stated that since the Town Council created a Deputy Town Manager’s position – that was held by the Police Chief – the duties were to be totally given to the Deputy Manager. When the new Mayor came into power, the Deputy Manager was dissolved. So, who is in charge? Are these positions part of the Mayor’s political payback program? Again, the police

department cannot fill a dispatcher position because there is a hiring freeze. I guess the Mayor or the Town Clerk did not get that memo. Mr. Veto Cervantes, the Street Director, was hired to be in charge of the street maintenance and to spend the HURF (Highway User Funds) dollars, Since there was a freeze on the spending of the budget when the new Mayor took office in November, there is now a surplus of money. We were told the Town was broke. So, now they have to spend the money before the budget comes to an end in June. Wow! Now the budget can hire new people and get paid. Instead of the monies going into actual street repair

materials, it is going into new employee salaries. Was this part of the current budget? Did the current employees ever get their pay raises that were promised to them in December? By the way, these council members that I called still have not gotten back to me. The Superior Sun also has posed these same questions but I have not seen any answers. In the last Council Meeting, the Mayor simply addressed the editorials as rumors. I do not understand his remark. Mr. Mayor, be transparent, as you promised! All I ask is answers to the questions; moreover, these are not rumors. Just justify your actions. As in your own words, be accountable.

Other questions, re: the excessive weeds at the US 60 park, the overgrown weeds at the cemetery: What happened to our full time employee at the cemetery? The last issue is, what is up with the Magma Club? The Superior Sun reported from a Council Meeting over several months ago that the building was ready to go and can be rented. It has now been told that the building is not rentable because of a sewer problem. The building should have been available for rent since November and it is now April. They knew about the problem but claim that there is no money to fix the problem even though staff bought over $4,000 worth of tables and

chairs. It is known that, even though the foreign company can move away, Resolution Copper tried to rent the facility for a safety training program but had to go to Gold Canyon to rent a facility. There goes the money out of town, with the rental loss plus the lunches that were lost over those days. It is funny that Resolution Copper gave us money to help refurbish the Magma Club and we cannot provide a place for them. It seems that we have money for political paybacks with new created positions but cannot fix a simple sewer problem. Also, we cannot even help the animal rescue group and we are back to killing animals

(more on this later). Is there one of the Mayor’s friends out there who can be a dispatcher? Maybe we can get that position filled for the Police Department. Again, “Who is in charge?” Mayor, in your own words, be transparent. All residents, start calling your Mayor and Council Members and demand answers. Maybe they will return your calls: Town Hall: 520-689-5752; Mayor ???; Lopez 520-827-4119; Peralta ???; Aguilar 520-827-9936; Tameron 520-827-0080; Tomerlin 520-827-9278; Gutierrez 520-689-2156. Despite a bitter cold wind and rain that stopped just one hour before the event began, Superior residents, local churches and the Gila County inmates came out for the Sixth Annual Community Pride Day. In just five hours, 65,000 pounds of trash was disposed of, along with more than 100 tires and a big trailer full of metal. Roll-offs and equipment were supplied by Resolution Copper Company, the Town of Superior and Orion Recycling. In five years, more than

Weather doesn’t dampen Superior’s community pride1 million pounds of trash has been collected at these clean up days. The clean up effort was followed by a pot luck lunch with door prizes donated by Anderson Rentals, Boyce Thompson Arboretum, Buckboard Cafe, Casa Denogean, Circle K, Copper Gecko,

Dalton Realty, Chuck Davison, Edwardo’s, Farmer’s Market, Jade Grill, Marilee Lasch, Steven McNeeley’s Diner, Porter’s Cafe, Save Money Market, Southwest Towing, Terry Stone, Superior Lumber, Tameron Ice and the Town of Superior. Mayor

Jayme Valenzuela was the chef for the day and Councilmen slinging trash

were Gilbert Aguilar, Hank Gutierrez and John Tameron.

Everyone left tired but feeling a great sense of Community Pride.

By Rev. Dennis Van GorpFamily Life Christian Center In Romans 10:10 we read, “For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified.” We must believe with our hearts, not just our minds, for the result to be righteousness. Many believers have a solid mental agreement and belief system about our Lord and the Holy Scriptures. They have the right knowledge, but have not followed the truth of our text. The statement has been made: “To know it in my knower.” This means to let the knowledge graduate from our mind and go deep into the heart. There is a radical difference between the two. 1 Samuel 16:7 tells us that, when considering a person for something, man looks at the outward appearance while God checks out their heart to find their real personality and motives. Yet, there are a lot of Christians who are more earthly minded than spiritually or heavenly minded. Colossians 3 says to seek the things of God and to set our minds on things above. When we do so, we have great joy and expectations in our life. We have hope and victory over the situations we encounter. With Jesus Christ in control, we are winners, not losers! Enjoy the victory!

By Mila Lira The 2012 Superior Little League season got off to a good start five weeks ago with the early start of the t-ball season. League officials had decided to start the t-ball season in advance of the older leagues to allow each team enough time to play the required games. With 17 teams in the league this season it was necessary to start the season early. On Monday, April 16, while the T-Ballers were celebrating the end of

their season, the boys and girls Minor, Majors and Junior League Baseball and Softball Teams were celebrating their opening day. The celebrations began with the annual Little League opening day parade on Main St. This year the grand marshals for the parade were the 2011 9 &10 year old all stars who won the Little League District Championship last year. Also recognized as grand marshals were the girls softball all stars who won the Little League

Superior Little League season in full swing

District Championship. Following the parade the opening day ceremony began at the field with all the teams being announced and the T-Ballers receiving their end of season awards. The first game of the season was a boys Major League game with the Diamond Backs playing the Yankees. Little League games will continue to be played Monday through Friday through June 15, 2012. Games are played at 5:30 and 7:30 each night. Games will not be held on April 25, May 8 and 9 or the week of graduation, May 21-28. Superior Little League will also be playing teams from Apache Junction, Florence and Globe both here in Superior and away. Each day during the season the Little League needs at least eight to 15 volunteers. From umpires, pitch counters, announcers and concession workers there is always a task for everyone. For more information on the Superior Little League or to volunteer please contact Armida Denogean at 480-215-3116.

Macular Degeneration?

Compiled by Mila Lira At press time, Copper prices closed at $3.61 a pound. This reflected a two-cent decrease. This week the Florence Copper Project and ASU released their economic study and Rosemont Copper announced that they received the needed Aquifer Protection Permit; it was issued to Augusta Resources from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.Curis – Florence Copper Project Arizona State University (ASU) released a comprehensive socioeconomic study of Florence Copper. Florence Copper Project: Economic Impact Study details an impressive case of lasting economic value, including new job creation, wage increases and new private-sector business growth and investment in Arizona. The study reported overwhelmingly positive conclusions that Florence Copper would bring over $2.2 billion in new economic activity to Arizona over the next 28 years. “The ASU Economic Impact Study is a sophisticated, independent third party review of the overall economic, employment, business and public benefits to be generated by Florence Copper,” said Michael McPhie, president of Curis Resources. “It confirms that Florence Copper will make a profound near-term and sustained contribution to the economic well-being of Pinal County and the state of Arizona through the creation of stable, well-paid jobs, hundreds of millions of dollars in supply and service contracts for local businesses and

contributions to governments at the local, county and state levels.” Commissioned to gather and analyze data from official sources and draw conclusions, ASU’s prestigious L. William Seidman Research Institute studied potential impacts of Florence Copper, an environmentally sound and socially responsible in-situ copper recovery operation in Florence, Ariz. Top economic experts – Dennis Hoffman, PhD; Lee McPheters, PhD; and Tom Rex, MBA –utilized data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the state of Arizona, Pinal County and other official sources to compile the 129-page study. Conclusions in the ASU Economic Impact Study include: • Florence Copper will bring the state roughly $2.2 billion with $1.1 billion of that to stay within Pinal County. • The project will create and support an annual average of 681 Arizona jobs over the duration of the three phases of development activity. • New jobs created are expected to support head-of-household wages, with an industry average of 44 percent more than other Arizona industry jobs. • Two out of three jobs can be sourced from workers in Pinal County. • Personal income for Pinal County residents will rise by $709 million. • Arizona governments will collect approximately $325 million in taxes and royalties. The study also looks at the ripple effect Florence Copper will have on Pinal County, predicting the project has

Mining Reportmore potential than any other economic factors to spur an economic recovery in the near term. New private-sector businesses are also expected to increase once copper operations begin. With the current unemployment rate of 20.3 percent recently reported for the Town of Florence and 9.5 percent for Pinal County, Florence Copper represents an extraordinary opportunity to provide lasting benefits to the people of the community. “Based on the analysis, Florence Copper could potentially create hundreds of high wage jobs, and generate millions in annual revenues for local and state governments and businesses” said Dr. Hoffman. “Florence Copper represents a regional economic development opportunity with real, near term benefits.” The full study is available at http://www.florencecopperproject.com/s/Reports.asp and details the historical background, the economy of Florence and comparison areas, socioeconomic overview, baseline growth, economic and fiscal impact, and workforce analysis.Rosemont Copper Augusta Resource Corporation announced that the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (“ADEQ”) has issued the Aquifer Protection Permit (“APP”) for its Rosemont

Copper project (“Rosemont”). The APP establishes the operating standards and controls to ensure the protection of ground water and is effective for the life of the mine. Rosemont has now received six major permits required to commence construction. Other major permits include the Air Quality Permit and the Clean Water Act Section 404 Permit, which the Company expects to receive later in the second quarter or in the third quarter of 2012 as well as the Record of Decision (“ROD”) on the Plan of Operations from the U.S. Forest Service (“USFS”). Rod Pace, Augusta’s Chief Operating Officer, commented, “Obtaining the Aquifer Protection Permit for Rosemont is a major permitting milestone that clearly shows that our project stands up to thorough and intense scrutiny. This achievement puts us one major step closer to completing the permitting process and starting construction on this 21st Century mining project that will create 2,900 new jobs in Arizona and have annual economic impact of over $1 billion to the U.S. economy.” The USFS also provided a Rosemont Copper Project update stating that over 25,000 comments were submitted on the draft Environmental Impact Statement (“EIS”)

and all substantive comments have been identified, coded and organized. The USFS is now drafting a document responding to the comments. The responses will also be reflected in the final EIS and appended to the document. Final impact mitigations are

currently being determined according to Federal and State guidelines and will be included in the EIS. The Company has no change to its previous guidance with respect to the issuance of the final EIS and ROD from the USFS.
