ell it was certainly a windy Straw Bear weekend, but how fortunate we were that it didn’t rain! I’m very lucky to live in the centre of Whittlesey, and as the clock got closer to 10:30, I could hear the excitement of the town getting ready to welcome the bear! And it did not disappoint. Dancers and muscians lined the Market Square, and hoards of people cheered them on. That wonderfully familiar sound of the bear’s parade took me back to my own childhood, and the fond memories of following the bear, picking up stray bits of corn and collecting that year;s badge. Nothing much has changed, thankfully, except this year we were collecting Dylan’s second badge (though he refused to have it pinned to his coat!). It was a wonderful weekend. Some of you might have been nursing sore heads on Sunday morning, but we were out early for a walk to the park, and we spotted groups of Street Pride members, picking up the previous day’s litter. By the time we came home, there wasn’t a sign that the Straw Bear had occurred. They did a fantastic job of cleaning our streets and roads, and they deserve a huge thank you. It’s wonderful knowing we have such a hardworking, and dedicated group of people who love our small town enough to give up a couple of hours in the day to keep it tidy. Thank you! I can’t end this month’s column without saying another truly special thank you to one of our longest standing contributor’s to the magazine: Geoff Oldfield. Through thick and thin, Geoff has been supplying history pages for Discovering Whittlesea for years. This month’s article, not only marks his 80th contribution to the magazine, but sadly also his last. Geoff will be retiring from the ‘Pages in history’ column. The whole of the Discovering team would like to take this opportunity to thank Geoff for his commitment and hardwork in producing 80 articles which have taught us about the wonderful rich history of Whittlesey. I do hope you enjoy our February issue, and we will see you next month!

At just three-and-a-half years old, Effie was diagnosed with Late Infantile Batten disease, and whilst she can no longer walk, both she and her family have refused to give up. Batten disease is an inherited disorder of the nervous system that typically begins in childhood. Early symptoms of this disorder usually appear between the ages of 5 and 10 years, when parents or physicians may notice a previously normal child has begun to develop vision problems or seizures. In some cases the early signs are subtle, taking the form of personality and behavior changes, slow learning, clumsiness, or stumbling. Whilst incurable, a drug is currently being researched which may help to slow the disease, or even cure it, but it will only be available for sufferers in the early stages. Early diagnosis is therefore crucial. The family are now raising funds by collecting used postage stamps, which will then be recycled and the funds subsequently used to research the potential new cure for the fatal brain disease that Effie has. He has been a self-employed artist since 1987, mainly painting in watercol-our and building paper sculptures. WHITTLESEY LADYSMITH W.I.

A belated Happy New Year to you all from the Whittlesey in Bloom team. Since our last article lots of bulb planting has taken place; an aptly named crocus – Remembrance – together with some tete a tete daffodils have been planted in the Garden of Rest and also in pots in the Cemetery; hopefully they will bloom this Spring along with more bluebells and snowdrops along the Manor river embankment. The Pound has been closed for maintenance works over the past month and is due to be re-opened on 15 February; it will then be open once again on a daily basis. We have applied to the Glassmoor Wind Turbine fund for a grant to have an Interpretation Board installed within The Pound which will contain the history of The Pound together with some more up to date details. A Brownie group has shown interest in planting a specific rose within The Pound and this has been agreed. The Friends of the Cemetery Grand Christmas draw raised a fantastic £600.36; this will go a long way towards the purchase and installation of an additional seat in the Cemetery. There were 45 prizes very generously donated by businesses and individuals – a list of the winning numbers has been put on notice boards throughout the Town. I would like to thank everyone that provided prizes and bought tickets to make this such a success. We are actively looking for the balance of £200 towards the estimated total cost of £800. When the seat is installed there will also be a hard standing area provided for wheelchair users. Many compliments have been received about how neat and tidy the Cemetery is looking, this is all down to a small, very

keen band of volunteers. If you would like to help at the Cemetery please get in touch with me, and arrangements can be made for you to assist as and when you can. The Town Council has purchased some new planters for the Town Centre which will be planted and maintained by Whittlesey in Bloom; these will be erected on the railings outside of the Nat West Bank and the Nationwide Building Society. Fenland District Council has also asked the In Bloom group to take over the planting and maintenance of the tiered planters usually sited on the paved area adjacent to the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society and on the garden area near to the Methodist/United Reform Church on the A605, which we have agreed to do. The summer project for the Manor entrance Flower beds is currently being discussed and we hope to come up with something that will be as significant and colourful as previous years.Park Lane School has already been in contact and is keen to work with us in 2015; it is lovely to see such enthusiasm from the youngsters. Those of us that form the Whittlesey in Bloom group are dedicated volunteers but more bodies are needed along with the finance to ensure that we can continue. Thank you for your support.

The competition winners for 2014 were announced at the AGM last month and Sandra Green was first and presented with the cup, Karen Mucklin was second and Eve Dexter third. Liz Phillips will remain President, Sandra Green -Secretary, and Janet Foreman - Treasurer with committee members also as last year. After the business was completed, members welcomed Deborah Slator from Defibrillators For All who demonstrated how to use the equipment and why they are so vital in helping to save lives. We learned that in this area the problem of railway crossing gates being closed for 25 minutes in every hour can greatly increase the time it takes for an ambulance to arrive.

Having defibrillators installed in public places means anyone can help and survival rates are as high as 75% when defibrillation is delivered promptly. Eight machines are already installed in the area with two more waiting to go out and plans for even more. The evening was rounded off by the committee serving delicious homemade soup, which was much enjoyed on a cold winter evening. The next meeting will be on Tuesday 10th February at 7.30pm when Tara Jolliffe from The Giant Cookie Company will be showing members how to produce a stunning treat. On the subject of treats, members will be going to the Sue Ryder Cafe in Stanground on Friday 6th February for afternoon tea. New members and guests are welcome - information Sue 01733 205927.

Another year has passed and we have witnessed the success of the 36th Straw Bear Festival, an event that continues to raise the profile of Whittlesey and it was particularly enjoyable for Ann and I to be asked to launch the Straw Bear parade from the Manor Leisure Centre on the Saturday morning and for us to participate in the excellent Plough Service at a well attended St Andrews Church on the Sunday afternoon. Another delightful aspect of the three day Straw Bear Festival is to meet newcomers to the town who have travelled great distances to participate in the celebrations. During our walk around the town on the Saturday for instance we conversed with people from Norwich, Bedford and Plymouth all of whom were attending the Festival for the first time and were thoroughly enjoying their visits.

It was again heartening to see the local traders, pubs, eating houses and organisations maximising the commercial aspect of the festival. St Mary’s church received many visitors, the library and museum were frequented in good numbers, St Andrews Church Hall did a roaring trade at lunchtime in particular and I trust a great time was enjoyed by all in true community spirit.

My thanks for the festival must first of all go to the hard working members of the Straw Bear Festival Committee but also I am most grateful for all the efforts of the stewards and marshals, the local police and St John’s Ambulance members who hopefully were not overworked and not least Street Pride for the clear up operation - well done to all!!

The privileges of being Mayor are many and one of these occurred in the middle of Straw Bear Saturday when during that afternoon Ann and I along with many other civic heads and local dignitaries were invited to attend a reception held by the High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire, Mrs Linda Fairbrother, in the Great Hall of Trinity College, Cambridge. We of course took every opportunity of further publicising Whittlesey’s Straw Bear event which I can assure you was a considerable talking point during the two hours or so that we were in attendance.

My further thanks go out to all the generous citizens of Whittlesey who donated food items over the Christmas period to the newly formed Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid project either by attending our two trolley donation sessions

in Heron Foods in High Causeway and Keshco in Broad Street or by bringing items along to the churches in the town and the New Road Childrens Centre. I can honestly say that this made a big difference to certain families over Christmas and my thanks go out to all concerned. The project itself is now gaining momentum not just as a food bank but in the long term assisting families in Whittlesey through crisis and enabling them to regain their independence.

I know that some of you have concerns over the re-siting of the bus stop in Grosvenor Road which is an essential part of freeing up the Buttercross and Market Square from traffic. This current activity is the culmination of years of planning and negotiation with Cambridgeshire County Council and Fenland District Council to enhance the centre piece of our town for the further enjoyment of our citizens and the moving of the bus stops is an integral part of that operation. To facilitate this and to effectively increase the parking spaces in Eastgate the derelict toilet block has been demolished and two bus lanes will be created in Grosvenor Road itself with every consideration being given to public safety and access. The budget allocated for this project can only be used for this sole purpose and cannot be transferred to other projects that have been mentioned, such as improvements to the B1040. I sincerely hope that in the months to come as the work is completed you will all appreciate the thought process behind the scheme and find greater freedom of movement in the centre of Whittlesey.

Finally, as you may have seen in the local press, following the collapse of plans by Tesco to open superstores in Whittlesey and Chatteris I have been in further communication with senior executives at Sainsbury confirming the continued support of Whittlesey Town Council to the proposed supermarket and country park schemes in Eastrea Road. Revised planning applications are at this very moment before Fenland District Council for their approval. Till next time…….

he benefit of writing these articles is when people comment on what has been written. For instance, a lady came up to me in the Building Society and said “I enjoyed reading your article on Horsey Toll aerodrome but we did not repair Spitfires, they had metal cladding. We only repaired Hurricanes which had canvas covering and I still have my scissors!” Just a few weeks ago Peter Wortley contacted me and gave me two photographs of one of the Whittlesea fire engines in Whittlesea, Australia. He was there when the fires raged in 2009 and my account revived memories for him. It’s a small world. I was thinking of writing an article on the towns in South Africa founded by Sir Harry Smith. I was prompted by having an envelope sent to England with the postmark ‘Aliwal North’ and dated 1919. I mentioned this to my neighbour, Sarah Patterson who said her husband Paul had an Aunt in Aliwal North, Sister Imelda who was a nun and worked there in an orphanage. Sarah promptly rang her and I said it would be nice to have an envelope dated 2014 with an Aliwal North postmark. She explained that the town no longer had a post office and letters were now franked in Bloemfontein, so that was that. I did the article anyway, and several weeks later to my surprise I received an email from Haans Van De Berg who was the curator of Aliwal North museum. He was going to send me their information on Sir Harry Smith if I would reciprocate.

Well we have an enormous amount of information on view, portraits in the town hall, the sculpture in St. Mary’s Church, the tomb in the cemetery, the ‘Hero of Aliwal’ public house in Church Street and of course the Sir Harry Smith school. These had to be photographed and printed with an explanation as to where they were. This has involved me with a lot of work, punctuated by illness and I am only just about ready to send a package. The package has duly arrived from Aliwal North containing photographs of Smith Street and Juana Square. Surprise, surprise the story has come full circle for there at the bottom of the parcel was an envelope containing a South Africa stamp and postmarked ‘Aliwal North 20-7-2014! ’

Streetpride members, family and friends enjoyed an end of year social night when two of their valued sponsors NISA and VESUVIO provided abuffet for the evening. A quiz was held thanks to Andrew Overton, and a good night was had byeveryone. Our first litter pick of 2015 on New Years day had an attendance of 19 hardy Whittlesey Streetpride members, plus one new member, who between them collected 21 bags of rubbish. The litter pick following the Straw Bear festival achieved the removal of 22 bags of rubbish and was attended by 19 members, and again we had another new recruit join us. It is fair to say that on both occasions the the town had seen a great contribution by the Fenland Streetscene team, but as usual the areas that are not obviously visible is where most of our rubbish is found. This time of year although quieter it is a good time to remove rubbish from the verges as the undergrowth has died back exposing a lot of buried rubbish. We continue to remove large amounts of rubbish from the Kings Delph A605 area near the layby, this being our most active area which we could attend every two weeks and still find rubbish to remove. Later this year we intend to embark on a wildflower campaign around Whittlesey similar to the poppy seed planting of last year. If you are interested in

NOVA Club present ChequeThe Nova Club's chosen charity over the past year has been the Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice. Mandy Smith, Nova Club Treasurer, presented them with a cheque to the value of £200. Joanne Marriott, Senior Hospice Fundraiser, attended the Nova Club's January meeting to receive it. Thorpe Hall Hospice still has £2.5 million to raise for the new building but work has started and the new building at Thorpe Hall will be open and receiving patients this summer. In January 2014 the Club presented £200 to the Scaldgate Club which is a social club for adults with learning difficulties. Nova is well known for its cake stand at the Whittlesey Festival, raising £163.35 last year. The Club meets on the 1st Wednesday

This month’s editorial may appear a little different, but I strongly felt that I needed to encourage those who, for whatever reason, are feeling overwhelmed by seemingly unsolvable circumstances. After a ministry career spanning over 40 years, travelling in different countries, and counselling many hundreds of people with a wide range of problems, hurts and confusions; one common thread running through many of them has been an understandable reluctance to be courageous enough to identify and face some deep underlying issues. My sincere desire to help has always challenged me to become more creative in the way I counsel them. A few years ago a recurring problem developed in the rear hall of our church building. We had just concluded widening and remodelling it to create more storage rooms and toilets, and finally laying a new Karndene wood effect floor. It looked great. Unknown to us a fungus has begun to grow in the floor joists of one of the adjoining rooms. Despite cutting out the affected floor and spraying all the surrounding area that we could reach, the fungus continued to spread. On three separate occasions we had to repeat the process, it hadn’t worked. Finally, as much as I hated it, especially when I recalled the painstaking effort spent every day between Christmas and New Year laying it; Deep down I knew that the only solution was to tear up

all the old floor, thoroughly spray the whole area then lay a new one. Sometimes, in order to effectively deal with some of life’s hurts and confusions we have to be willing to face painful realities, or those things we would sooner forget. If we don’t, they will continue to hold us in a vice-like grip of hopelessness. Yet it really doesn’t have to be this way. Today can be a turning point in your life: A moment when you begin to experience freedom from issues which have dominated you for so long, and to also discover a lasting purpose and hope in life, giving you a reason to face each new day with excitement. An excellent Straw Bear Festival is the perfect start to 2015. Too see large crowds gather in Whittlesey with no trouble caused is a great credit to the community and the manner at which businesses operate for both the day and night time economy. The event was again a massive credit to the organisers and the hard work they put in to make it a success for us all.. Over the last month we saw an increase in damages and thefts at the New Road allotments. Sheds, Green houses and signage being damaged and items stolen from allotment owners. After some excellent partnership work we have identified persons responsible and are currently working to bring this to a close. Our other work has seen incidents occur where

businesses were targeted by thieves. Again causing damage and stealing property. As yet we have not identified any suspects from these but continue to work to be proactive stopping persons and vehicles driving around acting suspiciously. Once again thank you for your assistance calling us with your concerns for persons acting strangely. Other good work this month has been officers assisting at a large number of RTC’s over Fenland offering first aid to seriously injured persons, arresting persons for assaults and matters of drink drive. Plus also the confiscations of cars and items in relation to hare coursing on farm lands and bringing them before the courts for these matters.

1. We cannot tell the story of Jesus the Christ without telling the story of His Church. The New Testament writer Saint Luke has left a two volume book, The Gospel of Jesus (St Luke’s Gospel) and the Acts of the Apostles. St Luke’s Gospel tells the story of Jesus and the Acts of the Apostles the origins of the Church. Jesus founded the Church with the calling of his first followers. They in turn called others and built up the Church.2. We become members of the Church through baptism. In baptism we share in the person of Christ and begin our journey in faith to become more like him. We share this journey with others and are thereby the Church. Faith is not something we can hold on our own, we share it with others.3. The writer St Paul speaks of Jesus as the Head of the Church, the one who holds all

believers together. Each Christian has a place within the whole body of which Christ is the Head. You cannot be a Christian, a follower of Christ, on your own. You must walk hand in hand with others.4. Christians are not just spoken of in the Bible as followers of Jesus. Jesus is the Son of God the Father and brings us into this relationship with Him. As children of God we are his brothers and sisters. This is true for all who accept Jesus as their Lord and in their baptism become one with him and one with all who have been baptised. Simply put: you cannot be a Christian, a follower of Jesus, and not accept your place within the Church. The Church is a worldwide family of believers with God as Father and Jesus as Brother held together by the Spirit who is God’s love.

This month we would like to challenge people’s tendency to separate being a Christian from being a member of the Church. You may have heard it said that you can be a Christian and not be part of the Church. Well, is this the case? We would say no and here are a few reasons for you to think about:

Some local anglers would say that East Delph Fishery is one of the best kept secrets in the angling world in this area. Over the years it was considered by a few anglers as one of the best fisheries around. For one reason or another it got neglected then overtaken by other venues, but the faithful remained and now

that it has been placed in new hands some big changes to the East Delph Lakes are taking place under the guidance of new owner James MacKay. A few weeks ago there was a massive fish survey on the lakes and quite a lot of fish were removed to make way for some prime fast growing stock fish. After things had settled down James has decided to close two of the lakes and introduce a massive restocking programme

The Back Lake will now become the fisheries prime water with only the very best fish stocked. “The fishery is going through changes and in the not too distant future the East Delph Lakes will be a fishery full of the best fish I can find from around the country. But I want to emphasise that in my eyes pleasure anglers will come first and my gates are open and will be open to them throughout the transition period and beyond. Whittlesey’s best kept secret is open for business and there will always be room for them” He added “All match bookings have been honoured, but the New Year will see no further matches at East Delph Fishery”. Float Fish Farm Fishery is also expanding, owner Dale Hudson has seen his fishery rapidly gain a big following and has been quick to see the potential of club matches in the area and work is now complete on two new match lakes and fish have already been stocked and by spring time matches will be taking place. The form of our local waters continues to impress everyone that fishes the likes of the Briggate, Bower and Ashline below the locks, its bread punch fishing at its best.

THE MONTH

Chicken Jalfrezi

Ingredients:• ½ kg Boneless Chicken thigh (we can dice this for

you)• 1 Onion diced thinly

• 1 Egg• 2 Tomatoes, chopped

• 4 Green Chilies, chopped• ½ cup Oil

• 1 tsp Garlic Paste• 1 tsp Red Chili Powder

• 1 tsp Salt• 2 tsp Chili Sauce

• 2 tsp Ketchup• Black Pepper

• Fresh Coriander

Instructions:1.Put boneless chicken in a bowl and marinate

with salt, chili powder, black pepper, chili sauce and ketchup, leave it overnight if possible.

2. In a pan, heat some oil and cook garlic paste and tomatoes for 5 minutes.

3. Add marinated chicken in the pan and cook until the chicken is cooked and tender, you will

see the oil starting to drift.4. In a separate frying pan, fry off the onion for

2-3 mins5. Beat eggs and add some salt and black

pepper, add to the onion and fry well. Roughly cut the fried egg mixture, and add this to the

chicken.6. Add some coriander leaves and serve with

fluffy rice, nan and popadoms.

One of my all time favourite curries, and

really easy to make, I go for medium heat, but if you want it hotter, use red chilli and leave the

seeds in.

We finished another carol float in December and raised over £6000 pounds in our special year this being our 50th year of Round Table and the first full year of the newly named float The Neville Taylor Float who sadly passed away two years ago, and is sadly missed by all. Round Table would like to take this opportunity to say a big THANK YOU to the residents of Thorney, Benwick, Turves, Coates and Eastrea and all of Whittlesey who have helped us raise the money for the local community over the years. We distribute your generous donations right back into the local area and over the years we have donated to the Whittlesey Juniors Football Club, Netball Warriors, all the schools, Eastrea hall, students from Sir Harry Smiths school who go on projects to help those in need all over the world and Shannon Corr and a 1/3rd of the money goes into the senior citizen party which Neville Taylor help to start up and is still going today, so please look out in October/ November for our leaflet. We recently moved the party to childers. We would also like to take this opportunity to make a special thank you to Kevin Wright (who has been driving Santa for over twenty years) and Sharon Weston who has made a huge contribution and has helped us with Santa. This month we explore why our bodies fall into chronic (long periods) of ill-health. Understanding the why allows us to address the how, I.e. How do we return to health.

Long periods of ill health occur because our own healing mechanism is disrupted. Rarely is it the fault of our cells and often it is due to us creating obstacles for our healing mechanism, in a way sabotaging it. Nobody does this on purpose rather it is a consequence of our environment or state of mind. These obstacles can be broadly categorised into 4 groups.

PhysicalJoint stiffness, muscular tension and muscular imbalances within the non-symptomatic areas (I.e. the body in general as opposed to the painful area). These physical restrictions whether present as a result of the problem or prior to the problem will reduce the healing rate.

OccupationalWork related activities that create or maintain physical and mental distress, I.e. sitting for many hours, heavy lifting, problems with colleagues or managers, workloads, time pressures, etc.

Social Pressures exerted by family or friends on both the physical and mental body, e.g. caring duties for loved ones or children, relationship problems and obligations.

PsychologicalOur perceptions and fears of our current state and the impact it may have on our future. These perceptions if unquantified can lead to fear, anxiety and depression.

All of these situations will create a sub-optimal environment for our healing mechanism by affecting our - blood flow and blood composition,- hormonal balance, - altering of homeostatic process (i.e. those basic functions which keep us alive such as kidney filtration, respiration, digestion, heart beats, etc),- Neural output,- Muscular tension,

Healing requires calm in both our physical and mental self . Therefore, we need to ensuring we have created the space for us to heal is our lives. Unfortunately this may mean we have to sacrifice in the short term but if we heal faster and better than surely it is worth it?

Recent public engagement over proposals to replace the King’s Dyke level crossing near Whittlesey has met with overwhelming support from local residents. 827 responses were received to Cambridgeshire County Council’s consultation survey with 95% of respondents saying they supported replacing the level crossing at this well-known traffic pinchpoint. Location 3, the option for a bridge and bypass of the crossing around buildings to the south, received the support of a majority of respondents (58%). Locations 1 and 2 gained 17% and 23% of preferences respectively. The bridge and bypass route was also supported by Whittlesey Town Council. The Location 3 route provided the least disruption to existing traffic during construction and affects fewer businesses than other routes although it is a longer route that will take up to 3 additional months to build and cost slightly more than other options. In order to join the existing A605 the bypass will require roundabouts at both Funthams Lane and the access to the Hanson’s works. The inclusion of roundabouts at these points was seen as a particular benefit of the proposal by local workers who find it difficult to exit these roads safely at busy times. A lot of useful feedback was received during the public consultation from local residents and businesses. Issues arising included concerns over the impact on businesses and the implications on traffic flow as well as the economic benefits and drawbacks of the different options. The feedback is being taken on board by

project officers and will inform future decisions. The majority of those replying to the consultation: 71% came from Whittlesey, a further 10% came from Eastrea, Coates or surrounding villages with 7% of replies from people in Peterborough. The remainder came from within Cambridgeshire (7%) or outside the county (6% all figures are rounded). Unsurprisingly over 90% of those filling in the survey listed their most frequent means of transport as car. The second most popular means of travel was by bus. Replacing the level crossing is anticipated to cost just over £13.5m. The majority of funding has already been allocated with £5m from the Growth Deal, £3m from the Local Transport Body and £3.5m County Council funding. Around £2m of monies have yet to be identified. Plans for the scheme are due to be discussed at the next Economy and Environment Committee. A decision about the scheme will be made at this meeting. Should improvements to King’s Dyke be approved, Council Officers will take forward the chosen location to the first stage of the planning process. The consultation ran from 30 October to 15 December 2014 and involved public exhibitions and information in the local Discovering Whittlesea magazine which is distributed across Whittlesey, Eastrea and Coates. It was also advertised on posters around the areas, through postcards available in council buildings and GPs surgeries, via Facebook, Twitter and through parent mail. Information was also made available in the local library.

Many of my clients know they can secure a guaranteed income if they are sick or suffer an accident in exchange for a regular monthly premium. They under-stand the financial security that this provides them and their families, knowing that basic expenses can be met even if they are unable to work. I came across another example recently where a client has a significant pension benefit to look forward to at their normal retirement age, they know that they can take this pension earlier but there is a reduction in benefit of about 4% for every full year it is taken early. So in simple terms a £20,000 p.a. pension taken 10 years early reduces that benefit by 40%. The problem being, even if the remaining pension increases, it is unlikely to catch up to the amount it would have been if taken at ‘normal retirement’ time.

The reason pension providers reduce benefits for early payment (younger clients) is the expectation that they will have to pay out for

longer than they expected. Unsurprisingly those wishing to gain access early are the ones that are penalised, so it is important to have a financial safety net in place in order to ‘keep your powder dry’.

When people are asked why they might want access to their pension earlier, it came down to the possibility of not being able to work. So another benefit of an Income Protection Plan could be the preservation of pension benefits that are scheduled to last a lifetime. When buying or selling a house it is most important the information you provide is accurate and true. Most people are of the view that the information which is provided on the property information form is not very important, however that is far from the case. If a buyer enters into an agreement to purchase a property and has relied on the information provided as being true; if they subsequently find out that information is untrue, and had they known the truth it would have influenced them in going ahead with the purchase, then the seller may be liable and the buyer may have an action for breach of warranty and be entitled to compensation. A further concern is where the substantive details about the property are not true. This can usually be seen where a conversion or new build is being sold and the property does not comply with the planning permission or breaches the council building regulations, but is being portrayed as doing so. Under these circumstances, and if the breach is a material breach and has been

relied on to the detriment of the buyer, then an action – dependent upon the circumstances – may arise for negligent or fraudulent misrepresentation, which may result in the buyer being able to set aside the transaction and or obtain damages.

If you think you have a claim under these circumstances it is important to act quickly and take legal advice on what action is available.

| Community newsSecond Crop Music and VocalizeSecond Crop and Vocal’ize came together in February 2014. Their music is from all periods, from the 60s right up to present day. Genres played by the group include: Motown, Pop, Reggae, Jazz and Rock. All the music is arranged and produced using MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) files by Alan on the keyboards; with the vocal harmonies giving the group a unique sound. Their gigs since forming include performing at local public houses – all day to a packed audience at the back of the Black Bull Inn, Whittlesey, on Festival Day, Yaxley Beer Festival and various other local community events.

BackgroundSecond Crop started as an idea in 2008/9 when Keith and Alan were talking about forming a vocal group. In the 1960s and 70s they were former members of a Whittlesey band called The Mayze which rehearsed and performed the occasional gig at The Ram in Whittlesey.

In the late 60s the band signed up with a big UK agency, which brought work all over the UK; including Rebecca’s Night Club in Birmingham where most of the household names you hear today started their musical careers. The band split-up in 1970 after supporting acts such as: Desmond Decker, Mac Arthur Park, Mungo Jerry, Eddie Flanogan and many others. In 2012 with Keith on vocals and Alan on keyboards/vocals Second Crop was formed. After trying to find a female vocalist in January 2014 Vocal’ize responded to their advertisement on a local web site for musicians. Vocal’ize started singing together in 2013. Made up of Lady Ska (Sharon), Cem’ize (Clare) and Ms T (Trudy) who all come from a variety of singing backgrounds including: Jazz, Reggae, Ska, Soul and Gospel. Between them they’d previously supported acts such as: Blazing Squad, Selector, Bad manners, Laurel Aitken – The God father of Ska.

Granddad raises money through musicLocal musician, fundraiser and devoted granddad Geoff Ash, from Whittlesey, has raised nearly £1,000 for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) which supports his three year-old granddaughter Eva. Geoff Ash writes and records his own guitar instrumentals for his page on YouTube and reached a landmark of one million views in 2014. Spurred on by this victory and the drive to raise money for EACH which supports his son’s family and little granddaughter Eva, Geoff returned to live performing after a 50 year gap and has so far performed several gigs across Cambridgeshire to raise valuable funds for the charity. Eva is three years-old and was born with a rare genetic condition, CDG-1A. Due to her condition she cannot stand, talk, or eat and drink and has to be fed via a tube directly into her stomach. During her short life she has had numerous stays in hospital. Eva attends a range of services at the charity’s Milton hospice including the therapy play group, hydrotherapy sessions and she and her family receive short break care at the hospice. Geoff said: “When I reached one millions views on my YouTube, and with encouragement from the EACH fundraising team, I decided to play my first live gig in 50 years at Serpentine Green in

Peterborough. Since then I’ve played several more including slots at The Grafton in Cambridge and Tesco in Milton, raising near on £1,000. EACH volunteers accompany me at my gigs and it’s thanks to them that the collections have been so successful. “If space permits I also take along a gorilla and monkey - the children love them and their presence increases donations on the day. “The services offered by EACH have been invaluable to not only to Eva, but my son Paul and his wife Jill. I have found that playing for EACH is inspiration enough for people to donate. It is a well known, much loved charity that does wonderful work for special children and their families. “For someone who was told as a teenager by a music teacher to give up trying to learn the guitar, and now being to play and raise funds for such a great cause make me very proud.” Geoff’s music is free to download in return for a charity donation and he is willing to travel and per-form at any venue within a reasonable distance from Peterborough for free in return for a donation made directly to EACH. • Bad breath• Red gums, (gingivitis) sometimes the gums can bleed• Loose teeth• Brown plaque along the gum line• Lumps, bumps and abnormalities in the mouth• Pain in the mouth off food, becoming head shy not wanting to be touched around the head or mouth• Blood in drool/saliva sometimes see in the water or food bowls• In severe cases there may even be a discharge from the nose

We can keep our pets teeth clean and healthy with regular brushing. This really needs to be done when our pets are young, sometimes it is hard to introduce brushing when they are older. Brushing can only prevent, not cure, so if your pet already has some dental problems it is best to have a dental at your vets and start once the

teeth are clean. If brushing is difficult or your pet is not happy with you brushing their teeth, we have other products you can use. We have types of oral rinse that can be applied to the mouth after food, these help keep plaque to a minimum and can prevent gingivitis. We have solutions that can be added to pets drinking water to help prevent the build up of plaque, and adhesive gels that you can apply directly to the teeth stopping the build up of plaque and help reduce gum disease. You can also give dental toys, these are usually good for your pets to chew on helping to keep teeth clean, rope toys can help with teeth flossing and reducing the build up of food on the teeth. You can also feed your pets dental food, some companies formulate special food that when eaten help keep teeth clean and have active ingredients that help break down plaque. You can also supplement your pets diet with dental chews/biscuits. These can help when brushing is difficult but should be used along side other preventatives. These should also be fed in moderation, as some can be high in calories.

We hope you found the last edition helpful, this time round we thought we would mention GAP/RTI, this is often over looked and instantly declined by the customer as just another insurance product! Well we’re here to tell you that these two products are probably the best thing the motor trade has to offer and they really are all they are cracked up to be,GAP insurance is an insurance product designed to compensate you for the difference between the purchase price or financed value of your car and the payout you receive from your car insurance company if your car is written off. Allow me to explain. When you purchase a car, you normally tell your insurance company the purchase price. They use this as the ‘insured value’ on your insurance policy. However, if your car is written off – even within a short time of your purchasing it – your insurance payout will almost certainly be less than the insured value.There are numerous reasons for this:• Insurance payouts reflect the current value of your car – not the purchase price• Insurance companies will often try to pay out closer to trade sale price rather than retail price• If you have owned the car for some time, it will naturally have depreciated in value anyway Insurance companies would say their system is fair – why should you get back the purchase price of a car you may have bought some time ago? We think that this is fair too, but there is one huge problem with this if you have bought the car on finance: You may owe the finance company more

than the amount of the insurance payout. Remember, even though the car has been written off, you still owe the finance company the money you borrowed to buy the car.So, to sum up, there are two reasons to purchase GAP Insurance for your car:• To protect yourself against the risk of owing the finance company money after your car has been written off.• To enable yourself to spend the same amount of money on a replacement car, even though your car has depreciated and/or your insurance payout is less than you originally paid.Return To Invoice (RTI) GAP Insurance• RTI GAP insurance aims to pay out the difference between the amount you originally paid for your car (what’s on the sales invoice) and the amount your insurance company pays you if it’s written off.• If you are buying a used car, then it is worth checking the exact terms and conditions of the payout before you purchase GAP Insurance.• Some RTI policies will pay out based on your invoice price, but some will only pay a certain percentage of the car’s book price (Glasses Guide), often 110%. • For example, if you paid £5,000 for a second-hand car, but the Glass’s price was £4,250, then at 110% of Glass’s Guide price, your payout would be limited to £4,675. Make sure you understand what payout you might get before you pay for GAP insurance. It tells the hilarious story of Deloris Van Cartier, a wannabe diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a crime and the cops hide her in the last place anyone would think to look—a convent! Under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she rediscovers her own. A sparkling tribute to the universal power of friendship, Sister Act is reason to REJOICE!
