Sermon Outline

Romans 15:13 says: May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Hope is to desire something with confident expectation of its fulfillment. 1. In Christ we have the hope of moral victory Moral Relativism: Ethical standards, morality, and positions of right or wrong are culturally based and there-fore subject to a person's individual choice. We can all decide what is right for ourselves. You decide what's right for you, and I'll decide what's right for me. Moral relativism says, "It's true for me, if I believe it." Examples:

o Les Miserables o Aladdin

“One Step Ahead” You gotta keep one jump ahead of the breadline One swing ahead of the sword I steal only what I can't afford (That's Everything!) One jump ahead of the lawmen That's all, and that's no joke These guys don't appreciate I'm broke

1 Peter 1:14-16: 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your igno-rance, 15 but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; 16 because it is written, “YOU SHALL BE HOLY, FOR I AM HOLY.”

Part 3

Sermon Notes

James 14:7, Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins. Romans 3:23, All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God Sanctification: The process of breaking sinful habits and developing godly habits and attitudes. Romans 8:9-14: 9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10 If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. 12 So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. Galatians 5:16-25: 16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. 17 For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in oppo-sition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. 19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, 21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, pa-tience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. 2. In Christ we have the hope of victory over our circumstances. 2 Corinthians 1:3-5: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. A Grief Observed, CS Lewis, p33, “Why do I make room in my mind for such filth and nonsense? Do I hope that if feeling dis-guises itself as thought I shall feel less? Aren't all these notes the senseless writhings of a man who won't accept the fact that there is nothing we can do with suffering except to suffer

it? Who still thinks there is some device (if only he could find it) which will make pain not to be pain. It doesn't really matter whether you grip the arms of the dentist's chair or let your hands lie in your lap. The drill drills on.” “Depression: Looking Up From the Stubborn Darkness,” Edward T Welch, pp82, 119: “Perseverance isn’t flashy. It doesn’t call attention to itself. It looks like putting one foot in front of the other. But beneath the surface, where few can see the glory, is something very profound. You are becoming more like God. God sees it, and He is pleased by it. Perseverance is more than just going through life until you die of natural causes. It is perseverance in faith and obedience. It is perseverance in our God-given purpose, even when life is very hard. Perseverance asks the question, ‘Today, how will I represent God? How will I trust Him and follow Him in obedience? Then it asks for help from others, cries out to the Lord, and looks for an opportunity to love. It may seem feeble, but our confidence is in the God who is strong. The essence of persevering is trust-ing and obeying because of Jesus.” “Isn’t it true that suffering reveals us? While prosperity allows us to hide, hardship peels off masks we didn’t even know we were wearing. During better times, we can be happy, unafraid, confident, and optimistic, but the lean years reveal the best and worst in us. Put a dozen like-minded people in the same crisis and you will see a dozen different responses. Some are heroes; other are cow-ards. Some are leader; other are followers. Some are optimistic; others despair. Some shake their fist at God; others quietly submit. You don’t really know who you are until you have gone through suffering. We can measure our spiritual growth by the way we behave under pressure.” “Find a person who has weathered storms rather than avoided them and you will find someone who is wise.” Colossians 3:15 says: 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. 3. The hope that we have in Christ through the Holy Spirit gives us victory over death. Definition of hope: to desire something with confident expectation of its fulfillment. John 14:2-3: 2 In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. 3 If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. 1 Corinthinas 15:55-57 55 O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; 57 but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Reflection

Pioneer Bible Translators bridges the gap between the church and the Bible-less peoples around the world. We are serving 17 million people in 46 language pro-jects on our current fields. God is calling us to expand and begin 26 additional projects and 4 new fields! We are seeking 200 new missionaries by 2012 who will step up and meet the need for incarnational ministry among Bible-less peoples. Our team is composed of Bible translators, literacy evangelists, church planters and a variety of support personnel transforming lives through God’s Word in every language. Pioneer Bible Translators aspires to be the best problem-solving team for helping a people without God’s Word impact their context with Scripture, equipping them to translate it into their language and use it to transform their community. Helping a people group go from Bible-less to Bible impact constitutes our sharp focus. Our flexible, holistic approach is a core strength. We will consider our ministry among a people group complete when a network of churches is using Scripture to grow and multiply. The four primary strategies of Pioneer Bible Translators are to:

• Mobilize God’s People • Provide enduring access to God’s Word • Disciple the Bible-less by maximizing the impact of Scripture • Accelerate the mission through team work

PRAYER MINISTRY TEAM MEETING OVER AT THE JOURNEY OFFICE SUNDAYS AT 6:30 PM

Come join us as we enjoy our God through prayer, Sunday evenings at 6:30pm over at the Journey office (the white house). We will have a time to praise our Lord through prayer, as well as pray for each other’s needs and those of our church body.

Also keep in mind, even the disciples had to ask how to pray. So if this is an area of your life you want to grow in, come join us as we disciple each other in prayer. Let’s seek to live out Hebrews 10:19-23 together. If you have any questions, email Mike Ambroso at [email protected].

THE JOURNEY’S TRUNK ‘N TREAT… & MORE! FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31ST 6-8:30 PM

- whether you are a participant in the trunk decorating or just bringing your children to a safe, family-friendly choice for Halloween, you won’t want to miss this! Be prepared for fun and fellowship - and, of course, CANDY! Oh - and the “More” part of the event is a pumpkin drop! So be sure to bring your pumpkins for a smashing good time.

You may also see a side of our Journey family that you’ve never seen before … If you would like to decorate a trunk, which includes providing enough candy for about 300 kids, please sign up in the lobby. WE ALSO NEED PUMPKINS! Crazy as it seems, if we are going to have a pumpkin drop, we need pumpkins to drop! And the more the better! If you would be able to contribute a pumpkin or two (especially if you have ones that you are done with from home), PLEASE bring them to the church anytime right up to the night of Trunk ’n Treat.

JOURNEY KIDZ SUNDAY - LAST WEEK TO SIGN UP TODAY! December 14th, Journey Kidz will be leading both Sunday Morning Services. It will be a wonderful opportunity for our children to use their gifts and shine for Jesus! Each age group will be overseeing different portions of the service, everything from music to skits & puppets! This Sunday is the last week kids can sign up to participate! Sign-ups are located in the lobby and at the Journey Kidz Check-Out station.

As we will use portions of November Sunday morning service time to rehearse, students who sign up MUST COMMIT to attending one service each Sunday in November (holidays exception) and both dress rehearsals December 6th & 13th at 9AM. This is an event that will require a lot of planning and prep with our kids, so commitment is necessary! We are excited for all God will do with this time! If you have questions or wish to volunteer, please contact Michelle D'Angelo at [email protected].

MEN’S BREAKFAST & BIBLE STUDY NOVEMBER 1ST

Plan on joining the Journeymen on November 1st at 8:00am for food, study & fellowship. We will be

continuing our leadership series on Biblical traits of Godly Men. A devotion was sent out this past week to all men on our current email list. If you did not receive one, let us know and we will get one out to you! This is a great time to join our men’s fellowship and make connections with the other men of the Journey!

For more information contact David Sleight at [email protected].

JOURNEY MOMS’ PLAYGROUP - LEADER NEEDED Journey Moms’ Playgroup is a ministry that was created as a way for moms to take a break from the normal and get to know other moms, to hang out while the kids play. The current leader needs to step down, so we need to find someone who would be willing to take this on as their min-istry. Basically it involves coordinating an activity, at least

once a month (currently scheduled on the 2nd Wednesday of each month) at a local playground or other kid-friendly place. If you are interested or need more information, please contact Christi-na Bell at [email protected].

NOVEMBER “JOURNEY” DEVOTIONALS FOR WOMEN NOW AVAILABLE

Need a daily devotional? This monthly women's devotional magazine offers guidance for a growing, personal relationship with God. Each weekday devotion deals with issues and real-life situations. It is provided free by the Journey’s Women’s Ministry. Pick up your copy in the lobby today!

JR/SR HIGH GIRLS BIBLE STUDY - TIME CHANGE The Jr/Sr High Girls life group resumed on October 5th studying various topics of interest to today’s teen. They are still meeting Sundays at Panera in Kingstowne, but will now meet at 1:30pm. If your teen would like to come, they would love to see her there!

Please contact Candace Neumann - [email protected] for more information.

Next Sunday, November 2nd!

JOURNEY MEALS TO GO Journey Meals To Go is an area of our church ministry that directly touches those in need. Currently, we pro-vide meals to those that have had a new baby, had sur-

gery or had any other circumstance arise that put them in need of meal support. The meals are coordinated through the Meal Train website, making it simple for the Journey Meals support-ers and recipients to get all the important details. If you or someone you know within the church is in need of support, or if you would like to help provide meals, please contact Ramy Ruiz at [email protected] or Lisa Steedsman - [email protected] via email.

LABELS FOR EDUCATION - MOUNTAIN MISSION SCHOOL Please save the UPC code/lids from the products listed in the flyer which, due to construction, is now located on the cart in the lob-by. Also save the “Box Tops for Education” coupons on various products, including Kleenex tissues, cake mixes, and frozen prod-ucts. Place them in the box also provided on the cart in the lob-by. They will be sent to the Mountain Mission School in Grundy, Virginia. These labels are great-ly appreciated by them as they can use them to get a variety of different supplies & equipment that the school couldn’t get otherwise! One thing to keep in mind - don’t hold onto your “Box Tops” too long - they do expire and they can’t use them if the date on them is past!

THE BULLETIN IS NOW ONLINE! … well, it’s actually been on there for awhile, we just wanted to make sure you know! If you would like to save some paper, you can down-load the bulletin from our website. Just go to thejourneysite.org, click on the “Media & Resources” page, then on “This Week at the Journey” - and click on the date of the bulletin that you need. The bulletin for the current Sunday is normally available by 5pm the Saturday before if you

need to download it before you come to church.
