Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu and members of the PCSO Criminal Investigations Bureau will be on hand tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the Queen Valley Community Center to talk to area residents about identity theft and credit/debit card fraud. The investigators will give residents additional information to help protect themselves against fraud. On Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office began receiving numerous reports of fraudulent credit and debit

card use/transactions from residents in the Queen Valley and Gold Canyon areas. As of last Wednesday, the PCSO office had received 154 fraudulent credit/debit card reports. According to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, investigators found that the victims had all used their credit or debit cards at either Bashas’, AJ’s Fine Foods and/or Food City locations to make purchases. The fraudulent charges to victims’ accounts are occurring in

PCSO asking for help from the public to identify fraud suspectsArizona, Texas, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, North Carolina, Italy, France, Canada and Mexico. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office has been working with Federal, State, and City law enforcement agencies on this case as it has become International. The FBI has taken the lead in the investigation. The Bashas’ Family of Stores has cooperated with investigators. The store became the victim of a cyber attack which began in June or July of 2012 and was done by suspects who were able to gain access to parts of their security system used to capture payment information from customers. The highly-sophisticated piece of malware software has been identified and contained. Bashas’ will be posting information related to this security breach at all

of their stores to notify customers. “Citizens are urged for their protection to monitor their bank records and transactions as often as possible,” Babeu said. “While in public, be alert of the people around you. Do not permit your cards to be removed from your line of sight. Do not share your personal information with anyone. Do not write your credit card numbers down on any paperwork. Consider carrying your credit and debit cards in protective foil lined sleeves to block / disable the RFI chips and magnetic strips from being read by remote scanners.” To report fraudulent activity on your credit and debit accounts, please call the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency phone number at 1-800-420-8689. The meeting in Queen Valley is open to the public.

The Legends of Superior Eco-Tourism Festival committee announced last week that David Lira will be a speaker during the history luncheon and will be assisting with the guided walks of Main Street and Pinal Avenue for the event scheduled for Feb. 16, 2013. The day will kick off with at the Magma Club at 7 a.m. with a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Superior Optimist Club. Guided hikes will depart from the Magma Club starting at 8:30 a.m. “Mr. Lira has extensive historical knowledge of Superior and the mine,” explained Mila Besich-Lira. “We are excited to have him confi rmed as one of our guides and speakers.” David Lira will join Dr. Steve Sempkin who will speak on the geological history of the area and Scott Wood who will speak on the history of Pinal City and the Silver King

Mine. The three will speak during the second annual history luncheon held at the Magma Club. Tickets are $10 and will include a BBQ sandwich, potato salad, cowboy beans, drink and desert. Funds raised from the luncheon assist with the further development of the LOST trail. Throughout the day there will be guided hikes, including treks to the old U.S. 60 Tunnel, the Cross, Arnett Canyon and Arizona Trail/Picket Post. Educational and historical hikes include a geology hike with Steve Sempkin, photography walk with Jackie Mercandetti, Pinal City hike with Scott Wood, Pinal Cemetery walk with Steve Germick and History of Superior Walks with David Lira. Many of the hikes have limited participation, pre-registration is encouraged. The hikes will range in diffi culty from easy to strenuous. All of the hikes

are free to participate in and will be guided by local hiking enthusiasts and experts from the area.

The Superior Optimist Club will be hosting a series of fundraisers to assist the club with their community projects. Starting Feb. 8, the club will sell raffl e tickets for cash prizes. The tickets will cost $20 and prizes will be $500 for fi rst place, $300 for second and $200

for third. Only 100 tickets will be sold for this raffl e and the winners will be announced on Mar. 9 during the Apache Leap Mining Festival. On Feb. 16, the club will be hosting a pancake breakfast at the Magma Club during the second Annual LOST Eco Tourism

Festival. Breakfast will be $6 and will include either a pancake breakfast or chorizo and egg breakfast. The club is also planning their annual Richard Castaneda Scholarship Horseshoe Tournament for Apache Leap Days on Mar. 9th. Registration will be $20 per team and

registration will begin at 11 a.m. Location of the tournament was not confi rmed at press time. In addition to the raffl e and horseshoe tournament the club will host a Corn Hole tournament in Apr. and their annual Father’s Day Golf Tournament in

By Mila Besich-Lira The Superior Junior High Panthers entered their season tournament with a 7-2 record including two close losses to Eloy and San Carlos. “We knew we had a great opportunity to avenge both those losses on our way to our second straight championship,” explained Coach Luis Navarro. “First we had to get past our first round opponent in Mtn. Vista, who we had defeated earlier in the year 23-15 in our first game back from winter break.” Mountain Vista came out ready to play and it appeared the Jr. High Panthers had not yet woken up. Mtn. Vista jumped lead after the first quarter 6-4 and it seemed like the Panthers could be in for a rough one. This continued throughout the first half and the team trailed 11-9 at halftime. “Going to the locker room, we talked about having to wake up or everything we worked for was about to be taken away from us by a team who wanted it more,” said Navarro. In the third quarter, the Panthers finally woke up with help from a fire alarm that went off during the game. They outscored Mountain Vista 10-2 in the third quarter to give them a 19-13 lead and take control of the game and grab a 28-20 victory. The team was lead in scoring by Austin Navarrette with 10 points and Gage Cruz with 8 points, who went 4 for 4 from the free throw line. Edgar Pacheco added 6, Stevie Denogean added

a 3 point shot and Joseph Diaz-Gonzalez made 1 of 2 free throws to add a point. After this victory the team was on to a semifinal matchup with San Carlos. The game started out quick with Jalon Gomez getting the scoring started with 4 of his 6 points coming in the first quarter. San Carlos came out shooting as well and at the end of the first quarter they had a slim 9-8 lead. In the second quarter, defenses seemed to show up as each team only scored 2 points each and the Panthers went in at the half leading 11-10. In the third quarter, both teams battled back and forth with several lead changes. “We seemed to be in trouble when our high scorer for the game,” explained Navarro. “Gage Cruz, with 11 points, suffered a deep thigh bruise and needed some time to recover.” Marcos Bueno came off the bench and provided the spark they needed, scoring 7 straight points to end the third, which gave the Panthers the needed boost to pull away from the Braves. Cruz returned to go 4 for 4 on key free throws down the stretch as they maintained the lead. Austin Navarrette contributed 8 points and Jesse Lopez 2. The Panthers were able to pull away by outscoring San Carlos 24-15 in the second half to defeat them 35-25. With this game behind them, the Panthers were on their way to the Championship game against Eloy who had defeated Globe in the other

semifinal game. “We had new found energy to start the game against Eloy,” explained Navarro. “Seeing the players come out focused and ready to play gave me some confidence.” The Panthers came out

By Mila Besich-Lira Parents, grandparents, family and friends all packed into the gym for what was the last home game for the 2012-13 Basketball season. Eleven Seniors and their parents were recognized at the traditional end of the season ceremony on Jan. 31 with games versus the Hayden Lobos. Several of these young men and women have been playing together since they were in junior high, making the last home game of the season not just a high school finale but the last game for a six-year career participating in Superior basketball or cheer. Some of the Seniors who will not be going on to play a spring sport the game marked the last time they will wear a Superior Panther uniform, and those final games played last week will be the last time they dribble the ball or attempt a three pointers. Their next times on the gym floor will be for Prom and Baccalaureate. Between the girls and boys varsity basketball games, each of the seniors were announced along with their parents or those the seniors wished to recognize for their support. The names of the athletes and their parents were announced and the SHS Spiritline presented the athletes parents with flowers. This year’s seniors on the SHS Spiritline were Alyssa Barragan, daughter of Sandra and Michael Barragan, and Yulissa Sandoval, daughter of Lupita and Ruben Ybarra. Seniors on the girls basketball team were Nicole Godinez who recognized her mother

Arlynn Godinez and grandmother Cindy Benson, and Christine Grap, who recognized her father Mikey Grap and Aunt Kayla Grap. Senior members of the Boys Basketball team were Jesse Aguilar, son of Cassie and Tommy Aguilar; Angel Cardenas, who recognized his Aunt Hilda and Uncle Joey Cardenas; Louie Fuentes, who recognized his sister Alysia Fuentes and his father Louie Fuentes; Albert Mendoza, son of Mary and Albert Mendoza; Mario Padilla, son of Debbie Contreas and Jimmy Padilla; Raul Schcolnick, son of Anna and Raul Schcolnick; and Ray Villalobos, son of Maria and Lucino Pacheco-Galindo. The 2012-13 basketball season was not the easiest for the Panthers. The girls varsity team finished their season a record of 3-18. The girls lost their last two games 52-26 against the Ray Bearcats and 23-20 against the Hayden Lobos. The Boys Varsity team finished their season with a record of 4-14. The boys beat the Hayden Lobos 63-55 but lost to Gilbert Classical Academy 75-35 in their final week of season play. The spring baseball, softball and tennis teams will begin practice this week. Scrimmage and regular season games and matches will start later this month.

Pinal County – Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013 marks EITC Awareness Day, a nation-wide effort to increase public awareness about Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and free tax preparation sites. Individuals in Pinal County who work but don’t earn a lot of money may be eligible for free income tax assistance where they can go find out if they qualify for EITC. Volunteer Income Tax As-sistance (VITA) locations provide free tax filing services

to help these taxpayers avoid unnecessary fees and receive every dollar back in Earned Income Tax Credit and other tax credits. The Earned Income Tax Credit is the largest anti-poverty campaign of the U.S. government, lifting millions of families out of poverty since its enactment in 1975. The EITC supplements wages, reduces the recipient’s tax burden, and encourages employment. This year, taxpayers with

By Mila Besich-Lira The temperatures outside may still be too cold to swim and few want to start thinking about the 100 degree temperatures that are weeks away, but that did not stop OMYA international from providing funds to make necessary repairs to the Town of Superior Aquatics Center. Despite the season, the

pool equipment must run every day and during a routine maintenance check, the town found that the pool need several major repairs in order to keep running safely. OMYA’s donation to the town helped to replace broken backwash valves, impeller, light assemblies and the pump and seals for the chlorinator. The funds also covered labor, parts,

Interim Town Manager Rita Wentzel explained that without the generous contributions made by OMYA the pool may not have been able to open. Wentzel was instrumental in working with OMYA to donate the much needed $2,871.

“OMYA has always been a supporter of Superior and the Aquatics Center,” stated Wentzel. “When the pool first opened, they purchased the lane dividers for swim competitions. They routinely sponsor OMYA free swim days during the season. We appreciate all OMYA has done to support the town now and over the years.”

The Panthers stepped up the urgency and Gage Cruz converted a layup getting fouled and making the free throw. Following an Eloy free throw, Stevie Denogean added two points and they
