Blessed Peter Gonzalez’s Story Saint Paul had a conversion experience on the road to Damascus. Many years later, the same proved true for Peter Gonzalez, who triumphantly rode his horse into the Spanish city of Astorga in the 13th century to take up an important post at the cathedral. The animal stumbled and fell, leaving Peter in the mud and on-

lookers amused. Humbled, Peter reevaluated his motivations—his bishop-uncle had secured the cathedral post for him—and started down a new path. He became a Do-minican priest and proved to be a most effective preacher. He spent much of his time as court chaplain, and attempted to exert positive influence on the behavior of mem-bers of the court. After King Ferdinand III and his troops defeated the Moors at Cor-doba, Peter was successful in restraining the soldiers from pillaging, and persuaded the king to treat the defeated Moors with compassion. After retiring from the court, Peter devoted the remainder of his life to preaching in northwest Spain. Having de-veloped a special mission to Spanish and Portuguese seamen, he is considered their patron. Peter Gonzalez died in 1246 and was beatified in 1741.

SOMETHING ABOUT RABBITS AND EASTER EGGS

The eggs and the rabbit are said to be the fruit of a mixture of reli-gious and pagan history. On the one hand, after the death and resur-rection of Jesus, during Lent it was forbidden to eat certain foods, which included eggs. When Easter came, people celebrated by eating eggs, to retaliate from their fasting. The rabbit arises from a legend that in the cave from which Jesus Christ Resurrects, not only was his corpse, but there was also a rab-bit. The rabbit witnessed the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and want-ed to tell people about it. As he did not know how to speak, it oc-curred to him to paint colored eggs and take them to people so that they would understand that a miracle had occurred. But as I men-

tioned at the beginning this is a matter of legend, there is nothing that can confirm it.

ALGO SOBRE LOS CONEJOS Y LOS HUEVOS DE PASCUA

Según se dice que los huevos y el conejo son fruto de una mezcla de historia religiosa y pagana. Por un lado, tras la muerte y resurrección de Jesús, durante la cuaresma se prohibía comer ciertos alimentos, que incluían los huevos. Cuando llegaba la Pascua, la gente celebra-ba comiendo huevos, para desquitarse del ayuno de los mismo. El conejo surge de una leyenda de que en la cueva de la que Jesucris-to Resucita, no solo estaba su cadáver, sino que también había un conejo. El conejo presencio la Resurrección de Jesucristo y quiso contárselo a las personas. Como no sabía hablar, se le ocurrió pintar huevos de colores y llevárselo a la gente para que comprendieran que había ocurrido un milagro. Pero como les comentaba al princi-

pio esto es un asunto de leyenda, no hay nada que lo pueda confirmar.

La historia del beato Pedro González

San Pablo tuvo una experiencia de conversión camino a Damas-co. Muchos años después, lo mismo sucedió con Pedro González, quien montó triunfalmente su caballo en la ciudad española de Astorga en el siglo XIII para ocupar un puesto importante en la

catedral. El animal tropezó y cayó, dejando a Peter en el barro y a los espectadores di-vertidos. Humillado, Peter reevaluó sus motivaciones —su obispo-tío le había asegu-rado el puesto en la catedral— y emprendió un nuevo camino. Se convirtió en sacer-dote dominico y demostró ser un predicador sumamente eficaz. Pasó gran parte de su tiempo como capellán de la corte e intentó ejercer una influencia positiva en el com-portamiento de los miembros de la corte. Después de que el rey Fernando III y sus tropas derrotaran a los moros en Córdoba, Pedro logró contener a los soldados para que no saquearan y persuadió al rey de que tratara a los moros derrotados con com-pasión. Después de retirarse de la corte, Peter dedicó el resto de su vida a predicar en el no-roeste de España. Habiendo desarrollado una misión especial para los marinos espa-ñoles y portugueses, es considerado su patrón. Peter González murió en 1246 y fue beatificado en 1741.
