Sermon Outline

2 Kings 21:6,12 (CEV), “He did many sinful things and made the Lord very angry. … Now I, the Lord God of Israel, will destroy both Jerusalem and Judah! People will hear about it but won’t believe it.” 2 Chronicles 33:10-11 (CEV), “The Lord tried to warn Manasseh and the people about their sins, but they ignored the warning. So he let Assyrian army commanders invade Judah and capture Manasseh. They put a hook in his nose and tied him up in chains, and they took him to Babylon.” Jeremiah:2:9-13, “Because of all this, I’m bringing charges against you, God’s Decree, charging you and your children and your grandchildren. Look around. Have you ever seen anything quite like this? Sail to the western islands and look. Travel to the Kedar wilderness and look. Look closely. Has this ever happened before, that a nation has traded in its gods for gods that aren’t even close to gods? But my people have traded my glory for empty god-dreams and silly god-schemes. ‘Stand in shock, heavens, at what you see! Throw up your hands in disbelief—this can’t be!’ God’s Decree: ‘My people have committed a compound sin: they’ve walked out on me, the fountainof fresh flowing waters, and then dug cisterns—cisterns that leak, cisterns that are no better than sieves.’”

1st of all… When we are digging and drinking from our own cisterns instead of God’s living water, the constant digging will spiritually wear us out. 2ndly… As long as you rely on your own cisterns, there will always be this bitter aftertaste that will just stay with you.

Jeremiah 2:19, “Your wickedness will bring its own punishment. Your turning from me will shame you. You will see what an evil, bitter thing it is to abandon the Lord your God and not to fear him. I, the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, have spoken!”

3rdly… You and I are not here by accident; God has a purpose to fulfill in and through our lives

Part 2

Sermon Notes

Jeremiah 1:4-9 (NCV), “The Lord spoke his word to me, saying: ‘Before I made you in your mother’s womb, I chose you. Before you were born, I set you apart for a special work. I ap-pointed you as a prophet to the nations.’” “Then I said, ‘But Lord God, I don’t know how to speak. I am only a boy.’ But the Lord said to me, ‘Don’t say, “I am only a boy.” You must go everywhere I send you, and you must say eve-rything I tell you to say. Don’t be afraid of anyone, because I am with you to protect you,’ says the Lord. Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth. He said to me, ‘See, I am putting my words in your mouth.’” Lamentations 3:19-23 (NCV), “Lord, remember my suffering and my misery, my sorrow and trouble. Please remember me and think about me. But I have hope when I think of this: The Lord’s love never ends; his mercies never stop. They are new every morning; Lord, your loyalty is great.” Reflection…

As we begin this new year, we just want to take a moment to thank all of our ministry team leaders for stepping forward to serve God with their gifts and abilities. Opportunities to Serve

THE BULLETIN IS NOW ONLINE! … well, it’s actually been on there for awhile, we just wanted to make sure you know! If you would like to save some paper, you can down-load the bulletin from our website. Just go to thejourneysite.org, click on the “Media & Resources” page, then on “This Week at the Journey” - and click on the date of the bulletin that you need. The bulletin for the current Sunday is normally available by 5pm the Saturday before if you

need to download it before you come to church.

Koinonia, one of our long-time local mission partners, is current-ly in search of volunteers in our Food Pantry and Clothing Clos-et. The Food Pantry needs a volunteer to come in every other Friday morning from 9am to Noon. The Clothing Closet needs a

volunteer to come in every Thursday from 3pm to 6pm. No previous experience necessary, train-ing provided! If you, or anyone you know, would be interested in taking on any of these assignments, please call Julie at 703-922-8327

HAVE ANY OF YOUR DISHES GONE MISSING? Over the course of time, a number of casserole and serving dishes have found their way into the Take 5 area and/or the cart in the lobby at the Journey - could one of them be yours? Please feel free to check those areas to see if any of your wayward dishes have ended up there. We’ll keep them until the end of December, at which time we will find them a new home. Please feel free to contact Vicki Becker at [email protected] if you have any questions.

COMMUNION PREPARATION FOR 2014 Have you been looking for a place to serve at the Journey? We need people to prepare communion. We need people to prep & set up before 1st service and between services, someone to clean up after 2nd service, and someone to do prep, set up and clean up for the 3rd service! You’ll see a sign up sheet in the lobby reflecting these three areas. Normally sign up is on a monthly basis, but if you can only serve one or two weeks in a month, that’s OK, too! Easy to follow instructions and all supplies are provided. If you can help, sign up on the sheet in the lobby, or just talk to Judy Davis. For more information, contact the Jour-ney office.
