The Holy Family "And your Bethlehem, land of Judah, you are by no means the least among the illustrious cities of Judah, for a chief will come out of you, who will be the shepherd of my people, Israel." All of us, without exception, live by certain prejudices: we distrust different people, we are afraid of strangers. Some of the first Christians had something similar: they had fears, even fears of people, who were just integrating into their communities, and they had totally differ-ent, although not necessarily wrong, customs

from those they had. For this reason, Matthew sees the need to point out that the birth of Jesus causes closeness between people and generates a basic availability for coexistence, not despite differences, but thanks to them. For this, Matthew indicates, on the one hand, that Jesus manifests himself to magi (vv.1-2); according to the old mentality, to some people who were related to magic or astrology, even sorcery; they were therefore strange people, even from the Jewish per-spective, bad people. On the other, the Gospel affirms that they “came from the East” (v.1); this general indication refers to an imprecise or very distant place; these people came from remote lands, and therefore could well be considered impure and despicable. These magi represented people different from the Jews who, to a large ex-tent, made up the communities to which Mater initially addressed; with customs dif-ferent from hers and, probably, with ways of thinking and behaving, contrary to what her discipleship asked for. Nevertheless, the presence of Jesus serves as a worthy meeting point for respectful relationships and a generous exchange. What prejudices do we have towards those who think, believe or act differently from us? In what way could the birth of Jesus, just celebrated, help us grow in closeness and coexistence? How could our interpersonal relationships be in this year that we have begun to build a society in which peace and reconciliation are present?

Reflection of the Most Holy Name of Jesus Jesus died and rose for the sake of all people. No one can trade-mark or copyright Jesus’ name. Jesus is the Son of God and son of Mary. Everything that exists was created in and through the Son of God (see Colossians 1:15-20). The name of Jesus is debased if any Christian uses it as justification for berating non-Christians. Jesus reminds us that because we are all related to him we are, therefore, all related to one another.

La Sagrada Familia “Y tu Belén, tierra de Judá, no eres en manera alguna la menor entre las ciudades ilustre de Judá, pues de ti saldrá un jefe, que será el pastor de mi pueblo, Israel”. Todos, sin excepción, vivimos de ciertos pre-juicios: desconfiamos de los diferentes, nos dan miedo los extraños. A algunos de los pri-meros cristianos les pasaba algo semejante: tenían temores, incluso miedos ante las perso-nas, que recién se estaban integrando a sus co-munidades, y llevaban costumbres totalmente diferentes, aunque no necesariamente equivo-

cada, a las que ellos tenían. Por esto, Mateo se ve en la necesidad de señalar que el na-cimiento de Jesús provoca cercanía entre las personas y genera una disponibilidad bá-sica para la convivencia, no a pesar de las diferencias, sino gracias a ellas. Para esto Mateo indica, por un lado, que Jesús se manifiesta a unos magos (vv.1-2); según la mentalidad antigua, a unas personas que estaban en relación con la magia o la astrología, incluso con la hechicería; eran por tanto, gente extraña, incluso desde la perspectiva judía, personas malas. Por otro, el evangelio afirma que “procedían de Oriente” (v.1); esta indicación general refieren un lugar impreciso o muy lejano; aque-llas personas procedían de tierras remotas, y por tanto bien podrían ser consideradas impuras y despreciables. Estos magos representaban a gente diferente a los judíos que, en gran parte, conformaban las comunidades a la que inicialmente Mater se diri-gía; con costumbres diferentes a las suyas y, probablemente, con maneras de pensar y de comportase, contrarias a lo que pedía el discipulado. No obstante, la presencia de Jesús sirve de punto de encuentro digno para relaciones respetuosas y un intercambio generoso. ¿Qué prejuicios tenemos ante quienes piensan, creen a actúan de manera diferente a nosotros? ¿De qué manera el nacimiento de Jesús, recién celebrado, podría ayudarnos a crecer en la cercanía y convivencia? ¿Cómo podrían ser nuestras relaciones interper-sonales en este año que hemos iniciado para construir una sociedad en la que hagan presentes la paz y la reconciliación?

Reflexion del Santísimo Nombre de Jesús Jesús murió y resucitó por el bien de todas las personas. Nadie puede registrar el nombre de Jesús como marca registrada o copyright. Jesús es el Hijo de Dios e hijo de María. Todo lo que existe fue creado en y a través del Hijo de Dios (ver Colosenses 1: 15-20). El nombre de Jesús se degrada si algún cristiano lo usa como justificación para reprender a los no cristianos. Jesús nos recuerda que debido a que todos estamos relacionados con él, todos estamos relacionados entre sí.
