Important Reminder The 2019 Lenten season begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6, with Easter Sunday on April 21. Ash Wednesday is one of the important holy days in the liturgical calendar. The practice includes the wearing of ashes on the forehead. The ashes symbolizes the dust from which God made us. Ash Wednesday opens Lent, a season of fasting and prayer. During Lent, we are asked to devote ourselves to seeking the Lord in prayer and reading Scripture, to service by giving alms, and to sacrifice self control through fasting. Recordatorio importante

La temporada de Cuaresma de 2019 comienza el miércoles de ceniza, el 6 de marzo, y el domingo de Pascua, el 21 de abril. El Miércoles de Ceniza es uno de los días santos importantes en el calendario litúrgico. La práctica incluye el uso de cenizas en la frente. Las cenizas simbolizan el polvo del cual Dios nos hizo. El Miércoles de Ceniza abre la Cuaresma, un tiempo de ayuno y oración. Durante la Cuaresma, se nos pide que nos dedicemos a buscar al Señor en oración y leyendo las Escrituras, a servir dando limosnas y a sacrificar el autocontrol a través del ayuno. Our Lady of Lourdes On February 11 of each year, the Church holds the liturgical memory of Our Lady of Lourdes. The Church celebrates with this feast the first apparition of the Virgin Mary to Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes, France, in the year of 1858. The apparition of Our Lady of Lourdes is one of the apparitions that have been approved by the Church. The apparitions of the Virgin Mary in Lourdes were 18 and occurred from February

11 to July 16 of that year. On March 25, during her sixteenth apparition, the Virgin Mary revealed her name to the 14-year-old seer. She presented herself as the Immaculate Conception. The dogma of the Immaculate Conception had just been declared by Pope Pius IX on December 8, 1854. It was practically impossible for Bernadette to know of this event that had taken place in Rome. The apparition of Virgin Mary in Lourdes is a call to conversion, but also a sign of hope and salvation. One of the gifts of the Virgin in this place is a water spring. On February 25, during her ninth apparition, the Virgin asked Bernadette to drink water from a source. She thought she should go to the river, but the Virgin pointed to her a place where Bernadette would dig to find a water spring from which, to this day, people drink to heal their maladies. Health is a sign of the Kingdom of God and the Virgin Mary in Lourdes left his permanent sign of health and salvation, which sprung forth by the will of the Immaculate Mother of the Savior of the world. Mary brings nonstop health to her children; firstly, by giving birth to Jesus, whose name means God saves. Secondly, by offering living water that God wants to give to the world so that it may heal. Mary collaborates eternally with her son Jesus for the good of humankind. As she did in Lourdes, she teaches, joins in prayer, calls to conversion, and gives the gift of health. When Mary presented herself as the Immaculate Conception, she reminds her children that the path to everlasting happiness and eternal health is the path of good vanquishing evil. She shows us how to crush the serpent’s head. With baptismal waters, we are reborn in grace and we are released from the original sin. Water and health are related in Lourdes. Water heals us from sin and shows us the great model that will take us to heaven. This model is Mary in her title of the Immaculate Conception. When Mary promises Bernadette happiness in Heaven, she also holds that promise to all of us who want to hear her words and counsel. Our Lady of Lourdes is considered by the Church as the patron saint of bodily ills. The place of her apparition is visited by thousands of ill pilgrims every year and many of them are granted their health back.

Nuestra Señora de Lourdes El 11 de febrero de cada año, la Iglesia guarda la memoria litúrgica de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes. La Iglesia celebra con esta fiesta la primera aparición de la Virgen María a Bernadette Soubirous en Lourdes, Francia, en el año de 1858. La aparición de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes es una de las apariciones aprobadas por la Iglesia. Las apariciones de la Virgen María en Lourdes fueron 18 y ocurrieron del 11 de febrero al 16 de julio de ese año. El 25 de marzo, durante su

decimosexta aparición, la Virgen María reveló su nombre a la vidente de 14 años. Ella se presentó como la Inmaculada Concepción. El Papa Pío IX acababa de declarar el dogma de la Inmaculada Concepción el 8 de diciembre de 1854. Era prácticamente imposible para Bernadette saber de este evento que había tenido lugar en Roma.
