Planning a family summervacation with a fair amountof driving? Although we

cant reduce the stress of to-days gas prices, we can offersuggestions to make trav-eling with your kids morepleasant.

Start by remembering howboring car trips can be forsomeone locked in that backseat. Entertainment dis-tractions, like books, games, puzzles and handheld elec-tronic games, can keep kidsoccupied, reduce boredomand avoid family stress.

Music is also a great paci-fier for kids, especially teens.

arbuds and an MP3 or por-

    table CD player mean hap-

pier traveling kids and quiettime for Mom and Dad. An-other popular option is aninexpensive (often under$100), portable DVD player.

A few DVDs and earphonesusually yield hours of quiet,

happy kids.Help your kids plan their

boredom breakers. Havethem pack a fighting bore-dom bag of fun goodies. Foryounger children, help themchoose a variety of engag-ing items, then hand themout one at a time during thetrip, including a couple ofnew surprises you snuck in.For car seat toddlers, havea basket of toys and as eachone gets dropped, just handover another. At the nextrest stop, put them back inthe basket and start over

    again.

Of course, youd also likethe kids to actually experi-ence some of the trip. Onetechnique is to have themmap out the travel route, listing landmarks and inter-esting things, before the trip.

Then let them track the tripprogress on the map and tellyou when something is com-ing up. Stopping at some ofthe most inviting ones keepskids involved, helps breakthe boredom, and providesopportunities to stretch andblow off steam. Plus youlloften see entertaining or en-lightening things.

And breaks, even shortones, do matter. Teens mightendure ten hours of driving, but most small kids willmelt down after six. Makethe journey, not just the des-

    tination, part of your vaca-

    tion fun.Finally, dont forget how

much food counts. A hungrychild is never a happy child.Bring along snacks and acooler of drinks, or makefrequent food stops. Well-fed

youngsters and teens makefor better traveling compan-ions.

Driving is often necessaryfor many family vacationsand still the most economi-cal way to travel with a fam-ily. With a little planning, lots of entertaining distrac-tions, and plenty of snacks, your family driving vacationcan not only be less stressful, but a lot more enjoyable.

Youd be surprised how many peoplesign real estate documents withoutever reading them. Then again, maybeyou wouldnt. Perhaps youve even putyour signature at the bottom of a con-tract or form that you merely skimmedover. I strongly advise against this.

    Whats written counts

From beginning to end, a real estatetransaction will present you with moreforms, disclosures, contracts and appli-

cations than just about any other ac-tivity youll ever undertake. You knowthe numbers on these documents mat-ter, but so do the words. In fact, if anyparty disputes who was obligated to dowhat and how or when those wordscarry more weight than any verbal

Wise County was wellrepresented at the 38th An-

nual State 4-H Dog Show inutto on July 11

and 12. In addition,it is the 100th year

of 4-H in the stateof Texas. The Cen-

tennial theme hasbeen a part of 4-Hactivities all year

    long. Youth from nu-

    merous Texascounties partici-pated, making it

one of the largestshows to date. More than

150 youth participated inthe Friday night grand en-

try. There were over 490entries in Obedience, RallyObedience, Showmanship

and Conformation Classeson Saturday. Many classes

had between 35-45 partici-pants, so our Wise County

youth that placed in the top10 showed that their hardwork all year paid off.

As tradition held, WiseCounty came home with top

honors in many areas. Onecategory dominated by our

Wise County youth is theObedience Ring, where theobedience instruction and

year-round practice guidedby 4-H Dog Project leader

    MONKEYING AROUND

Each year 15 million children are

    treated in hospital emergency rooms.

    The Consumer Product Safety Com-

    mission estimates that 200,000 inju-

ries a year are the result of playground

    equipment, such as slides, monkey

bars, jungle gyms, and simulated rock

    climbing units. Results of incidents

    stemming from childrens play are

    serious business within emergency

    medicine. Most playground equipment

injuries are minor cuts and bruises.

Many cuts and bruises can be treated

at home, but sometimes moms tenderkiss isnt enough. The risk of injury

posed by many types of playground

ties by spelling out what services the

broker will provide as well as details

    about compensation and duration of

    the agreement.

If theres anything you dont under-

stand about the listing or buyers rep-

    resentation agreement, ask your Tex-

as Realtor to explain it to you. Theseagreements are not typically complex,

but they do cover many specific and

    potential scenarios.

    Preview of

    coming attractions

Whether youre a buyer or seller, you

will eventually deal with a contract of-

fer. Most homebuyers and sellers use

a contract from the Texas Real Estate

    ommission. The contract for one-to

    our-family existing homes runs eight

ages. As you might imagine, it covers

uite a bit more than just the purchase

    rice.

You may want to go over the contract

and discuss it with your Texas Realtor

before making or receiving an offer.

That way, you can work out any con-

fusion before you find yourself facing

an important decision, possibly with a

    deadline looming.

If you dont read a blank contract be-

forehand, youll definitely want to look

at it closely with your Realtor when

you do fill it out or receive a contract

    offer from an interested buyer.

The contract is only one of many key

documents that go into a transaction. You should never be embarrassed to

ask for clarification about the sellers

    disclosure and other disclosure forms,

    loan applications and disclosures, ap-

    praisals, title commitments, surveys,

    contract addenda, and other docu-

ments. If you cant get a straight an-

swer from a service provider, I recom-

mend you ask your Texas Realtor.

    Dont stop reading now

If youve never participated in a real

estate closing, come prepared to sign.

And sign and sign and sign again.

Many people dont look at closing docu-

ments until they show up to the clos-

ing itself. They may glance at the title

on a form and listen to a one-sentence

    explanation of the documents purpose

before signing it. Occasionally, a per-

son will read every page right at the

closing table, slowing the process to a

    crawl.

A better approach is to request the

closing documents prior to the day you

close. You can then spend time review-

ing the materials to make sure that

    you understand everything and that

all facets of the transaction are proper-ly represented. You also should check

for accuracy. Its not unheard of for an

error to pop up either in the numbers

or some other important aspect of the

    deal.

    When you thoroughly examine the

    paperwork involved in purchasing or

selling a home and rely on your Texas

Realtor to assist you along the way, you

minimize the chance of future surpris-

es. After all, the documents you fill out

and sign form the basis of a decision

you will be living with for some time

to come. For more information, I invite

    you to visit TexasRealEstate.com.

    Dear Savvy Senior,

Can you tell me about re-

    erse mortgages? My wife

nd I are both in our 70s

    nd interested in learning

    ore about this option.

    Homebody Bob

Dear Bob,Over the years, reverseortgages have been con-

sidered loans of last resorts, nly for financially desper-

ate seniors. Not anymore!he reverse mortgage in-ustry is booming, helpingetirees from all walks ofife use their homes to helpund their retirement.

    The basics

A reverse mortgage is anique loan that lets olderomeowners convert part ofhe equity in their home intoax-free income that doesnt

ave to be paid back as longas they live there. But whosligible? How much cane borrowed? What does itost? And is this right forou? Here are the key pointsn how a reverse mortgageorks and where you cannd help: Eligibility: To be eligible

ou must be at least 62 yearsld, own your own home andurrently live there. Theres no income qualification.ven if you have an existingortgage, youre still eligi-

le, but you must be able toget enough from the reverse

ortgage to pay it off. Ownership: With a re-

verse mortgage, you, notthe bank, own the house, soyou are still responsible forproperty taxes, insurance

and repairs. And, how youchoose to spend the moneyfrom the loan is up to you. Types of loans: There

are two basic types of re- verse mortgages, the FHAinsured, Home Equity Con-

version Mortgage (HECM)which accounts for about90 percent of all reversemortgages on the market.(HECMs limit how muchof the homes value youcan tap currently rangingfrom $200,160 to $362,790.)

And conventional reversemortgages, also known as

jumbo loans, which are bet-ter suited for seniors withhigher valued homes over$400,000 because they of-fer larger loan amounts. Loan costs: The main

    drawback of reverse mort-

gages is the hefty up-frontfees a 2 percent lenderorigination fee, 2 percentmortgage insurance, alongwith appraisal fee, closingcosts and other miscella-neous expenses. All told, thecost of getting a HECM canrun around 5 percent of the

value of your home. Conven-tional reverse mortgages aregenerally more expensive.(Note: Most up-front feescan be added to the loan bal-ance, so youll have no out-of-pocket cost at closing.) Loan amounts: The

    amount you get through a

reverse mortgage dependson your age, your homes

value, where you live andthe current interest rates.Generally, the older youare, the more your house

is worth, and the lower theinterest rates are, the moreyou can borrow. To calculatehow much you may be ableto borrow with a HECM vis-it www.rmaarp.com. You cancalculate conventional re-

verse mortgages on the Websites of the financial institu-tion youre considering. Payment options: You

can receive the money froma reverse mortgage in alump sum payment, a lineof credit, regular monthlychecks or a combination ofthese. Loan repayment: A re-

verse mortgage does nothave to be repaid until you,or the last surviving borrow-er, permanently moves outof the home or dies. Thenyou or your heirs will have

to pay off the loan (which in-cludes the money you actu-ally borrowed plus accruedinterest and fees) eitherwith the proceeds from sell-ing the place, or if they wantto keep it, with money fromanother source. But, you oryour heirs will never owemore than the value of thehouse. Counseling: Before ap-

plying for a reverse mort-gage, you are required tofirst meet with an inde-pendent counselor who willspell out the pros and cons,as well as the alternatives

(its free). To find one in yourarea call the AARP ReverseMortgage Education Pro-gram (800-209-8085), theNational Foundation forCredit Counseling (866-698-

    6322), or Money Manage-ment International (877-908-2227). Tax-free: The money

you get from a reverse mort-gage is tax-free and wontaffect your Social Security

or Medicare benefits, butit may affect eligibility forcertain kinds of governmentassistance, such as SSIand Medicaid. Be sure youcheck. Reverse lenders: Re-

verse mortgages are offeredby both banks and mortgagelenders. To help you chooseone, talk to your reversemortgage counselor or visitwww.reversemortgage.org.

Puppies are a wonderful addition to anyome, but with them comes one changehat can be anything but wonderful house

raining. Its a process that can be slow and frus-rating, but Dr. Bonnie Beaver, a veterinar-an and Texas A&M College of Veterinary

edicine & Biomedical Sciences, has a fewelpful tips that may alleviate some of theain.

Beaver says that the first thing puppiesearn when being house trained is what

surfaces can be used for potty training andhat surfaces cannot. A fundamental prin-

iple in puppy training is establishing whatsurfaces are appropriate, she says, andshe recommends establishing acceptablesurfaces with the use of praise and treats.

Different surfaces include grass, concrete, newspaper, puppy pads or any other placethe pet owner always wants the puppy to

use to go to the bathroom. She believes this principle should be es-tablished young, because once the puppyunderstands what surface is appropriateto be eliminated on, the puppy will usuallyonly waste on that surface.

The pet owner should take the puppy tothe surface frequently to ensure that thepuppy only eliminates there, Beaver ex-plains.

The pet should definitely be taken to thesurface after eating, before sleeping, afterwaking up, and after periods of activity,

There is research to show that pregnant women who are overweight or

obese during the first trimester of pregnancy are more likely to have

lengthier pregnancies and more complications. The same finding pertains

to mothers-to-be who experience greater changes of body weight during

their pregnancies. Researchers found that, compared with women with

normal body mass indexes (BMIs), more women with higher BMIs

(as well as those with greater weight gain during pregnancy) during

the first trimester had longer-than-normal, or postdate, pregnancies.

(A postdate pregnancy is defined as lasting longer than 42 weeks,

while a normal pregnancy lasts 40 weeks.) Being overweight or obese

during the first trimester was also associated with a lower chance of

    spontaneous delivery at term.

A womans pregnancy is one of the most important times in her life.

At our practice, we understand that not all pregnancies are alike and

provide personalized, up to date care. When you require obstetrical

One of the joys of parenthood is eagerlyatching as your baby achieves important

evelopmental milestones rolling over, sitting up, taking the first bite of solidood.

Children with developmental delays orisabilities may need extra help to achieve

hose milestones, and the journey can bestressful and lonely for their parents.

Early Childhood Intervention servicesrom the Department of Assistive and Re-

abilitative Services (DARS) is there toelp.Early Childhood Intervention is a state-

ide program for families with children, irth to 36 months, with developmental de-

ays or disabilities. The programs professionals have exper-

ise in working with babies, toddlers and

heir families, providing services that sup-ort families as they help their children

each their potential. In 2007, Early Child-

ood Invention pro-vided services to morethan 49,000 children

    and their families state-wide.

Benefits of the pro-gram include: Services are conve-

nient for families, andthey are provided in

surroundings comfort-able and familiar to the

child, such as home or achild-care center. Children learn new

skills through everydayactivities. Families and professionals from

a variety of backgrounds work as a teamto find learning opportunities within the

familys normal routine, such as time forbaths, meals or playing. These activities

are based on the unique needs of the childand their family.

Services are coordinated with others inthe community. Early Childhood Inventionworks with doctors, child care, the Women,

nfants and Children Program (WIC), so-cial services and schools to help improve

the lives of children and families. There is no income limit, and no family

is turned away because of their inability to

pay. Furthermore, assessments and evalu-ations to determine eligibility for services

    are free.Early Childhood Intervention services

helped Rachel Logan, a first-time motherof triplets. On Oct. 20, 2002, Rachel gavebirth to three boys: Cal, Luke and Seth.

Born more than two months premature,Cal and Luke were released and sent home

from the hospital when they were 8 weeksold.

Seth, who was on a feeding tube had alonger stay in the hospital to have surgeryfor reflux, a condition that caused improper

digestion of his mothers milk.In February 2003, Early Childhood Inter-

    vention began occupational therapy with

Seth and his parents to address his eatingproblems.

I was unfamiliar with feeding therapyand how to help him, Rachel said.

The therapist gave me a real comfort

level with the feeding tube by teaching mehow to burp him differently. It was all very

overwhelming.Rachel and the therapists worked to-

gether to help Seth learn how to eat. They also experimented with different

mixtures of milk and cereal along with se-lecting the best baby bottles to use.

Entire days revolved around new tech-

niques to help Seth eat, Rachel explained.Early Childhood Intervention provided Ra-

chel with nutritional information and feed-ing strategies for Seth, while evaluatinghis swallowing and tongue coordination.

Today, Seth is a very happy child who isactive, agile and coordinated.

The therapists helped us monitor hisprogress and were al-

    ways so encouraging,Rachel said.

    Seth is one of the

    many success storiesfrom this program.

    Throughout, EarlyChildhood Intervention

services, parents andprofessionals work to-gether as a team to plan

    appropriate strategiesand interventions based

on the unique needs ofthe child and family.

Families who can af-ford to do so share in

the cost of services, but no children and

their families are turned away becausethey cannot pay.

Payments are determined using a slidingscale based on the familys size and income.

Some services are free of charge. For more information about the DARS

Early Childhood Intervention services orto refer a child to the program, please callthe DARS Inquiries Line at (800) 628-5115.

t was chock full of bass andbream and my uncle was

very good with his fly rod. Ina matter of minutes, he hadlanded several hand size

bream and a couple of nicebass, using a frog pattern

popping bug. Then, just as itwas getting too dark to fish,

he made a long cast and dou-ble hauled his fly line. Whenthe little popper reached the

zenith of its flight towardthe water, I saw my uncles

    fly rod point toward the

sky and the reel began toscream. What kind of fish

do yall have down here inTexas, he inquired and the

owl continued to strip hisline. After a lengthy battle,Uncle Luke captured the

big bird of prey and as coun-try people did back around

1960, my dad used leatherboot laces and tethered it

to the lower limb of a pinetree near our house. The bigbird would attempt to scalp

us kids when we came any-where near. After a few days

    of feeding the bird meat

scraps, Dad cut the strapsand let him go. My uncle

never forgot the battle theflying fish gave him!

Have you ever used half abell pepper in a recipe, only

to forget the other half in therefrigerator until

it was mushy andslimy? There is an

easy solution to thisdilemma so that you

can utilize your en-tire sweet, bell orhot peppers for up

    to several monthsafter purchase.

Alice Henneman, from Nebraska Ex-tension shares her

guidelines for pre-serving peppers for future

use. Peppers are one of thosefoods you can quickly freeze

    raw without blanching themfirst.

    When selecting bell or

sweet peppers; choose crisp, tender peppers. Next wash,

cut out stems and slice pep-pers in half. Remove seeds

and membrane and savetime by using a melon balleror the tip of a spoon to scrape

out seeds and membrane.Cut peppers into strips, dice

or slice, depending on howyou plan to use them. Freeze

peppers in a single layer ona cookie sheet with sides, about an hour or longer until

frozen. This method is oftenreferred to as tray freezing.

Transfer to a freezer bagwhen frozen, excluding as

much air as possible from thebag. The peppers will remain

separated for ease of use inmeasuring out for recipes.Pour out the amount of fro-

zen peppers needed, resealthe bag and return

    to the freezer.The procedure

    for freezing hotpeppers (includes

Jalapeno Peppers)is slightly differentbecause it is not

necessary to cut orchop the pepper be-

fore freezing. Sim-ply, wash and stem, then package, leav-

ing no headspace, and finally seal and freeze.

Here are a couple of hot tipsfor working with hot peppers:

Wear plastic or rubber glovesand do not touch your facewhile handling or cutting hot

peppers. If you do not weargloves, wash hands thorough-

ly with soap and water beforetouching your face or eyes.

And, if your mouth is burningfrom eating hot peppers, helpput out the fire with milk and

other dairy products. To extend the time frozen

foods maintain good quality, package foods in material in-

tended for freezing and keepthe temperature of the freez-er at 0 degrees F or below. It

is generally recommendedfrozen vegetables be eaten

within about eight monthsfor best quality.

Following is a recipe forBeef King Ranch Casserole

that contains bell and jalape-no peppers. My family enjoysthe original recipe obtained

from the Texas Beef Counciland my slightly modified ver-

sion which lowers the fat con-tent. Enjoy.

    CROSSWORD

SOLUTIONsince these are the instanc-es when the puppy will like-ly need to urinate. It is also

important to take the puppyto go to the bathroom at

least once during the night, since puppys bladders are

    small.It is critical that owners

nderstand that the surfacehat the pet is taught to useill always be used. When

et owners begin traininguppies, it is essential to

hoose a surface that will al-ays be available and conve-ient for use. Beaver notes

hat this can be a problemassociated with puppy pads.

The owner teaches thepet to eliminate on the pads

when it is young, so the petbelieves that this is the ap-propriate behavior, she

    adds. But when the dog

    gets older, the owner decides

he or she does not want the60-pound dog eliminatingon the pad in the laundry

room, but by this time thebehavior is too engrained in

the pets mind and is oftenirreversible.

The owner should alwaysgo to the surface with the

pet to ensure that the petdoes eliminate. Beaver rec-ommends using a leash if

the owner wants the pet toeliminate outside. The ac-

tion of walking makes thepuppy want to eliminatewhile also getting the pup-

py used to the owner beingaround while it is eliminat-

ing. This can be very helpfulif the owner chooses to relo-

cate to an area where dogsmust be kept on leashes ifoutside.

    Going to the surface with

the pet also allows the own-

er to know definitively thatthe puppy has gone to thebathroom, and this will help

    alleviate some accidents,she notes.

Another aspect that iscrucial for training is the

use of rewards. Beaversays the pet owner needs to

very actively and enthusi-astically praise the pet foreliminating on the proper

surface. When taking thepet for potty time, the owner

should try to show the pet very little affection beforethe pet eliminates and a

great deal of affection after-ward. This helps reinforce

the pets perception that ithas done something right,

she says.If the owner has to leave

    the house for an extended

    period of time, Beaver rec-

    ommends keeping the pet in

a crate. The crate helps keepthe pet inactive and reducesthe desire to eliminate, and

pets generally do not elimi-nate in small places they

know they will be spendingtime in, she adds.
