Compiled by Mila Lira At press time the Copper was being sold at $3.70 a pound. Resolution Copper Resolution Copper recently gave an update to the Superior Town Council and their stakeholders last week. Jon Cherry, Vice President of Environment, Legal and External relations explained in the update that in 2011 Resolution Copper gave $51,000 in financial support to education based programming and $582,000 to community charitable giving in

Superior and throughout the Copper Corridor. Cherry also commented that they remain optimistic that the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange will be approved before the August Congressional Recess. Currently there has been a backlog of federal land exchange bills and there is some hope that the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act can be passed before a new congress is seated in January 2013. Currently the number 10 shaft is at *5474 feet

below the Earth’s surface. The number nine shaft redevelopment is currently at *3170 feet below the Earth’s surface. These numbers were reported to the Copper Area News on April 27. Millrock Announces Drill Results and Further Drilling Plans, San Jose and Dry Mountain Copper Porphyry Project, Safford District, Southeast Arizona Millrock Resources Inc. announced last month results of recent drilling at its San Jose project located in the Safford District of

southeast Arizona. Four drill holes were completed by Millrock with funding provided by Inmet Mining Corporation (“Inmet”). Inmet has the option to earn a 70% interest in the project. Also, Millrock and Inmet announced that they will proceed with an additional drill program on the project later in 2012. The holes in the most recent program were drilled in the northern part of Millrock’s San Jose property and targeted anomalies detected by airborne ZTEM geophysical methods.

Weak mineralization was identified in one hole, and porphyry-style alteration was observed in two other holes. Geological observations indicate proximity to a porphyry deposit. Millrock and its partner Inmet have agreed to carry out further drilling to test magnetic anomalies in proximity to known porphyry mineralization and anomalous geochemical conditions. The program will consist of four holes totalling approximately 4,300 m of drilling (one hole will be drilled on the

adjacent Dry Mountain claim block which is also subject to the agreement with Inmet). Down-hole geophysical surveys will be carried out if warranted. Additional geological and geochemical work will precede drilling which is anticipated to commence in the summer of 2012.Rosemont Copper – Augusta Closes Red Kite Loan Facility Extension Augusta Resource Corporation announced the closing of the one year extension on the US$43 million senior secured loan

By Rev. Dennis Van GorpFamily Life Christian Center From Exodus 20:12, Leviticus 19:3, Proverbs 1:8 & 6:20, we discover these

words of wisdom: “Honor and respect your mother and do not forsake her teaching.” Jesus followed this advice as He was growing up. Luke 2:51 tells us that He was

obedient to His parents and also grew in wisdom, stature and in favor with God and man. As an adult and near death, He followed Hebrew tradition as Mary’s eldest son.

He appointed John the task of taking care of and providing for His mother, as He would no longer be around to do it. Honor and respect share a lot of the same meanings. Honor

Pastor’s Cornertends towards a high regard, primarily dealing with glory, fame and renown. Respect has to do with our feelings, as in showing honor to someone. Being a mother is a full time position. Professionals charge a lot to do that job for us. Unfortunately, stay at home moms are generally thought

of as non-working. During the time when most families were able to make ends meet on dad’s single income; mothers were responsible for most of the duties of raising the children. Today, when both parents usually have to work, they

PHOENIX – Due to the high risk of wildfire in southeastern Arizona, State Forester Scott Hunt today announced that the Arizona

State Forestry Division will be implementing fire restrictions for 3.5 million acres of state-owned lands in that region.

Arizona State Forester issues fire restrictions on state owned lands in Southeast Arizona

Effective Monday, May 7, 2012, at 8 a.m., fire restrictions on State lands will prohibit campfires, charcoal-burning devices and use of acetylene or other torches. Smoking is also prohibited unless it is within an enclosed vehicle or building, developed campground or area that is cleared of all flammable materials. These restrictions include a prohibition on the use of any fireworks. “In light of the increasing fire danger and wildfire activity we are seeing in the southeastern portion of the State, these fire restrictions are necessary to prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public health and safety,” said State Forester Scott Hunt

“It’s especially important that Arizonans follow these restrictions and others implemented locally to limit the potential of devastating fires this summer.” Arizonans are asked to be especially careful with fire in all parts of the state, not just in the areas covered by these restrictions. State lands in other regions may be placed in restrictions in the subsequent weeks as fire danger conditions warrant. These fire restrictions apply to the following State Trust Lands, Game & Fish Wildlife Areas, Arizona State Parks, and Department of Transportation right-of-way property in southeast Arizona:Arizona State Trust Lands and Department of Transportation Lands:All State Trust Lands and Department of Transportation Lands located outside of municipalities within Cochise County, Santa Cruz County, Pima County, Pinal County south of the Gila River, Graham County south of the San Carlos Reservation, and Greenlee County south of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest.Arizona State Parks (by County):

• Cochise County: Kartchner Caverns State Park• Graham County: Roper Lake State Park• Pima County: Catalina State Park• Pinal County: Picacho State Park• Santa Cruz County: Patagonia Lake State Park, San Rafael State Natural Area, and Sonoita Creek State Natural Area State Park campgrounds will remain open; however these seven parks in Southeastern Arizona will be under fire restrictions. Please call 602-542-4174 regarding fire restrictions in all 27 State Parks or go to AzStateParks.gov for more information.Arizona State Game and Fish Wildlife Areas (by County):• Cochise County: Manhattan Claims, Clarence May Memorial Wildlife Area, Sierra Vista Shooting Range, White Water Draw Wildlife Area, Willcox Playa Wildlife Area, and Yarbrough• Graham County: Cluff Ranch Wildlife Area and Roper Lake and Land• Pima County: Arivaca Lake and Land, Santa Rita Wildlife Area, Three Points Shooting Range and Tucson Mountain Wildlife Area• Pinal County – South of

the Gila River: Aravaipa Canyon Wildlife Area and Picacho Reservoir• Santa Cruz County: Agua Caliente Road, Bog Hole Wildlife Area, and Coal Mine Spring Pursuant to A.R.S. 37-623, the State Forester is given authority to declare prohibitions on fire causing activities in the unincorporated areas of the state during times of high fire potential. The State Forester’s Notice of Fire Restrictions prohibits the following activities:• Building or maintaining a fire, campfire, or charcoal burning device. Petroleum and propane fueled stoves, lanterns, heating and livestock branding devices are exempt.• Smoking, unless it is done within an enclosed vehicle, building or developed campground, or within an area at least 10 feet in diameter and barren or cleared of all flammable materials.• Welding or use of acetylene or other torch device with an open flame.• The use of fireworks. Note: If local authorities have imposed stronger restrictions than those listed above, than the local restrictions shall apply. These restrictions do not apply to private lands. The restrictions are effective May 7, 2012, at 8 a.m. and will continue until further notice.

both must be involved in the raising of their children. Mothers are very important. After all – if you exist, then you have a mother. She is the one who gave you life. She fed, nurtured and dressed you until you were able to do it yourself. Now is the time to return that favor. Mother’s Day is good, but every day should be a mother’s day. Every day we should honor and respect our mothers. This is not a once a year event. Flowers are nice on Mother’s Day, but they are REALLY nice during the rest of the year. Be a blessing to your mother. Respect and honor her for the job she has or is doing in your life. Be sure to say – “Thank you” and “I love you!” Don’t just say it with your words; show her you mean it with your loving actions.

FLORENCE – Parvovirus is a serious, extremely contagious viral infection that primarily affects dogs. Recently, Pinal County Animal Care & Control has seen an increase in the number of new intakes, strays and puppies that appear sick with Parvo infection. Parvo infection is

preventable with a vaccine. All dogs coming into the shelter are vaccinated against a variety of infections, including Parvo, but the vaccine does not help an already sick dog. Even after vaccination, there is a period of susceptibility that can last up to two weeks until the vaccine reaches full effectiveness. “People need to keep new

puppies away from places like dog parks and pet events where they could come in contact with unvaccinated

Animal Care and Control sees increase in Parvo among new intakes

animals,” Animal Control Director Kaye Dickson said. “All dogs should be vaccinated against Parvo. Most vets administer a combination vaccine that will protect against Parvo and other infectious diseases.” If you find a stray dog,

Dickson advises to keep the stray separated from your other pets until its owner is found or until you are sure it is not sick. Examination by a veterinarian is the only way to be certain of a Parvo diagnosis but there are some tell-tale signs. Parvo virus causes a

variety of symptoms but one fairly reliable indicator is extremely pungent and sometimes bloody diarrhea. Dogs actually shed the virus in their stool even weeks after coming in contact with the infection. Dogs may exhibit unusual posture, be lethargic and dehydrated, have a fever and/or vomiting. Parvo can be fatal. Young animals seem to be at greatest risk but dogs of any age can be affected. “Parvo is hard to kill

because most household cleaners are not effective against the virus,” Dickson said. “One half cup of bleach per gallon of water can be applied to anything that the dog touched, walked on, played with or may have had contact with fecal matter. Because the virus can live so long, you really have to be spraying down and cleaning constantly. The best solution is prevention and vaccination.” The normal vaccination interval for puppies is at six, nine and 12 weeks. Puppies should not be socialized with other dogs at parks or events for at least two weeks after the last vaccination. “We think the increase we’re seeing is because it is breeding season and people may be spending more time outdoors with their pets,” Dickson said. “We need people to be aware that this is an extremely contagious disease in canines – coyotes are probably susceptible, too. Maybe that’s why we see it in the stray population.” Whatever the case, Dickson says Parvo infection

is not a death sentence. “We are seeing a big jump in suspected cases. This requires heightened attention from the public, veterinary community and Animal Control workers.” Pinal County Animal Care and Control operates a combination shelter and adoption center at 1150 South Eleven Mile Corner Road in Casa Grande. Shelter hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Animal Control has dogs and cats of all ages and breeds for adoption. Pets available for adoption are listed on www.petharbor.com.

By Mila Lira For the past seven years the Superior Optimist Club has hosted the annual Honor Roll Banquet. For many years before, the Beta Sigma Phi organization hosted the annual Honor Roll Banquet. Each year the Superior Optimist Club hosts the banquet to recognize students in grades 8-12 who earn the honor roll the first three grading periods of year. There is a challenge for eighth graders entering the program,

if they continue to earn the honor roll through their senior year the Optimist Club will award them with a lap top computer. This year the key note speaker for the banquet was Manuel Guzman V, a 1998 graduate of Superior High School. Guzman is currently the Director of Program Development for Luz Social Services and was recently appointed to the Human Relations Commission for the City of Tucson. During

his address Guzman spoke of his pride for his hometown of Superior he explained that throughout his life the communication skills he learned in high school and throughout his career and college were some of the most important skills he needed. He emphasized the need for students to be able to read, write and speak well. Guzman encouraged the students to exercise their brains as an athlete would exercise their bodies and to

develop a habit of service. This year there were eight eighth grade students from Superior Junior High who began their challenge to earn laptop computers. The eighth graders recognized with certificates this year are: Terrence Flowers, Gabriella Kipp, Jose Lira Jr., Ivie Lopez, Elias Olmos, Ariana San Miguel, Phalicitee Thomas, and Ciarra Villaverde. Students also earning certificates are: Alyssa Barragan, Chris

On April 25, Gila Community College hosted “CVIT DAY at GCC”: the first of its kind, Career and Technical Education Fair. More than 250 high

school students, mostly sophomores, from CVIT’s member districts: Superior, Miami, Globe, San Carlos, Hayden, and including Liberty High

Welding Program presentation by CVIT Welding Students (Submitted photo)

Students at Hayden, Superior explore career options at GCC CVIT Day

School and the Globe Regional Education Center, participated in the festivities. First visit on the agenda was the Gila Community College Regional Training Center where mining programs were featured and special focus given to Electrical and Instrumentation program. Upon arrival to the Gila Pueblo Campus, students were greeted by CVIT Central Program students. Beata Tarasiuk, CVIT Coordinator/Recruiter, gave an orientation to the students and then proceeded on with the tour of the campus. All the presentations were interactive: the Fire Science program was represented by Globe Fire Department with their fire truck and very skilled fire fighters; the Gila County Sheriff’s office was represented in full force, including detectives, prison guards,

and coast guard; the Welding class, with their instructor Jake Kame, gave a wonderful overview and presentation of their amazing work in the welding lab; the Medical profession, which included the Certified Nursing Assistant and Medical Assistant programs, were represented by the CVIT CNA seniors; and the Graphic Design Program presentations were led by GCC Art Instructor Larry Brown, with the current CVIT Graphic Design students’ assistance. After the tour, students were invited to lunch prepared by Pinal Mountain Foundation for Higher Education. Cobre Valley Institute of Technology would like to thank everyone involved in making the “CVIT Day at GCC” a tremendous success. Special appreciation goes to the Globe Fire Department and Chief Al Gameros and to

Gila County Sheriff John Armer and his officers. Cobre Valley Institute of Technology (CVIT) is currently accepting applications for the Fall 2012 semester until the end of May 2012. Do not miss

out on a great opportunity to complete college programs while still in high school with no cost to the student. For more information, call 928-425-9654 or email: [email protected].

As announced on February 27, 2012, the terms of the extension of the Loan include interest payable at LIBOR plus 4.50%, maturing on the earlier of (i) April 21, 2013, or (ii) the date of closing of the senior debt project financing for the Rosemont Copper project and extension of the expiry date of the existing 1,791,700 warrants, held by RK Mine Finance Trust I with an exercise price of C$3.90, by one year to April 22, 2014.Rio Tinto – Rio Tinto sets out track record as Olympics medals provider Rio Tinto today set out its ethical track record to support its role as the official metal provider for the 4,700 medals for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The metal is being sourced from Rio Tinto’s Kennecott Utah Copper mine in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA and its Oyu Tolgoi mine in Mongolia, which goes into commercial production in 2013. Rio Tinto chief executive Tom Albanese said, “Being ethically responsible is a thread that runs through everything we do. We aim to bring long-lasting positive change to the communities where we work, respecting human

rights, bringing economic benefits and looking after the environment. “The metals and minerals we produce go to make things we use every day, and that help contribute to higher living standards, from medicine and soap to housing and mobile phones. “We have rigorous standards for air quality, ecosystems, biodiversity, climate change, the use of energy, land and water and waste disposal. Before we even open a mine we plan for its closure and how to restore the land. “We support London 2012’s commitment to delivering the most sustainable games ever. It aligns with Rio Tinto’s commitment to sustainable development wherever we operate.” In Salt Lake City, Rio Tinto operates strictly within the parameters of its air permits and complies with federal and state air quality regulations, which are based on rigorous standards for protecting human health. In Oyu Tolgoi, Rio Tinto has committed to zero impact on community water sources. The primary water source for Oyu Tolgoi is the Gunii Hooloi aquifer - a deep, non-drinkable water source that is separate from the shallow water sources used by households and animals. Oyu Tolgoi is only allowed to use approximately 20 percent of the water from Gunii Hooloi, so the aquifer can never be exhausted.

According to state law, there are two methods by which police may arrest suspected offenders. The suspect may be physically taken into the department and booked into jail, or the arresting officer may write a citation and release the suspect to appear in court later. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Only criminal citations are listed. All damage

amounts are estimates. Items are given to The Superior Sun by the Superior Police Department and reflect information available at the time the report is compiled.
