Sermon Outline

Colossians 3:13, “Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord has forgiven you.” Matthew 6:14-15, “For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” Matthew 18:32-35 (NCV), "Then the master called his servant in and said, 'You evil servant! Be-cause you begged me to forget what you owed, I told you that you did not have to pay anything. You should have showed mercy to that other servant, just as I showed mercy to you.' The master was very angry and put the servant in prison to be punished until he could pay everything he owed. This king did what my heavenly Father will do to you if you do not forgive your brother or sister from your heart." Ezekiel 18:31 (NIV), “Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed and get a new heart and a new spirit.” 1. Forgiveness is essential for healthy, lasting relationships Ruth Graham once said, “A good marriage is the union of two forgivers.” 2. Forgiveness has some important qualifiers

• Forgiveness does not mean an endorsement of behavior • Forgiveness does not mean restoration of trust immediately • Forgiveness does not always mean a complete restoration of the previous relationship • Forgiveness may not be our first response, but it is a command that we need to obey

Sermon Notes

William Jennings said, “If you act the way you wish you felt, eventually you’ll feel the way you act.”

• And even though forgiveness brings freedom, it’s not always where we would expect

“When we choose to forgive we are setting a prisoner free; and many times in that forgiveness we discover that the prisoner we set free is ourselves.” (Lewis Smeeds) 3. Our ability to forgive is based on God’s forgiveness of us Jeremiah 17:9, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can under-stand it?” Isaiah 53:6 (NCV), “We all have wandered away like sheep; each of us has gone his own way. But the LORD has put on him the punishment for all the evil we have done.” Paul wrote in Romans 5:8, “God demonstrated his love for us in that while we were still sin-ners Christ died for us.”

• It’s completely selfless • It’s not exclusive • It’s not a one-time offer

Luke 17:3-4, “If your brother sins, rebuke him. If he repents, forgive him. If he sins against you seven times in a day and seven times comes back to you and says, ‘I repent’, you for-give him.”

• And at times it seems unfair Dr. Les Parrott wrote, “This unnatural act of forgiveness takes a supernatural source to empower it, and that source is God.” Reflection…

Doug is a professor teaching English as a foreign language at a university in East Asia. His profession is teaching but his ministry is to form relationships with his students by engag-

ing them in activities outside the classroom. His prayer is that many will come to know the Lord through him developing personal relationships with his stu-dents. Prayer requests:

- The love and grace of the Lord Jesus Christ will be seen in him - His students will be open to hearing the Word of God and accepting it - The power of the Holy Spirit will give him wisdom and creativity - He will be leading a Bible study for two of his students who have

shown interest in spiritual things. One student is close to accepting Christ and one is seeking.

- Good health and adequate sleep - His English Department director (as well as other Christian staff) is

under intense scrutiny by the government. This makes it very diffi-cult for them to do ministry with their students. Please pray that they will withstand the attacks of the enemy and that God’s peace with uphold them as they seek to be a good witness in spite of adversity.

JULY IS MOVIN’ ON UP MONTH IN JOURNEY KIDZ LIVE! ZONE School is out and it's time to move on up! Our kids are so excited to be one grade older, and we are ready to match their excitement! Our LIVE! Zone grades may begin moving up starting TODAY, July 6th. (Reminder: Tot Zone children move up based on age.) We know that change is fun, but it can also feel a little scary for some of our younger students, specifically our Kindergarteners. So, as parents, we invite you to help them transition by joining their class any Sunday of your choosing during the month of July. We really encourage you to take a Sunday in July to join with us, get to know their teachers, help them get settled in, and be a part of the fun that goes on downstairs! Looking forward to continuing to partner with your families!
