  • So much is different this Christmas season, yet the focus and dedication of our parish ministries remains constant – as people in need throughout our community turn to St. Mary's Parish for warm meals, comfort, and shelter during the holidays, we must be there for them … which is why we are reaching out to our parishioners. Your generous online donations are needed now to help sustain Christmas ministries that reflect the promise of God’s love. The upheaval and distress caused by COVID-19 give these ministries added importance, and your kindness will help families all around us. We are the body of Christ. Please help to continue our mission by maintaining your financial contribution to our parish. You can do this in several ways: Donate trough FaithDirect by logging on to

    www.faithdirect.net or call 866.507.8757. St. Mary's Code is NJ23.

Text a one time donation by texting the dollar amount to 973-500-6123.

     Mail in your donation.

Thank you for your continued support of our parish

    family.

God Bless You, Fr. Frank J Critch

Homebound Connections Ministry If you or someone you know is homebound and would like a visit and receive Eucharist, please contact our Parish Office at 973-835-0374 so we can set up a time. Fr John Alderson will be there to brighten your day!

On the feast of the Epiphany, we will chalk the doors of St. Mary's Church and invite God to bless everyone who comes into our Church building. We invite you to adopt this custom in your family. The family gathers and chalks their doorway to ask God’s blessing on their home and on those who live in or visit the home. It is an invitation for Jesus to be a daily guest in our home, our comings and goings, our conversations, our work and play, our joys and sorrows. A traditional way of doing this is to use chalk to write above the home’s entrance, 20 + C + M + B + 21. The letters C, M, B have two meanings. They are the initials of the traditional names of the three magi: Caspar, Mel-chior, and Balthazar. They also abbreviate the Latin words Christus mansionem benedicat, “May Christ bless the house.” The “+” signs represent the cross and 2021 is the year.

We will bless chalk and mark our doorways on January 3rd and invite you to take a piece and do the same at your home.

Instructions for Blessing the Home Using the blessed chalk mark the lintel of your front door (or front porch step) as follows:

    20 + C + M + B + 2021 while saying:

The three Wise Men, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar followed the star of God’s Son who became human two thousand and twenty years ago. May Christ bless our home and remain with us throughout the new year. Amen.

Then offer the following prayer: Visit, O blessed Lord, this home with the gladness of your presence. Bless all who live or visit here with the gift of your love; and grant that we may manifest your love to each other and to all whose lives we touch. May we grow in grace and in the knowledge and love of you; guide, comfort, and strengthen us in peace, O Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen

“Chalking the door” is a way to celebrate and literally

mark the occasion of the Epiphany and God’s blessing

of our lives and home. With time the chalk will fade. As

it does we let the meaning of the symbols written sink

into the depths of our heart and be manifest in our words

and actions the Latin words, Christus mansionem bene-dictat, “May Christ bless the house.

Thank you for all you do for St. Mary’s.

Pope Francis in his encyclical Fratelli Tutti, as he reflected on the Parable of the Good Samaritan, stated the following: “Each day offers us a new opportunity, a new possibility…We have the space we need for co-responsibility in creating and putting into place new processes and changes. Let us take an active part in renewing and supporting our troubled societies. Today we have a great opportunity to express our innate sense of fraternity, to be Good Samaritans who bear the pain of other people’s troubles rather than fermenting greater hatred and resentment. Like the chance traveler in the parable, we need only have a pure and simple desire to be a people, a community, constant and tireless in the effort to include, integrate and lift up the fallen. We may often find ourselves succumbing to the mentality of the violent, the blindly ambitious, those who spread mistrust and lies… For our part, let us foster what is good and place ourselves at its service.” (Fratelli Tutti 77) This past year may have led us to some dark places: the pandemic and the fear that has engulfed us; the election and the abyss of divisiveness within our country; racial tensions igniting the call for justice and equality; fire and hurricanes destroying peoples lives and homes; unemployment and homelessness; the lack of resources for the poorest of the poor within our country and our world; the displacements and violence in countries causing a refugee crisis as people search for shelter and stability. It seems that doubt and fear has gripped our lives, our communities, our faith and our hearts. Hopefully, we realize God’s love guides us through the chaos of our lives to a new day, a new horizon, a new way of seeing life. God does not punish us and does not push us into chaos, God leads us out of it. We need to trust God more fully and renew hope within our hearts, within our families, within our communities and within our Church. Hopefully and prayerfully, as we begin to encounter 2021 and reflect on 2020, we can find gratitude and count our blessings even during fear and chaos. May we have the faith to give thanks to God for the presence of mystery, surprise, joy, love and reconciliation in our lives. Our God is always near and ready to lift up each one of us. May we all continue to feel this presence in prayer, in family, friends and strangers alike. Being here at St. Mary’s with you, with the friars and with the staff continues to be a blessing each day. I am grateful to be surrounded by visionaries who see the parish as ministry, as a community moving forward. This gives me hope. This year, we will see a rebirth as we repurpose the school into an Academy for pre-school children and their families. We can invest in one of our most valuable resources, our children. With the hiatus of this pandemic, it has given us time to reflect on the ministries here at St. Mary’s. We will review, reflect and build on the strength of the past as we expand our ministries and create new opportunities in serving the needs of this amazing and gifted community. My dear friends, may we as Church, resolve to embrace these opportunities and changes with an open heart, giving thanks for the past and openness to all the future holds. Let us resolve to ponder and treasure our life’s journey within our hearts, our families, our Church, and our communities. Like the Christ child who we celebrate, let us resolve to live in wonder, humility, and trust with all our brothers and sisters. Most of all as we begin 2021 let us resolve to live in possibility, and in hope. “Let us foster what is good and place ourselves at its service.” (Pope Francis) Happy New Year, Blessings and Peace, Fr. Frank

    Food Pantry Update

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We have just completed our last distribution for 2020. We managed to do so despite being snowed out last Wednesday! We rescheduled the distribution to Sunday in order to ensure the food and gift cards got to about a third of our typical number of monthly families! We know that this season has been so very different given the pandemic. It has also been different in positive ways, too. Because of the enormous outpouring of support from our parishioners, the Pompton Lakes Elks, the children and families of the religious education program, Cub Scout Pack 38, Boy Scout Troop 388, the Pompton Lakes First Aid Squad - and many others - we were able to increase the number of gift cards given to each family. We’ve received so much donated food that we are now storing some at the parish complex. The Prayer Shawl Ministry also contributed their fine works to us for distribution! Beautiful, warm and filled with love…each and every one of them! All in all, our shoppers were very happy with the food, gift cards and shawls this month! At this Christmas season, I am so grateful to all of you for what we accomplished in 2020. For your effort before the pandemic while in full operation. And since the pandemic, for your prayers, donations and, to the degree possible, your “in-person” help with our twice-modified distribution method. (A very special shout-out to the parish office - Fr. Frank, Anne, Keith and Phil, and everyone there behind the scenes - for their support throughout the year and this

6th grade Service Project. “Adopt a Senior”

During this time our nursing home seniors are isolated and feel lost and unloved.

Our 6th graders are putting together a beautiful Red gift bag filled cozy socks, peppermint lotion, candy cane flavored Chapstick.

They have taken the time to write a personal note to their senior which will be in the bag as well.

A group of the children will accompany me to the Lak-eview Nursing Home and compliance with social dis-tance will present the presents to the seniors .

    Love, Giving, Merry Christmas !!

News from the Vatican: Congregation for the Doctrine

of the Faith It is morally acceptable to receive Covid-19 vaccines that have used cell lines from aborted fetuses in their research and producon process. Due to the situaon of the ongoing pandemic, “all vaccinaons recognized as clinically safe and effecve can be used in good conscience with the certain knowledge that the use of such vaccines does not constute formal cooperaon with the aboron from which the cells used in producon of the vaccines derive.” The Vacan’s Congregaon for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) made these statements in a note signed by the Prefect, Cardinal Luis Ladaria, and the Secretary, Archbishop Giacomo Morandi. The text was explicitly approved by Pope Francis on 17 December.
