Our Lady of the Bush Tradition tells of a shepherd who was grazing his flocks in Por-tugal, when he heard a sweet voice calling him. He was attracted by a burning bush where, in the midst of the flames, he saw a statue of the Virgin Mary. Our Lady gave him two messages, one for him and one for the Bishop of Évora. The shepherd took the image, carried it to the city and told the bishop what happened; then he returned to the field and made a chapel for the statue.

Finally, he sold everything he had, built a small shrine there and began to make public prayers to Mary, which she has asked him to do. Many people joined the devotions in the simple chapel and it soon became necessary to build a larger space. Several miracles, together with the impetus of the pil-grimages, led the bishop to build a church and a monastery there, which were placed under the care of the monks of St. Jerome. The history of La Virgen del Arbusto (The Virgin of the Bush) is also linked to the Crusades, because it is said that King Alfonso V of Aragon, in gratitude after his vic-tory, contributed to enrich and expand the shrine to Our Lady.

Nuestra Señora del Arbusto Cuenta la tradición que un pastor apacentaba sus rebaños en Portugal, cuando escuchó una dulce voz que lo llamaba. Este se sintió atraído por una zarza ardiendo donde, en medio de las llamas, vio una estatua de la Virgen María. Nuestra Señora le dio dos mensajes, uno para él y otro para el obispo de Évo-ra. El pastor tomó la imagen, la llevó a la ciudad y le contó al obispo lo sucedido; luego regresó al campo y le hizo una er-

mita a la estatua. Finalmente, vendió todo lo que tenía, construyó un pequeño santuario allí y comenzó a hacer las oraciones públicas a María, que ella le había pedido que hiciera. Muchas personas se sumaron a las devociones en la sencilla capilla y pronto se hizo necesaria la construc-ción de un espacio más grande. Varios milagros unidos al impulse de las peregrinaciones llevaron al obispo a construir una iglesia y un mon-asterio en ese lugar, que fueron puestos bajo el cuidado de los monjes de SanJerónimo. La historia de La Virgen del Arbusto está ligada también a las cruzadas, pues se dice que el rey Alfonso V de Aragón, en grati-tude tras su victoria, contribuyó a enriquecer y difundir el santuario a Nuestra Señora.
