By Mila Besich Lira The Superior Fire Department responded on Friday evening to a structure fire on Sunset Drive. Upon arrival to the scene the structure, a late model mobile home was 15 percent engulfed in

flames. SFD was able to contain the fire to one room, however the structure does have extensive smoke damage. Fire teams used two fire engines, a tender and a command unit to fight the blaze along with

assistance from the Queen Valley Volunteer Fire Department. One person was treated on scene for smoke inhalation but refused to be transported for further evaluation. The cause of the fire appears to be an accident.

According to state law, police may arrest suspected offenders by two methods. The suspect may be physically taken into the department and booked into jail, or the arresting officer may write a citation and release the suspect to appear in court later. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Only criminal citations are listed. All damage amounts are estimates. Items are given to The Superior Sun by the Superior Police Department and reflect information available at the time the

report is compiled. The Superior Police Department has issued a correction to their report published in the Jan. 2, 2013 issue of the Superior Sun. The arrest listed for Angela Gomez was a typographical error and should have read: Angelo Gomez, 49, arrested: Charges of misconduct involving weapons, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, aggravated assault on a police officer, DV assault, DV threatening-intimidating and DV disorderly conduct. The Superior Police Department apologizes for

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu and members of the PCSO Criminal Investigations Bureau will be on hand Thursday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. at the Queen Valley Community Center

By Mila Besich-Lira Last week, Copper Area News reported that State Representative TJ Shope had dropped a memorial to encourage the US Congress to pass a land exchange bill for the Resolution Copper project. At press time, LD-8 Senator Barbara McGuire had not been contacted to support the bill introduced by Shope. Since she was not a sponsor, her name was not included as a supporter of the bill via the legislature’s website. “I am 100 percent in support of Resolution Copper,” McGuire said in a telephone interview, “had I been asked to sign onto the bill I would have.” McGuire further explained that the memorial dropped by Shope “is like sending

Congress a post card.” McGuire explained that she is also planning to work with the Arizona Congressional delegation to assist with supporting the land exchange. At press time, a new land exchange bill has not been introduced into Congress. Resolution officials are expected to make decisions on when a new

land exchange bill will be introduced in the coming weeks.

FLORENCE – Supervisor Pete Rios and the Pinal County Pub-lic Works Department are re-minding residents to break down their cardboard boxes when they take them to a county recy-cling bin. “Constituents in Kearny re-

cently reported seeing a number of large cardboard boxes dis-carded around the recycling bins and in the surrounding area,” Supervisor Rios said. “It’s un-sightly and unacceptable. Please flatten your cardboard boxes and place them inside the bin. This allows more recycling material to fit in there.” Rios said that the bins are placed there as a courtesy to lo-cal residents to encourage them to recycle instead of dumping them in landfills. “The last thing we want to see is for our recycling bins to be-come an eyesore. We don’t want continuing complaints from residents and merchants, to force removal of the bins,” he added.

Master Gardeners’ Saturday Horticulture Workshops start Feb. 2rolling: Feb. 2 they’ll debut a once-a-month series of desert horticulture classes at the Arboretum that are free to BTA annual members, and at no additional charge to our non-member visitors. No advance sign-up required, either! Feb 2 brings an ‘Australian Plant Walkabout’ tour of Down Under plants with information about how wattle, mallee and emu can be used in Arizona gardens. March 2 the topic is: ‘Right Plant, Right Place’ and the MGs will share their secrets of successful desert gardening and discuss choosing the right plant for the right place. Got shade? Sun? Sandy soil? Caliche? You’ll learn how picking the right plants and

giving forethought to placement can solve the most common gardening problems. April 6 brings ‘Herbs in your Garden’ and a presentation about medicinal and culinary use

of herbs. Learn more with a visit to ag.arizona.edu/bta; connect with staff, volunteer tourguides and more than 3,300 fans at facebook.com/boycethompsonarboretum.

If you purchased an Autumn Sage or a Salvia Clevelandii from Boyce Thompson Arboretum in the past few years, chances are the seedling was propagated, potted and lovingly nurtured by the dedicated crew of green-thumbed volunteers from the Superstition Mountain Master Gardeners. You’ve probably met Carol, Elane, Genny or Chuck and Jeanne Ann when they help out at the Spring/Fall plant sales, too: answering questions and offering garden advice. By Mila Besich-Lira For the past four years, the Superior Chamber of Commerce Home Tour weekend was met with sunny skies, and moderate temperatures, the type of weather most call Chamber of Commerce weather. This year, event organizers were met with the logistics of managing some very wet weather. Those logistics were put into place and the event ran as successfully as it normally does on a sunny January weekend. The Magma Club was filled with lots of antiques, the art show was moved into the diner on Main Street and all of the homes on the tour were open and ready to greet visitors to their homes. If anything, the rain provided visitors the opportunity to see Superior under the clouds, and hear the roar of Queen Creek as it runs through the town. Like most things in life, it is best not to judge a book by its cover. On the tour this year were six very unique homes. If you saw them from the outside you would think that they were just common homes, but inside the homes had a personality all of their own. One of the homes on the tour used mostly recycled construction materials and also had some elements that were used in major motion pictures. One home had a music room complete with a disco ball. This home also had a tropical oasis with a turtle pond, koi pond and aviary. Some of the homes were small, others were large. The Copper Cottages, once known as the Honeymoon Cottages, were on the tour this year. This one-bedroom home had a

unique bathroom that was decorated with industrial materials. One thing each of the homes featured was the use of colors and textures. Every home on the tour had bright walls, art and murals decorating them. This year a home in the Highlands was featured and from the landscaping to the interior, home guests had a taste of Tuscany. One of Superior’s most unique homes, the home of Marilee Lasch was also on the tour again this year. The three-story home was recently featured on the Arizona Highways television show. The home features a wrap-around porch with breathtaking views of Superior and a labyrinth. Event organizers explained that without the support of their volunteers, the event would not be a success. Over 50 volunteers helped with being hosts at the homes to collecting signs and working at the ticket table including students from the Catholic Youth Ministry. At press time, the Superior Chamber of Commerce reported that they sold 650 tickets to the event. The Superior Chamber of Commerce Home Tour is held the last weekend of January every year. For more information about the Chamber or the event please contact the chamber at 520-689-0200 or SuperiorArizonaChamber.org.

By Rev. Dennis Van Gorp Family Life Christian Center In Luke 15:11-32, we find the story of a restless young man who asked his dad for his portion of the inheritance and then moved far away from home. Enjoying his new found freedom, he began to waste his money on friends, parties and the enticements of life. Without a responsible

lifestyle, his money was soon gone and so were his friends. He finally found work on a local farm, feeding the hogs. Life went downhill so fast that he soon discovered the slop the animals were eating was beginning to look good and edible. He knew he was in trouble. He soon realized that his home life had been way better than his current

situation. When he had decided that enough was enough, he knew it was time to go back home. Whatever punishment he would receive would be much better than his current life style. He father was expecting that someday he would again see his long lost son. From a hill top, he saw him walking along the road and ran to meet him. He brought him into the house and gave him new clothes to wear. He ordered a feast of celebration to be prepared in his honor. In this narrative, the father represents God and the son, you and I. We sometimes walk away from God and our place of comfort and security to experience life as we desire it to be. When we realize the hurt and harm we have done, not only to ourselves, but also to our family, our loving Father God is waiting to welcome us back home. It doesn’t matter where we’ve been or what we’ve been doing. Our Lord loves us so much that He welcomes us back. He is the God of second chances, twentieth chances and fiftieth chances. He carefully cleans and heals our wounds and gives us a new set of clothes. He totally forgives us, wiping away all of our tears and frustrations. He removes the wrongs we have committed and restores us to our place in the family. If you have wandered away from God, tell Him you are sorry and He will lovingly welcome you back. Ask Him to help you get your life back under His control. He loves you very much and always will. Just promise Him one thing: you enjoy His love and are done with that old lifestyle, with no plans to go back to it. Welcome home!

Court for the Southern District of Texas, Corpus Christi Division. But in May of 2008, Sterlite Industries decided to back out of the purchase, claiming that it was due to the economic downturn and the declining cost of copper. Asarco successfully sued Sterlite over the breach of the purchase agreement. Federal Judge Richard S. Schmidt found that had Sterlite not breached the purchase in 2008 the reorganization of ASARCO could have been complete by March of 2009. Because of the breach, it took until November of 2009 for the bankruptcy court to approve Asarco’s purchase by Grupo Mexico. Judge Schmidt also found that there were no provisions in the purchase agreement to allow Sterlite to back out of the purchase due to declining global economics or copper prices. He awarded Asarco $132.8 million in damages, less a $50 million letter

of credit that Asarco was authorized in 2009 to draw down. Sterlite Industries will be heading back to court to fend off another lawsuit stemming from the breach. Upon backing out of the agreement the company did not pay their legal fees to Harkins Cunningham LLP. On Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, Harkins Cunningham LLP filed a breach of contract suit against Sterlite. Harkins claims that Sterlite owes the firm $80,000 for services rendered over a 30-day period while the company was planning on acquiring ASARCO for $2.6 billion. Harkins claims that Sterlite breached their written agreement. The law firm has attempted to collect payment from Sterlite for the services rendered for three years. They are seeking payment of legal fees, plus prejudgment interest, costs and other expenses.Story compiled from an article posted online at Law360.com.

By Chase KampCopper Area News The new five-member Pinal County Board of Supervisors faced its first controversial piece of business on Jan. 9, a proposal by Sheriff Paul Babeu to move 16 merit employees to at-will status, and voted to hold on a vote until next month.

The proposal would allow the Sheriff to increase his authority over a number of lieutenants and directors from patrol and the jail, who would not be able to appeal any disciplinary actions or firings. These employees would not covered by a written contract or bargaining agreement

and the employment could be ended at any time by either the employee or the employer, with or without cause. PCSO commander Jeffrey Karns retired on Jan. 1 and e-mailed a letter addressed to Babeu to all PCSO staff claiming he would be terminated if Babeu’s proposal was approved. Karns was set to lose more than $14,000 in salary after the at-will shift, whereas lieutenants in patrol and investigations would get a salary increase out of a jail-improvement fund. In his email, Karns said the proposal would ruin morale and allow Babeu to appoint political allies. Babeu told the Board his proposal would improve performance and was within his purview as a department head. The Board unanimously voted to table the item until next month. Supervisor Todd House said he received correspondence both for and against the measure and requested more time to review the proposal. The vote was the fi rst for new District 2 Supervisor Cheryl Chase. Chase served three terms as a state legislator from 2000 to 2006 for then LD 23, which includes most of the Copper Corridor, and then began work as a Community Relations Administrator for Sheriff Paul Babeu at PCSO. It was a job that took her to every corner of Pinal County working with veterans, women’s organizations and domestic violence advocacy groups. In the spring of 2012, then-candidate for Sheriff Steve Henry approached Chase about a possible run for Supervisor on the new fi ve-member board. “I was very happy working in the Sheriff’s Offi ce,”

Chase said. “I can say I had a possible future political run in the back of my mind, but it wasn’t a top goal. I am very pleased that the voters believed in me to elect me as their supervisor.” Chase says she is looking ahead to the myriad of matters that will come before the board in the upcoming months. The challenges, the new supervisor said, will be “interesting and somewhat daunting.” “There are of course a lot of concerns related to growth and public safety,”

the District 2 Supervisor said. “I have no doubt I will be a strong voice for all fi rst responders. I understand the issues they face on a day-to-day basis.” One of the subjects that is key to her district is the expansion of Hunt Highway. “I am concerned about that road,” Chase said. “I see it as a major safety issue for everyone in the area. This is a priority for me. It seems that every time we have a signifi cant rain, the road becomes fl ooded. I would like to address that very soon.”

By Chase KampSuperior Sun The Superior Town Council approved the hiring of K. Kane Graves to serve as both town manager and town attorney at its meeting on Jan. 17. The move comes after the dismissal of former town attorneys Chris Wencker and Chad Niven, who had served their roles for about two years. Graves previously worked a similar dual role for the City of Globe, serving as the town manager and attorney for the Gila County city. The hiring of Graves also shifted the title of Rita Wentzel, who was appointed interim town manager in early 2012. Wentzel will now be serving as finance director/town clerk. Mayor Jayme Valenzuela said the council made a decision that he hopes will straighten the town’s fiscal ship. “Hopefully things will move forward,” he said. “We had a lot of
