Ajax

By Taylor Beard It is with a very sad heart that I have to tell you that Ajax, the Superior Police Department’s beloved K-9 unit dog, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 10. Ajax was a magnifi cent German Shepard who was unmistakable as he was all black; he was a truly beautiful dog. He was seven years old and passed away at home, not while on assignment. Ajax had undergone major surgery within the last six months. The Superior Police Department had Ajax for three and a half years, during which time he spent

his time as the partner of Offi cer Kenneth Burnside. Ajax was certifi ed in narcotics searches along with being certifi ed to search out hiding suspects. I have had the pleasure to hang out with Ajax multiple times and especially to see the affect he had on the community, especially children. He was loved by pretty much everyone who he encountered, except probably those he was pursuing. Children loved Ajax and fl ocked to him the moment they saw him, he was always very gentle with them.

Remembering Ajax – Superior’s K-9 passes away Being a dog owner myself, I fully understand how devastating it is to lose a dog. Offi cer Burnside was not only Ajax’s partner, but Ajax was also his pet and friend, spending his off time at home with Burnside and his family. “He was a great all around partner. He took care of me. He loved to work and was right on it the minute he got out of the car,” Offi cer Burnside lovingly said of his late partner. When I asked him to tell me about a great memory of working with Ajax, Offi cer Burnside laughed and said he could talk about Ajax for hours. “He was a great dog. There was one incident up at the SRP station to the east of Superior. We were pursuing a suspect over very rough ground. Myself and the other offi cer were having a hard time getting over the terrain and we looked over and there’s Ajax, leaping from boulder to boulder like a gazelle. He had caught the scent and pretty quickly found the guy. All of the sudden

he ran up and stuck his nose between two large rocks, where the suspect was hiding. We would have never found the guy without Ajax,” he recalled. He went on to tell me about how the astute fella let him know when something just wasn’t quite right. “He really looked out for me. He never barked, but he always let me know when there was someone around that I needed to know about,” said Burnside. I especially enjoyed

hearing about how much the kids in town love Ajax and how “they would always ask if they could pet the ‘Werewolf.’” Offi cer Burnside took a few moments to tell me about some of Ajax’s wonderful character traits that we may never have had a chance to see. He lovingly described how at home he was great with the kids, perfect with them in fact. “Ajax always knew when it was appropriate to roughhouse and he never let anyone he didn’t know

around those children. He was very protective,” Burnside said. Every Saturday Offi cer Burnside used to give Ajax a bath and Ajax was not a big fan of the bath, but the minute he was out and being toweled off, he was all about love, jumping around and excited. When Offi cer Burnside told me this, it pulled at every one of my heartstrings because my dogs do the same exact thing. Aside from serving and protecting, Ajax was also a happy, go-lucky

By Taylor Beard During the Dec. 1 Superior Town Council meeting, the council voted to approve changing Cherrywood Place in the Highlands to Helen Snyder Place. Changing the name of the street was introduced by Jed Lant, the current Public Works director. While the council does not currently have policy for the street, it was acknowledged that this has now taken place several times and that it needs to be

put on the agenda to make policy for such actions in the future. The council unanimously voted to have the name changed to Helen Snyder place. So who was Helen Snyder? As her nephew, Jed was more than willing to give some background about his aunt: Helen Ruth Lant was born in Binghamton, New York, on Oct. 31, 1936, Halloween or All Hallow’s Eve, a day

By Mila Lira Since late this summer the Town of Superior with support from Resolution Copper has been participating in a community planning exercise called the “Hearts & Mind Strategy”. Over the past few months’ local residents, business owners, and community leaders have taken part in the various stages of the strategies information gathering stage. Vice Mayor Olga Lopez has been working with the facilitation company and a small group of volunteers to ensure that a broad range of citizens were involved. On Wednesday, Dec. 14, the Town of Superior will host a meeting to release the outcomes of the “Hearts & Mind Strategy.” The meeting will be held at the Superior Junior/Senior High Multipurpose room at 7 p.m. Residents are encouraged to attend. Those attending will be able to ask questions about the outcome of the strategy.

Town of Superior invites participation – hear the final results from the Hearts and Minds strategy

Street to be named after former council member, Helen Snydernot exactly synonymous with ‘birthday’. She had the pleasure of growing up in Newark, New Jersey with five brothers. As a spritely, little kid, she made money scrubbing floors, thus learning the value of money hard earned. Having decided that the bitterly cold winters and sweltering, humid summers of New Jersey were not for them, Helen and her brothers decided to venture west to the more consistent climate of Arizona. They ended up in Show Low where Helen opened up a Laundromat and

eventually a pet store. It was in this pet store that she met Marshall Snyder, whom she would eventually marry. After marrying, Marshall was transferred to Superior where he became a sergeant of the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. Helen was happy to assist him in the office. Helen went on to buy the Copper Valley Inn, Bar and Restaurant, but she later said that the bar business just wasn’t for her. Deciding to move more in the direction her husband had, she was offered a position by the Town of

Superior to work as a dispatcher with the Superior Police Department, which she happily did for three years until she was able to move over to Pinal County to work as a jailer, operating the local jail here in Superior for 20 years until she retired. Having retired, with extra time on her hands, she made up her mind to run for town council. Helen easily secured her seat and working diligently for the people, made her way up to Vice Mayor; she worked on the Superior Town Council for seven years total.

In her spare time, Helen was an active volunteer for numerous groups and also worked to locate grant money for the town of Superior. She loved a challenge and would stick to her guns to see her task through to the end. Helen loved to talk, was always helpful and was there when you needed her most. “I feel she was a very productive member of this community for 40 years, and she had genuine interests here. Her friends and family feel it would be suitable to name a street in her honor.” Jed candidly explained.

By Mila Lira The Superior Parks and Recreation department is making plans to host a monthly event in Superior. The event is called First Fridays and will be held the first Friday of each month. Many communities in Arizona and throughout the nation have started hosting these events as a way to attract people to downtown

commerce areas and provide an avenue for street vendors to meet more customers. The First Friday events in Superior will feature local entertainment, competitions, vendors, art, talent shows, and food. The parks and recreation department is inviting all local groups such as school groups, churches, and service groups such as the

Superior Parks and Recreation Department to host First Fridays

Optimist and Rotary to get involved to help grow the event. The First Friday events are scheduled to begin on Friday, Jan. 6, 2012. The event will be held on Main Street from 5 to 9

p.m. Anyone interested in assisting with the planning of First Fridays or would like to have a booth at the event should contact Pete Casillas at 520-827-0692.

By Taylor Beard It’s always nice to see high school students who truly understand the importance of harnessing their education and utilizing its benefits to the fullest extent. Last week, Superior High School inducted a few new “Smarties” into the National Honor Society. (We call them “Smarties” because these students truly recognize that with a great education, combined with their ability to exercise all of the resources in front of them, all of their hard work will open so many doors for them, take them so many places that most people only dream of going.) National Honor Society is more than just an honor roll. It serves to honor students who demonstrate excellence

in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character, and has been doing so since 1921. Last Monday night, Dec. 5, current and new members of the Superior chapter of the NHS gathered with their parents to celebrate this achievement by their newest members. Pete Guzman, Superintendent of the Superior School District, was on hand to welcome those who attended the ceremony. Many parents looked on with pride as their students were called forward to join the National Honor Society. Having reached the stage and posed for pictures, the students came to the podium in pairs to recite part of the NHS pledge. Each student was then invited forward to take part in the candle lighting

ceremony and to be officially inducted into the society by following Shayna Wickwire, the current president of the Superior NHS, in the pledge. Each student was announced, along with their many attributes, by Vice Principal William Duarte, and the received the certificate with a smile and a hand shake from Guzman. “What a fantastic bunch of young men

and women we have. I do think that these new members will add a great enthusiasm and ideas to the National Honor Society. We are pleased to have them with us and all that they will bring to the society,” remarked Mrs. Todd, the staff advisor to the Honor Society. Students inducted to the ranks of NHS include: (seniors) Gabby Donlin, Cathy Lucas; (juniors) Jesse Aguilar,

By Mila Lira The Superior Optimist Club hosted its annual Miracle on Main Street Christmas Festival and Parade on Sunday. The event was postponed due the inclement weather of the weekend before. The day included entertainment provided by the Hip Hop Shop dance group led by Billie Jo Villaverde and Baile Folklorico Alma de Superior which is led by Zeena Torres. Local youth also had an opportunity to perform in the open mic talent show. The parade while small this year had seven entries all which were well lit. First place in the parade went to the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce from Kearny for their entry that included an appearance by the Grinch himself. Second place went to Edwardo’s Pizza and third place went to Tameron Ice. Also participating in this year’s parade were Family Life Christian Center, Superior Fire Department and the Superior Optimist Club. Throughout the entire event the Superior Parks and Recreation Department had its inflatable castle open for the kids to enjoy. There were game and food booths and Mayor Jayme Valenzuela and his family provided free hot chocolate to everyone who attended. Santa’s helpers Lindsay Duarte, Hunter Flannigan and Sierra Navarrette from the Family Career and Community Leaders of America chapter at Superior High School assisted Santa throughout the night by handing out the goodie bags. These student leaders also helped to gather additional volunteers from their organization to manage the visits with Santa. Superior Optimist

Superior has Miracle on Main StreetPresident JoAnn Besich thanked everyone for their patience when the event had to be rescheduled and expressed great appreciation to all of

the local businesses and individuals who donated money, services or time to the event, she said “Without the support of the community it would

Optimist’s Clubs 2011 Spirit of Optimism Community Champion, was on hand to happily be the Grand Marshal of Miracle on Main Street event. It was announced during the Dec. 1 Superior Town Council meeting that she had been given this honor due to her many wonderful qualities. President of the Superior Optimists’ Club Mila Lira was happy to give us the low down on why Navarro was chosen. Bertha’s selfless actions and generosity have left an impact on Superior and the surrounding areas. Many lives have been impacted by her dedication to the cause she leads and commitment to assisting the young people of Superior. Bertha continues to serve the needs of our community on a regular basis. She is an icon to volunteerism in Superior and has embodied community spirit by encouraging all to participate in our community. “Bertha Navarro is a leader and inspiration to the community. Her countless hours of service to the community and students of Superior have not gone unnoticed.” Mila said. “I urge all citizens to emulate her selfless actions and generosity within our community.” If you see Mrs. Navarro, be sure to shake her hand or even give her a great big huge for all that she has done for the community of Superior.

By Taylor Beard It’s hard sometimes to get your groove on with your teammates, especially if you have never really played with them before. This was the current predicament the Lady Panthers have found themselves in…lots of talent, but still trying to work out the kinks in the chain. The girls went up against the Lady Vandals of Miami on Tuesday, Dec. 6, and found themselves plagued by some very tough competition. The girls eked out the game to leave with a final score of 15-43, sending the Vandals home satisfied. Two days later, the gals played the Hayden Lady Lobos, fiercely battling to squash them. But home court advantage decided to take a day off and the game ended at 21-42. Have faith, these Lady Panthers are dynamite and they just need to figure out how to get the cogs working together, how to get their team communication to update as easily as their Facebook status…they’re very smart gals, they’ll get it goin’.

Their male counterparts, the Panthers, fared much better this week, showing their rival teams some seriously stylish moves on the court. On Tuesday, Dec. 6, the boys danced circles around the Miami Vandals, and let’s face it, those Vandals just couldn’t keep up. Jesse Aguilar lead the team in both offensive and defensive rebounds, with nine total, followed by Martin Granillo with four. Martin lead the team in steals with six magnificent instances of grab-hand. Mario Padilla lead the team in scoring with 15 points. Granillo was hot on his heels though with 14 points. Louie Fuentes and Christopher Grap each contributed nine points to the end score. With a score of 64-42, the Panthers left the Vandals truly vandalized. During Thursday’s game against the Lobos, the Panthers were back at it, bouncing their way towards victory. This time Martin Granillo lead the team in rebounds with 12, and again in steals with six. Christopher Grap lead the team in

scoring bringing in 24 points, yet again there was Martin nipping at his Nikes with 21 points. The game ended a cool 63-55, sending the Lobos south a little deflated. However, the Panthers soon after had to feel the sting of defeat and in a big way, when they played

Canyon State Academy on Friday, Dec. 9. Hopefully the boys were taking note of ‘what needs improvement’ as they left this game lacking with a score of 25-72. They had the weekend to think about it and work on their noted areas; unfortunately the results of Tuesday’s

game against Salt River were unavailable at press time. The Lady Panthers next play Combs in Queen Creek Wednesday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. Both teams will head to Miami on Friday, Dec. 16, to play the Vandals with the gals playing at 5:30 p.m. and

the dudes playing at 7 p.m. The last regular game of 2011 will be played against Salt River in Scottsdale on Tuesday, Dec. 20: girls at 5:30 p.m. and boys at 7 p.m. The ladies will head to Globe on Thursday, Dec. 22, to take part in the Apache Gold Shootout.

dude with a great attitude. Ajax loved to play fetch, he loved it so much that he rarely wanted to give up the ball. “I would give him the release command and he would drop the ball, but then he would put his paw over the ball…those huge paws just covered it up so you couldn’t see it. Then

Ajax would look at me like ‘You can’t have it,’” the officer said. As many of your certainly knew, Ajax was a huge asset to the community of Superior, and while I already knew this, the love and respect that showed in the way Officer Burnside spoke of Ajax made that understanding so much more poignant. Ajax, Superior will miss you, Bud!

On Dec. 8, the children of Superior Head Start went on their first bus trip, ever, as they traveled to visit Kids’ Closet in San Manuel. Kids’ Closet, supported by SaddleBrooke Community Outreach, has provided the Superior Head Start children with free shoes, clothing and books for more than 11 years. “They enjoyed the scenic views traveling from Superior, through Kearny, Hayden-Winkelman, Dudleville and Mammoth areas; and asked various questions about the snow still visible on the mountains, and about the mining trucks being assembled at the Asarco Ray Mine Pit area.” said teacher Teresita Martinez Olmos. “The children were

pleased to see Copper Basin Railway’s locomotives and counted the rail cars along the track.” she continued. At Kids’ Closet, the children took turns selecting and trying on shoes and clothing, on their own. They enjoyed the process and were happy to receive something new to add to their personal wardrobe. To show their appreciation, the children created a large poster card expressing their “thanks and appreciation” for the clothing and also books received, and the assistance of the staff. The card was presented to the staff of Kids’ Closet and the organization, by the children who were also accompanied by Superior Head Start Staff, parents and community volunteers.

nearby Resolution deposit, which is being developed by Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton. The property is situated at the intersection of the Resolution and San Manuel / Kalamazoo porphyry copper trends. Because of the Tertiary volcanic cover, little exploration work has been previously done by other companies. Through careful geological mapping in combination with airborne magnetic and ZTEM geophysical surveys, Millrock has identified numerous targets that may represent porphyry deposits. Prior drilling by Millrock and VEC resulted in the discovery of porphyry copper mineralization and alteration in Cretaceous-aged rocks hidden beneath Tertiary volcanic cover rocks. VEC has the option to earn a 60 percent interest in the project through exploration expenditures totaling US$3.5 million and payments of US$850,000. Upon completion of the current drill program, VEC will have expended at least US$3.5 million and will be in a position to exercise its option if it makes the remaining necessary cash payments. VEC may earn an additional 10 percent interest, for a total of 70 percent, by funding a feasibility study.Redhawk – San Manuel Redhawk Resources, Inc. announced the results for four additional drill holes of the 2011 resource expansion and definition program and one hole from a new area of porphyry mineralization. 2011 Resource Expansion and Upgrade Drill Program The 2011 drill program is focused on increasing the connection between the Keel and American Eagle (AE) porphyry areas and infill drilling to move a considerable portion of the AE resource and more of the Keel resource into the Measured and Indicated categories in preparation for a Pre-Feasibility Study commencing early in 2012. Results from earlier drilling in the 2011 program were

given in news releases dated June 1, 2011 and September 12, 2011. The drill program is continuing with three core drills working 24/7 on the property. Assay results are pending on a number of completed holes. Assay results for holes, RAE-07-020 drilled vertical to total depth 3671 feet (1119m), RAE-08-029 drilled vertical to total depth 4108 feet (1252m), RAE-11-054 drilled N45W at -85 to total depth 3751 feet (1143m), and RMK-11-070 drilled vertical to total depth 3637 feet (1109m) have been received and significant intervals are shown below. Holes RAE-11-054, which included a lengthy mineralized zone of 900 feet of 0.51 percent Cu and RMK-11-070 were step out holes designed to increase the connection of the Keel and AE deposits. Hole RAE-07-020, which intersected a significant mineralized zone of 1927 feet of 0.48 percent Cu, is an infill resource upgrade hole in the AE, and hole RAE-08-029 is a step out hole at the SE margin of the existing AE resource. Redhawk believes the results from the infill and expansion holes reported above and previously will help not only in demonstrating the continuity of mineralization between the Keel and AE but should also increase the total resources of the combined deposits. Redhawk believes the drilling results from the three holes drilled from the REX-10-047 site west of the Keel resource boundary suggest the strong possibility of an area that can be developed into a new resource. It is also possible that the resource may connect with the existing Keel and AE porphyry resource. Additional drilling will be required in the new area and will be considered after the resource expansion and upgrade drilling in the 2011 drill program is completed. R. Joe Sandberg, Redhawk President and CEO, stated “The resource upgrade and expansion drilling between the Keel and AE deposits continues to be very encouraging. The drilling will lead to a new resource update in early 2012. The

additional permitting, hydrology, metallurgical and mine optimization efforts are continuing in preparation for the Pre-Feasibility Study in early 2012. We believe the outcome of these efforts will continue to move the Copper Creek project closer to a production decision. “ R. Joe Sandberg, CPG, Redhawk President, CEO and a Qualified Person under the meaning of NI 43-101, is responsible for the technical content of this news release. All core samples are picked up on site by Redhawk geologists or delivered by the drillers to Redhawk personnel. All samples are delivered by Redhawk personnel to ALS Laboratory Group ISO 9001:2000 & ISO 17025 in Elko, NV or Reno, NV for assay or to Jacobs Assay Office Registered Assayers in Tucson, AZ for sample preparation to pulps and shipped by Jacobs using UPS to ALS in Reno, NV. Check assay standards are submitted with each assay job, and reviewed for accuracy. Check assaying is being performed by Inspectorate and KD Engineering/Metcon. To view a map of the location of the drill holes and more information on each drill hole please visit the Red Hawk website at: http://www.redhawkresources.com/s/NewsReleases.asp?ReportID=493935&_Type=News-Releases&_Title=Redhawk-Resources-Announces-Additional-Results-of-2011-Resource-Expansion-D
