THERE is no denying that riverfront livingis as desirable as winning Lotto.

If you are fortunate enough to live onthe banks of Perth’s Swan River, you areindeed one of the ‘lucky ones’.

Over the last 30 years, a growingnumber of people have been realising thatto own a riverfront property is theultimate in lifestyle as well as the ultimateinvestment.

In 1980, William Porteous (pictured, topright) sold the most expensive riverfrontproperty in Australia – 64 Jutland Parade,Dalkeith – for the record price of $2.150million.

Since then we have seen the value ofsuch properties increase ten-fold.

Nowadays, the most expensive home onthe banks of the Swan is a $65 millionproperty at 43 Saunders Street in MosmanPark.

Owner Angela Bennett is daughter ofthe late Peter Wright, business partner ofLang Hancock, the pioneer of WA’s ironore industry in the 1950s.

Set in the most strategic commandingwaterfront location on 7567sq m of primereal estate, the residence is sprawled overthree levels.

It features five bedrooms, four

bathrooms, three powder rooms, gymnasium, steam room, indoor swimmingpool, astro-turfed, international-size tenniscourt, resort-style swimming pool andtemperature-controlled wine cellar.

Reputable Western Suburbs realtorPorteous has been able to show peoplevery substantial appreciation on theirproperty despite the current downturn inprices.

The director of William PorteousProperties International said from the veryearly days ofPerth, landholdersappreciated thatthe river was aprecious naturalresource andthe mostbeautiful placeto build a homefor their familiesand theirdescendants.

“Today, magnificent mansions can beseen along both north and south banks ofthe river and also on the higher ground justback from the waterfront to take advantageof the spectacular water views,” MrPorteous said.

“Many of these large parcels of landremained in the hands of the same familiesfor generations but have gradually beensubdivided and sections sold off as the landbecame more and more valuable.

“A walk along the river beach aroundDalkeith and Claremont, or a boat tripdown the river will disclose manymagnificent homes right on the riverfront.

“These properties are accessed via

unobtrusive entry gates and are invisiblefrom the roads.

“The fortunate owners are able to enjoycomplete privacy and unobstructed accessto the river front.”

Mr Porteous acknowledged it wasdifficult to find blocks along the river whichhad not been subdivided, but said whenconsidering the purchase of such propertyit was important to confirm the exactboundaries and to research the potentialfor future subdivision, as sometimes the old

Title documentsdidn’t agree withmodern councilrecords.

“It is alsoimportant toascertain whetherthe Swan RiverTrust may beinterested inreclaiming a smallsection of the block

on the riverfront,’’ he said. “This sometimeshappens as an opportunity presents itselfwhen properties change hands.”

Although riverfront properties aretightly held, Mr Porteous said they didbecome available from time to time butthere were no bargains to be had and suchproperties frequently changed handswithout the sale becoming generalknowledge.

“Astute buyers are always there whensuch properties come onto the market,’’ hesaid. “My advice is to speak to anexperienced agent who understands thehistory of riverfront sales and has theirfinger on the pulse of this very specialisedmarket.” ■

The kings in their castles

CARMELLE SANDEREditor

‘If you live on theriver, you are

indeed one of thelucky ones

It is difficult to find blocks along the river which have not been subdivided IF you’re looking for a moreaffordable oceanside lifestyle, thenJindalee Beachside may well be thesea change for you.

Located between BrightonEstate and the ocean, Jindalee isabout a 40-minute drive north ofthe Perth CBD.

It provides an alternative way oflife for those looking to reside closeto the sea but well away from thehustle and bustle of inner-city living.

One of the facilities locals canlook forward to is the kiosk andpicnic areas that the City ofWanneroo began constructing inSeptember of last year. Likened toClarko Reserve at Trigg Beach, thearea will be situated at the end ofJindalee Boulevard and will featureboardwalks and promenades alongthe foreshore reserve.

Satterley Property Group isoffering buyers a chance to acquirea prime seaside block of land, whichis becoming increasingly difficult toattain in today’s property market.

The infrastructure of JindaleeBeachside, along with the area’scafes, shops and various facilities, will enhance the district’s overallappeal, making it one of the mostsought-after modern coastalsuburbs in northern Perth.

There are various lot sizes up forsale in several estates, starting at$295,000 for a 368sqm block ofland.

WHEN architect and owner David Hillamset out to create this property, he wantedsomething that had open living spaces andprovided plenty of accommodation for hisfour children.

With the design brief fulfilled and aunique aesthetic, the result is acontemporary home with as much focus onits function as in its style.

It has large living areas in succession fromfront to back, and bedrooms are set alongtwo separate wings.

David said he and his wife Joanne likedthe elevated position of the block andwanted to take advantage of the north-facing front.

He created a large deck alfresco area thatoverlooks the street and opens from alounge room through over-height doubledoors.

The alfresco area has an outdoor kitchenwith bar fridge, sink and barbecue built-in.

Over-height doors and floor-to-ceilingglass is in many areas, with extra high

ceilings in living areas and clean lines andmodern accents resulting in an almostwarehouse feel.

David had highlight windows added tooriginal roofline height, creating light-filledareas as well as integrating indoor andoutdoor areas.

“The flow of inside and outside spacesmoves really well… it’s really good that youcan see the pool from the kitchen, from afamily point of view,” he said.

The galley kitchen, with mostly drawer

storage space, has CaesarStone wraparoundtops contrasted by a stainless steel workingspace around a cooktop.

A private courtyard opens at one side ofthe living area, while at the other a deckedalfresco joins a landscaped garden, where apool with water feature and lightingprovides a spectacle from a main bedroom.

David said they loved the area as it hadshops, cafes and parks nearby, was close tothe beach and only a quick and pleasantdrive from the city. ■

Wall-to-wall modernity

IF curves are your thing, then the interior of this innovative,Swanbourne home will get you excited.

The standout feature of the house is an amazing curvedinternal wall of polished concrete that runs through thecentre of the home, dividing the space in two.

The wall is stunning to look at, softens the interior andcreates a free-flowing effect from the front to the rear of thehome, designed by Cottesloe architects Blacket Smith.

From the first glance, the polished concrete exterior andvast aluminium framed glass doors and window immediatelygive the impression of innovative modernity.

A fun use of glass recurs throughout the house, creatingboth visually interesting design elements and entry points fornatural light and air.

Inside, the two-storey property oozes sophistication and

style yet has a feeling of warmth and serenity. On one side of the curved wall is a spacious open-plan

living area, which flows from a wall of glass at the frontoverlooking the pool to a wall of glass at the rear overlookingthe back garden.

Two sets of aluminium framed double glass doors at eachend can be opened to allow the breeze to circulatethroughout the home.

A stainless workbench, massive square sink and stove topon one side provide ideal conditions in a kitchen, with an ivoryCaesarStone bench in the centre.

Victorian ash floorboards feature on this side of the house, with random lights along the edge near the curved wall addinga special touch.

The second level is all about the parents. Carpeted in plush, 100 per cent charcoal wool, this area

includes a versatile living room.A main bedroom has another polished concrete feature

wall and floor-to-ceiling glass at the front, with double doorsleading to an angular balcony overlooking the pool.

Past the walk-in robe is the super stylish bathroom with

quality fittings and a fabulous double shower tiled in chocolatemosaics.

Smart wiring, reverse cycle air conditioning and a remotedouble garage add to the functional features of this elegantfamily home. ■

DO NOT let a modest facade fool you. Beyond the front door of this rendered

’70s single-level home are surprises galore. The pebbled feature tiles in the entry give

the first hint of something different, and thenit is surprise after surprise, starting with thefireplace in the lounge room – not just awarmth giver but a showpiece. Although it is afully functioning gas heater, lighting allows it tobe used purely for visual effect.

The walls surrounding the fireplace areshelved, mirrored and fitted with down lightsto show off treasured ornaments.

Two sets of double doors lead off thelounge, leading to a dining room or homeoffice that overlooks a massive timber-floored, sunken entertaining area that is usedas a games room and gym.

On the upper level of this room, throughyet another set of double doors, a home-

theatre room is carpeted, dark and ready fora cinematic escape.

The owner is a lover of the outdoors andentertaining because another surprise waitsbeyond the glass sliding doors of theentertaining area. An enormous Balinese-stylegazebo has timber decking and a separatepaved area for alfresco dining.

The gazebo looks out over a saltwater poolsurrounded by tropical plants.

A minor bedroom has a glass-tiled featurewall that allows light to enter. Its mainbedroom has a walk-in robe and an ensuite.

One last surprise lies below the timberdeck of the gazebo. It is a two car-under-ground garage, or storeroom, accessible froma set of stairs at the side of the house.

In an elevated position next to the soon-to-be completed Wembley Downs shoppingcentre, this home really is a surprise package. ■

Place of hopes, dreams and memoriesNAMED after Sir James Stirling’s uncle, SirWalter Stirling, Point Walter Road, in Bicton, has been the focal point of the lives of manyfamilies over the years.

Starting at Canning Highway, intersected byPreston Point Road and meandering down tothe picturesque Point Walter Reserve, the roadholds a lot of hopes, dreams and memories forthose who have lived along it in the past, as wellas those who call it home today.

The street is a combination of new andoriginal homes, with villa complexes moreprominent towards the highway end.

These filter off the closer you get to the river, where block sizes get bigger and the possibilityof a wonderful view increases.

Ray and Rene Cressie bought one of theoriginal blocks of land released at the end of theWar and started married life by building theirdream home in 1949.

Their daughter, Paula Harris, said her parentscreated a nurturing environment for her andher two brothers in the Cressie family home

“My father built the home himself and likeeveryone else, felt the shortages of thosetimes,” she said.

“It was a pretty carefree childhood with a lotof time spent down at the river, with swimminglessons during the school holidays.

“There was still quite a bit of bushland thenand we would walk to Bicton Primary Schoolwhich was just a couple of blocks away.”

Paula left the street in the 1970s when sheturned 21 but said that even though most of thefamilies from that time have now moved on,too, the neighbourhood was still a friendly placewhere everyone knew one another and helpedeach other when they could.

One of these newer families to the road isthe Bright family.

Rochelle and Clinton made the decision tomove from Shelley to Point Walter Road two-and-half years ago with their three youngchildren.

Rochelle said they wanted to be closer to thebeach and river while at the same time living in

a house they could renovate that was largeenough for their family.

Like the Cressie residence, their home wasone of the originals too, built in the 1950s andpurchased from the original owners.

“A large block size was important and thegood zoning along the street meant that this

one was kept at a good size with a wide verge,”Rochelle said.

“We love that there’s a lot of pepperminttrees and other older trees for the kids to hangtheir swings from and there is just so muchbirdlife, with the kookaburras in the morningand the ducks that like to swim in our pool.” ■

THERE is something magical about a rug.Whether Aladdin and his flying carpet have anything to do

with it or not, there is no denyingthat a beautifully handwoven rugcreates mystique and beauty in anyroom of the home.

Jenny Jones Rugs in Claremonthas one of the largest ranges ofexclusive rugs from all over theworld, including Turkey, Nepal andPakistan.

Owner Jenny Jones developed aninterest in rugs whilst living in Turkeywith her family in the 1990s.

She fell in love with the world ofrugs, which included its relationshipwith the Turkish culture.

“We specialise in modern designsand a selection of hand-picked traditional designs. Ourmodern rugs are mainly sourced from the Kathmandu Valleyin Nepal and we use only top-quality, hand-spun Tibetan woolthat has retained its lanolin and lustre to produce a piece that

has its own inbuilt Scotchgard ,’’ she said.Jenny travels to the leading world rug fairs and works

with her leading producers to create designs in colourranges that will suit Australian interiors.

Her husband Dennis said Jenny had an eye for colour, which enabled her to differentiate from others.

“This is easily identifiable in her designs and colourselections,’’ he said.

“She works with top-quality, hand-woven rugproducers who are leading world trendsetters indesign and colour.

“This collaboration has enabled her to produceunique one-off designs in the latest fashion coloursthat are also found in the top hand-woven rug-markets of North America and Europe.’’

Jenny Jones Rugs also specialises in custom-designed modern rugs, using the expertise of their in-

house design team. This is a complimentary service and involves a home

consultation with the client in order to maximise the abilityto produce a rug that is reflective of their personality.

Once the design has been finalised, the rug is hand-woven

in Nepal. All Jenny Jones Rugsare made using only hand labour.

No machines are used and therefore each piece is anindividual handcrafted piece unique in its design and colour.

Jenny and Dennis said the family room and lounge area arethe most important rooms for a rug, and it should reflect themood of the room.

“It is the hub of the home and the rug should define andadd warmth to the area. It should be noted that the right rugwill not dominate but ‘complete’ the picture,’’ Jenny said.
