Leighton apartments snapped upWITH already 70 per cent of apartmentssold, Multiplex’s flagship residential develop-ment at Leighton beach in North Fremantle ishot property.

Due for completion in 2011,The Leightonrepresents a unique living opportunity and isthe only residential development in the areato provide unobstructed ocean views and anortherly aspect of the coast to the Cottes-loe Pines.

Brookfield Residential director of sales andmarketing Philip Leahy said high demand forthese properties was based on the tangiblevalue in a pristine oceanfront location.

“The Leighton Beach precinct is beingtransformed and will become one of Perth’smost sought-after coastal villages within thenext five or so years, incorporating a hotel, boutique shops, cafes and restaurants,” hesaid. “Our purchasers recognise The Leightonas exceptional value – the pinnacle of avail-able beachside apartment real estate inPerth.”

Designed by renowned architect AlexPopov, the development reflects the veryfinest in form and function and incorporatessustainable design features.

Alex Popov & Associates director BrianBass says the main focus of the design was toensure it had every comfort while remainingsensitive to natural surroundings.

“We have worked with leading environ-mental designers to use the natural assets of the site, such as the famed Fremantle ‘doc-tor’, which will significantly reduce energyusage, while light wells and external solarshading naturally light and cool the homes,’’he said.

Starting from $1.3 million for an elevatedfirst-floor poolside residence, all apartmentshave direct access to the pool enclosure, withmanicured landscapes throughout, along witha gym and outdoor pavilion.

Contact Catherine Allen, of Multiplex, on0412 927 150 for details. ■

STEPPING inside this Mediter-ranean-inspired mansion in CityBeach, it is as though I have walkedinto a poolside setting in Capri.

The commanding corner propertyspans almost 1000sqm, and is sur-rounded by the most immaculate ofgardens and hedges – a garden thatwould put Edward Scissorhands toshame.

The sandstone exterior comprisesRoman arches, french windows andover-height chimneys creating a strik-ing street display, not that it is out ofplace amongst the other statelyhomes of Windarra Drive.

The home was built some 15 yearsago but has retained a classic ele-gance.

While glamorous formal living anddining areas occupy either side of thegranite-lined entrance, the casualareas – split over two levels – areperfect for the modern family, max-imising convenience, separation andstyle.

Cedar architraves and open fire-places add warmth to the neutralcolour scheme of the interior.

Exquisite handmade balustrades tothe stairs and second-level walkways

create a stylish point of distinction. There are two bedrooms on the

ground level, a guest bedroom andmaster suite, both with luxuriousensuite bathrooms and french doorsopening out to a breathtaking Romanswimming pool and split-level ter-race.

On the other side, a cedar-linedalfresco area off the kitchen and din-ing is enclosed by bifold and frenchdoors.

The children’s bedrooms are onthe second level, flanked by severalopen-plan living and activity areas.

Across the landing is a completehome office with a glass divider wallcapturing magnificent ocean views.

An adjacent sitting area leads outto a spacious rooftop terrace wheresummer dining would be magical, overlooking the pine trees of West

Coast Highway and out to Rottnestisland.

This sensational home is in aleague of its own. ■

Palatial City Beach home impresses. By JANE EVANS

IT doesn’t get much more gor-geous than this.

Originally a modest earlyworker’s cottage, a renovation tothis Subiaco property culminatedin a stunning period home with aFrench provincial feel.

The renovation set out toachieve an ornate exteriorappearance and functional homewithout compromising the cot-tage ambience of the property.

Seamlessly renovated andextended by Mulberry homes, it isthe quintessential Subiaco resi-dence, featuring high ceilings, jar-rah floorboards and decorativearches.

The home has three spaciousbedrooms including a massivemaster suite with french doorsout to a pretty brick pavedprovincial style courtyard featur-ing an old Victorian style lamp-post.

A fourth room at the rear ofthe property is above the garageand could be used as a playroom, teenage retreat or home office.

The open lounge room is gen-erously proportioned and fea-tures double storey, raked ceilings

and stunning gothic style frenchwindows out to the courtyard.

A timber staircase leads to amezzanine style guest bedroomwith ensuite, ideal for friends tostay over after a dinner party orlong lunch in the sun-drenchedcourtyard.

The kitchen is centrally placedwith granite bench tops and stain-less steel appliances, compliment-

ed by white cabinetry. The fit outis modern but still in keeping withthe character style of the home.

A large separate dining room isperhaps my favourite room of thehome, with an open fireplace andbeautiful, solid timber andwrought iron french doors open-ing out to a front verandah andgarden.

Everything about this home isutterly stylish, yet understated.

It is the type of home that youcannot help dreaming about foryourself.

Just minutes from Subiaco’sshopping and cafe strip and withKings Park on the doorstop, I amsurprised someone has notalready made the dream a reality.

Time to fit RCDs to circuitsIN recent years, more than 20 people, including six children, have been fatally elec-trocuted in WA homes.

According to the State Government, allof these deaths might have been preventedif a residual-current device (RCD) had beenfitted to the power point (socket outlet)and lighting circuits within the home.

Rules relating to smoke alarms and RCDdevices will soon become obligatory for alllandlords in Western Australia.

Managing Director of HOUS (HomeOwners Utility Services) Todd Allender saidowners of investment properties have justone year to comply with important newrules relating to smoke detectors and evenless for RCD devices.

From October 1, 2010, mains poweredsmoke alarms must be fitted in all existingresidential buildings prior to sale and whena new tenancy agreement is signed for

rental properties. If there are no tenancychanges in rental properties, then mainspowered smoke alarms must be fitted byOctober 1, 2011.

Thus, landlords who have long term ten-ants must have their mains powered smokedetector alarms fitted within the next year.

“A year can pass very quickly and land-lords should make every effort to complywith the new laws relating to smoke detec-tors and RCDs as soon as possible,” said MrAllender.

“Failure to comply with this legislationcould result in significant financial penalties,”he said

More detailed information in relation to the new requirements for RCDs can befound at www.commerce.wa.gov.au/Ener-gySafety/RCD/ while information on smokealarms can be found at www.fesa.wa.gov.au.■

Built in 1900 andstill going strongA GREAT deal of heart and soul havegone into this turn-of-the-century Freman-tle home.

The old world brick and iron residenceoverlooking theFremantle harbourwas built in 1900and has had veryfew owners.

When the cur-rent owner boughtit in 2003, heundertook exten-sive renovations.

Over sevenyears, he renewedall the plumbingand wiring, replaced the roof, updated andextended thekitchen and creat-ed a spacious, lightfilled area at therear.

The owner of a timber business, he alsostripped back several layers of paint torestore beautiful timber elements through-out.

“I’ve always loved old heritage houses,”he said.

“Tuckfield is like a little secret street inFremantle.

“The breeze off the river if beautiful.”The charming street, just minutes from

the centre of town, is now a blend ofultra-modern houses and old worldcharm, occupied by those who appreciatethe rare character and quality of thisunique location.

Number 71 has four bedrooms, one ofwhich is used as a large home office, andone bathroom.

Spacious rooms, high ceilings, lead lights

and several working fireplaces – includingone sourced from a country hotel – com-

bine to create a bygone style of Fremantle. The 554sqm property includes a 30,000

litre water tank aswell as three addi-tional water tanks.

A wide verandahencloses the front of

the house whileaccess to the garage

is via a ROW offDorothy Street.

The home standson solid capstone –the deep trenches

for the originalplumbing were dug

the hard way byconvicts with pickax-

es – and the struc-ture remains rock-

solid.There is tranquilli-

ty to the home that can not be matched.Watching sunsets over the harbour,

ships murmuring in the background, whatcould be better? ■

Tri-level masterpiece from leading architectsABSOLUTE decadence was clearlyat the forefront of multi-award win-ning architects JCY when designingthis Ridgeway Constructions builthome.

A tri-level masterpiece, it effort-lessly combines contemporary style, quality appointments and luxury.

An array of wide staircases andhallways are accessible upon entryand lead to numerous secluded wingsof the interior.

The upper level is an expansivespace enhanced by the high ceilings and flooded with natural lightfrom glass bi-fold doors and win-dows.

There is an open-plan living, diningand kitchen area with heated Traver-tine flooring, full C-Bus down lighting, data connection and a Bose surroundsystem.

Spacious and deluxe, the kitchenhas white stone bench tops which

includes a large island bench, soft-closing drawers, an abundance ofstorage space and top of the rangeMiele appliances including two stain-less steel ovens, a separate steamoven, microwave/grill, dishwasher, cook top and rangehood.

Bi-fold doors seamlessly expandthis area to include the large balconywith outdoor kitchen and plungepool.
