Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson

Winter 2018 was seemingly extra long weatherwise, and spring snowstorms only served to prolong the pain. In many warm hearts, especially those of gar-deners and flower lovers, the call to be outdoors planting seeds, bulbs or bushes was especially ur-gent.

When Jesus walked here on earth among us in His human nature, His loving eyes and keen perception saw such planting going on for more than thirty sea-sons. Ever conscious of His saving mission and the need to teach people about the restorative plan of His heavenly Father, and being an excellent teacher, He used what was right in front of Him and His au-dience as starting points for comparison.

It was, in His day, a largely agricultural society. So he turned to seeds, crops, plants, trees and flowers to exemplify features of the higher ground of His king-dom. He insisted that it was something that started small and looked insignificant but grew by design into something great. It flourished in the “rich soil” of open hearts and minds. Such is still true for us who hear His descriptions these many centuries lat-er.

El invierno de 2018 era aparentemente demasi-ado largo a la intemperie, y las tormentas de nieve de primavera solo servían para prolon-gar el dolor. En muchos corazones cálidos, es-pecialmente los de los jardineros y amantes de las flores, la llamada a estar al aire libre plan-tando semillas, bulbos o arbustos era especial-mente urgente.

Cuando Jesús caminó aquí en la tierra entre nosotros en su naturaleza humana, sus amo-rosos ojos y aguda percepción vieron tal siem-bra durante más de treinta temporadas. Siem-pre consciente de su misión salvadora y de la necesidad de enseñarle a la gente sobre el plan restaurador de su Padre celestial, y de ser un excelente maestro, usó lo que estaba justo en frente de él y su audiencia como puntos de par-tida para comparar.

Fue, en su época, una sociedad en gran parte agrícola. Así que recurrió a semillas, cultivos, plantas, árboles y flores para ejemplificar las características de la tierra más elevada de Su reino. Insistió en que era algo que comenzó pequeño y parecía insignificante, pero creció por diseño en algo grandioso. Floreció en el "suelo rico" de corazones y mentes abiertos. Tal es todavía cierto para nosotros que escu-chamos Sus descripciones estos muchos siglos después.

"Señor Jesús, lléname con tu Espíritu San-to y transfórmame en la santidad de Cris-to que deseas. Aumenta mi celo por tu reino e infúndeme un santo deseo de vivir para tu mayor gloria".

La Violencia contra las Mujeres; Problema Social, Político y Eclesial

El cuerpo de la mujer… nos recuerda la belleza y la armonía del cuerpo que Dios ha dado a la mujer, pero también las dolorosas heridas infligidas, a veces con violencia brutal, por el hecho de ser mujeres. Símbolo de la vida, el cuerpo femenino es, por desgracia, no pocas veces, atacado y desfigurado por aquellos deberían ser custodies y compañeros en la vida. Las muchas formas de esclavitud, de mercantilización, de mutilación del cuerpo de las mujeres, nos llevan a comprome-ternos a trabajar para acabar con esta forma de degradación que lo reduce a un mero objeto. Vivimos en sociedades que proclaman la igualdad, en las que la igualdad sexual debería ser un valor cultural cada ves más aceptado, pero el uso creciente de la violencia contra las mujeres lo desmiente, son igualitarias formal o parcialmente, pues la cultura de la dominación permanece junto a la desigualdad social. Aunque muchas personas ven esta violencia como una anomalía en una sociedad de iguales, lo que ponen de relieve es que la sociedad no es de iguales, y que el pa-triarcado sigue recurriendo a ella como mecanismo de sometimiento de las mujeres.

Esa violencia que descansa en la desigualdad sexual, una de las desigualdades más antiguas y universales, no solo persiste como manifiestan los datos ( en 2017 al menos 46 mujeres han sido asesinadas, a las que hay que añadir 8 menores), si no que sigue costando visibilizarla, identifi-carla como injusticia contra las mujeres, descubrir sus raíces… Una violencia machista que ocu-rre de puertas a adentro y en nuestra cultura supone una vergüenza mayor para las mujeres que para los maltratadores, que además tienen que luchar contra una tendencia histórica que niega la violencia contra las mujeres, que desconfía de la palabra de las mujeres cuando la denuncian.

Hechos recientes como el juicio a cinco hombres (La Manada) acusados de violar a una joven en Sanfermines o la denuncia de los abusos sexuales de un famoso productor de Hollywood durante casi tres décadas, sirven para sacar a la luz el problema de la violencia sexual en sus diversas manifestaciones (violencia de género –ejercida por varones sobre sus parejas o ex-parejas como manifestación de la discriminación, la situación de desigualdad y las relaciones de poder de los hombres sobre las mujeres-, el acoso sexual, la violación, la trata de blancas…) y están dando lu-gar a una importante denuncia social.

Por ello no podemos permanecer como espectadores ante esta realidad de violencia contra las mujeres, menos aún si tenemos en cuenta que se está dando una reacción contra los logros en fa-vor de la igualdad, y que trata de culpabilizar a las propias mujeres de la violencia que sufren. Así defienden que los datos estadísticos sobre la violencia contra las mujeres son falsos y las ci-fras están hinchadas por denuncias falsas; que la igualdad sexual ya es un hecho y el compromi-so y la lucha por defenderla son cosas del pasado; que esa igualdad empobrece y hace más infeli-ces a las mujeres, por lo que deberían revertirse derechos y libertades conseguidos…

Esta violencia contra las mujeres es un problema social grave y hemos de afrontarla para avan-zar en una sociedad reflejo de la paternidad de Dios, en quien nos reconocemos hijas e hijos sin distinción. Violencia de la que la Biblia también se hace eco, rompiendo la igualdad y unidad en la diversidad de Génesis 1,26-28 donde hombre y mujer son creados a imagen de Dios para una comunidad plena y de igualdad, con una relación directa con Él, compartiendo conjuntamente las responsabilidades –engendrar y criar a los hijos, tener dominio sobre el orden creado, etc.

Violence against Women; Social, Political and Ecclesial Problem

The body of the woman ... reminds us of the beauty and harmony of the body that God has giv-en to the woman, but also the painful inflicted wounds, sometimes with brutal violence, due to the fact of just being women. Symbol of life, the female body is, unfortunately, attacked and dis-figured by those who should protect them and be companions in life. The many forms of slav-ery, women trafficking, of mutilation of women's bodies, lead us to commit to ourselves and work to put an end to this form of degradation that reduces it to a mere object. (Pope Francis, February 7, 2015)

We live in societies that proclaim equality, in which sexual equality should be a cultural value increasingly accepted, but the growing use of violence against women refuses it, are formally or partially egalitarian, as the culture of domination remains next to social inequality. Alt-hough many people see this violence as an anomaly in a society of equals, what they highlight is that society is not equal, and that patriarchy continues as a mechanism for subduing women.

That violence that rests on sexual inequality, one of the oldest and most universal inequalities, not only persists as the data shows (in 2017 at least 46 women have been murdered, to which 8 minors must be added), but it continues to be visible, to identify it as injustice against women, to discover its roots …. Violence that happens inside our homes, in our culture there is a great-er shame for women than for abusers, who also have to fight against a historical tendency that denies violence against women, Women feel unsecure and skeptical they denounce it to author-ities.

Recent events such as the trial of five men (La Manada) accused of raping a young woman in Sanfermines or the accusation of the sexual abuse from a famous Hollywood producer for al-most three decades, are examples of the problems of sexual violence in its various manifesta-tions (gender-based violence - exercised by males over their partners or ex-partners as a mani-festation of discrimination, the situation of inequality and the power relations of men over women - sexual harassment, rape, human trafficking ...) and are giving rise to an important social complaint.

Therefore, we can not remain as spectators in the face of this reality of violence against women, even less if we bear in mind that there is a reaction against the achievements in favor of equali-ty, and that it tries to blame women themselves for the violence that they suffer. Even if they defend the statistical data on violence against women and are in denial, and think that there are just false accusations; sexual equality is already a fact and commitment and the struggle to defend it are things of the past; that equality impoverishes and makes women more unhap-py, so that rights and freedoms achieved should be reversed ...

This violence against women is a serious social problem and we must face in order to advance in a society, that would reflects the fatherhood of God, in whom we recognize ourselves as chil-dren without distinction. violence of which the Bible also echoes, breaking the equality and uni-ty in the diversity of Genesis 1, 26-28 where man and woman are created in the image of God for a full and equal community, with a direct relationship with Him , jointly sharing the respon-sibilities -getting and raising the children, having control over the order created, etc.-.
