BY NEIL SPERRY

Dear Neil: I have a Shu-mard red oak (photos at-tached) that is approximate-ly six years old. It’s about 30 feet tall and has grown well. For the past two years, half of the tree’s foliage has been lime-green or yellow. Why would it appear sick on one side and not on the other?

Your tree is lovely and it obviously got off to a good start. Your photos showed things very clearly, includ-ing the fact that it’s prob-ably not a true Shumard red oak. The cause of the tree’s trouble is iron defi ciency. If the soil in your area is alka-line, that alone is your prob-lem. Sadly, there won’t be much you can do in the long run to turn things around. You can add iron now, either by surface application or by injection by an arborist, but that will only buy you two or three years. Sadly, if the identifi cation is cor-rect, the tree will eventually turn completely yellow, then white and scorched. I have taken the position of advis-ing gardeners with your sit-uation to replace their trees immediately. Your next step should be to confi rm the species by taking samples to a couple of nurseries and asking their opinion. If it was actually labeled as a Shumard red oak when you bought it, you should also visit with the nursery that sold it to you.

Dear Neil: What is wrong with my red oleanders? This is their fi fth year. They have fl owered a lot, but the leaves are falling off. Can you help me? (Photos attached.)

Thank you for the very clear photographs. They help immensely with iden-tifying your problem. Look closely at the branches. The yellowed leaves are all older leaves (last year’s leaves). The new growth is doing fi ne. While it’s normal for evergreen plants, including oleanders, to shed all their old leaves at some point, it’s unusual for them to be so dramatic about it. Let them run their course. Apply a high-nitrogen fertilizer and water the plants well. Time will take care of your prob-lem.

Dear Neil: Last year we planted a magnolia tree. It did fi ne for the year, but we noticed recently that the tree had discolored leaves on it. The leaves eventually dropped, and now the tree is beginning to look less green

and the leaves are continu-ing to fall. Is this a lack of fertilizer, or is it some kind of fungus?

This is actually the same answer as for the olean-ders. Magnolias drop their prior year’s leaves in April and May. At the same time the new leaves will be de-veloping. The fact that this year’s growth is not as dark as you would expect is prob-ably due to lack of nitrogen. Apply a good lawn food (no weedkiller included), and water the tree deeply.

Dear Neil: I have 150 feet of property, and I’d like to plant a screen that grows rapidly and covers thickly. It doesn’t have to have fl owers.

I was thinking about Thuja. How well will it do? How fast does it grow? Is there a better choice?

Arborvitaes of various types would be good, but rather enclosing visually. They are dense, but not fast. There may be better options. You didn’t mention how tall you want the screen to grow. That would have helped give you a better answer. For 10- to 15-foot screens I would suggest Nellie R. Stevens or yaupon hollies. For 15- to 20-foot plants, Japanese ligustrum would be good, as would cherry laurels in acidic soils. Old-fashioned Chinese photinias would be outstanding in that same size if they were available in

nurseries. Redtip photinias, however, are not a good op-tion due to Entomosporium fungal leaf spot which is devastating that species nationally. The best of the tall screens would be east-ern redcedar junipers, Little Gem or Teddy Bear mag-nolias and even live oaks. Spacing will vary with the type you choose. Let your nurseryman advise you.

Dear Neil: How can we keep a woodpecker and wrens off our hummingbird feeder? The poor hummers don’t have a chance. We do have a bird bath about 5 feet from the feeder.

This horticulturist will at-tempt to give an ornithologi-

cal answer. Either move the birdbath or the humming-bird feeder. It sounds like congested air space. (That’s assuming the woodpeckers and wrens aren’t actually dining on the mix you’re putting into your feeder.)

Dear Neil: Squirrels are making a mess out of my pot plants. They are digging up newly planted pots, also older and more established plants. I’ve tried red pepper fl akes sprinkled on top of the ground, also mothballs at different times. Neither has helped. Any suggestions?

You may be able to cut some small pieces of a roll-type mulch or chicken wire to fi t over the soil surface

until the plants can get root-ed. Your main goal will be tochange the pattern of theirhabits. You might also beable to place golf ball-sizedrocks on top of the soil todiscourage them. For an ex-treme case, it might even bepossible to rig up some typeof motion detector to turn ona light or sound a loud noiseanytime they came into itsfi eld of vision.

!

COUNSELING

ASSOCIATION

Friendships are an es-sential part of feeling good about yourself and enjoying positive mental health. But good friendships take time to develop and require both parties to make an effort to build a relationship.

One of the most important elements in a strong friend-ship is communication. That means not simply being able to talk with each other but actually being able to “com-municate” about important matters. For such commu-nication to take place, and a friendship to grow and de-velop, being able to listen is a vital skill most of us need to develop better.

You can see the effect of poor listening skills just by observing how various peo-

ple listen to what you have to say. You’ll soon notice that some people closely pay at-tention to your words and communicate back that they understand what you’ve been saying.

On the other hand, poor listeners are often distract-ed, pay little attention to your words, give almost no feedback and may misinter-pret what you were trying to communicate.

In most cases, you’ll fi nd it’s the good listener with whom you have a better re-lationship. Developing your own good listener skills can help improve friendships, family communications and even work relationships. Fortunately, developing such skills isn’t diffi cult.

One key to good listening is simply to listen more than you talk. Avoid the impulse to interrupt with your own

stories and experiences. As a good listener you want to hear what the other person has to say, not to try and top his or her story with a better one of your own.

As a good listener you also want to show you’ve under-stood what’s being said. If something isn’t totally clear, ask for clarifi cation. Show you’re been paying attention by feeding back key parts of the conversation, then sum-marize what you’ve heard as a way of ending your con-versation.

Learning to be a better lis-tener is a key skill for build-ing stronger relationships of every type. Do you really listen when your child has a story to tell about his or her school day? Do you pay attention when your spouse wants to summarize the day’s events over dinner? Do you only half hear what a

work colleague has to say?Learning to listen well

can make every relationship function better, and it can also help those closest to you learn to respect and lis-ten to your words when you have something to share.

Davidson has a 3.875 GPA and is a member of the BNSF Next Generation Leadership Program at Nee-ley School of Business and the Chancellor’s Leadership Program.

She is president of Alpha Phi Omega community ser-vice fraternity, fi nancial vice president of Alpha Delta Phi national sorority and direc-tor of community relations for Pan-Hellenic Council.

She has volunteered with the American Cancer So-ciety, Ronald McDonald House, Boys and Girls Club, Humane Society and Ameri-can Diabetes Society.

She is an ESL teacher of Somalia Bantu refugees and a facilitator for Multi-Cul-ture Leadership.

In her winning essay, Davidson discussed how

her term as presi-dent of Alpha Phi Omega community service fraternity allowed her to put her research of leadership skills and styles to work.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of my position is the ability to em-power others,” she

said.

“A student and/or com-munity leaders is not a title; it is a way of thinking and learning from situations and people who surround you.

“Establishing leadership requires being self-aware, socially competent and en-gaging in empathy between people and in teams.”

WHAT IS NORMAL IN EARLY MEN-STRUATION?

The timing of a girl’s fi rst period can

vary greatly. Some girls start men-

struating when they are as young as

9 while others don’t start until they are

teenagers. After a girl’s fi rst period, it

can take up to two years before she

has any regularity in her cycle. Al-

though the typical menstrual cycle

lasts 28 days, normal can range from

22 days to 45 days. Girls often expe-

rience abdominal cramping, but it is

not normal for a girl to need to stay

home from school or other activities

because of the pain. A very heavy

blood fl ow can be cause for concern.

Sometimes, adolescent girls have

an imbalance in their hormones that

causes them to have unusually heavy

periods.

Devon Energy Corporation is con-tinuing its rapid production growth in the Barnett Shale, surpassing average daily output of 1 billion cubic feet of natural gas equivalent for the month of April.

Devon, the Barnett’s largest produc-er, reached the 1 billion cubic feet per day target 21 months ahead of sched-ule. Devon’s output in the Barnett is now equivalent to about 2 percent of the nation’s daily supply of natural gas. That is enough energy to heat 13,250 homes for a year.

“The Barnett Shale is an exciting fi eld for Devon and the entire indus-

try, and it has become one of the most important single sources of domestic energy for our nation,” said Stephen J. Hadden, Devon’s senior vice president, exploration and production. “We are thrilled with our rapid growth in the Barnett, and we are eager to continue using technology and innovation to ad-vance growth in the coming years.”

Since acquiring its position in the Barnett in 2002, Devon has been adapting innovations such as hori-zontal drilling, enhanced fracturing techniques, seismic analysis and com-pression reduction. As a result, the company has increased drilling effi -

BUSINESS

In response to direct customer feed-back citing the prospect of rising gas prices as a top concern, Karl Klement Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep in Decatur an-nounces its own economic stimulus package: an exclusive gas price protec-tion policy that eliminates the risk of further spikes in fuel prices.

With the U.S. purchase of eligible Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles, customers can enroll in the “Let’s Re-fuel America” program and receive a gas card that immediately lowers their gas price to $2.99 a gallon, and keeps it there for three years. The offer is available through June 2 on vehicles ranging from popular new compacts, crossovers and minivans to full-size diesel-powered pickup trucks.

“We are proud to introduce an un-

precedented program to help put De-catur-area customers’ minds at ease and do something to help working people who are worried about the vola-tility of fuel prices and vehicle cost of ownership,” said Robert E Bishop Jr., Klement’s general manager.

The Let’s Refuel America gas card program works when a customer pur-chases a new Chrysler, Jeep or Dodge vehicle and selects the program in lieu of other available incentives. The cus-tomer is provided with the registration process documentation and registers providing their required personal in-formation via the dedicated Web site or toll-free 800 number.

Once registered, the customer re-ceives their gas card and separately, their Personal Identifi cation Number

(PIN) within 4 to 6 weeks of applica-tion. The customer then swipes their Let’s Refuel America Gas Card at an eligible gas station, selecting up to 87 octane regular, E85 fuel or diesel fuel, and enters their PIN to begin the fuel-ing process.

After the fuel transaction occurs, the customer’s personal credit card (iden-tifi ed in the registration process) is charged $2.99 per gallon.

Chrysler currently offers six models that get better than 28 miles-per-gal-lon on the highway: Chrysler Sebring, Chrysler Sebring Convertible, Dodge Avenger, Jeep Compass, Jeep Patriot and Dodge Caliber.

Through April, these models com-bined have higher sales than in the fi rst four months of 2007.

Dear Savvy SeniorWhat all can be done to

combat dry eye? Blinking Bonnie

Dear Bonnie,While there’s currently no

cure for dry eye, there are plenty of things you can do to keep your symptoms un-der control. Here’s what you should know.

Dry eyesItching, burning and

even gritty-feeling eyes are among the most common reasons for visits to the eye doctor – and the older you get, the more likely you are to have these symptoms. The condition, known as dry eye syndrome, affects millions of Americans, most of whom are over the age of 40. But discomfort isn’t the only is-sue. Light sensitivity and blurred or fl uctuating vision are common symptoms too, and worse yet, dry eyes are more likely to get scratched

or infected, which could dam-age your vision permanently.

Why it happens People get dry eye syn-

drome because they either don’t produce enough tears to keep their eyes properly lubricated, or because they produce poor quality tears. In some cases dry eye is caused by other medical conditions (such as diabetes, allergies, rosacea, rheumatoid arthri-tis, lupus and Sjogren’s syn-drome) and treating these conditions could alleviate the problem. But for other sufferers it can be caused by age (tear production tends to diminish as you age), eye conditions, eyelid problems, certain medications, envi-ronmental factors and even LASIK surgery. Dry eye syn-drome is also more common in women, especially after menopause.

RemediesThe fi rst step in dealing

with dry eyes is to check your lifestyle and surround-ings for factors that might be contributing to the problem and make adjustments: ■ Air check: Furnaces in

the winter and air condition-ing in the summer dry out the air and can worsen dry eyes. So buy a humidifi er and keep your home humidity between 30 and 50 percent. Also keep your eyes away from blowing air – oscillating and ceiling fans, air vents – which add to the problem. ■ Blink: When you’re read-

ing, watching television or using a computer, take fre-quent breaks because these activities cause you to blink less often. ■ Avoid irritants: Avoid

smoke-fi lled places and if you swim, wear goggles to cut down exposure to chemi-cals.■ Outside protection:

When you go outdoors, use

sunglasses that wrap around the sides of your face. This will help you protect yourself better from sun, glare, wind, and dust.■ Check your meds: An-

tihistamines and deconges-tants, diuretics, beta-block-ers, antidepressants and over-the-counter sleeping pills can all cause dry eyes. If you’re taking any of these, ask your doctor about alter-natives. ■ Omega-3s: Studies show

that eating more fi sh and other foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (or take a supple-ment) helps some people. ■ Warm compresses: For

a soothing, temporary treat-ment, place damp warm compresses on your eyes (use cold compresses if your dryness is due to allergies or rosacea) and gently massage the edges of your eyelids.

TreatmentsIf changing your environ-

ment and habits doesn’t do the trick, there are a variety of over-the-counter eye lubri-cant drops (artifi cial tears) that can help. However some lubricants contain preserva-tives that may irritate your eyes. If you experience a lot of burning, try another prod-uct or opt for a nonpreserva-tive formula, but don’t buy eye drops that are strictly made to “get the red out.” They won’t help and may even aggravate your condi-tion. Also available are over-the-counter gel lubricants that stay on your eye longer and lid scrubs for those with eyelid infl ammation.

If the over-the-counter remedies don’t help, see your eye doctor for other options which could be prescription steroid eye drops, or a pre-scription medication called Restasis. Your doctor may suggest punctal plugs if these don’t help. The plugs

are small blockers insertedinto the tear ducts to slow thedrainage of eye moisture.

And fi nally, if all remediesand treatments fail, two oth-er possible solutions includespecially designed goggles(see www.panoptx.com) thatform a moisture chamberaround the eye, and the Bos-ton Scleral Lens (see www.bostonsight.org) which is acustom-fi tted prosthetic de-vice that creates a reservoirover the cornea.

4-H activities offer young people many exciting op-portunities for personal de-velopment. These activities often are a part of their proj-ects. For example, a community beau-tifi cation project group might tour a local nursery to learn more about planting and tak-ing care of shrubs. However, a 4-H club will also plan many activities not related to a project. For ex-ample, a club may tour an area of historic interest. To add spice to your 4-H pro-gram, consider offering dem-onstrations and illustrated talks, judging activities, community service projects, exhibits, tours, National 4-H Week observances, recre-ational activities and camp-ing trips.

Demonstrations and illustrated talks

“Show me how,” “Let me see you do it” and “I’ll show you” are heard often when 4-H members work and learn together. Preparing and pre-

senting demonstrations and illustrated talks help 4-H members gain additional knowledge and learn new skills and practices. Young-er members start with

easy-to-do “show and tell” presen-tations. Members often need help from their leader in choosing a topic and a suitable way to present it. The topic should be of interest to the member, simple to do and something the member can do or learn to do

well. Once the topic is cho-sen, the 4-H’er next must decide whether to plan a demonstration or an illus-trated talk. If the topic is one that can be explained best by making or doing something and results in a fi nished product, the mem-ber should prepare a demon-stration. However, if he can best show and tell how to do something with drawings, maps, models or pictures, a better choice of presentation may be an illustrated talk. By giving demonstrations and illustrated talks, youths learn to:

■ Develop or improve skills■ Increase their knowl-

edge and express them-selves well■ Develop poise and con-

fi dence■ Develop initiative■ Earn recognition.Regular 4-H meetings or

project meetings are good settings for demonstrations. Service and civic clubs, com-munity groups and other or-ganizations offer additional opportunities for giving demonstrations. Please call the Extension offi ce (940) 627-3341 if you have any questions.

Livestock and Forage committees from Jack and Wise County have planned a forage fi eld day for Tues-day, June 3, at the Chris-tian Brothers Ranch eight miles west of Runaway Bay on U.S. 380. The entrance is on the south side of U.S. 380 just past Gafford Lane. Reg-istration will begin at 5 p.m. with the program to begin at 5:30 p.m. Private applica-tors will receive three CEU’s for their pesticide license re-newal (two general and one in laws and regulations).

Chuck Coffey, forage spe-cialist with the Noble Foun-dation will be on hand to discuss establishment of permanent grasses and how to select the right grass for your situation. Participants will have the opportunity to view the 17 warm sea-son grasses in the test plots at the Christian Brothers Ranch. The plots include several bermudagrasses and a sampling of other in-troduced grasses such as Klein, Eastern Gamagrass, wwb.dahl, ww spar and wil-man lovegrass. Mr. Coffey will also spend some time discussing legumes for the north Texas area and the use of crabgrass in your for-age rotation.

Participants will also have the op-portunity to tour the weed control plots at the same location. Weed plots were established using Grazon, Ban-vel + 2,4-D, Grazon Next and Mile-stone.

The program is being sponsored by Dow AgriSciences and Texas AgriLife Extension Service.

Private applicator training and test

A private applicator train-

ing and test has been scheduled for Tuesday, June 10, at the County Ex-tension offi ce. Cost of the training is $30 and includes lunch. The training will be held from 8 a.m.-noon. The test will be given at 1 p.m.

A recent and comprehensive review of women’s experiences shows that many pregnant women’s expectations of a pain- and drug-free delivery differ signifi cantly from the actual events. The fact is that while women may have ideal hopes regarding their deliveries, they must prepare themselves for the reality so that they do not become disillusioned. A fuller understanding of what might happen better prepares women to make decisions. For the most part, however, there is a disconnect between many pregnant women’s expectations about pain management, how long pain will last, and how much control they will have and the realities of giving birth. By distinguishing between expectations and reality, women can exert a better grasp on the decisions facing them.

Whether you’re pregnant for the fi rst time or are expecting the latest addition to your family, this time in your life requires excellent care for you and your developing baby. At our practice, we have delivered thousands of babies and are highly experienced with all aspects of pregnancy and delivery, from normal to high-risk. To schedule an appointment, call WISE OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY P.A. at 940-626-8008. Our offi ce is conveniently located at 1713 South FM

51, Ste. 201, Decatur. New patients are welcome.

Remember that it’s important to have an annual physical to prevent disease and it’s important to seek early prenatal care.

According to the study mentioned above, it helps pregnant women to identify the aspects of labor that most concern them so that they may be

adequately addressed.
