BEHIND the design of this building was an ideathat it should be stylish not stark, and theowners should spend as little time cleaning aspossible.

Add to that a floor plan that caters toentertaining and the result is this attractive, low-maintenance lock-up-and-leave property.

A galley kitchen is at the centre of living areas, with double sliding doors opening parallel to acentral courtyard.

Living areas include a formal lounge room atone end and an open-plan family area at theother, open into the same courtyard, integratingindoor and outdoor spaces.

An advantage of this arrangement is that the

courtyard has total privacy. It also has space foroutdoor entertaining and a raised planter box, providing a delightful green feature and seating.

Granite benchtops with flecks of garnetfeature in the kitchen, with lacquered cupboardsand glass splashbacks.

Miele stainless steel kitchen appliances includea ceramic electric and gas-powered cooktop.

Travertine tile flooring and recessed ceilingswith downlights over each living space illustratethe high standard of finish to this house.

It has zoned, ducted reverse-cycleairconditioning through many areas, with a splitsystem in a main bedroom.

The master bedroom upstairs has its own

balcony and a light, bright walk-in wardrobe, highlighted by a large ensuite in travertine andmarble.

A double vanity unit is separated from ascreenless double shower behind, opening to aspa bath and separate toilet area.

Separating minor bedrooms, an open studyarea receives an abundance of morning sunlightthrough windows that overlook the courtyard.

Each minor bedroom is double-sized and hasa built-in wardrobe, while two have ensuiteaccess.

The residence is on a 315sqm block and has adouble garage with laneway entry. ■

Luxury finishes include a lift toall three levels, and a wine cellarand storage area shares thebottom level with a three-cargarage.

Double entry doors open to aliving area with kitchenette and bi-fold doors that lead to a spaciousbalcony.

Designed to provide separatezones, in addition to the livingspace only a study, laundry, bathroom and two bedrooms areon this level.

A large tinted glass panel andglass door opens the indoors to asmall central courtyard near thebedrooms.

Blackbutt timber stairs lead tothe top level, where an open-planliving area sprawls to the north

and opens to a balcony like that atentry level. This balcony providesmore extensive ocean viewsthrough the treetops and allowsthe sea breeze to blow in.

Sets of windows along a sidewall create sunny living quarters, incorporating a kitchen andspacious dining and family areas.

Timbergrain laminate featuresadd interest to gloss whitecabinetry in the kitchen, which isfinished by a CaesarStone

JOLIMONT might be a long way fromTwickenham but the owners of thisstunning home have done their best tobring a little bit of West London to thewestern suburbs.

They designed two narrow houses sideby side, similar to the terrace houses ofLondon and facing a park at the back, toutilise the lush green grounds as a sharedback yard.

Suzy said this set up created a realsense of community.

"In London it is very common for agroup of houses to all look on to acommon garden or park that they allshare," she said.

A kitchenette, complete with small

fridge, sink and cupboards, allows the toplevel to be a self-contained area forguests.

Along with a main bedroom, there isalso a bathroom and two doublebedrooms, one with a small balconyoverlooking Jersey Street.

With its pitched ceiling and wall ofglass, the spacious main bedroom hasspectacular views of Mabel Talbot Parkand a stunning ensuite with contemporaryfittings, plus a walk-in wardrobe.

At the back, an open-plan living, diningand kitchen area opens through floor-to-ceiling timber-framed bi-fold doors to ahuge tiled deck with built-in barbecue andfridge.

Caesarstone benches, a big centralisland, Blanco oven and five-burner gashob feature in the kitchen, and a glossgrey glass splashback running the length ofthe kitchen adds to the sleek look.

A home theatre provides a cinemaexperience without leaving the house.

On this level, there is a massivestoreroom or cellar plus a garage, withthe driveway accessed via a small lane offthe park.

"We're quite passionate about thehome because we built it for ourselvesnot just as a property development, andwe really spent the time and the money tomake sure everything was top of therange and just right," said Matthew. ■

THE way the back of this Dalkeith house flows outside helpsto make an open-plan living area the hub of the home.

A large extension comprising dining and family areasmoulds seamlessly with the original 1930s house, with ceilingheight and decorative plaster features maintained here.

The owner, Louise, said it was her favourite part because ofits openness.

Reputation for ceramics firmly laid

CHOOSING the right tile for your homecan be a daunting task.

The options are endless, with all sorts offactors to consider.

Besides looking good, is the tile slip-resistant, stain-resistant, long-wearing, easyto clean and nice to walk on?

Should it benatural stone orceramic?

Has any plant, animal or humanbeen harmed in theproduction of theproduct?

Thankfully, MSTTiles can answer allyour questions.

A family-operated companyin Osborne Park, ithas been importingsome of theworld’s finestceramic tiles formore than 40years.

Most come fromregions in Spainand Italy, drawingfrom centuries ofcraftsmanship andtiling tradition.

According to MST Tiles managing directorJohn Tavelli, the tiling industry is foreverimproving and developing new products inthe quest to create better, less slippery, more

natural or justmore fabulous-lookingvarieties.

One of thefirst questionspeople ask iswhether tochoose naturalor ceramic tilesand Mr Tavellibelieves thereare manyadvantages tochoosing man-made.

“Ceramic tiletechnology canproduce tilesthat replicate a

variety of natural products so well that theyare mistaken for the real thing,” he said.

“In the past, this was not the case andthere was a distinguishable difference

between the real and the man-made. “However, looking good is one thing but

you need more reasons to actually choose aman-made product over the naturalmaterial.”

Advantages of ceramic tiles include theavoidance of thedestruction orreduction oflimited naturalproducts, andthe fact thatman-madeproducts canimpart superiortechnicalproperties suchas higher scratch resistance, colour fastness,UV resistance and slip resistance.

Mr Tavelli says in this day and age, environmental considerations are alwaysimportant and architects and designers inparticular are sensitive to environmentalconcerns when choosing products.

“The real advantage of dealing with moreestablished and reputable suppliers is thatthey have production plants that are designedto cope with strict environmental standardsand in fact choose to improve their standardscontinually as a point of difference to some of

the less expensivecompetitors,” he said.

“The demand for moreenvironmentally sensitiveproducts will only beincreasing as time goes on.

“The top priority, ofcourse, is a tile that looksgreat and stays looking greatand MST Tiles has a fantasticrange to suit just about any

surface.”While the replication of natural stone is

still the most popular choice, there are nowtiles that replicate timber, metal, glass andeven leather. Plus there are tiles that glow atnight and the latest innovation – tiles thatabsorb pollution. ■

AS one of Perth’s most popular touristattractions, the team at Kings Park BotanicGardens and Parks Authority realised therewas something missing that could providevisitors with a great feeling at the start orend of their journey.

That idea resulted in the standout Aspectsof Kings Park building on Fraser Avenue – atthe hub of Kings Park – which gives visitorsthe chance to take home not just parkmemorabilia, but something special.

Marcelle Broderick, director of Businessand Visitor Services, said they wanted to addto visitors’ experience, with a clear requestfor high-quality products that reflected WA.

The parks authority decided to build and

run the store themselves tomaintain a high standard –starting with a philosophy ofexemplary customerservice.

Profits are re-invested in the storeand staff arepassionate aboutcreating a directrelation betweenAspects and the park,as well as stockingbeautiful pieces that arehigh-end but not untouchable.

Marcelle said they had a range

of stock that appealed to differentgroups and budgets – all with a

connection to nature andall different and unique.

“[If someone] waslooking for something

very special tobecome a focal point

or conversation piecefor your house, [a

piece from here] isguaranteed to providethat… most pieces are

one-off and all are hand-made,” she said.

Business manager Nicole Parks

and stockist Catherine Healy have workedhard at getting WA artists’ work into thestore, and now more than 60 per cent of artis created by local artists.

Pieces stocked range from small andintricate jewellery designs through to tablewear, prints and large sculptures.

Designers include WA glass artists DavidHay and Catherine Lys, WA fine furnituremaker David Byl, WA ceramic artist AmandaShelsher and popular Mud Australia andDinosaur Designs.

WA metal artist Rod Laws’ recycled metalsculptures – including a giant orb and a tub-style chair dubbed ‘Don’t Just Sit There’ –form an in-store spectacle. ■
