    By SMATT

We envision a worldwhere everyone can explore

and create meaningful con-nections with the peopleand places [they] encounter.

    Couchsurfing.org VisionStatement

When I reached the Tex-arkana city limits, the first

thing I did was place a phonecall to a complete stranger.

is name was Michael, andhe had agreed, sight unseen,to host me for the evening.

Only a few weeks prior, Ihad heard a mountain lion

scream just a dozen yardsfrom where I was camping,

so an evening with a fellowhuman sounded like an ab-solute vacation.

Both Michael and themountain lion bring to mind

probably the second mostfrequently asked question

ve received while hik-ing the perimeter of Texas:Where do you sleep? A

glance at my backpack withits attached sleeping bag

is usually answer enough.Along the way, however, I

have also been put up byfamily, friends, and the oc-casional good Samaritan,

but many of these visitshave been spontaneous and

without much planning.Showing up to a big town

and not knowing a soul canbe a daunting reality, so twohundred miles into the trek,

signed up for an onlineresource, a Web site whose

name reflects the valuesand goals of many a lonely

traveler. The site I turned towas Couchsurfing.org.

    Couchsurfing is slang

for sleeping on someoneelses couch. On its most ba-

sic level, Couchsurfing.org isa way to travel around on a

shoestring budget, introduc-ing travelers to potential

hosts (and their couches) fora night or more. Its a moreintimate, less spontaneous

version of hitchhiking, butbecause the first point of con-

tact is done online, theres anice buffer zone for careful

reflection. Since 2004, itsbeen something of an inter-national phenomenon with

members in over 230 coun-tries and territories around

    the world.To the uninitiated, the

very mention of couchsurf-ing is usually accompa-

nied by the question Is thissafe? As luck would have

it, there is a button on theWeb site labeled Is

    This Safe? loadedwith general ad-

vice and suggestedguidelines, the moststraightforward be-

ing Use Your Com-mon Sense. Per-

    haps attributableto some of these

    tips and built-insafety mechanisms,Couchsurfing.org

boasts an incredible 99.6percent positive feedback

from all its facilitated con-nections between travelers

    and hosts.Of course, my parents

    were not excited about the

    idea, but once something as

big as my Texas hike slippedthrough their defenses, its

hard to put up much resis-tance to anything

else. Still, they voiced their opin

ions and told me tobe on my guard, asif the other guy was

    the one who wasdirty, disheveled,

    and hiking aroundthe state.

As it turns outMichael was an in-credible host. On

top of the comfy couch that Islept on, he arranged an in-

terview with the TexarkanaGazette, made breakfast ev-

ery morning, introduced meto his family and friends, showed me around town,

    Commitment Runs Deep

    Celebrating the Holiday Spirit

    By NEIL SPERRY

    Dear Neil: We have deer

in our area, and our neigh-bor has a huge Lady Bank-

sia rose that spills over theence and into our yard. Deer

ump the fence to get into ourard to strip it bare. Roses

    have been described as un-

alatable to deer, but mostlants that are so described

havent proven to be so. Onlysalvias and rosemary seem

    untouched. Comments?Most roses have enough

thorns that deer arent real-ly attracted to them. Howev-er, Lady Banksia is a thorn-

less type, which may explainwhy the deer relished it.

lus, when times are dry, deer will eat things they

normally would avoid. Theycan be such big problemswhere theyre common.

Dear Neil:Ive seen a lot of

    Chinese tallow trees in East

Texas in my travels this fall. Are they going to invade the

rest of the state like theyvedone to the Gulf Coast? Howcan they be stopped?

Its always amazing to seeintroduced plants move into

an area and crowd out theexisting native ones. Chi-

nese tallows were revered40 and 50 years ago for

bringing reliable fall colorto a part of America (SouthTexas) that seldom had

much flash in the fall. Then, however, we found it explod-

ing into wetlands acrossSoutheast Texas. Its not

too likely to spread very farnorth due to winter kill, andits not likely to go very far

west because it needs morewater than will be available.

Privet is doing the samething. Youll find thousands

of acres of woodlands thathave it growing beneath thetrees in the same way that

yaupon holly covers much ofSouth Central Texas woods.

Short of head-on assaultwith brush cutters, axes and

herbicides, theres no magicsolution once these plantsget started.

Dear Neil: I have a large

live oak in my back yard that

needs to have some branchesremoved. When is the best

time to do so? I dont wantto harm the tree, and I dontwant oak wilt to become a

    problem.Oak pruning is best done

during the coldest part ofthe winter, so your time is

here, now. Your second goodtime is during the hottest

part of the summer, namelylate July and August. Yourgoal is to do the pruning

when insect activity and oakwilt fungal outbreaks are

minimal. Spring is the worsttime. All oak cuts should be

protected with pruning seal-ant. (It is not recommendedfor use with other types of

trees than oaks.) If youreunsure of how to remove

branches from an estab-lished tree, you may want to

hire a certified arborist to dothe work for you. If you doit yourself, avoid stripping

bark off the main trunk asthe branches fall. Its best to

begin with an undercut ofthe branch being removed.

Cut about one-fourth of theway up into the branch frombelow. That cut should be

15-18 inches from the trunk.Second, cut completely

    through the branch, from

top to bottom, 3-4 inches far-ther out from the undercut.

The weight of the branchwill strip the bark off the

bottom of the limb, but onlyas far as the undercut. Thethird and final cut should

    be virtually flush with thetrunk.

Dear Neil: We live in a

new cul de sac, and were as-

tonished when the house nextto us was built within 7 feet

of our privacy fence. Whatcan we plant that will give

us year round screening? You didnt mention how

much space there is be-tween your house and yourfence. If that distance, too, is

only 7 feet, youll have to usesomething very compact.

Little Gem or Teddy Bearmagnolias would work well.

Little Gem is the larger ofthe two at maturity. Tree-form yaupon hollies are our

most common small ever-green screen. You could also

consider tree-form Nellie R.Stevens holly. Wax myrtles

are sometimes used in situ-ations like this, but manypeople find that they begin

to thin and die away just

    a few years after planting.

Consider adding a decora-tive trellis to the top of your

fence and growing an ever-green vine such as Carolina

jessamine or Climbing Pin-kie or Lady Banksia rose.(Roses are semi-evergreen

in much of Texas, droppingmany of their leaves in re-

    ally cold winters.)

    !

Have a question youdlike Neil to consider? Mail

it to him in care of the WiseCounty Messenger, P.O. Box149, Decatur, Texas 76234,

or e-mail him at [email protected]. Neil re-

grets that he cannot reply toquestions individually.

and lent me a computer towork on. We also discoveredwe shared a mutual friend.

y visit, which ended up be-ing three days long, was so

far removed from campingnear a wild cat that its hard

to reconcile the two eventsas part of the same trip.

    And yet they are. These

very different experiencesare united not only by my

project but by a commonpenetration into uncharted

territory. There is a gen-eral perception that the un-known is something to avoid,

but I disagree. Sure, I maynot have fully embraced this

ideology in the momentsthat followed the most pierc-

ing demonic scream Ive everheard in my life. However,

    still believe its a higher

good to jump into somethingnew every now and again,

if for no other reason than

to affirm the belief that the

world is an enormous, won-drous creation, not all of ituninviting.

    The holiday season brings

with it an overwhelmingspirit of generosity and lov-ing-kindness. Every where

you look people are throw-ing change into Salvation

Army buckets, taking angelsoff of the trees in order to

    give presents to the needy

and, donating food items topantries. Do you want more

ideas for how to give back toyour community?

The answer to theses ques-tions lies in one word: volun-

teerism. Dr. Martin Luthering, Jr. Once said, Every-

    one can be great because

anyone can serve. You donthave to have a college degree

to serve. You dont even haveto make your subject and

your verb agree to serve ...ou only need a heart full ofrace. A soul generated by

Some decisions are easier thanothers where your beef cattle op-eration is concerned. The decisionto creep feed or not creep feed isnot an easy one for most produc-ers. Like most aspects of the beefbusiness its a complex decisionthat should be analyzed each year

since there are a lot of variablesinvolved. Each producer shouldweigh their variables when making the de-cision if creep feeding is financially feasible

for them.Creep feeding simply put is a

way to supplement forage and milkfor unweaned calves with a feedsource not available to the mother.Creeping is usually done in freechoice feeders with feeds in the10-15 percent range. A 14 percentprotein pellet is the most popular.Nutritionists say forage quality isthe dominant factor in selecting

the protein level needed for creep-ing a set of calves. Therefore, if you

meet safety standards. First of all, never buy a toy small enough to fit inthe childs mouth. Keep in mindand

avoidtoys that shoot objects thatare smaller than the childs mouth.Purchase toys that do not have

sharp corners or edges. Steer clearof cords which can strangle. Alsoavoid toys that are too loud, and

this includes MP3 players, whichcan damage hearing. Check theequipment manual to find out how toadjust the maximum volume to a safe

level. Routinely inspect toys for signsof wear or broken parts, and toss

Abnormally heavy menstrual bleeding, known as menorrhagia, can

be symptomatic of conditions such as fibroids or endometrial cancer.

While treatment of these underlying problems can bring relief from

uncomfortable and fatigue-inducing bleeding, heavy periods with

no known cause lend themselves to other treatments. These include

hormonal drugs, which preserve a womans childbearing ability, and

hysterectomy (removal of the uterus). In addition, there is another

treatment option for women who no longer wish to bear children.

Endometrial ablation involves the removal of the endometrium (the

uterine lining). The procedure is less invasive than hysterectomy and can

be performed on an outpatient basis. Ablation techniques include the use

of radio waves, freezing, and hot water.

A correct diagnosis of menorrhagia is important, since the treatments

can have serious side effects. Women should feel confident that they

understand all of their options, address questions and voice opinions

with their doctor. If you have questions about todays column or

would like to schedule an appointment, call WISE OBSTETRICS &

    A tragic, yet not uncom-

    owners is that of animal

abuse. It is hard for many of

    us to believe how someone

    could inflict harm on such

    to behavioral issues of ag-
