THE SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 10/11 2018

From your Deacon ... The peace of Christ be with you all! I hope you have your

Christmas decorations put away. In case you haven’t been follow-

ing your liturgical calendar closely, this Wednesday is Ash

Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. I bet you thought it was only

Valentine’s Day! Add to that, Easter is on April 1 this year, April

Fools Day to some. Apparently, it’s been 83 years since we’ve ex-

perienced this chronological clash of cultural calendars (I just love

alliterations!).

My first thought when considering that calendrical coincidence

(OK. I’ll stop) was could any two culturally significant days be more

disparate? Valentine’s Day is, in many ways, a day of excessive con-

sumerism as opposed to Ash Wednesday, a day of penitential

self-denial. On the other hand, these two days share a common

root emotion – Love. One is a celebration of our human love and

self-sacrifice for our beloved while the other celebrates the spiritual

love and self-sacrifice our Lord and Redeemer.

So now is a good time to reflect on how you and your

family are going to make Lent 2018 a meaningful time of

preparation and contemplation of Our Lord’s supreme sacrifice for

the redemption of our souls and his glorious resurrection.

Keeping in mind the common theme of Ash Wednesday and

Valentine’s Day is a good place to start. Those in the marketing,

floral, and greeting card industries would have us believe that

romantic love is the “hallmark” of the day. But more significantly,

it is a day for us to celebrate our unselfish love for one another –

romantic or otherwise. Isn’t this what Lent is all about, as well?

As Christians, our highest calling is to love each other as Christ

loves us. Lent is a time for us to work toward the perfection of our

personal Christianity. With the convergence of Ash Wednesday

and Valentine’s Day comes an opportunity to have a family

conversation about the meaning of love – love of our families and

love of neighbor – and how we can learn to love each other better.

Remember the definition of love: To will the good of the other.

The prefect example of the perfect love: The death of Jesus on the

cross for the forgiveness of our sins.

So far, I’ve used this space to focus on Ash Wednesday.

Needless to say, (and yet he’s going to say it anyway!), Lent is not

one day but 40 days. Keeping the spirit of Lent alive in our fami-

lies for 40 days is no insignificant challenge. There are a

plethora of suggestions for how to increase the holiness of the

season of Lent; permit me to share a couple of my favorites.

We decorate our homes for many cultural celebrations:

Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Halloween and many others. Why not

decorate your home for Lent? Visual clues around the house will

help to remind you of the season. In the same vein as a Christmas

tree, a cactus or grouping of succulents with prickly thorns

displayed on your kitchen table will serve to remind your family of

the suffering of Jesus and his time in the desert.

Another meaningful tradition is the Sacrifice Bean jar. This is es-

pecially applicable to families who give up candy for Lent. Fill a

box with large died beans and place it next to a jar decorated with a

purple ribbon. Each time a family member says or does a kindness,

have him or her place a bean in the jar.

Before retiring on Holy Saturday, the dried beans are replaced with

colorful jellybeans. Upon rising in the morning, the children will

see the sweet fruits of their good works.

Ash Wednesday February 14th

I’ve saved the best for last. Lent is a wonderful time to explore

new and renewed opportunities for family prayer. A decade of

the Rosary each evening as the family gathers around the dinner

table is a fine place and time to do this. Also, mark you calen-

dars and set you iPhones to remind you to attend at least one

Stations of the Cross on a Friday evening at 6:30. Afterwards, go

out for a family fish dinner. Hey! You can do both on February

16 and March 16 at St. Mary’s.

Dear friends, by the grace of God, let this Lenten

Season be one that deepens the faith of you and your family, not

just for 40 days, but for eternity.

Peace and goodness to you and your family…
