Urgent Need in Passaic “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did it for me.” Matthew 25:40 We have been informed that some Passaic resi-dents are experiencing a lack of food. After con-sultation a decision was made to offer our food collection for the month of September to this emergency. St. Mary’s parishioners and friends have been very loyal to our food collections. Fr. English has been one of our organizations which we support. The Corpus Christi Food Collection was very successful. We are aware that many or-ganizations help Fr. English out. However, Pas-saic needs help. On September 26th and 27th our food collections will go to this emergency. This urgency is for everyone that can help out. Enton-ces, si recibe una carta del Obispo Sweeney en la próxima semana pidiéndole que apoye la Apela-ción de Ministerios Diocesanos, sepa que es el nuevo nombre de la Apelación Anual. Si bien el nombre ha cambiado, el trabajo de la Campaña de Ministerios Diocesanos continuará enfocán-dose en los ministerios importantes que siempre ha tenido y continuará sirviendo a miles de per-sonas en toda nuestra Diócesis. ¡Gracias por tu apoyo!

Necesidad urgente en Passaic

San Mateo 25:40 Se nos ha informado que algunos residentes de Passaic están experimentando escasez de ali-mentos. Después de la consulta se tomó la deci-sión de ofrecer nuestra recolección de alimentos para el mes de septiembre a esta emergencia. Los feligreses y amigos de St. Mary han sido muy leales a nuestras colecciones de alimentos. Fr. English Center ha sido una de nuestras or-ganizaciones a las que apoyamos. La colección de alimentos de Corpus Christi tuvo mucho éxi-to. Somos conscientes de que muchas organiza-ciones ayudan al P. Inglés fuera. Sin embargo, Passaic necesita ayuda. The Story of the Exaltation of the

Holy Cross Early in the fourth century, Saint Hele-na, mother of the Roman Emperor Con-stantine, went to Jerusalem in search of the holy places of Christ’s life. She razed the second-century Temple of Aphrodite, which tradition held was built over the Savior’s tomb, and her son built the Ba-silica of the Holy Sepulcher on that spot. During the excavation, workers found

three crosses. Legend has it that the one on which Jesus died was identified when its touch healed a dying woman. The cross immediately became an object of veneration. At a Good Friday celebration in Jerusalem toward the end of the fourth century, according to an eyewitness, the wood was taken out of its silver container and placed on a table together with the inscrip-tion Pilate ordered placed above Jesus’ head: Then “all the people pass through one by one; all of them bow down, touching the cross and the in-scription, first with their foreheads, then with their eyes; and, after kissing the cross, they move on.” To this day, the Eastern Churches, Catholic and Orthodox alike, celebrate the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on the Septem-ber anniversary of the basilica’s dedication. The feast entered the Western calendar in the seventh century after Emperor Heraclius recovered the cross from the Persians, who had carried it off in 614, 15 years earlier. Ac-cording to the story, the emperor intended to carry the cross back into Je-rusalem himself, but was unable to move forward until he took off his im-perial garb and became a barefoot pilgrim.

Reflection The cross is today the universal image of Christian belief. Countless gener-ations of artists have turned it into a thing of beauty to be carried in pro-cession or worn as jewelry. To the eyes of the first Christians, it had no beauty. It stood outside too many city walls, decorated only with decaying corpses, as a threat to anyone who defied Rome’s authority—including Christians who refused sacrifice to Roman gods. Although believers spoke of the cross as the instrument of salvation, it seldom appeared in Christian art unless disguised as an anchor or the Chi-Rho until after Constantine’s edict of toleration.

Santa Cruz A principios del siglo IV, Santa Elena, ma-dre del emperador romano Constantino, fue a Jerusalén en busca de los lugares santos de la vida de Cristo. Ella arrasó el Templo de Afrodita del siglo II, que según la tradi-ción se construyó sobre la tumba del Salva-dor, y su hijo construyó la Basílica del Santo Sepulcro en ese lugar. Reflexión La cruz es hoy la imagen universal de la fe cristiana. Innumerables generaciones de artistas lo han convertido en un objeto hermoso para llevarlo en procesión o llevarlo como joyería. A los ojos de los primeros cristianos, no tenía belleza.
