    By NEIL SPERRY

    Dear Neil: We purchased

    home last year where the

    revious owners planted two

shade trees on the west side

of the house. While they cast

    shade, their roots are tear-

ing up the yard, and theyre

    heading toward our beds

    and the sidewalk. Do we

    need to remove and replace

    them?

    Your trees roots really

are shallow, as visible fromyour photo. Most trees roots

will be in the top foot ofsoil, so replacing the treesmay not help much in the

long run. You could planta trailing, shade-tolerant

groundcover, such as Asianasmine or purple winter-

creeper euonymus, to growover and conceal the roots,or you could remove one or

two roots each fall, after thehot weather has passed. Cut

the roots where they threat-en concrete, and consider

    trenching and installing aroot barrier.

    Dear Neil: Many of the

    top leaves of my Dracaena

    marginata suddenly are

    half-sized. They look like

    theyve been chewed in half

    by some kind of parasite.

    What would cause that?

That is one type of dra-caena that requires very

strong (almost full) sunlightto succeed. Most of its prob-

lems stem from a lack oflight. Plants in dark corners

grow lanky, spindly and lookalmost wilted. I couldnt tellfrom your note if the leaves

were actually chewed. If so,there would have to be a

caterpillar, grasshopper orother feeding pest. Unless

you have the plant outdoors, that is almost impossible.

Dear Neil: How can I get

bluegrass out of my St. Au-

    gustine? We have our lawn

    sprayed every year, but the

    bluegrass keeps spreading.

You need to take samplesof your weed to a garden

center and have a TexasCertified Nursery Profes-

sional confirm exactly whatweed you have. Its probably

not a true bluegrass, as theywont hold up to St. Augus-tine in our Texas heat. Even

the common weed, annualbluegrass seldom gets a

root-hold in St. Augustine. You may have nutsedge or

dallisgrass instead, and thecontrols for all three weedsis quite different.

    Dear Neil:A homeowner

    in our neighborhood sprayed

    wasp and hornet killer, and

the drift got on their lawn.

    The grass turned brown

    overnight. Will it come back?

    What needs to be done?

    It should come back with-

out much care on your part. Its usually the propellant

that is used to carry theinsecticide that damages

plants leaves. It can ruinbranches on shrubs, butgrass is usually more resil-

    ient.

    Dear Neil: I am sending

photos of a dogwood tree I

planted in my yard six years

ago. It has done well un-

    til this spring. It developed

buds, but it did not bloom,

    and the top branches are

    completely bare. It is send-

    ing out shoots from around

its base. Im afraid Ive lost

    the top. What could have

    caused that?

It does appear that the tophas died. Sadly, its impossi-

ble to tell the possible causeof the problem from your

very good photos. Its goingto be something odd. I losttwo small dogwoods many

years ago because I didntsee a wire that had secured

a nursery tag around theirtrunks. They ended up being

girdled and ruined. It couldalso have been leftover dam-age of recent droughts, or it

    could have been weedkiller

    damage.

Dear Neil: I read youranswer on using Canadian

peat moss for Take All Root

    Rot in St. Augustine. Where

can I get my grass tested?

How can I figure how many

    bales of peat to buy?

The Plant Disease Diag-nostic Laboratory at Texas

A&M in College Station isan outstanding source of re-

liable diagnosis. Your coun-ty office of Texas AgriLifeExtension can give you the

necessary contact informa-tion and instructions. The

peat bales will be measuredin cubic feet. A 4-cubic-foot

bale would cover approxi-mately 50 square feet at 1-inch of depth. It fluffs up a

good bit when you take itout of the compressed bales,

so figure one bale per 100square feet. You might try

a couple of bales to see howit works. If it helps dramati-cally, you might forego the

    lab analysis.

    Dear Neil: I wanted to

    plant Italian cypress next

    to columns on my house,

but Ive been told they need

    sunlight. What would be bet-

ter for shade in that same

    growth habit?

Will Fleming yaupon hollyis columnar, and it will toler-

ate shade. It tends to splayout as it matures, so be pre-pared to use plant ties to

hold it in place if necessary.

    Take photos to a professional

nurseryman, and ask whatother options might fit with

the rest of your garden de-sign. It might be that youd

do as well with another typeof plant that wasnt so dra-matically upright.

    !

    Have a question youd

    like Neil to consider? Mail

it to him in care of the Wise

Skin cancer is the mostcommon cancer in the

nited States. In fact, onein three Texans will be di-

agnosed with skin cancerat some point in their life.

In recognition of Skin Can-cer Awareness Month, here

are some pointers to use sothat your skin will be pro-tected from the sun.

According to the pam-phlet Play it Safe in the

Sun developed by Dr. Car-ol Rice of Texas AgriLife

Extension, skin cancer isusually curable if caught

early, and the best newsabout skin cancer is that itis easily preventable by fol-

lowing these simple steps:! Avoid the sun between

    the hours of 10 a.m. and 4p.m.

! Use sunscreen with anSPF of 15 or higher and re-

apply every 2 hours whilein the sun and after swim-ming or perspiring.

    People dont often

    associate children with arthritis.

However, arthritis is a term for a

    category including over 100 rheumatic

diseases that can affect any person

at any age. Rheumatic diseases can

originate in the connective tissue or

can be the result of an autoimmune

    disorder. A child with juvenile

rheumatoid arthritis will feel joint pain,

swelling, and stiffness. There might be

a history of recurring fever and fatigue.

    These symptoms can indicate another

problem, so be sure to consult yourchilds pediatrician. Dont be surprised

if the doctor calls in other experts to

help with a treatment program. Your

childs healthcare team might include a

    rheumatologist, a physical therapist, an

orthopedist, as well as the pediatrician.

Arthritis is a serious concern. Come

    toLOVETTE PEDIATRICS, 2401 S. FM

and caring specialists will evaluate and

P.S. Its unclear what the cause ofthe disease is, but genetics may play

    a part. Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis

TOTAL FITNESS IN4 MINUTES A DAY

4 minutes of revolutionary exercise equals to 45-60 minutes of traditional exercise

(i.e. weight lifting and running)? Did you know that the calories that you burn are

related to the amount of oxygen that your body consumes? What if you could work

12 times the muscle cells as traditional exercise?

Since I started 4 Minute Fitness five weeks ago, I have lost 20 pounds and have gone

from a size 24 to a size 18. Ive never been an athlete, but I can do anything for

4 minutes. I am so excited for my future. For the first time in my life, I am physically

fit, says Elizabeth Haley-Beaver, LVN from Decatur.

For complete information call us at 4 Minute Fitness at 940-393-3674 and come by our

gym at 1451 W. Business 380, 2B in Decatur (located next to 2K Pawn Shop) and take

the 4 minute workout. You decide for yourself. What do you have to lose? 4 minutes.

    Since 1856

Stroke is the third leading cause of death among American women,

and by 2050, projections show that death from stroke among women willexceed mens stroke deaths by 30 percent. Yet, despite the widespread

incidence of stroke and its consequences among women, significant

gender differences persist in terms of prevention and treatment, as well.

According to one group of researchers, women with ischemic stroke

(characterized by a clogged artery to the brain) were 14 percent less

likely to receive what the studys authors call perfect or defect-

free care. Women were also 16 percent less likely to be sent home

after a stroke, which means they were more likely than men to be

institutionalized. Such gender disparities need to be addressed.

At our office, our primary goal is to provide medical care that

combines expert technology with warm, personal attention to the

concerns of women and their families. To schedule your appointment

for gynecology or obstetrical care, call WISE OBSTETRICS &

GYNECOLOGY P.A. at 940-626-8008. Our office is conveniently

located at 1713 South FM 51, Ste. 201, Decatur. New patients are

    welcome.

P.S. Numbness or loss of function in the face, arms, legs, or one side

of the body, as well as a sudden headache, are symptoms that may beindicative of a stroke.
