Sermon Notes

The Discipline of Celebration Proverbs 17:22, “A cheerful heart does good like medicine, but a broken spirit makes one sick.” Lewis Smedes wrote, “To miss out on joy is to miss out on the reason for your existence.” C.S. Lewis, “Joy is the serious business of heaven.” Celebrations remind us of what God has done in the past

o “The Feast of the Passover”

o “The Feast of the Unleavened Bread”

o “The Feast of Tabernacles” also known as “The Feast of Booths and Ingathering”

Leviticus 23:39-43 (MSG), “So, summing up: On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, after you have brought your crops in from your fields, celebrate the Feast of God for seven days. The first day is a complete rest and the eighth day is a complete rest. On the first day, pick the best fruit from the best trees; take fronds of palm trees and branches of leafy trees and from willows by the brook and celebrate in the presence of your God for seven days—yes, for seven full days celebrate it as a festival to God. Every year from now on, celebrate it in the seventh month. Live in booths for seven days—every son and daughter of Israel is to move into booths so that your descendants will know that I made the People of Israel live in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt. I am God, your God.” Deuteronomy 16:15 (MSG), “Celebrate the Feast to God, your God, for seven days at the place God designates. God, your God, has been blessing you in your harvest and in all your work, so make a day of it—really celebrate!” Nehemiah 8:10 (NLT), “And Nehemiah continued, “Go and celebrate with a feast of rich foods and sweet drinks, and share gifts of food with people who have nothing prepared. This

is a sacred day before our Lord. Don’t be dejected and sad, for the joy of the Lord is your strength!” Nehemiah 12:27 (CEV), “ When the city wall was dedicated, Levites from everywhere in Judah were invited to join in the celebration with songs of praise and with the music of cymbals, small harps, and other stringed instruments.” Larry the Cable Guy once said, “How come the Jews get to have 7 celebrations and as far as I can see, the Christians only get to have 3: Christmas, Easter and the Daytona 500!” Celebrations remind us of what God is doing in the present John Ortberg, “One day a week devote a specific day to acts of celebration: eat foods you love, listen to music that moves your soul, play a sport that stretches and challenges you, read books that refresh your spirit, wear clothes that make you happy, surround yourself with beauty and give thanks to God for his wonderful goodness. Take time to experience and savor joy, then direct your heart to God so that you come to know He is the giver of every good and per-fect gift.” Dietrich Bonhoeffer, “God cannot endure that un-festive, mirthless attitude of ours in which we eat our bread in sorrow, with pretentious, busy haste, or even with shame. Through our daily meals He is calling us to rejoice, to keep holiday in the midst of our working day.” Philippians 4:4 (MSG), “Celebrate God all day, every day. I mean, revel in him!” John 10:10, “I have come to give you life and to give it to you more abundantly.” John 15:11 (NLT), “I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!” Romans 12:12, “Be joyful in hope, patient in affection, faithful in prayer.” Psalm 118:24 (CEV), “This day belongs to the Lord! Let’s celebrate and be glad today.” Celebrations remind us of what God has done for our future Jesus said, “There are many rooms in my Father's house; I would not tell you this if it were not true. I am going there to prepare a place for you. After I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me so that you may be where I am.” (John 14:2-3 NCV) John writes, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and He will live with them. They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (Revelation 21:3-4)

Coming Up

LADIES’ COFFEE BREAK - NEW STUDY BEGINS IN DECEMBER Psalms: Authentic Worship for Today's Women by Sue Edwards Ladies’ Coffee Break, which meets every Thursday at 10am, will begin in Psalms on December 5th. We will be doing a mixed study between this book and one other. We will be gleaning many lessons from the Psalms in a way to enhance our worship, but also in a way to learn the importance of sharing our most anguishing moments with our Lord in prayer. Ms. Ed-wards’ quote from the first lesson: “Today, faithful believers all over the world will open their Bibles to Psalms—and some will burst into song or prayer. They will sing with others or pray alone. The Psalms speak when we are full of joy, but also when unexpected circumstances block the sunshine.” For more information, contact Wallene Frank - [email protected].

MISSIONS TEAM MEETING DECEMBER 8TH Join us in the Sleepers’ Nursery right after the second service. Lunch will be provided.

For more information contact: Gary Ulrich - [email protected]

REFUEL’S RAKE & RUN NOVEMBER 24TH Refuel is hosting a “Rake & Run” on November 24th from 1 - 4pm., and everyone is invited to participate! What’s a “Rake & Run?” Good question! Basically, we will go out into the

surrounding neighborhood with our rakes, gloves and trash bags, volunteering to rake our neighbors’ yards! We will have lunch first, so please sign up in the lobby if you are going to participate so we can make sure we have enough food. For more information contact Adam Schuster - [email protected].

ANNUAL THANKSGIVING DINNER NOVEMBER 24TH!

Everyone is invited to our Annual Thanksgiving Dinner. We will have a pot luck dinner complete with Turkey and all the trimmings on NOVEMBER 24TH at Key Middle School. Turkey and the trimmings will be provided, but we would ap-preciate your signing up in the lobby to bring your favorite side dish and dessert (large enough to feed 8 –10) to share, and invite your family and friends to join us for a blessed time of food and fellowship.

Sign up to join a family at their home for Thanksgiving! Let us know how many, and whether you have chil-dren - and we’ll match you up. Sign up sheets are on the table in the lobby.

that need to be done. Be prepared for a great day of fellowship while we work to spruce up our church! If you have any questions, please contact Don Davis at [email protected].

ONLINE GIVING NOW AVAILABLE! The Journey now offers the option of giving online. Just go to thejourneysite.org, click on the “online giving” tab, and you can make your donations to either the Journey’s General Fund, or to the Capital

Gifts Campaign. It’s that easy!

JOURNEY MEALS TO GO UPDATE Just had a baby? Need Food? We're here for you. Surgery, Illness? We've got you covered.... We are your Church Family! Contact Lisa Steedsman or Abby Bulliner at [email protected] and we will start a mealtrain for you. A mealtrain is the act of organizing meal giving around significant life events. We will need some information such as your address, when you need the meals to

start, and any allergies that you or your family may have.

Enjoy blessing others with food? We're looking for you, too! It is a win-win. You feel great, and the recipient loves you! Ask Lisa. You can also buy them pizza or takeout if you don't have the time to cook:) They will still love you. Trust us. Please let Lisa or Abby know if you'd be interested in this ministry and we will add you to our database of volunteers. You will then receive an email when there is a need and can sign up to deliver at your convenience! Our goal is to provide 5 meals for

each significant event.
