By Chase KampSuperior Sun A 13-year-old student at Superior Junior/Senior High was taken in for questioning by police on Nov. 2, 2012, for allegedly giving prescription stimulants to five other students, who ingested them while at school. Some of the students complained of breathing and anxiety problems, prompting school officials to call paramedics, said Superintendent Pete Guzman. The students were transported to Mountain Vista Hospital for precautionary observation. “We have policies

concerning drugs and those will be looked at, but my main concern today was the health and safety of the students,” Guzman said. “Disciplinary action will take place, but not until I complete my investigation.” The junior high dance scheduled for Friday, Nov. 2 was cancelled for safety reasons, Guzman said, and will be rescheduled. Superior Police Chief Lou Digirilamo said the student is suspected of bringing to school six tablets of methylphenidate, a Ritalin-type stimulant used to treat attention-deficit disorders.

Junior high student caught giving Ritalin-type drug to friendsDigirilamo said police suspect the student took one of the tablets and gave the rest away to five other

students. Digirilamo said he did not recall any past outstanding incidents

of prescription drug use among junior high students. Guzman said the schools

are to be made aware of medications prescribed to students and are often dispensed by nurses.

FLORENCE, Ariz. – Non-attorney members are being sought to serve on the Pinal County Commission for Trial Court Appointments. There are several important changes coming to Pinal County in 2013. There will be a five-member Board of Supervisors, a variety of new office holders and now Superior Court judges will be chosen by the

Governor and not through direct elections in the past. According to the Arizona Constitution, a county with a population of 250,000 or more in the latest census shall move to merit selection of Superior Court judges. In the 2010 census, Pinal County’s official population was 375,770. In September, the Board of Supervisors appointed seven residents from each

of their respective districts (including the upcoming Districts 4 and 5) to sit as the Pinal County Commission of Trial Court Appointments Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee is currently seeking applications from non-attorneys to serve on the Pinal County Commission of Trial Court Appointments.

In accordance with the Arizona Constitution, Article VI, Section 41, non-attorney members must have resided in the state for at least five years and must have resided in the supervisorial district from which appointed for at least one year before being nominated (supervisorial districts are available at http://goo.gl/VzdW2).

They cannot be a judge, a retired judge or a lawyer admitted to practice before the Arizona Supreme Court and they cannot hold any governmental office, elective or appointed, for profit (i.e. salary, commission, etc.) (An appointee can be a governmental employee.) The nominating committee will select candidates to recommend

to the Governor. Applications, along with the Committee’s recommendation for appointment, will be forwarded to the Governor who shall make appointments subject to confirmation by the Arizona Senate. Interested non-attorneys are encouraged to send a letter and résumé to

By Mila Besich-Lira Yesterday evening, KVOA, the NBC affiliate from Tucson, reported that the Arizona Department of Safety (DPS) had recovered $2,000,000.00 of copper that was stolen from the ASARCO mine in Hayden. The initial discovery of the stolen copper was found on Sept. 27 at a ranch near Tangerine Road in Marana. The report explained that at least 12 people could be indicted in this case and will be facing up to 40 counts. The DPS investigation led them to Upland California and to a scrap metal dealer

who has connections to a Chinese broker. The Arizona copper was put into sea containers and began its journey to China on the ship “Franesca.” Jim Oien is the DPS officer who has been investigating this crime, in his interview with KVOA Oien said two weeks ago, the “Francesca” was loaded with three containers of stolen copper. It sailed to Hong Kong where Customs and Border Protection agents managed to get the ship returned with the containers. In total 500 830-pound anodes of copper were recovered in the ship.

“The Arizona copper that was mined in Arizona by Arizona workers ends up in the hands of the Chinese, and it’s stolen,” explained Oien. ASARCO originally suspected the copper thefts and began an internal investigation prior to alerting the authorities. The company has been working with law enforcement and there is a $50,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction. If you have information you are urged to call 88-CRIME or 9-1-1. Copper Area News will release more details as they become available.

By Mila Besich Lira If you have never stopped in at Farmers Market on US 60 then you have been missing out. The store has been a Superior favorite for over a decade but over the past year, the store underwent a $150,000 remodel and has much more to offer. The menu has been expanded as well as their merchandise selection. You will find new stainless steel equipment, a fresh paint job and new shelving. The store offers many choices of quick and fast foods such as Chester’s Chicken, homemade pizza, sub sandwiches, and breakfast burros plus many more items. The outdoor smoker is where their BBQ chicken and ribs are cooked. Full meals can be ordered to include side dishes such as mashed potatoes and gravy, corn and macaroni and cheese. All of the menu items are available as take-out orders or you can dine at their counter. Farmers Market also can also provide catering and service for large events with proper notice. All of the food prepared at Farmers Market is fresh, it is not prepackaged. The pizza sauce and dough is prepared daily and it a favorite menu item for many youngsters. If you are in a pinch and need other grocery or household items the store has a variety of cleaning supplies, canned goods and also has fresh produce available. They also have a wide selection of beers and wines that you won’t find at other local merchants, the coolers are also packed with a variety of iced teas, soda and juices. A new cappuccino machine has been installed

Farmers Market: Good Stuff FASTand customers can choose from a delightful selection of flavored coffees. The new and improved Farmers Market has been open since March. If you have not had a chance

at 4 a.m. and is open until 10 p.m. Farmers Market is a member of the Superior Chamber of Commerce and also proudly supports many community events and school sports.

College today means a lot more than just pursuing a four-year degree at a university. Being “college ready” means being prepared for any postsecondary experience, including study at two-year and four-year institutions leading to a postsecondary credential (i.e. a certifi cate, license, Associate’s and Bachelor’s degree). In today’s economy, a career is not just a job. A career provides a family-sustaining

wage and pathways to advancement. According to the Center on Education and the Workforce about 40 years ago, 72 percent of US jobs were held by individuals with a high school degree or less. By 2018, only 38 percent of jobs will be available to individuals without some education and training after high school. According to the Brookings Institution nearly one-half of all job openings in the

Life Restoration Center recently went crusading through the streets of Superior. Young people from as far as California and Phoenix attended the crusade to help make a difference in Superior. “Yes God’s church Is making a difference!” said Pastor John Vasquez. The crusade through the streets of Superior took the church volunteers “into the trenches, in the barrios in the troubled neighborhoods, this is where The Lord desires His Church to be! We are on a mission our desire is to declare this Gospel to every nation, City and Town.” proclaimed Pastor Vasquez of the Life Restoration Center of the Apostolic Assembly Church in Superior This is an annual event for the church. Members and volunteers were carrying posters and urging everyone to attend their live worship services that weekend. The group was promoting “Project Restoration” a program that the congregation believes that God can restore man’s state of mind. “Man today is separated from God because of sin. So many families fi nd themselves with broken marriages, broken hearts, drugs, alcohol problems, and they turn to gangs,

Project Restoration underway at Superior churchtrying to fi nd a name for themselves. Society says put them in prison, put in jail, put them away, but in reality we forget that they have to come back home,

and most of the time they come back, they come back out worse,” said Pastor Vasquez. Their hope is that the ongoing ministry and

crusading will help to lead people to Christ who will

reform their lives; they are hoping to see a great result

of many lives changed and restored.

Tempe, and Gilbert Evora, 30, Mesa, with first degree murder. They also charged Javier Santos, 34, Apache Junction, and Joshua McGuire, 31, Kearny, with first degree hindering and abandonment or concealment of a dead body. According to PCSO Public Information Officer Tim Gaffney, homicide detectives followed up on every lead which they received related to this case. The investigation, he said, revealed the motive in the case was apparently related to a drug debt. Allegedly, Goga and Evora devised a plan to kill the victim. Detectives said Goga drove the victim to a residence in the 200 block of Hartford Street

in Kearny where Evora was waiting inside with a baseball bat. Once inside, the victim was allegedly beaten with the bat by Evora and kicked by Goga until he died from his injuries. The victim was then wrapped in plastic and placed in the toolbox. Detectives said at this point Santos and McGuire agreed to take the toolbox which contained the body to the remote desert area near Kearny and bury it. It is estimated the victim was murdered and buried sometime between March and November of 2009. Goga, Evora, Santos and McGuire are currently in custody. Homicide detectives are still working to try and determine the identity of the victim. “Homicide detectives never gave up on this case

and were determined to find out who committed this gruesome murder,” said Sheriff Paul Babeu. “Our detectives started with only physical evidence on this case and after continuously working it four people are in custody and will remain there for years to come.”
