Fifth Sunday of Lent John 3: 14-21

At that time among those who had come to celebrate the feast there were some Greeks; These, approaching Philip, the one from Bethsaida of Galilee, begged him: "Lord, we want to see Jesus." Felipe went to tell Andrés; and Andrew and Philip went to tell Jesus. Jesus replied: “The hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I tell you: if the grain of wheat does not fall to the ground and die, it remains infertile; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. He who loves himself loses himself, and he who hates himself in this world will save himself for eternal life. Whoever wants to serve me let him follow me, and where I am, my servant will also be there; whom he serves me, the Father will honor him. Now my soul is agitated and what will I say? Father, save me from this hour? But if for this I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name”. Then came a voice from heaven: "I have glorified it and will glorify it again." People who were there and heard it said it was thunder; others said that an angel had spoken to him. Jesus spoke up and said: “This voice did not come for me, but for you. Now the world is going to be judged; now the prince of this world is going to be cast out. And when I am elevated above the earth, I will draw everyone to me. “This he said, implying death that he was going to die.

The Greeks want to know Jesus. Christ does not go to them to make him known, but announces that they will know him in another way. Even the apostles, who have known him, Christ forbids them to speak of him because they were reluc-tant to accept that he was a paschal Messiah. So Christ also tells the Greeks that he will be manifested and known when he is raised on the cross, because then he will draw everyone to himself. To know Christ, a theoretical knowledge is not enough; an integral knowledge that passes through love is needed. To love means to act concretely, that is, to serve. Serving is not doing what I want, but following in his footsteps, living in communion with him, making ourselves simi-lar to him.

Quinto Domingo de Cuaresma Juan 3,14-21

En aquel tiempo entre los que habían venido a celebrar la fiesta había algunos griegos; estos, acercándose a Felipe, el de Betsaida de galilea, le rogaban: “Señor, queremos ver a Jesús”. Felipe fue a decírselo a Andrés; y Andrés y Felipe fueron a decírselo a Jesús. Jesús le contesto: “Ha llegado la hora de que sea glorificado el Hijo del hombre. En verdad, en ver-dad os digo: si el grano de trigo no cae en tierra y muere, queda infecundo; pero si muere, da mucho fruto. El que se ama a si mismo se pierde, y el que aborrece a sí mismo en este mundo se guardara para la vida eterna. El que quiera servirme, que me siga, y donde este yo, allí también estará mi servidor; a quien me sirva, el Padre lo honrara. Ahora mi alma esta agitada y, ¿Qué diré? ¿Padre, líbrame de esta hora? Pero si por esto he venido, para esta hora. Padre, glorifica tu nombre”. Entonces vino una voz del cielo: “Lo he glorificado y volveré a glorificarlo”. La gente que estaba allí y lo oyó decía que había sido un trueno; otros decían que le había hablado un ángel. Jesús tomo la palabra y dijo: “Esta voz no ha venido por mí, sino por vosotros. Ahora va a ser juzgado el mundo; ahora el príncipe de este mundo va a ser echado fuera. Y cuando yo sea elevado sobre la tierra, atraeré a todos hacia mí”. Esto lo decía dando a entender la muerte de que iba a morir.

Los griegos quieren conocer a Jesús. Cristo no va hacia ellos para dejarse conocer, sino que anuncia que lo conocerán de otra manera. Incluso a los apóstoles, que lo han conocido, cristo les prohíbe hablar de el porque se mostraron reacios a aceptar que era un Mesías pascual. Así que cristo dice también a los griegos que será manifestado y conocido cuando sea elevado en la cruz, porque entonces atraerá a todos hacia si. Para conocer a cristo, no basta un conocimiento teórico, se necesita un conocimiento integro que pasa a través del amor. Amar significa actuar concretamente, es decir, servir. Ser-vir no es hacer lo que yo quiero, sino seguir sus pasos, vivir en comunión con él, haciéndonos semejantes a él.

The Story of the Annunciation of the Lord The feast of the Annunciation, now recognized as a solemnity, was first celebrated in the fourth or fifth century. Its central focus is the Incarnation: God has become one of us. From all eternity God had decided that the Second Person of the Blessed Trin-ity should become human. Now, as Luke 1:26-38 tells us, the decision is being real-ized. The God-Man embraces all humanity, indeed all creation, to bring it to God in one great act of love. Because human beings have rejected God, Jesus will accept a

life of suffering and an agonizing death: “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13). Mary has an important role to play in God’s plan. From all eternity, God destined her to be the mother of Jesus and closely related to him in the creation and redemption of the world. We could say that God’s decrees of creation and redemption are joined in the decree of Incarnation. Because Mary is God’s instrument in the Incarnation, she has a role to play with Jesus in creation and redemption. It is a God-given role. It is God’s grace from beginning to end. Mary becomes the eminent figure she is only by God’s grace. She is the empty space where God could act. Everything she is she owes to the Trinity. Mary is the virgin-mother who fulfills Isaiah 7:14 in a way that Isaiah could not have imagined. She is united with her son in carrying out the will of God (Psalm 40:8-9; Hebrews 10:7-9; Luke 1:38). Together with Jesus, the privileged and graced Mary is the link between heaven and earth. She is the human being who best, after Jesus, exemplifies the pos-sibilities of human existence. She received into her lowliness the infinite love of God. She shows how an ordi-nary human being can reflect God in the ordinary circumstances of life. She exemplifies what the Church and every member of the Church is meant to become. She is the ultimate product of the creative and redemptive power of God. She manifests what the Incarnation is meant to accomplish for all of us.

Reflection Sometimes spiritual writers are accused of putting Mary on a pedestal and thereby, discouraging ordinary hu-mans from imitating her. Perhaps such an observation is misguided. God did put Mary on a pedestal and has put all human beings on a pedestal. We have scarcely begun to realize the magnificence of divine grace, the wonder of God’s freely given love. The marvel of Mary—even in the midst of her very ordinary life—is God’s shout to us to wake up to the marvelous creatures that we all are by divine design.

La historia de la anunciación del Señor La fiesta de la Anunciación, ahora reconocida como solemnidad, se celebró por pri-mera vez en el siglo IV o V. Su enfoque central es la Encarnación: Dios se ha conver-tido en uno de nosotros. Desde toda la eternidad, Dios había decidido que la Segun-da Persona de la Santísima Trinidad se hiciera humana. do a que los seres humanos han rechazado a Dios, Jesús aceptará una vida de sufrimiento y una muerte agoni-zante: "Nadie tiene mayor amor que este, dar la vida por los amigos" (Juan 15:13). María tiene un papel im-portante que desempeñar en el plan de Dios. Desde toda la eternidad, Dios la destinó a ser la madre de Jesús y estar estrechamente relacionada con él en la creación y redención del mundo. Podríamos decir que los decre-tos de Dios de creación y redención están unidos al decreto de Encarnación. Debido a que María es el instru-mento de Dios en la Encarnación, tiene un papel que desempeñar con Jesús en la creación y la redención. Es un papel dado por Dios. Es la gracia de Dios de principio a fin. María se convierte en la figura eminente que es solo por la gracia de Dios. Ella es el espacio vacío donde Dios podría actuar. Todo lo que es se lo debe a la Tri-nidad. María es la virgen-madre que cumple Isaías 7:14 de una manera que Isaías no podría haber imaginado. Ella está unida a su hijo para llevar a cabo la voluntad de Dios (Salmo 40: 8-9; Hebreos 10: 7-9; Lucas 1:38). Junto con Jesús, la privilegiada y agraciada María es el vínculo entre el cielo y la tierra. Ella es el ser humano que mejor ejemplifica, después de Jesús, las posibilidades de la existencia humana. Recibió en su humildad el amor infinito de Dios. Ella muestra cómo un ser humano común puede reflejar a Dios en las circunstancias ordinarias de la vida. Reflexión A veces, se acusa a los escritores espirituales de poner a María en un pedestal y, por lo tanto, desanimar a los humanos comunes de imitarla. Quizás tal observación esté equivocada. Dios puso a María en un pedestal y ha puesto a todos los seres humanos en un pedestal. Apenas hemos empezado a darnos cuenta de la magnificen-cia de la gracia divina, la maravilla del amor gratuito de Dios. La maravilla de María, incluso en medio de su vida muy ordinaria, es el grito de Dios para que nos despertemos a las maravillosas criaturas que todos somos por designio divino.
